othing’s wrong with sitting down to a slice of meatloaf with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans. The same goes for a chicken salad sandwich or a BLT for lunch at a local restaurant, and nothing beats the all-American classic of a burger and fries when you’re stuck on what to order. But, getting out of your culinary comfort zone to explore other cuisines can be amazing, leading to

delicious discoveries. With the proliferation of international restaurants in Frederick County, the world is your oyster—or your taco, ramen, pho, moussaka or bulgogi. New residents coming into the area can be credited with the diversity of menus, whether it’s immigrants wanting to share their food or troops stationed at Fort Detrick who may have tried different dishes during their deployments around the world and continue craving them. One of the first cuisines to break the meat-and-potatoes mold was probably Italian, with local diners having a bevy of places from which to choose. The owners of Vesuvius Italian & Wine Bar, 3290 Bennett Creek Ave., Urbana, declare that “our heart beats for Napoli,” which means the authentic Italian cuisine on their menu is served with passion and pride. They describe the dining experience here as “the perfect collision of sea, earth and fire through our curated flavors and sun-drenched hospitality.” And it’s all presented in beautiful sur-
roundings, including artwork of the famous volcano. Vesuvius serves lunch with a selection of antipasti, paninis, flatbread pizza, pasta, salads and soups. The dinner menu is expanded to include Rigatoni Sunday Gravy with short ribs, meatballs, beef and Italian sausage, Gnocchi Mamma Mia, featuring homemade potato dumplings with a choice of sauce, and Branzino, a de-boned whole Mediterranean Sea bass. These are just some of the multitudes of dinner entrees available, so that deciding what to order is nearly impossible. Pistarro’s Ristorante Pizzeria Napoletana, 221 N. East St., is home to Frederick’s first restaurant specializing in traditional Naples-style pizza in a wood-fired oven made in Italy from volcanic clay. Order a pie, which comes in several delicious versions, and enjoy the outside dining option. Takeout is also quick and convenient with a place to stop out front. Pistarro’s has daily specials, happy hour and Sunday brunch buffet and is known for more than pizza. Pastas range from pappardelle Bolognese to fettuccine alfredo and capellini carbonara. The menu also has salads, sandwiches and soups. And don’t forget dessert, whether it’s the iconic tiramisu, limoncello cake or strawberry rhubarb pie with vanilla bean gelato to top it off. Don’t let the small footprint of Tempo di Pasta, 244 E. Church St., fool you. There are huge

flavors coming out of the small kitchen, dishes like Arancini (risotto balls, fontina and mushrooms with a pomodoro dipping sauce) for starters, Entrees include fettucine with chicken breast or a choice of ravioli with wild mushrooms in fontina sauce or crab and lobster ravioli with vodka sauce. Dishes with tortellini, spaghetti and cannelloni are also featured and diners have the option to create their own masterpiece with a favorite pasta and sauce. Café Bueno showcases daily specials such as tamales, huaraches, carne asada and chili rellenos. As good as the food is, that’s just a part of the experience in the beautifully decorated space that comes with a friendly staff. Across town at 1450 W. Patrick St., is Taco Bar Taqueria, serving Mexican fast food, the kind found in sunny locales where people enjoy strolling while enjoying what’s known as street food. “We want all our customers to be involved in an experience that welcomes them to be part of the Mexican culture,” their website promises. Tierra y Taza, a Latin America-focused cafe at 238A N. Market St., is run by Natalia Alvarado Sandy Gallardo, who sought a representation of coffee from Central America. They developed Tempo di Pasta

sauce. Vo says the restaurant is known for its homemade sauces.
The Other Side of the World

their own blend that’s used for espresso drinks and pour-overs. Of course, you have to have some accompanying food to go with the coffee. They offer sweet and savory empanadas, cookies and heartier fare such as huevos rancheros and potato and chorizo hash. If one Sardi’s is a blessing, two of the Peruvian chicken restaurants in Frederick is downright heavenly. The original location at 50 McCain Drive, which has been delighting diners since 2010, was recently joined by a second spot at 5722 Buckeystown Pike. The restaurant is known for its charbroiled rotisserie Sardi’s chicken and sides ranging from fried plantains, chaufa and beans, to garlic broccoli and fried yuca. But it’s not only chicken. “People come in for the chicken and then explore other things on the menu,” says Sardi’s staffer Amy Vo. There are pork chops, shrimp skewers, lamb chops and a “bang bang” treatment of chicken slathered in a tasty
Big Belly’s in Point of Rocks is owned by Sheraz Shah, who has a Pakistani background. It serves American food such as burgers, fries and cheesesteaks, but dishes from other places in the world show up on the wall menu, with made-from-scratch falafel coming quickly to mind, along with samosas with a homemade plum sauce. He also makes a mean fish taco. With an aim to “provide you the best food experience in your life,” Ayoka African Cuisine, 1100 W. Patrick St., Suite M, offers diners a menu that will take them on an exciting culinary journey, introducing new and different taste sensations. Entrees include Yasa Chicken, a dish blending tender chicken with a heaping number of caramelized onions in a sweet, spicy, lemony sauce, served with steamed rice. Fataya is another specialty; the hand-held pies can contain chicken, beef or salmon, accompanied by a spicy tomato sauce. The fisherman pot is a seafood lover’s dream and the Jollof rice that’s available is a staple of African cuisine. Shawarma chicken or beef, well-marinated and slowly roasted, is said to be one of the world’s most popular street foods. Monrovia is home to Suvai Biryani & Curries, 11791 Fingerboard Road, a restaurant that has attracted local fans of Indian food, mixing classic recipes with a modern twist and featuring dishes from street food to more complex offerings. The talented kitchen provides diners with a taste of India’s various regions, making return visits a certainty. Biryani, a popular layered rice dish that can contain meat, whether it’s chicken, shrimp, fish or goat, or be served vegetarian style, is a feature of the restaurant, along with dosa, an oblong thin and crispy rice-lentil crepe with various fillings. Some of the more familiar dishes include butter chicken, a curry made with spiced tomato and butter sauce, and chicken tikka masala, with tomato sauce, yogurt, onion, pepper and tikka spice blend. To make sure you don’t leave anything on your plate, there are freshly made breads—including

