Last month, Tanya Davies MP visited Wallacia Public School to have a look at the school’s newly constructed electronic noticeboard, which was installed as a part of a $16,977 NSW Government Community Building Partnership grant. Wallacia Public School Principal Mark Davies, P&C President Jody Smith, along with teachers and students showed Tanya Davies their new electronic sign this morning. Principal Mark Davies commented that the new noticeboard allowed the school to communicate far more effectively with their community. Tanya Davies said that she was delighted to visit the school to see the upgrade and meet the students, who have given the project a thumbs up. “I’m so pleased to hear of the difference that this new notice board is making in communication for this close-knit school community,� said Tanya Davies. Wallacia Public School was one of 13 successful grant applicants who received a share of $300,000 in the 2014 round of community infrastructure grants. Submissions have just been completed for 2015 Community Building Partnership funding. “I’m looking forward to seeing more community groups being able to build the infrastructure and purchase the equipment they need to better serve the wider community,� Tanya Davies said. Pastor’s Corner Eight year old Danny Dutton was answering an assignment, which was to “Explain God”. Part of what Danny wrote was as follows: One of God’s main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn’t make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn’t have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. God’s second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn’t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn’t go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad’s head asking for something they said you couldn’t have. Jesus is God’s Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn’t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn’t know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K. Eight year old Danny has a strong sense of who God is; we adults over complicate it, don’t we. Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa has joined Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant and Attorney General Gabrielle Upton in launching Graffiti Removal Day, which will be held on Sunday, 18 October 2015. Tanya Davies said the community is fed up with graffiti tags staining homes, businesses and public areas. “Graffiti Removal Day is a great opportunity for community
groups and local residents in Mulgoa to get involved in the graffiti clean-up and send vandals a message,” said Tanya Davies. Graffiti costs over $100 million each year to clean up in NSW alone; money far better spent on improving services for the community. “Graffiti Removal Day has been getting bigger every year and grassroots community support is crucial to its success,” said Tanya Davies, “The only tag we want to see is the hashtag #rolluptorollout that will be all over social media as we encourage a record number of volunteers to join the graffiti clean-up.” Last year about 2,000 volunteers removed 21,000 square metres of graffiti from about 275 sites across NSW, saving the government and private property owners an estimated $1.5 million. Deputy Premier Troy Grant said graffiti is an ugly stain on all communities and that it is frustrating for people to see homes, businesses and public amenities vandalised for no reason. Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said Graffiti Removal Day was an opportunity for volunteers to show pride in their communities and send a message to vandals that their destructive and criminal behaviour won’t be tolerated. Graffiti Removal Day is a joint initiative between the NSW Government and Rotary Down Under. It is supported by a range of organisations including the NRL, Scouts Australia, Girl Guides NSW & ACT, Australian Men’s Shed Association (NSW Branch), PCYC, NSW Police, high schools and local councils. Development + Tourism Opportunities Top of the Agenda Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown has met with a delegation from Mentougou District of Beijing and the new owners of Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club to discuss development and tourism opportunities in Penrith. Councillor McKeown said the meeting was very positive in addressing the growing demand for quality conferencing and accommodation venues. “Penrith lacks large scale accommodation properties which in turn can affect the City’s ability to attract large scale conferences and events,” Cr McKeown said. “The new owners of Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club are interested in developing their property further which may contribute to the availability of quality accommodation and conference facilities in Penrith. “Council is continuing to open the door to new projects, capital investment and partnerships to grow our City.”

At the September meeting of the Luddenham Progress Association, it was agreed to push to have Luddenham come under the control of Penrith Council. At the moment, half of Luddenham is in Liverpool Council the other half with Elizabeth Drive and the Northern Road being the divide. With the Western Sydney Airport going ahead, the Progress as well as most of the Luddenham residents are pushing to have the boundary changed to follow the Airport fence line from Elizabeth Drive to Willowdene Avenue and then to follow the boundary of Luddenham to meet up with the current border running parallel with Park Road. Recent communication with the RMS have indicated that the Central and Campbell Street options have not been taken out of route options analysis for The Northern Road Stage 4. Their project team is still undertaking investigations and assessing all four shortlisted options. A preferred option is expected to be announced by December this year. They also stated that they have received very little support for the Central and Campbell Street options from the community during the consultation period. This feedback will inform part of the assessment process going forward to select a preferred option. With houses being demolished daily clearing the site for the Western Sydney Airport, Luddenham has lost a lot of residents with most of Stage 1 of the Airport actually being in Luddenham. The Show Society has also confirmed that the 2016 Luddenham Show will be held on the 20th & 21st of February and it will be a very special year as the Society enters its 125th year.

