Local Macarthur resident Lauren Rowe has been fighting Cystic Fibrosis her whole life. But despite having a double lung transplant and the daily battle of living with her condition she works towards helping and empowering others through the work of her charity – gifted life. At 19 years old, Lauren Rowe was only given two weeks left to live but when the call came with the news that she was able to receive a lung transplant, she became a double lung recipient. However, just before Christmas 2014, Lauren’s body began to reject her new lungs. Fortunately, after treatment the deterioration stabilised but she now only lives with 30% lung capacity. After reading statistics that over 90% of transplant patients experience anxiety, depression, guilt, body esteem problems or PTSD and after watching many of her young friends pass away who would have lived if they had received life saving organ transplants, Lauren decided to start her charity ‘Gifted Life’. She works to ensure that recipients of organ transplants have people who support them which allows them to gain belief in themselves. Lauren believes that having support and confidence has a “heavy affect on treatment outcomes and quality of life.” ‘Gifted Life’ uses donations to make up care bags for those who have been unexpectedly admitted into hospital for treatment and have nothing on them, such as something simple like a toothbrush. They also send out care bags to those who are sick at home. These bags include colour therapy books, novels and many other items that they might need. While Lauren and her team work hard to make up and deliver these incredible care bags, they also run an empowerment programme where female recipients are able to spend a day learning how to dress and apply make up. These simple activities allow recipients to feel good about themselves despite the “physical changes from the drugs.” Through this programme, organ transplant recipients are also able to meet others who are in very similar situations. Lauren’s goal for her charity is to work to ensure that “all transplant recipients and chronically ill patients obtain maximum self- esteem and support while positivity managing both ongoing and unexpected treatments, with the help of an educated and accepting community.” Lauren would also love to see an increase in organ donation rates within Australia as an outcome from the community becoming more educated and aware of the importance of Organ Donation. Hope vs Hoping I was recently reading an article by Adam Lee entitled, "Are we ready to face death without religion?" He suggests society is increasingly ready to embrace funerals free from religious trappings, "..we can have readings from any book, poem or song … Rather than mourning, gloom and sermons on sin, we can have ceremonies that are joyful celebrations of the deceased person’s life." Interestingly that doesn't sound like a Christian funeral. I should know - I've taken a few. An Anglican funeral opens with these words, "We come together – to mourn a relative, to honour a departed friend, to dispose reverently of the mortal body and to show sympathy with the bereaved. We believe that those who die in Christ share eternal life with him. Therefore in faith and hope we offer our prayer of thanksgiving and trust to God, in whose loving care we leave our friend; we recall the certainty of our own coming death and judgment; and we proclaim that
Christ is risen, that those who believe in him will rise with him, and that we are united with them in him." Death is hard. The loss is real. It doesn’t help to talk naively about how our friend will be 'watching us from heaven', 'drinking a beer this afternoon', 'smiling and laughing with her knitting in her lap' - because we long for it to be true. Instead, the truly Christian funeral comforts us with the assurance that there is life beyond the grave because Jesus has secured it. We hear Jesus say, "I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live." This service has hope, it has solemnity, it has joy, and it has laughter as well as tears. Yes we celebrate and give thanks too - but not as those who are merely hoping. Jesus vs Hallmark card poems? When it comes to the reality of death I'll invite you to take the gritty cross and resurrection of the historical Jesus - and the solid hope beyond hoping it secures. I can’t find that anywhere else. Major Work Under Way on the $1.6 Billion Northern Road Upgrade
The next phase of the multi-billion dollar The Northern Road upgrade is in full swing with major work now under way on Stage 1 between Narellan and Oran Park. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said as part of the Australian and NSW Governments’ commitment to revitalise the growing western Sydney both governments were pushing ahead to deliver the $1.6 billion 35 kilometre upgrade which includes widening The Northern Road between Narellan and Penrith. “The upgrade is a key project of the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan which will transform road infrastructure, improve travel times and increase road capacity in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions,” Tanya Davies said. Stage 1 work includes widening 3.3 kilometres of The Northern Road to a minimum four lane divided road to increase road capacity between The Old Northern Road at Narellan and Peter Brock Drive at Oran Park. The road is a major arterial corridor servicing the growing South West Priority Land Release Area with the upgrade set to benefit people living in new communities including Oran Park, Turner Road, East Leppington, Austral and Leppington North, Edmondson Park and Catherine Fields. Road users will start to see changes along the road with the installation of safety barriers, temporary signage and line marking.
