A 30-40% reduction in fuel economy can translate into hundreds of dollars in additional fuel expenses each yearbefore factoring in the added wear on key vehicle components.

“Most drivers think of aggressive driving as a safety issue, but it’s also a cost issue,” said John Dicken, director, material damage claims at Mercury Insurance. “From a claims standpoint, we see how habits like hard braking and rapid acceleration accelerate wear on brakes, tires and suspension components. Smoother driving isn’t just more efficient - it helps reduce preventable damage over time.”

The Hidden Cost of Driving Aggressively Fuel is only part of the equation.

Brake replacement can range from $300-800 per axle, depending on the vehicle.

A new set of tires can cost $600-1,200 or more.* Poorly maintained or underinflated tires can lower gas mileage by roughly 0.2% for every 1 PSI drop in pressure, according to

federal transportation data.

Over time, inconsistent maintenance and aggressive driving habits compound these costs.

“Driving behavior directly impacts how often certain parts need to be replaced,” Dicken said. “When drivers anticipate traffic, maintain steady speeds and keep up with routine maintenance, they reduce strain on their vehicle and potentially avoid unnecessary repair expenses.”

Practical Eco-Driving Tips That Make a Measurable Difference

Consider these strategies recommended by Mercury Insurance to improve efficiency and reduce vehicle wear:

Accelerate gradually: Avoid rapid starts and jackrabbit acceleration, which significantly reduce fuel economy.

Brake smoothly and anticipate stops: Looking ahead and easing into stops reduces stress on brake systems.

Maintain consistent speeds: Using cruise control on highways can help improve fuel efficiency.

Keep tires properly inflated: Check tire pressure monthly and before long trips. If you’re unsure what your vehicle’s tires should be inflated to, locate the sticker inside the driver’s side door jamb for the proper PSI inflation or refer to the owner’s manual.

Remove excess weight: Extra cargo and unused roof racks reduce efficiency and increase drag.

ATTRACT BACKYARD BIRDS WITH THE RIGHT SEEDS

(Family Features) While almost all bird seed may look pretty much the same to you, it doesn’t to the birds you’re feeding. Knowing what kinds of seeds different birds like can help you attract a variety of fine feathered friends to your feeders.

Consider these popular seed types and the common backyard birds they attract:

Sunflower - Black sunflower seeds attract blue jays, goldfinches, woodpeckers, purple finches, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches. Striped sunflower seeds appeal to chickadees, doves, grosbeaks, northern cardinals, nuthatches, titmice and woodpeckers. Sunflower hearts (also known as “hulled sunflower” and “sunflower chips”) attract chickadees, common redpolls, juncos, doves, finches, goldfinches, grosbeaks, nuthatches, pine siskins, titmice and woodpeckers.

Nyjer - These lightweight, tiny seeds are a favorite of goldfinches. Put nyjer seeds in a

hanging feeder with tiny holes so the small seeds won’t get blown away. Nyjer also attracts redpolls, juncos, doves, indigo bunting and pine siskin.

Safflower - These white seeds are slightly smaller than black sunflower seeds. Because they are bitter, grackles, blue jays, starlings - and squirrels - don’t like them. However, they do attract doves, purple finches, chickadees, titmice and downy woodpeckers.

White millet - Good for scattering on the ground, white millet attracts ground feeders such as juncos, sparrows, indigo buntings, towhees and mourning doves.

Cracked corn - Popular with ground feeders, cracked corn appeals to doves, crows, jays, sparrows, juncos and towhees. Avoid getting finely cracked corn as it’s vulnerable to rot and can quickly turn to mush.

When choosing a bird seed mix, pay attention to the ingredients list on the package. Bird seed is required by law to list ingredients in order of content. Some cheaper mixes have filler seeds such as wheat, red milo, red millet or “assorted grain products.” Most backyard birds won’t eat those, and your seed mix could end up wasted on the ground.

NATIONAL TRAIN DAY 2026 Western Maryland Railway Historical Society Museum Complex The Train Station, 41 North Main Street, Union Bridge, MD. May 9, 10am‑3pm. Open to all ages. Free Admission Come out to this special Saturday open house to celebrate the National Train Day and celebrate the joy of trains and train travel! May 10th 1869 was the day the Golden spike was driven completing the first transcendental railroad, joining east and West of our great land. Come see the history of the Western Maryland Railway both in Carroll County and the state of Maryland. The Museum collection is housed in a 124 year old Railroad Station and office building. See trains from full size ones to small model trains of all sizes scales. Our own Carroll County based Maryland Midland Railroad may have a locomotive on display. There may also be displays of equipment (weather permitting) from the “Chesapeake & Allegheny Steam Preservation Society”. There will be a Child ID Program table setup. The ID Kit allows parents to collect specific information by easily recording the physical characteristics and finger prints of their children on identification cards that they keep at home. If ever needed this ID Kit will give authorities vital information to help locate a missing child. There will be a Hot Dog stand.
