LANDING AT TRE 2025
I’ve always loved traditions. Growing up, my family had one of going ice skating at the mall every Christmas Eve. For years, I wouldn’t entertain a different plan. It wasn’t really about the ice skating (I’m not even sure I enjoyed it all that much), but about the comfort of the ritual. As my sisters and I got older, it stopped making sense to keep that tradition, but I’ll always look back on it fondly.
Over the years in Austin, we all created our own TRE traditions. For me, it was eating just about every meal at the Hilton lobby bar—most nights a margarita pizza. While yes, I’ll miss those small rituals, I am so excited for the opportunity to create new ones. This year, we get to gather in San Antonio, where we’ll start new traditions while carrying forward the most important one of all: being together
If you’ve met me or read one of my past letters, you know how much I believe in the power of gathering. When we come together, ideas are sparked, innovation happens, and friendships grow. It drives our businesses forward in ways we could never achieve on our own or without that face-to-face
connection. And just as important, there is joy in that connection. Every year, TRE is the place where we get all of that—in the biggest and best way.
I’m so excited for this community to experience San Antonio. From the Alamo to the River Walk to the Pearl District’s energy, it’s a vibrant city full of life and culture. I can already imagine us running along the River Walk, grabbing a nightcap in Southtown, and making the kind of memories that stick with you long after the event ends.
As always, our team is working hard to make TRE the place where the running and outdoor community comes together to learn, connect, and grow. I can’t wait to see you all in San Antonio and create new traditions with you.
Cheers!

Learning happens everywhere, and at TRE 2025, it will be built into every moment. Centered around the theme Better Together: Uniting the Running Industry , the 2025 education program will be brought to life through action-driven content and dynamic learning experiences.
Tuesday’s conference sessions will dive into topics like culture and community, consumer behavior, and retail efficiencies, while Training Camp Theater sessions will highlight impactful learnings from all corners of the industry, including athletes, brand leaders, retailers, journalists, and non-profit representatives.
As always, some of the most valuable takeaways will happen outside of session rooms. Organic conversations with retailers, brands, race directors, media, and TRE partner organizations will inspire fresh thinking and new approaches to your business. Education fuels individual growth, strengthens businesses, and moves the industry forward, which is why learning is a cornerstone of TRE 2025.

At TRE 2025, inspiration and connection go hand in hand. Our industry is constantly evolving, and more than ever, there is a lot of uncertainty within specialty retail. It’s critical for this community to gather, share ideas, and celebrate wins. Whether it’s a conversation in line to grab lunch or a new-to-you idea during an education session, you’ll find inspiration at TRE—in both expected and unexpected places. Every year, we’re reminded of the magic that happens when the running industry comes together—in the exhibit hall, at the Indie 5K, during the Industry Awards Dinner, and in serendipitous moments throughout the entire event. We encourage you to absorb it all and be open to those unplanned moments, as that’s when true connection happens.
Bringing The Running Event to a new city marks an exciting milestone for our team and for the running industry. San Antonio offers an incredible, vibrant backdrop for TRE 2025, and we can’t wait for attendees to experience the energy, connection, and inspiration that happens when this community comes together.
Christina Henderson Event Director, TRE
The 2025 exhibit hall will be the largest in TRE’s history. Home to hundreds of leading and emerging brands, attendees will discover “what’s next” in run specialty—from the latest footwear and apparel to innovative retail technology and upgraded accessories. You’ll find cornerstone brands like HOKA, Brooks, On, ASICS, and Nike, as well as first-time exhibitors like SOAR Running, ANTA, SKIDA, Hollow Socks, and Sweaty Betty. Brands like Bandit, Mount to Coast, and SATISFY will be on the floor, along with outdoor specialty names like Patagonia, Cotopaxi, and prAna. And coming off of its debut standalone spring event, Switchback at TRE will be back for Year Four, with more than 60 outdoor brands showing off their latest gear.
With more than 100,000 sq. feet of exhibit space, there is a lot to see on the trade show floor. We encourage you to be intentional with your time on the show floor: plan out your days, visit new-to-you brands, join in on the happy hours, and of course, have some fun . González Convention Center will provide a fresh, modern space for TRE, with the exhibit hall, education sessions, Opening Party, and Industry Awards Dinner all happening in one dedicated section of the venue.