How much of what we know is based on what we have heard from the media or hearsay rather than from the research? » 1 in 10 children have ADHD. » ADHD is NOT bad kids or bad parents. » ADHD is real. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Just like children with autism (1 in 100 children) or Down Syndrome (1 in 800 children), children with ADHD are born with unique challenges. Children with ADHD have trouble with: attention and focus; staying still; and making good choices. The ABSOLUTE BEST treatment for ADHD is medication. Forget everything you have heard in the media about how bad the medication is for kids. Just as children with diabetes or epilepsy require medication to be well, children with ADHD require medication to get the necessary chemicals into the frontal lobes of their brain so they can function better. Nothing else, not a good diet or alternative therapies or fish oil tablets, can get those chemicals into the frontal lobes. Medication is the only thing. Taking medication helps children with ADHD to focus and pay attention. This means that they have a better chance of learning, making friends, and enjoying the opportunities that other children have. The medication for ADHD has actually been around for 80 years and advances in medical research mean that there are more choices now. Research over the past 40 years has shown that children with ADHD who do not take medication are at a higher risk when they are adults of: drug and alcohol abuse; mental health problems; dropping out of school; unemployment; incarceration; car accidents; and relationship breakdown with family and peers. The NEXT BEST treatment for ADHD is positive parenting – things like Triple P. However, positive parenting does not work unless the child is taking medication. Without the medication, the child won’t have the attention span or working memory to listen or understand. Parents who have a child with ADHD have to battle the stigma of ADHD every day. As 1 in 10 children have ADHD, this stigma leaves a lot of people (children and their families) not feeling very good about themselves, and feeling isolated and alone. The stigma prevents parents from making the best possible choices about their child’s treatment. Parenting is a tough job. Parenting a child with ADHD is a tougher job. If you know a parent who has a child with ADHD, sometimes the best advice is an ear to listen and a heart to understand. If you know a child with ADHD, they having a problem, they are not the problem NCNS and parents from the ADHD Support Group will be at Westfield Penrith (Big W end) on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of October raising awareness about ADHD. On the 16th October, we will be holding an ADHD seminar for parents wanting to know more about ADHD.

Wollondilly Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Simon Landow has sworn an oath to stand up to domestic violence and wants to use his term as Mayor to talk with the community about this important issue. According to domestic violence website whiteribbon.org.au, “over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence” and “in Australia, one in four children is exposed to domestic violence.” Mayor, Cr Simon Landow said “Domestic violence is happening everywhere and the statistics are appalling, 63 woman this year. The fact that woman and children can be put at risk everyday by their partners or relatives is disgusting to most of us. Is there something we can do? I believe that while men keep turning a blind eye to domestic violence it will continue. Only by confronting the perpetrators — whether they are family, colleagues or mates — and telling them “enough is enough” can we make a difference.” “Whiteribbon.org.au says that men can be involved as individuals and can stand up to violence. The website provides tips for how you can respond if you witness domestic violence, if you are aware of domestic violence and standing up against violence. I encourage people to have a look at domestic violence websites, think about what can be done and begin a change in attitudes.” If you are interested in raising awareness about domestic violence you can check the following websites Whiteribbon. org.au, Ourwatch.org.au. Core Strength Work for Chronic Lower Back Pain Due to Slipped Disc? If you’ve read some of my previous articles then you may have gleaned that tight inflamed muscle & connective tissues in and around the spine are the cause of most chronic back pain either directly or indirectly. And if you’ve suffered from chronic back pain then you may have come across someone spouting the conventional wisdom of ‘poor core strength as the problem that may have led to your sore back and that core strengthening may be the solution to back pain’. I regularly see clients who have come in with long standing ‘chronic’ back pain, many of whom have been doing prescribed core strengthening exercise religiously. In some cases these exercises helped for a while, in others not, either way their back pain has remained. This is because the core strength theory is fundamentally flawed. Here’s why. Although an inflamed back can be due to many causes let’s look at an acute injury such as a ruptured disc. When a person has such an injury of the spine, the back muscles and connective tissue swell, become inflamed and lock up around the injury. It’s a standard protective mechanism that’s described in many standard medical texts. Once the muscles inflame & tighten, in most cases they will remain that way (unless work is done specifically to de-inflame & lengthen the muscles) and if disc protrusion exists, it will likely remain protruded. Doing strength work of any type builds muscle but also causes muscles shortening and reduced range of motion unless regular stretching of the same muscles occurs. Doing core strengthening exercise will tighten core muscles so for a back injury involving a slipped disc (back tight maintaining disc in the protruded position) this is exactly the last thing one should do. Key to remediating this type of back injury is to do exactly the opposite. Completely stop core exercises, use manual therapy to de-inflame & lengthen all affected tissue carefully. The Men’s Shed Update The lads are still busy down at the Shed with various projects underway. We have sold out of our Mynah Bird Traps, so more are being assembled and will be ready by the time you read this article. A very worthwhile job which we have just completed was for WIRES - they wanted some Possum Boxes. With help from Bunnings who supplied the wood, brackets, screws, etc, we did the cutting up and assembling and had great pleasure in handing over the finished goods to Val Chew (Wires) and Amy Rawlings (Bunnings). They (the boxes) looked quite good and hope the possums appreciate a nice new home! Just a reminder that we are open 3 days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we also have a permanent Garage Sale on Friday morning as new goods are coming in all the time. 2x 500g Packets Potato Gnocchi 100g Butter 2-3 Garlic Cloves, Thinly Sliced 1/2 Cup Fresh Oregano Leaves