Member for Camden Chris Patterson said other work will include earthmoving and excavation, relocating utilities as well as piling work in preparation for two new bridges across Narellan Creek. “Once complete, The Northern Road project will deliver significant benefits now and into the future by providing improved road infrastructure for motorists in western Sydney and a high quality connection with the proposed M12 Motorway and Bringelly Road,” Mr Patterson said. “Work will be carried out from 7am to 6pm Monday to Fridays and on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm, weather permitting. “Traffic controllers and signage to guide traffic past the work site will be in place as well as a reduced speed limit to ensure the safety of motorists and workers. “Temporary lane closures will be required to ensure a safe work zone and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time. On-road cyclists may also be required to detour while some of the work is carried out to ensure safety. “The Northern Road Stage 1 is expected to be completed in 2018. “Roads users are thanked for their patience while this important work is carried out.” For more information on The Northern Road Upgrade visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au/wsip

This changing of landscape is something I have been witnessing first hand as the new Church and Parish centre for 'Australia's newest Catholic Parish' of St Mary MacKillop takes shape. This building, that will be located on Oran Park Drive (near the entrance to the Catherine Park Estate) is best described as a purpose built (prefab) structure and will operate as our church and parish centre until a permanent structure is required as the community grows. Between now and the day when our new building opens our weekend Church services (masses) will continue to be held in the library at St Justin's Primary School (94 Oran Park Drive) on Saturday afternoons at 5pm and on Sunday mornings at 10am. I look forward to opening the doors of our new Church and Parish centre in these days ahead. While our new building will open in late April, we look forward to its official blessing and opening by Bishop Peter Ingham on Saturday 28 May at 5pm. Fr David Catterall MTh

The 2016 Camden Show ‘Still a Country Show’ was a great success with more than 40, 000 people attending over the two days on the 12th and 13th of March. The exceedingly hot weather definitely did not deter people as overall comments have been very positive and the show has once again been commended as an amazing event. Highlights of the show included Lumberjacks, Bullock Team, Racing Pigs, Animal Wrangler Show and a Rodeo that was held on the Friday Night. Man Charged Following Child Approach – Harrington Park Police have charged a man after a child was approached at Harrington Park last month. Just before 2pm (Saturday 19 March 2016), the 14-year-old boy was walking along Royal George Drive when a man called out to him. It’s alleged the man made an inappropriate remark to the child before following him. The boy called police and the man walked away. Officers from Camden Local Area Command attended and commenced inquiries. A 61-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Narellan Police Station where he was charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm; and behave in offensive manner in/ near public place/school. Gledswood Homestead + Winery, a World Away From the City + Just Around the Corner! Gledswood Homestead and Winery is a hidden gem in our local area. As you leave Camden Valley Way, you enter the property passing rolling green hills, grazing horses in their pastures and vineyards. The main homestead dates from the early 1800's when James Chisholm built the homestead as a wedding present for his son and new wife. Today the property operates as a Function Venue and Cellar Door. Once a month on a Sunday, Gledswood is open to the public for Family Farm Day offering an authentic Aussie farm experience. The day starts at 11am at the drovers campsite for billy tea and damper while listening to stories from the stockman. Farm activities include a working dog demonstration where you will see clever kelpies round up the sheep and bring them in for shearing. The sheep shearing demonstration is entertaining and a little educational. You can try your hand at whip cracking or boomerang throwing and of course there are plenty of farm animals for the kids to get up close with. Once farm activities are done, there are market stalls with locals selling their craft wares and the Cellar Door is open until 5pm offering craft beers and Australian wines along with a seasonal cafĂŠ style menu and a BBQ menu. The entertainment continues with a jumping castle and garden games for the kids to keep busy while the grown ups relax with some great local live music. Gledswood Farm Day is on the second Sunday of every month except May. Women’s Circle at Brand New Day
Best-Ever Banana Bread Easy • Time 1 hr 45 min • Serves 6
Ingredients • Melted Butter, to Grease • 200g (1 1/3 Cups) Self-Raising Flour • 150g (1 Cup) Plain Flour • 150g (2/3 Cup) Raw Sugar • 20g (1/4 Cup) Desiccated Coconut • 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon • 3 Eggs • 450g Mashed Banana • 160ml (2/3 Cup) Canola Oil • 2 Teaspoons Vanilla Essence • 125g Fresh Raspberries Fig Butter • 100g Butter, at Room Temperature, Chopped • 45g (1/4 Cup) Pure Icing Sugar • 85g (1/4 Cup) Fig Jam

Preheat oven to 150°C. Brush a 7cm-deep, 10 x 20cm (base measurement) loaf pan with melted butter. Line the base and sides with non-stick baking paper. Sift the combined flour into a large bowl. Add the sugar, coconut and cinnamon. Make a well in the centre. Add the eggs, banana, oil and vanilla. Stir until just combined. Gently fold in the raspberries. Pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the surface. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until a skewer inserted into centre comes out clean. Set aside in pan for 20 minutes to cool before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. To make the fig butter, use an electric beater to beat the butter and icing sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the jam and beat until smooth. Cut banana bread into slices and serve with fig butter.

