Remembrance Day Memorial Service for Warragamba
This month, on Thursday the 11th of November is Remembrance Day. There will be a Remembrance Day Memorial Service held at the Warragamba Memorial Park at 11:00am and everyone is welcome. This years’ service will also follow COVID safe practices. The Warragamba ANZAC Committee are currently planning their next project to raise funds to purchase other war memorabilia. In 2018, it saw the group unveil the six-foot bronze statue of the lone soldier, that now proudly adorns Warragamba Memorial Park. “Each year, we have this service to pay our respects to all the fallen men and women we have lost at war. Without their sacrifice, we would not live in this beautiful country” said Hellen Dillon, member of the Warragamba ANZAC Committee to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. For more information about the Remembrance Day Memorial Service, search ‘Warragamba ANZAC Committee’ on Facebook or email them at warragambaanzaccommittee@ gmail.com. r

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner Earlier in the year, I was undergoing radiation therapy. I was talking to a lady, who was also undergoing treatment. She had been brought up going to church but had not been for several years. She asked me “Do you think I am damned?” Her comment took me by surprise, and I responded, “Why would you think that?” Over the next few minutes, we shared together about what it means to follow Jesus. Just before we parted, I had the privilege of praying with her. It is so easy to think that we have moved away from God and that there is no way to come back to him. It reminds me of a story in the bible (Luke 19), about a man called Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a Jewish man who worked as a tax collector. Tax collectors were hated by their fellow Jews because they were collecting taxes for the Romans. It was common practice for tax collectors to overcharge taxes and then to ‘pocket’ the difference for their own personal gain. As Jesus entered Jericho, the crowds gathered around to see him. Zacchaeus, being fairly short, climbed a tree so that he would see this man called Jesus. As Jesus came past the tree, Jesus looked up and said, “Come down, I must stay at your house today”. The crowd muttered that Jesus was going as a guest to the place of a sinner. I expect that this crowd thought too, that this man was damned. As a result of Jesus’ visit, Zacchaeus gave half of his possessions to the poor and paid back four times over, those who he had robbed. Jesus said of this encounter, “Today salvations has come to this house, For Jesus, came to seek and to save what was lost”. No matter how long it has been, since we talked to God, Jesus always waits, to welcome us back into relationship with Him. My prayer is that you too, will come back to Him.

Mulgoa’s Brittanie Shipway has made her silver screen debut, starring in the short film Intelligent Design. Intelligent Design was filmed earlier this year in Parramatta. Brittanie stars alongside Australian comedian Neel Kolhatkar. “The film is about a young yuppie couple who set out to design their own baby; from the baby’s sex, right down to eye colour, height and everything. But when you play around with biology, will you even be able to recognise you own kid? It’s a really fun short film written and directed by Ben Mizzi. He told me about his idea for the film and then within days had sent me a fully completed script. The guy works like lightning!” said Brittanie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Having starred in many plays and musicals, Brittanie found the challenge of film much different. “A background in musicals and Shakespeare isn’t much help when it comes to screen acting; it’s completely different. On stage, you have to be larger than life, but the camera requires minute subtlety. The set feels completely different to a performance as well, because in theatre, you practice for weeks while the creative team and crew prepare the lights and the costumes and the set. “In film, we have little to no rehearsals, we just show up on the day and roll the camera when the crew are ready to roll. There are so many mechanics and details that everyone is in charge off, from the focus puller to the cinematographer - it really is a team effort. Actors are the smallest part of it!” she echoed. Brittanie’s experience working with the film’s architect, Ben Mizzi, was positive and she may make another film. “I really enjoy working with Ben Mizzi, and we’ve talked about different topics that intrigue us. I wouldn’t mind giving screen work another crack. In the Australia Arts industry, it is imperative that you spread out into as many fields as possible, so it would never be something I ruled out” Brittanie replied. She estimates losing about 26 months of work due to the pandemic and is now looking forward to new opportunities next year. “There’s hope on the horizon. I’ve gotten into writing recently and it all started at my Aunt and Uncles house in Mulgoa! I have been lucky enough to win several grants from Create NSW and Australia Council to workshop my plays and musicals. My first play A Letter for Molly may pop up next year. I’ll also be set to return to The Sapphires for a regional tour of Australia” she finished. r Behind the scenes of Intelligent Design | Image: Millie Travers