TUESDAY, DEC. 2
7:00 AM / Merida Plaza
This year, we’re partnering with Adopt-A-Spot San Antonio to help keep our shared spaces clean and green. Departing from Merida Plaza at the Henry B. González Convention Center, attendees will follow a downtown River Walk loop, passing historic landmarks like the Alamo.
Open to all, participants will depart for a run or walk to explore San Antonio; along the route there will be locations TRE has adopted for cleanup. You’ll have plenty of time to reconnect with old friends and build new relationships, all while exploring our new host city!
The Details:
• Meet at Merida Plaza at 6:50 AM!
• There will be a pre-set route with two cleanup locations highlighted; participants may stop at the cleanup locations along the way or circle back after their run or walk.
• Sneaker Impact will be onsite to collect any pre-loved sneakers for recycling.
• Bingwa coffee will be available for all participants.
• Trash bags, gloves, and grabbers will be provided at all cleanup locations.
In 2024, participants collected more than 650 pounds of garbage during the trail cleanup in Austin, TX!
The Running Event will donate $1,000 to San Antonio Parks Foundation to support the city’s green spaces.
The Running Event 2025 education program will center around the theme Better Together: Uniting the Running Industry, and will be brought to life through action-driven content and dynamic learning experiences.

Where Precision Meets Simplicity. Inspired by the way Tesla made game changing technology widely accessible with the launch of Models 3 & Y, we set out to reengineer foot scanning from the inside out. Our mission: eliminate cost and complexity without compromising performance.
In just eighteen months, our engineers successfully removed 260 internal components, fully optimizing
system architecture. Simultaneously, we advanced our sensor and camera technologies to deliver higher precision in a simplified user presentation.
The final result: the Zoe Pro. A breakthrough in thoughtful engineering, delivering world-class performance at a price that finally makes advanced 3D scanning widely accessible.

Resilient Leadership: Thriving Beyond Burnout
Presented by
OPEN TO ALL BADGEHOLDERS
In an era defined by constant change and mounting pressures, leadership in the run specialty industry has never been more challenging—or more essential. This candid conversation brings together female leaders from both leading brands and retailers to explore the rising tide of leadership burnout.
Panelists will share how they are navigating uncertainty from three perspectives: as individuals striving to protect their own well-being, as leaders guiding and sustaining their teams, and as industry voices helping shape the future of run specialty. Attendees will gain practical tools, new perspectives, and renewed energy to lead with resilience— without sacrificing their own passion in the process.
Each year, our education program is built around the real opportunities and challenges specialty retailers face. For 2025, we’re excited to showcase sessions that are not only timely and actionable but also grounded in collaboration and innovation. Guided by our theme ‘Better Together,’ this year’s speakers will offer insights that retailers can immediately apply to strengthen their businesses, their careers, and their communities.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM: Unlocking Consumer Insights for Run Specialty Retail: How to Remain Authentic and Competitive in Today’s Market
Running has become more than a sport: it’s a pillar of today’s lifestyle and culture. As more runners become new customers, competition for their loyalty has grabbed the attention of the retail world. Join Circana and Karnan Associates for an engaging discussion on the latest data and trends that shape consumer behavior and influence run specialty retail. Beth Goldstein, a footwear and accessories analyst with Circana, will present exclusive top-down insights on current industry market dynamics, followed by a “bottoms up” perspective from David Durkin, co-owner of Karnan Associates, who will offer practical ways retailers and vendors can turn this information into actionable strategies. Circana and Karnan Associates will identify opportunities for growth and best practices that position your store as a steadfast operator, emerging trend setter, and trusted run specialty partner in your community. Whether you are a retail buyer, marketing professional, experienced store owner, or brand leader, you will walk away with the tools needed to stay ahead of rising consumer expectations and ensure long-term relevance and authenticity in the run specialty market.
4:45 PM - 5:30 PM: Built to Perform, Styled to Inspire: How Design and Storytelling Shape the Culture of Running
Behind every shoe, piece of apparel, or gear that runners love is a design journey that blends creativity, performance, and storytelling. In this session, a panel of industry leaders will share their paths, highlight memorable projects, and explore how innovation continues to shape the future of running.
Design is never just about product. It is about roots, heritage, and cultural influences that shape how people move and express themselves today. This conversation will show how storytelling transforms shopping from a transaction into a meaningful connection. When retailers carry the design process story from its historical origins through its cultural context, customers leave with more than gear. They leave with a story to share with friends, communities, and platforms like TikTok, creating a cycle of loyalty, pride, and cultural relevance that strengthens both the retailer and the community.