Brand New Day Female Services have started their Women’s Circle activities for 2016 with the first taking place last month. Brand New Day Female Services is a not for profit / volunteer run organisation which provides women with all the help and information they need during times of difficulty. Their website acts as a directory of information where women have access to helpful resources and services. Brand New Day also works to provide women with a platform where they are able to share their stories and experiences in order to empower and support one another. A way in which they achieve this, is through their monthly mingle activity called “Women’s Circle”. Brand New Day Female Services believe that “all females deserve to ‘be and feel safe, well and happy’” and Women’s Circle provides women with the opportunity to work towards that goal. Therese – President of Brand New Day best described the activity of Women’s Circle by saying “With Women’s Circle, there is no beginning and there is no end. Women come and go but the circle is always there.” Women may continue to further their studies, join the work force or continue their responsibilities in the home, but they are always provided with a safe environment where they can communicate and support each other. They have the opportunity to “enjoy conversations and make new friendships.” Women’s Circle takes place at the Oran Park Town Community Room at a cost of $5 per person. How Many Super Funds do you Have? If you have changed jobs, changed your name or moved house, chances are you may have lost track of where your super is invested. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) estimates lost superannuation to be worth around $16.8 billion as at 31 December 20141. By tracking down and consolidating your super accounts, you will save having to pay multiple sets of administration fees. Over the years, this could add up to thousands of dollars towards your final superannuation benefit. Benefits of consolidating your super: • Reduced fees: paying only one administration and/or member fee means additional fees are not eating away your retirement savings. For example, if you're paying $5 per month in member fees on three different accounts, you're paying at least $180 per year in member fees. • It's easier to keep track of the growth of your super savings by having your contributions go into one fund. What's more, you'll receive only one statement or fund update, meaning less paperwork to manage. • It allows you to develop a focused and effective retirement investment strategy, as you don't have a number of neglected, smaller accounts that you lose track of, which get eaten away by fees and inflation. Things you should consider: Insurance Your existing super fund may include death, total and permanent disablement and/or income protection cover. If you want to maintain the same or a greater level of insurance, check with your new super fund if this cover can be established before closing your existing super fund otherwise you may be in a position of having no insurance cover. Time out of the market It generally takes several weeks to close an existing super fund and transfer the funds to a new super fund. This is because the underlying investments in your existing super fund have to be sold and underlying investments in your chosen super fund purchased. During this time, a portion of your funds are likely to be invested in cash rather than your selected assets. This means if the value of your selected assets rise you won't get the full benefit, but if the value drops, you would receive a better return from the cash investment. Fees and costs All super funds charge fees. The fund's product disclosure statement outlines the fees and costs associated with exiting your super fund. Reconciliation
Member for Camden Chris Patterson has reminded schools to register their interest in the Schools’ Reconciliation Challenge for 2016. Mr Patterson said this year, students will be encouraged to create artworks and short stories that reflect the 2016 theme: Always was, Always will be. “The Schools’ Reconciliation Challenge is a platform for students to express their creativity and is an opportunity to have their voice heard on issues that are important and challenging to discuss,” Mr Patterson said. “This year is the first time that students have the choice between two mediums; artworks and short stories. “I know that there are talented young artists and story tellers throughout our region and I look forward to the works that will be created.” The Challenge aims to use art and writing as vehicles to engage students in the reconciliation process, assist educators to teach their students about Indigenous issues in an informed, meaningful and culturally sensitive manner and to foster respectful relationships between schools and local Aboriginal communities. Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Leslie Williams said the Schools’ Reconciliation Challenge is designed to invite discussion about reconciliation in Australia through art. “I encourage all local school students in years five to nine to submit either an artwork or short story that they feel engages with their thoughts on reconciliation.” The competition is open until 10 June 2016.