naan, a soft and pillowy flatbread—for sopping up any remaining sauce. And don’t forget to order a side of mint or sweet chutney to add another level of flavor. The restaurant also has a bar that features classic cocktails and ones with an Indian flair. Abby Olubovo’s mother once owned a restaurant in Nigeria and, while attending college for an accounting degree, the daughter frequented the kitchen learning how to make delicious food. In 2004, Oblubovo and her husband won the visa lottery and immigrated to the United States where they were accountants. Cooking remained her passion as she brought dishes to church dinners, dropped off food to new parents or made party fare, constantly hearing that she should open a restaurant. So, she did.
Jollof on Point
Big Belly’s
Jollof On Point, 450 Prospect Blvd., offers authentic Nigerian cuisine, including several rice dishes and stews, plus meat ranging from turkey wings to chicken, fish, beef and goat. Side dishes and pastries round out the menu. Olubovo’s fried rice with shrimp, for instance, has a deliciousness not overwhelmed by soy sauce, instead letting natural seasonings shine. “I source ingredients locally as much as I can,” she says. Along with the food, the restaurant gives diners a chance to experience Nigerian hospitality and music, which often sets customers to dancing. “Nigerian people are very welcoming,” she says with a wide smile. “And food is huge in our culture.” In 2005, Tin and Maria Khong opened Lucky Corner at 700 N. Market St., but with other jobs and small children to care for, they sold the restaurant eight months later. “Now the children are grown up,” says Tin Khong. When the building again became available, they jumped on it, refreshing the restaurant’s décor with paint and new furniture and burnishing the menu that feature Vietnamese dishes under a new name: Tin Corner. “We were the first Vietnamese restaurant in Frederick,” he says. One of the most popular dishes is the pho, brimming with flavorful broth, rice noodles, vegetables and meat. It was the perfect antidote this past winter for all the colds and flu going around. The menu also includes curry, stir fries, fried rice and grilled meats. Vegetarian options.

Gogi Go
Michael Song not only provides delicious food and beverages at his Frederick restaurants, but he also encourages diners to have fun, such as entertaining them with the chef ’s knife skills at his Miyako Japanese Hibachi Steak, Seafood & Sushi or prompting them to play with their food at Gogi Go Korean BBQ, just a block away at 1003 W. Partrick St. Song also owns Matsutake Sushi & Steak, 5225 Buckeystown Pike. At Gogi Go, a well-trained and friendly wait staff guides diners who may be unfamiliar with the concept of cooking their own meals right at the table, giving them an authentic dining experience. Folks can order a choice of marinated protein that comes with assorted vegetables to be seared on a built-in grill and paired with rice or wrapped in a lettuce leaf. A variety of sauces are at the ready, along with K-Town Takeout side dishes, including kimchi with its sour, salty and savory taste. Gogi Go is like a party with interaction and happy faces all around. There’s no way people can sit down at a table and silently eat their meal. China Garden, 506 W. Patrick St., a Frederick icon for more than 40 years, remains a popular
place to have dinner, with manager Allen Chiang sometimes strolling through the dining room making you feel like family. They also offer pick-up and delivery when you don’t feel like cooking. The restaurant had a fire in May 2019, forcing it to close until it was able to fully opened in 2023 to the delight of all its fans. It stands to reason that a restaurant that came in fourth for the best fried chicken spot in the United States and Canada would have people standing in line, sometimes a block long, to partake of a cuisine that blends Asian and Ethiopian flavors. Ekiben, 500 N. Market St., opened to enthusiastic diners, and is the company’s first location outside of Baltimore. The business started in 2014 by a group of college friends selling their unique food out of a hotdog cart at the Fells Point Farmers Market. Since then, Ekiben has been racking up the accolades, including being listed among Yelp’s top 100 restaurants in the country, as well as being recognized by Travel & Leisure magazine as “the best place in Maryland to get a sandwich.” Already a hit with fans of Asian food, Thai Meric Eatery and Bar at 1170 W. Patrick St. widened its mission to include serving the most exceptional Japanese cuisine at Sushi Nomu, 4969 Westview Drive. Owner Oat Thongsuk says diners “are stunned with the design” of the restaurant immediately upon entering. “It’s more than a sushi counter,” he says of the dining room that is “very modern” with wooden and tile floors and rope lighting. He likens the space to a sanctuary where you can be in another world while enjoying delicious food. Sushi Nomu boasts a trio of chefs who draw on their diverse backgrounds to offer “a blend of experience and creativity,” according to the restaurant’s website. The restaurant offers traditional sushi and sashimi, tempura and ramen dishes, as well as signature offerings such as lobster tail tempura roll

