Junior Council Meeting – Just Like The Real Thing!
ď ˛ď€ There was some spirited debate in Council Chambers recently when the Junior Councillors took centre stage.
There was spirited debate in Council Chambers recently when the 2015 Junior Council Meeting was held. The Junior Councillors debated two topics – Making Better Playgrounds, Parks and Sporting Fields and Amalgamation of Penrith Council with another Council. The result of their debates showed that the Junior Councillors did not want to reduce the number of sporting fields in the city and that they wanted Penrith Council to remain as a single entity. Penrith Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler, OAM was impressed with all the Junior Councillors who spoke at the meeting. “The meeting was chaired by Junior Mayor Jesse Penza of Holy Family School in Luddenham and she did a tremendous job,� Cr Fowler said. “The students were all excellent public speakers and had well-rounded arguments to support their case. “It was one of the best Junior Council meeting I’ve ever been involved with and we’ve been doing them for 14 years.� A record number of schools entered the competition this year with Council receiving more than 150 entries from 21 schools in the Penrith Local Government Area. What is Happening in Your Local Anglican Parish? Last month St Thomas’ at Mulgoa and St Paul’s at Warragamba were delighted to welcome Libby Leach, a CMS missionary to services at both churches. Libby has been a CMS missionary for eighteen and a half years and she was able to share with both the Churches about her very challenging and interesting gospel work in Paris and particularly the work she has been undertaking with university students. Also last month, the Parish held a combined service at St Thomas’. The Bishop of Western Sydney, the Right Reverend Ivan Lee will preside over this year’s Confirmation service. It is always a delight to host a visit from our Regional Bishop. For all of us it will be a very joyous occasion. The Leura Gardens Festival, now in its 51st year, is a must-visit attraction for gardeners from all over Australia. And with the sad ending of the long-running Open Gardens Australia, many gardeners are looking to Leura to provide their necessary “gardening fix” for the year. This year’s Leura Gardens Festival will take place from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 11, 2015. Visitors are this year being invited to experience the magic of Spring in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Ten wonderful Leura gardens will be open for the festival, including two brand new to the festival, two returning after a break, plus several magical old favourites. And in an exclusive offer for tour groups, special garden viewings are available for groups of 20+ people in the five days (Monday, September 28 – Friday, October 2, 2015) prior to the main festival. Three of these gardens will only be open in the pre-festival period. Miracles Do Happen: A Night For The Lewin Family

On September 18 last year, Katrina Lewin, wife to Craig and mother of three beautiful children; Matthew, 13, Joshua, 11 and Tahlee, 6, from Silverdale, was thrown the biggest fight of her life when she collapsed with a brain aneurysm. The weeks and months ahead for Katrina were so fragile, but she fought and fought and never gave up. Her incredible determination along with her wonderful supporting family and friends who were beside her all the time brought her back…a walking miracle. Katrina defeated the odds and surprised the doctors. It was a miracle that she was able to walk out of the hospital, but she did with brain damage and the loss of sight in her left eye. Recently Katrina received the news she has another aneurysm on the other side of her brain. Katrina and Craig now face the agonising decision whether to proceed with life threatening surgery, or leave it in the hands of the gods. Craig, Katrina’s husband, has given up work to be her full time carer and this unfortunately has taken a financial toll on their family. Together with Holy Family Primary School, they are holding a major benefit night in honour of the Lewin Family. Appropriately named ‘Miracles Do Happen’. The night is set for Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 6:30pm to 11:30pm at Penrith Rugby League Club, in ‘The Chairman’s Lounge’, Pepper Stadium. The
MC for the event will be Lars Peterson from WSFM with live music provided by Percy and Steve. The cost is $120 per person tickets went on sale from the 1st July. Some of the prizes on offer will include fantastic weekends away, generous service and luxury vouchers and NRL, Cricket Australia, Football NSW and English Premier League sports memorabilia in the auction. Pastors Corner Have you ever felt all alone? I think most of us have, at some time or another. It is not a great feeling, and so often at the same time, there are people all around us; it is so easy to feel lonely in a crowd. What is it about loneliness, if it’s not about proximity to other people? Certainly it is about feeling valued and accepted by others, knowing that other people care about you; at one extreme of those emotions they love you. All of us have challenges in life, sometimes we share those difficult moments with others, and at times we face them on our own. Is loneliness, more about being understood? Is another person ever able to understand what you have are going through at this point of time? Or are they able to understand the pain you feel from past experiences, the loss of those that you loved? What I do know about loneliness is that it wears you down it leaves you vulnerable to being hurt, misunderstood, worse still being abused by others. I have found that the Bible so often covers way that I feel: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.