Cook gnocchi in a large saucepan of boiling water following packet directions. Drain. Return to pan. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until just foaming. Add the garlic and season with salt and pepper. Simmer until the butter just starts to brown. Add the oregano to the butter mixture. Cook for a further 1 minute. Pour the butter mixture over the gnocchi and shake the pan to coat.

General Approval to Burn and Other Pile Burning Approvals Wollondilly Shire residents are reminded that the Bush Fire Danger Period commences on 1 October 2015 and will remain in force until 31 March 2016 or unless otherwise directed by the Rural Fire Service. A Fire Permit issued by the Rural Fire Service will be required for any backyard and pile burning during this Bush Fire Danger Period until further notice. Before ANY burning can take place during this period the property owner needs to contact Council for advice. If appropriate, a General Notice issued in accordance with the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2010 will be issued as a first step. The issue of this notice does not allow you to burn. You must then make application to the NSW Rural Fire Service, (Picton Office) to obtain an Approval to Burn prior to the commencement of the burn. During this period inspections of the proposed pile burn will be carried out by the RFS. Previous approvals issued by Council are suspended during the Bush Fire Danger Period. STEP 1: Contact Council and make application for Pile Burn. STEP 2: Application determined STEP 3: If approved a General Notice will be issued. (This does not allow you to burn) STEP 4: Contact the NSW Rural Fire Service, Picton Office to seek approval to burn Residents should also be aware that unapproved burning could lead to heavy fines for the property owner. Grease and line a 20cm square pan with baking paper, leaving plenty overhanging the sides. Place biscuits in a food processor and whiz to fine crumbs. Add melted butter, condensed milk, desiccated coconut and lemon zest, then whiz until well combined. Press the mixture into the prepared pan and chill for 2 hours or until firm. For the icing, combine icing sugar, lemon juice and remaining 1 tbs softened butter in a bowl, stirring until smooth. Spread icing over slice and sprinkle with toasted flaked coconut. Allow to set for 1 hour, then slice into 12 rectangles.