Retailers as Brand Amplifiers
Even in a DTC-driven market, specialty retailers remain the heart of community connection. By translating design stories into authentic in-store and local experiences, they amplify a brand’s value in ways DTC cannot replicate — turning transactions into transformative moments that customers carry into their communities and share beyond the store.

In August of 2020, Oscar Camejo was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and hospitalized.
“I had to get my life together,” says Camejo. “That’s when I started hiking, and that led to running. Eventually, I signed up for a 5K, and the rest is history.”
Five years after his diabetes diagnosis, Camejo is not only healthier and 80 pounds lighter, but he’s also an avid trail runner. He serves as an ambassador for the Atlanta chapter of Black Men Run, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles among members of the Black community.
Camejo’s story is just one example of how outdoor recreation is attracting a more diverse population.
The latest research from Outdoor Industry Association reveals notable increases in participation among People of Color,
By Marcus Woolf, Trailheads Editor
members of the LGBTQ+ community, and casual consumers seeking community and serenity rather than competition and an adrenaline rush.
To thrive amid these dramatic changes in participation, businesses must understand the needs and desires of people in these key consumer groups.
THE BLACK COMMUNITY
Fourteen years ago, Black participants comprised just 6.2% of the total participant base for outdoor recreation, according to OIA’s 2025 Outdoor Participation Trends Report. However, from 2023 to 2024, Black participation grew 12.8%, with 2.3 million more people exploring the outdoors.
One reason for the increase is the emergence of industry-wide initiatives and organizations connecting People of Color to
outdoor recreation. The Outdoor Foundation’s Thrive Outside Initiative and the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC) are breaking down barriers and building lasting connections to the outdoors.
Founded in 2013, the nonprofit organization Black Men Run now has more than 50 chapters in 30 states. “Overall, the motto of Black Men Run is promoting a healthy brotherhood,” says Camejo, who is an ambassador for the organization’s trailrunning initiative TURF (Trail and Ultra Running Fanatics). “We promote health and wellness among black men specifically through running. We like to create safe spaces for fellowship and support.”
In Atlanta, Black Men Run not only hosts running events but also partners with community organizations to promote preventive health practices and address issues such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.
While Black Men Run helps people improve their health, it also enables them to feel more comfortable in the outdoors.
“Often, there is this fear of going into the outdoors alone,” says Camejo. “Unfortunately, in our country, some very tragic things have happened to black men, women, and children when it comes to being outdoors. They wonder if they’ll make it home safely. But races and social events have made the outdoors a more welcoming place.”
As participation has increased, brands have worked harder to engage people in the Black community. “Companies that specialize in gear are definitely looking for more exposure to the Black community,” says Camejo. They’re hosting events, meetups, and expos to showcase their products, says Camejo.
He says that companies must put in the work to really understand and support people in the Black community. “Go beyond the surface-level marketing,” says Camejo. “Authentic partnerships definitely matter. I would say invest in grassroots programs that directly impact the local communities.”
Today’s outdoor consumer base is not only more ethnically diverse but also includes a growing number of people from the LGBTQ+ community.
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic and immediately after, there was a significant increase in participation, says Justin Yoder, executive director of LGBTQ Outdoors
“People no longer had the restaurants, the bars. They were shut down, and getting outside was still something that you could do,” he says. “So that was a huge turning point for our community to get introduced to the outdoors.”
LGBTQ Outdoors began as an Instagram account in 2019 and has since evolved into a nationwide organization with 28 chapters.
Robyn Tackitt serves as an ambassador for LGBTQ Outdoors in Waco, TX. “My job is to create events locally that will get other members of the community to make new friends and feel safe,” says Tackitt. “We’ve been able to get people into the new things that make them feel like they’re doing something worthwhile.”
According to Tackitt, many people in the LGBTQ+ community feel more comfortable in the outdoors when they are part of a group. “We always have the fear that, when we meet a stranger, they’re going to hate us for what we are,” says Tackitt. “To know that you’re going to be welcomed, no matter what, has helped a lot of people break out of their shell and try things they never would have thought of before.”
According to OIA’s 2025 Outdoor Participation Trends Report, “Participants who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning are the most active adult cohort in outdoor recreation.” In 2024, “members of the LGBTQ+ community made up 11.4% of the outdoor participant base (20.6 million people), an increase of 700,000 LGBTQ+ participants since 2023.”
As the outdoor industry works to engage the LGBTQ+ community, it will be important for businesses to signal that they welcome these consumers, says Yoder. He recommends that stores display a pride flag in their windows or on the front door. “Some people might face backlash for that,” admits Yoder, but he says LGBTQ+ consumers will be loyal to businesses that show their support.
As the consumer base has become more ethnically diverse and LGBTQ+ friendly, it has also become more “casual.”
“The core outdoor consumer of the past is not the dominant force in the outdoor market today,” OIA reports in its 2025 Outdoor Consumer Trends Report. It notes that, since 2019, “the typical outdoor participant has changed — they participate less frequently, their approaches to outdoor activities are less aggressive.”
Many of these consumers tried outdoor activities for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic. To escape isolation, people flocked to parks and other open-air spaces, which they considered safe havens. These people were hitting the trail to find happiness rather than physical and mental challenges.
For example, trail running is gaining popularity in part because it serves as a less hardcore alternative to road running, says Steve Holmberg of Insight Accelerator, a consumer research and strategy consultancy for sports and outdoor brands.
“Road running has a seriousness to it,” says Holmberg, explaining that people judge their success based on how fast they run a course. “Trail running provides that opposite opportunity for consumers. It’s a space where you aren’t necessarily judged by your speed.” Instead, trail runners focus more on celebrating the completion of a course and sharing the experience with others. Because trail running events tend to be casual and social, participation has increased by 231% over the past decade, according to OIA.
Across the country, retailers and local organizations have formed hiking, running, and biking clubs that are much more social than competitive. In addition, they host events that cater to a wide variety of interests and ability levels.
In Peoria, IL, RC Outfitters has rebranded its Run309 gathering as RC Athletic Club. “We’re expanding into other hobbies, like yoga,” says Bethany Fosdyck, director of events and community outreach for RC Outfitters. “It doesn’t have to be a run. It could be a walk, it could be a hike, it could be kayaking.” As a result of the rebranding, an event that once drew about 15 people is now attracting around 90 people.
For decades, the outdoor industry focused its attention on “hardcore” consumers. However, the industry’s future success hinges on its ability to serve a more diverse crowd as the country’s demographics shift and consumer priorities change.
As OIA notes in its consumer survey, the expansion of the participant base signals “meaningful opportunities for the outdoor industry to evolve, embrace new audiences, and build a more resilient future.”
On the trails in and around Atlanta, Oscar Camejo can see that future taking shape. “We are opening our doors to people who don’t necessarily look like your typical ultra-runner,” he says. “When one person goes through the door and has a positive experience, that person tells the next person. Then, the word gets out to say, ‘Hey, you know what? This is a safe place. Let’s all go.’”
Marcus Woolf Editor, Trailheads