� (Matthew 11:28 The Message). VALE – Heather Joy Harrison 4 November1935 – 25 July 2015 Heather Joy Harrison of ‘BonGra-Joy’, Bent’s Basin Rd Wallacia died on Saturday 25 the July 2015. Heather Joy Harrison was born on Monday, 4/11/1935 at Epping and lived the first 3 years of her life in Whyalla Avenue, Epping. In 1938 when her Dad, Norman Harrison, purchased the Wallacia Farm, The Family of Mum Evie, Bonnie, Graham and Little Joy, moved up onto the Farm in April, 1938. Joy attended Wallacia Primary School, then on to Penrith Central School which later became Penrith High School. While at school she excelled academically and in sport winning a ‘sports Blue’-name on the top of Sports Honour Board. She also taught Sunday school at Wallacia. On leaving school, Joy joined her father working on the farm and her mother (initially as driver)in Community work as Mulgoa CWA treasurer, delivering Meals on Wheels, Wallacia Hospital Auxiliary to Nepean District Hospital and assistant Secretary of Luddenham Agricultural show Society. The latter a real family affair for 3 months as everything was done by hand. No Computers! No emails! No Internet!!!!

In 1959, Joy became interested in Guiding at 1st Warragamba Guides. Becoming Tawny Owl initially, then Brown Owl till forced to give up 1985. Also at the time a member of NSW Guiding Executive Committee. Joy remained actively involved with the “Tara� Guide Camp at Silverdale till it was sold. On the death of her father, in 1984, Joy managed the farm and cared for her Mother. Her Mother died 1995. Joy Continued cheerfully managing the property, House and Shed being destroyed in Christmas Day 2001 bushfires. Joy Rebuilt using the insurance and a bank loan and remained a caring Farmer of “Bon-Gra-Joy�. Joy almost 80 years, passed away at St Andrew’s House, Meredith Rd Strathfield on Saturday 25th July, 2015, is survived by Siblings, Graham and Robyn, losing sister Bonnie 12 months before. Lovingly remembered by her Nephews [David, Phillip, Stuart, Nicholas and Christopher] and Nieces [Alison, Jenifer Joanne and Penelope] and Grand Nephews [Kristofer, James, Timothy, Thomas and Oliver] and Nieces [Kida- Jane, Sophia, Samantha and Elizabeth]. She has dedicated her life to helping others in Community work and to run the Farm. Rest in Peace Joy!

Nepean Food Services rewarded its volunteers with an outing to Warragamba Dam. Our volunteers perform many important services for clients. These services include frozen meal deliveries, heating meals in the home, social support both in the home and at our luncheon clubs and special outings, driving buses and a host of admin and service supports. In the Warragamba area, volunteers assist with all of the above tasks as well as medical transports. The volunteers at Nepean Food Service are a great crew that loves what they do and have a passion for helping others. The day was supported by regular sponsor Guardian Funerals who provided their bus complete with driver so that the volunteers could enjoy their well-earned day out. This month I said I would write about what to do if you are concerned that your child may have a disability or disorder. The main difficulties that I see in children in the work that I do are autism, anxiety, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. The national statistics on these conditions are: • Autism – 1 in 100 children • Anxiety – 1 in 10 children • ADHD – 1 in 10 children • Sensory processing disorder – 1 in 20 children Of course, there are alot of other disorders and syndromes that can affect children’s thinking, feeling, and doing. Frequently, parents are concerned about getting their child assessed for fear of their child being labelled. It is my experience that children like to know the reason why they are different to other children, it makes sense to them. A diagnosis also helps teachers to accommodate your child’s unique needs and abilities. And more importantly, the earlier the diagnosis the earlier you can start intervention, and early intervention makes a huge difference in the lives of children. You can discuss your concerns about your child’s development with your General Practitioner (doctor). Your GP may refer you to a paediatrician or you may ask for a Mental Health Care Plan which will allow you to claim a Medicare rebate on the fees to see a psychologist or occupational therapist for an assessment. Psychologists and paediatricians can assess for autism and ADHD. Psychologists can assess for anxiety. Occupational Therapists can assess for sensory processing disorder. It is very important to get an assessment by a professional and not to diagnose your child yourself or listen to other people who are not qualified to give you advice. Once you have a diagnosis, there are services which provide support for parents depending on the different ability your child has. For example, the Luke Priddis Foundation, ASPECT, Northcott, Lifestart, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services, and Stepping Stones Triple P. Parents find that connecting with other parents who understand their child’s challenges, offer a listening ear and helpful suggestions, is very supportive and a good form of self-care. These services may also offer activities for the children or the family as a whole.