So he sent them Beauty and Ugliness, who happened to be two women. Ugliness was in rags — not pleasant to look at and morally despicable. Beauty was splendidly dressed, and her outer good looks were matched by inner harmony and goodness. The two women started their journey together. They had to cross a desert and walk a long, long time before reaching humanity. Towards the end of the journey they were tired and hot; they passed by a lake, so Ugliness said: how about a swim? Beauty agreed. They got undressed and left their clothes on the shore. Beauty swam far away, but Ugliness stayed near the shore. As soon as Beauty was out of sight, she got out of the water, took Beauty’s clothes, and went on by herself. When Beauty swam back, she realized she had been robbed. She was left with the rags; so she wore them. That is how Beauty and Ugliness came to humanity: each with the other’s clothes. We are told not to judge a book by its cover… but we do. I remember reading about a man who had been blind since birth saying the gift off his blindness was that he didn’t judge people by how they looked. Lets hope we can be open to the beauty of each person we encounter even iff they do present in rags!
Man Charged After Cannabis Plants + Snakes Seized at Home - Warragamba A man has been charged after police allegedly seized 91 cannabis plants, four snakes, and other items at a home in Warragamba last month. About 12.30pm (Tuesday 1 September 2015), following investigations into the supply of drugs in the area, police executed a search warrant at a home on First Street, Warragamba. During the search warrant, police allegedly located a hydroponics set-up, and seized 91 cannabis plants, dried and pre-packaged cannabis, four snakes (two albino carpet pythons and two woma pythons), and other items. All items were seized and will undergo forensic examinations. The snakes were seized by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. At the home, police arrested a 35-year-old man. He was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with; - Cultivate commercial quantity of prohibited plants, - Cultivate by enhanced indoor means, - Supply prohibited drug, - Possess prohibited drug, and - Possess restricted substance. He was refused bail and was due to appear at Penrith Local Court the following day (Wednesday 2 September 2015). Investigations are continuing. Source: www.police.nsw.gov.au/news
Fatal Crash – Luddenham Police are investigating following a fatal car crash at Luddenham near Penrith last month. Just before 2pm (Saturday 5 September 2015), emergency services responded to reports of a car crash on The Northern Road, 500m north of Park Road. On arrival, officers from St Marys Local Area Command and Traffic and Highway Command located a Holden Captiva that had crashed into a tree. The driver and sole occupant, a woman, died at the location.
Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for any witnesses that have not yet spoken to officers, to come forward. The scene will be examined by specialist forensic officers. Initial investigations indicate that the car was driving north along The Northern Road and has left the road and crashed into a tree. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

In January Wollondilly Shire Council launched a “Koala Hotlineâ€? so the Community could assist us with information about this iconic Australian animal. To help preserve native wildlife we are mapping the movements of koalas. We hope to raise awareness about the increasing population of koalas and remind motorists to take care on the roads and drive slowly especially at night. What do I do if I see a koala? • Do NOT attempt to pat a koala! They may look cuddly, but koalas have sharp claws and can be aggressive if threatened. Stay a safe distance away to take photos. • Report your sighting, or evidence of activity (scats, scratchings, bellowing, etc) to Council’s • Koala Hotline 4677 1100 • If the koala appears injured call: WIRES 4684 1656 What can I do to help? • Cars and dogs pose the biggest risk to koalas. So it is suggested that: • Keep dogs secured while you are not at home and preferably indoors at night. Consider owning a small dog. • Dogs should be kept on a leash at all times outside the home. Notify Council if you see dogs roaming or unleashed. • Erect koala friendly fences. Open form fencing (wire, post and rail) or palings are best. Is Now the Time to Invest? Everyone is talking about property at the moment. We’ve seen some fantastic gains in the market over the last few years and many people believe that there is still strong growth to come. Others believe that we’re nearing the end of the growth cycle and the market will be flat for the next few years. Still others believe that a property bubble is forming and it’s about to burst. Of course nobody has a crystal ball but the consensus amongst economists is that there is no property bubble. Given that there is still a considerable under supply of properties (in Sydney) and a low interest rate environment for the foreseeable future, property values should continue to grow. Of course an investment in property should be considered a long term investment which means that short term fluctuations in value are largely irrelevant. Instead of chasing short term capital gains which is largely out of your control, astute investors find opportunities in all market conditions by following a few simple rules. 1. Research. Know the market, determine demand for different property types, understand demographics, population movements and planned infrastructure upgrades. 2. Build an Investment Strategy. Start with the end in mind. What is it you want to achieve in the long term and build a strategy that will deliver. 3. Keep emotions under control. Investments should be made based on factual information. Falling in love with the wrong property could cost you and fear can make you pass on the opportunity of a lifetime. When emotion goes up, intellect goes down. 4. Manage your risks. All investments carry some risk they can be managed. A simple exercise is to write a list of everything you can think of that can go wrong. Then work through the list to mitigate each risk.