THURSDAY, DEC. 4
7:00 AM / Hemisfair Park
Runners and walkers will take to TRE’s Indie 5K course for a morning of movement and connection. This year, the race is taking place in historic Hemisfair Park, right next to the Henry B. González Convention Center. That’s right—no travel time required!
Hemisfair is a community with residences, local businesses and three public parks in the heart of San Antonio. Redevelopment efforts are designed to transform a vacant space left over from the 1968 World’s Fair into a vibrant, active urban parks district, reintroducing people and a neighborhood back to the downtown core.

The Indie 5K is included with the purchase of any TRE 2025 pass. Simply opt-in to the 5K when registering.
6:00 AM - 6:15 AM: Meet in your hotel lobby (Marriott Rivercenter, Grand Hyatt, Hilton); a member of the TRE team will be there to lead you to the start area.
7:00 AM: Indie 5K Starts
7:05 AM: Fun Run & Walk Starts (One Mile)
After the race: Grab some breakfast and coffee and head over to the expo to demo participating brands’ products!

The Indie 5K is free and open to everyone at TRE, including attendees, exhibitors, media, and partners.
We’ll be offering a one-mile fun run and walk, beginning five minutes after the 5K start.
As always, teams are encouraged to participate! New for this year, the fastest retail store team will be recognized at Thursday night’s Industry Awards Dinner! Teams of three are scored using cross country scoring.