Wollondilly Library Service is reminding residents that due to the refurbishment of the current library building, Picton Library is moving to a temporary location and will be closed for a short time. During this transition the Library will be closed from 7 September to 21 September and will be re-opening in the Old Rural Fire Service (RFS) building on the corner of Menangle and Colden Streets. Luke Johnson, General Manager, said ‘the library will be operating as more of a shop front at the temporary location with the majority of the library collection stored on-site, accessible via the library staff. “The Mobile Libraries will not be affected and will continue to provide access to books, DVDs, CDs and e-Resources.” “There is also the option of using Wollondilly Library’s online resources which are available 24/7. Also, holiday programs, storytime and bookbubs will be provided in the Wollondilly Shire Hall and the community will still have access to computers, wifi, printing and copying. Last month, Mulgoa Public School held their major fundraiser, the P&C Country Market Day. The day started off with some very heavy rain and eased a tiny bit just as the trucks arrived with the rides. With raincoats on, they continued to set up, hoping the weather would be kind and ease off. Luckily, the rain did stop just before the event was due to start but the weather was threatening all day. To add to it, there were a couple of other local events on the day, that Mulgoa Public School had to compete with but this little school dug deep and pushed on to provide a fantastic event. Unfortunately, a lot of the stall holders decided not to risk the weather and did not attend but the ones that stuck it out reported to have had a great day. Word has it that it was definitely one to remember. With wonderful reviews from all, this little school proved that with organisation, determination and a fantastic team of volunteers‌anything is possible! Congratulations Mulgoa Public School, the day was a huge success.

Pomegranate Chicken Easy • Time 30min • Serves 4
• 2/3 Cup Chicken Stock Ingredients • 2 Tbsp Honey • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil 1 1/2 Cups Wholemeal • 800g Chicken Thigh Fillets, • Couscous Trimmed, Cut in Half • 1 1/2 Cups Boiling Water • 1 Brown Onion, Thinly • 1/2 Pomegranate, Seeds Sliced • 1/2 Cup Walnuts, Toasted • 2 Garlic Cloves, Thinly • Steamed Green Beans, to Sliced Serve • 1/4 Tsp Ground Cinnamon • 1/2 Cup Fresh Mint Leaves • 1/4 Tsp Ground Turmeric • Pinch Ground Nutmeg Method 1. Heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Season chicken and cook in 2 batches for 4 minutes or until well browned (this will give you a rich dark sauce). Set aside. Reduce heat to medium-high and cook onion, stirring, for 3 minutes or until browned. Add garlic and spices and cook stirring for 1 minute. Return chicken to pan with stock and honey. Bring to a simmer. Gently simmer, turning chicken to coat occasionally, for 5 minutes or until sauce thickens and chicken is cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, place couscous and boiling water in a heatproof bowl. Season with salt and stir. Stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff up grains with a fork. 3. Add pomegranate and walnuts to the chicken. Letter to the Editor Reply to last months Wallacia quick facts The first four facts are correct. The landmarks are the weir, third bridge and the hotel. Little Bondi was a popular swimming hole but no longer exists as John Walsh dredged out all the sand in the 1970s. The hotel was not designed by the Fowler Family. In 1937 the land was bought from John K Fowler for 700 pound. The license was transferred from the Imperial Hotel, Rooty Hill and opened for business on 3/12/1937. The cost of the building was 19,751 pound and the builders were Messrs. Lipscomb and Price, the architects were Ross and Rowe and the licensee was Theresa Clarke. The Wallacia area was an original grant to John Blaxland by Gov. Macquarie in 1813. This went from South Creek at St Marys, where his brother George Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson left to cross the mountains, to the Nepean River. A further 777 acres was granted and went from the Nepean River to the Warragamba River. He called the property Luddenham. Later he sold off parts of the property, some to George Cox and the other part in Wallacia to Charles Nicholson. John Blaxland built the first crossing of the river, hence the name Blaxland Crossing. Nicholson’s home was where the shops are today. Robert Wallace, a constable, lived in this building. Mr. Leggo