with avocado, asparagus, cream cheese and other ingredients, served with spicy mayo. Diners can get rice-less rolls as well as sushi tapas—a way to savor and share a range of selections on small plates.
New Tastes in Unexpected Places
Adding to the fun and flavor of a variety of cuisines now available in Frederick is finding them in unusual locations. For Aleko’s Village Café at 6 N. Church St., Middletown, the journey began in a gas station with take-out Greek fare, transitioning to a sitdown restaurant. Owner Joana Tsinonis uses family recipes that her parents prepared for 50 years in the multiple restaurants they ran, giving diners the feeling they are in Greece. Gyros, souvlaki, moussaka and spanakopita are standard Greek dishes but made with the family’s unique imprint. Who knew that a Frederick taste sensation could be found in a strip shopping center sharing space with a laundromat, 7-Eleven and liquor store, but Hinzi’s Kitchen, 503 N. East St., is well worth searching out for authentic Pakistani food with the chef ’s special spin added. Hinzi Awan and her husband, Malik furnished the dining room in pleasing colors along with some of Malik’s artwork. In addition to seated meals, they offer carry-out and delivery. “People are discovering new tastes and an exciting option to put in their [dining] rotation,” Malik says, adding that they strive to keep their menu affordable. The offerings range from a variety of rice bowls to rolls where ingredients such as chicken, chickpeas or gyro meat are wrapped in soft bread. A customer favorite is the samosa chat with tamarind chutney, spicy mint chutney and yogurt. Mirchi masala fries, with a coating of chilies and spices, is an addictive side dish. Hinzi has a large family in the area and says they’re always eager to come and test her new recipes before she adds them to the restaurant menu. In a spot that once served up southern barbecue, Sun and Joy Back, originally from South Ekiben
Korea, are offering their native dishes to delighted diners. Located in a converted home at 325 W. 7th St., K-Town Takeout also offers an eat-in option in a small dining room. The bento box, which dates back centuries as a no-fuss portable meal for warriors, is a popular item, says Ellen Black, the couple’s daughter. “It has all the food groups,” from salad and other vegetables to a protein, as well as carbohydrates such as rice or stir-fried glass noodles, dumplings and fresh fruit. The chef serves generous portions, and most customers can make two meals from one order. The sushi is like a work of art. Other menu items include bulgogi, thinly sliced marinated beef and rice bowls, including hoe-deopbap, featuring sashimi-grade raw fish over rice with fresh vegetables and spicy sauce. Pizza is the main feature on the menu Cugino Forno Pizzeria, recently opened in what was once the Coca-Cola bottling plant at 1705 N. Market St., and what could be better? Made from ingredients imported from Italy, pizzas are constructed in front of your eyes and baked in Italian-made, woodfired ovens that can cook a pie in 90 seconds. The menu also includes salads, soft drinks, beer and wine, and if you’re longing for dessert, there’s homemade cannoli and gelato in an array of flavors. Surroundings are casual, reminiscent of the place as a factory, and there’s a wide terrace for warm, sunny days.

Best Thing to Come Out of a 900-Degree Oven Voted BOF Pizza 9 years in a row! With more than a quarter of a century of making people happy with their pizza, Il Forno is definitely doing it right with a constantly evolving menu and consistently friendly service. Using wood-burning ovens—they had to add a second one when demand went through the roof—Il Forno uses a tangy, slightly sweet tomato sauce made in-house paired with a hand-tossed crust that emerges from the oven light and crispy with just the proper amount of char. Gluten-free and cauliflower crusts are also an option, as well as individual-sized pies. Toppings run the gamut from Hawaiian to vegetarian to “Carnivore’s Dream,” a blend of pepperoni, sausage ham, and meatballs on that amazing crust. In addition to pizza that consistently wins Frederick
Magazine’s annual “Best of Frederick” contest, the restaurant also has an array of soups, salads, pasta, pounded chicken tenders and wings, sandwiches, wraps and subs. Pasta dishes include pasta calamari, cheese ravioli and shrimp scampi. Sandwiches, most served on a ciabatta roll, include pesto chicken salad and Italian cold cut. “You Name It” is the title for one of the subs, with diners calling the shots with the filling choices. On nice days the restaurant’s patio is filled with customers and in addition to enjoying your food in the large dining room there is also delivery to home and workplace. We have expanded AGAIN. This time we have added a brand new taproom featuring Vanish Farmwoods Brewery craft beers. The perfect space for large groups, events and parties.