Did you know TRE 2025 overlaps with Giving Tuesday? That’s right—Tuesday, December 2 marks Giving Tuesday: a global day of generosity that creates an opportunity for individuals, business, and communities to support and give back to important causes and non-profit organizations.
In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, TRE will have a “Giving Wall” set up throughout each day of the event. On the
wall, you’ll find information about three San Antoniobased non-profit organizations, along with a QR code to their donation page.
Each year, the TRE team looks for opportunities to give back to and support its host city and the people who live there. San Antonio is welcoming the run specialty industry with open arms, and our goal is to say thank you through positive impact and care.
TRE’s Giving Tuesday initiative will support the following San Antonio-based organizations:
A nonprofit dedicated to creating a world where every kid has the opportunity to be healthy, fit, and equipped so they reach their highest dreams and aspirations in life. rundownadream.org
A non-profit organization whose mission is to support and enhance parks in San Antonio and Bexar County. saparks.org
San Antonio Sports provides free weekly fitness classes along with 5K runs throughout the year to encourage play, exercise, and healthy habits in the community. activate.sanantoniosports.org
The Running Event continues to evaluate its environmental impact and explore new ways to be more sustainable. With guidance from partner organizations and the City of San Antonio, we’re taking steps to reduce waste and increase awareness around environmental impact, both at TRE and beyond.
Here are some ways we’re making that happen:
The River Walk Run & Cleanup will remove waste from local San Antonio trails and walkways while giving back to the community.
By not carpeting the exhibit hall, TRE avoids the emission of more than 71 metric tons of carbon!
Find compostable utensils in the food court as well as more plantbased menu options.
Unused (and safe) food products will be donated.
Nathan will provide reusable water bottles at their booth to use at the water stations in the convention center.
A limited quantity of finisher medals will be available at the Indie 5K; medals will be made of wood instead of plastic or metal.
TRE has banned paper materials in the attendee bag.
We’re partnering with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation again for TRE 2025! Attendees can easily reduce their carbon footprint by selecting a carbon offset at checkout when registering. Last year, TRE 2024 attendees purchased 83 carbon offsets, reducing 182,984 pounds of CO2e—equivalent to 220,012 vehicle miles.
As always, the TRE team would like to challenge our attendees and exhibitors to join us in being more sustainable and thoughtful about waste and unnecessary printing at this year’s event.
The Running Event is made stronger by our partner organizations. While you’re in San Antonio, take some time to get to know each of these organizations, as their work is critical to the success and progress of our industry. By Danny Smith
When Garrett Sage moved to San Antonio a decade ago, he assumed he and his wife would eventually relocate to Austin. But the longer Sage stayed in San Antonio, the more he relished the south-central Texas city boasting The Alamo, The River Walk and a criminally underrated culinary scene.
“San Antonio’s in its prime, and we love it,” he says.
Now, Sage, the owner of four iRun locations in San Antonio, is excited to show off his adopted hometown to his run specialty industry peers as the 2025 edition of The Running Event descends on San Antonio December 2-4.
“We have great food, great running paths and the weather will be nice when TRE rolls through town in December,” says Sage, whose newest shop is located about four miles north of the Henry B. González Convention Center.
Leveraging his insider knowledge of San Antonio, Sage shares some local recommendations for his fellow TRE attendees.
The Obvious Spot for a Run: The River Walk. While this popular path can get narrow and “touristy” near the convention center, Sage says it quickly opens up when traveling north or south, which makes it great for logging miles with friends old and new.
A Less Obvious Spot for a Run: Just south of the convention center and across César E. Chávez Blvd., check out the King William Historic District and streets, which are home to historic mansions.
For breakfast: Sage notes the ongoing rivalry between San Antonio and Austin for which Texas city dishes up the best breakfast tacos. Visit Con Huevos Tacos on Houston Street, Sage says, for some of San Antonio’s finest.
For lunch: Carnitas Don Raúl on Jones Ave. is about a mile and a half from the convention center but definitely worth visiting for its authentic Mexican cuisine.
For a mid-day jolt: Sage recommends coffee fiends check out CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bistro, which has an outpost in Hemisfair next to the convention center.
For dinner: Sage suggests Bar Loretta in the King William Historic District for a seasonal menu of elevated Texas fare.
For adult beverages: Künstler Brewing is a San Antonio favorite, and its Tap Haus location in Hemisfair serves up some of the brewery’s top drinks in a laid-back beer garden setting.
For evening entertainment: Built around the restored Pearl Brewery, The Pearl is a lively commercial district with chefled restaurants, indie shops and Jazz, TX—a dynamic live music venue.
For something uniquely San Antonio: While Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia on Produce Row is quite touristy, Sage calls this Tex-Mex spot with festive decor and Mexican candies a civic institution.
And if at all possible: Mixtli was San Antonio’s first restaurant to receive a Michelin Star and is a must-go for dinner—if you can score a table. “The best restaurant experience I’ve ever had,” Sage says. Of note, Mixtli’s bar serves up cocktails, agave spirits, and a progressive wine list—no reservation required.