who lived in “The Pines� would ride his horse to Penrith for the mail and drop it off to R Wallace. People would say “we’re going to Wallace to get the mail� and was the unofficial post office from 1885. In 1905 Australia Post took over the mail service and as there was another Wallace near Wagga there was a lot of confusion. Australia Post wanted to call the area “Boondah� meaning native apple but the locals did not like the name. The Principal of the school, Mr Campbell suggested the name Wallacia being a combination of Wallace and Acacia (wattle). This was registered 1/6/1906. There was a guest house called “Mountview/Riverview� built around 1870s where Shelley Avenue is, and housed the workers who built the second crossing or the old bridge. The area was never called Riverview. Where does Wikipedia get their information? I have documentation for all of the above. The information on the Post Office is correct. After John and Ethel Fowler who had the PO/Shop/Newsagency where the Nicholson home was and where the shops are now, Bernie & Marjorie Fowler moved into the PO where is now in the 1950s and was where the manual telephone exchange was. The PO is now run by Ross (the Penrith Mayor) and his wife Margaret Fowler . The brief information on the PO is correct.

They were both super busy with the rigours of work and parenthood and felt the flame had gone out of their relationship. We are looking at three strategies to help rekindle their intimacy. Today we look at the final strategy. One of the things I like to do when working with couples is ask them to reverse roles (to the extent possible). In other words, one person in the relationship literally switches regularly held duties and activities with their spouse. Examples: If you are the one who usually does the cooking, let your partner attend to it for the night. If your partner is the one who always mows the lawn, you assume that task. You get the general point. What I have generally found that happens during this activity is a new sense of awareness on the part of both individuals about one another. The most frequent comment made in fact is: “I had no idea what this was like for you.” By literally walking in our partners’ shoes – even for a day – we gain fresh insight into their life and increase our awareness about their experiences. Summing Things Up Breathing new life back into a long term relationship isn’t easy. Anybody who claims otherwise frankly doesn’t know what they are talking about. It takes real effort to keep a sense of connection alive. By remember to not presume you know what the other is going to say and treating them like you have just met them, using active listening and reversing relational roles, you can help to keep the connection strong with your other half and really enjoy their presence in your life.

Theresa had a Baby Girl!!!! Congratulations to Theresa and her partner on the safe delivery of baby Zahra Grace. Theresa is currently on maternity leave. RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital starting on Monday 17th August 2015. Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Renai, Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Eden, Lizzie, Jessica, Ben and Vicki cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, other delicious slices, and of course cupcakes. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony and Bella loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community, through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations,
fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants, to support its vital daily work. We wish every day was cupcake day! Dog Lovers Show Was Fantastic The Sydney Dog Lovers Show on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August 2015 at The Hordern Pavilion was fantastic! Camille Brandt attended the Dog Lovers Show as a special guest of Rose-Hip Vita and took Pony and Bella. Camille answered numerous questions from the public at the Rose-Hip Vital stall. I was so proud of Pony and Bella, they loved all of the attention. Pony was such a crowd pleaser. Bella was clever (as usual), she just laid down and let the people come to her for a pat. Pony walked up to everyone for a pat and by lunchtime he needed a well earned nap. The Sydney Dog Lovers Show had over 150+ exhibitors showcasing dog products and services in Australia. So many freebies! There were so many celebrities, including Dr Katrina & The Wonderdogs, Dr Lisa Chimes (Bondi Vet), James & Anthony (Village Vets Australia on the The LifeStyle Channel) and Laura Vissaritis (Dognitive Therapy) as MC.