New Committee for Junior Wombats in 2022 Warragamba Wombats JRLFC have announced a new committee for 2022. Noel Finianos is the newly elected President, taking over from Jayne Parsons. Joining Noel will be Allison McMurray (Secretary), Angela Finianos (Treasurer), Luisa Franco (Registrar), Brad McMurray (Senior Vice President), Steve Drury (Junior Vice President) and Ben Murphy (7th Member). The popular sporting club already has plans to grow next season. “We would love to see all age groups grow in 2022. This includes the Girls League Tag. This year, we had an Under 16 side and they did fantastic. Increasing enrolments in the younger age teams should create ongoing loyalty too” explained Allison McMurray, Secretary of Warragamba Wombats JRLFC. With the lockdown restrictions now eased, the new management team remain positive for the road ahead. “We are looking forward to next season, making memories and friendships with the club and families by making it more family-friendly and community safe. We will be putting together a survey for the community to complete and this will help us gauge more of what they want. We will also be working hard to get NRL players involved in meeting and talking to the children and showing them some of their tricks” she stated. The club will be looking for new sponsors for players training and safety gear as well. Australian Army Cadets Now Recruiting
Are you aged 13 to 18 years? Have you ever wanted to join the Australian Army Cadets? The Australian Army Cadet Unit Wollondilly are currently recruiting and looking for new cadets to join them. 237 Australian Army Cadet Unit Wollondilly meet at the Mount Victoria Nursing Home at 615 Thirlmere Way, Picton each week. They parade on a Monday night from 6:00pm to 9:00pm during school terms. They have countless opportunities for weekend involvement and school holiday programs with camps and community activities. “In order to join cadets, the individual needs to be between the ages of 13 and 18. Anyone can join cadets! We are an organisation that focuses on the growth and skill development of all youth. We are ready to invite all keen and enthusiastic youth, who are looking for adventure and great learning and leadership opportunities. “Australian Army Cadets aim to be inclusive of all young people and Officers and Instructors of Cadets, including those with special needs and health conditions. All reasonable steps will be taken to include any person whose individual circumstances may necessitate special consideration in Cadet Unit activities” said Private Kirslyn Conlon of 237 Australian Army Cadet Unit Wollondilly. Some of the activities that the Australian Army Cadets participate in include drill and ceremonial parades, abseiling, watermanship, use of service firearms (under direct supervision), navigation, living in the field, leadership, and management, first aid and survival training. They also have a strong community involvement in our local council area, and love to get involved in helping our community at several events. “As a cadet, you learn to be confident, self-sufficient and willing to ‘have a go’. It’s your opportunity to discover new challenges and have some unbelievable fun. You also learn to lead others and work as a member of a team. You are able to do things for yourself and help your friends learn too” Private Conlon replied. Fernhill to Flourish Under New Plan
Western Sydney’s Fernhill Estate will be open for bushwalking and picknicking from next year, under a five-year plan to progressively transform the historic 423-hectare estate into a public parkland. Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the Fernhill Estate Foundation Plan of Management to 2026 set a path for how the estate would open up. “The NSW Government purchased Fernhill Estate in 2018 with a vision to transform this historic home into a parkland for people, and the five-year plan of management sets out how we will get on with this important job,” Mr Stokes said. “Fernhill Estate is a green jewel in Sydney’s crown. Over the next five years it will open up for bushwalking, bike riding, picnicking and events.” Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said Fernhill Estate would be an iconic western Sydney parkland. “Fernhill is such a special place that has been closed to the public for over a century. Now it will become Western Sydney’s answer to Centennial Park as one of NSW great public parks,” Mr Ayres said. “As Western Sydney grows, Fernhill will provide locals with a new open space and be a drawcard for tourists from all over.” Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the launch of the Fernhill Estate five-year plan of management was a milestone for the Mulgoa community. “The plan sets out how the Estate will open up in a way that manages and preserves its significant heritage and biodiversity,” Ms Davies said. “As one of Sydney’s oldest surviving estates, its preservation is important so generations to come can experience its rich history.” The Estate recently re-opened for self-guided walking tours on Sundays, which will give people a glimpse of the grounds and a taste of what’s to come over the next few years. 30 Years Behind the Camera
Mulgoa local Di Watson has achieved an amazing milestone behind the camera, celebrating 30 years as a wedding and portrait photographer. Di’s journey began in 1991, when she photographed her first wedding officially as Di Watson Photography. “The best thing about being a wedding photographer is being able to meet and connect with lovely people. Capturing images that showcase their unique love story, the moments, family and friends and creating memories for them to cherish forever is priceless,” said Di. She has seen many changes in the photography industry in the past three decades. “Changing from film to digital was a challenge that took me a long time to adjust to. After converting in 2004 - 2006 to a digital camera, it was a massive learning curve. I now truly love the feeling of being able to see what you capture as soon as you capture the moment” she reminisced. As well as being a photographer, Di has also been a veterinary nurse/receptionist at Penrith Vet Hospital for 36 years. Adding to her talent, she started Farmstay Australia, a website directory in 2011. Farmstay Australia promotes tourism to rural and outback Australia for farmers opening their doors to travellers for accommodation and camping. In September 2013 whilst visiting a station in Mount Isa in North Queensland, she saw firsthand farmers that were suffering from the terrible drought. Di decided after her visit to the station that something had to be done to help the farmers doing it tough. She managed to raise $7,000 over a month from generous people on her Farmstay Australia Facebook page to help. The idea of a Calendar was started in late November 2014 to help raise money for farmers. Now in its 8th year, the Calendar profits have been donated to help give a “Hand Up in Tough Times” via Need for Feed Australia. Di spends as much time as she can, between wedding and portrait shoots, travelling rural Australia with her caravan and Labradors. “I love that I have the diversity and time of capturing weddings, portraits, pet photography and landscape photography and how my two businesses work for me side by side, as well as being a vet nurse” she ended. Di’s Calendars are available at Mulgoa News and Post and online for $30 each. They can be purchased online at https://farmstaycampingaustralia.com.au/.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington It’s great to see things opening and getting back to normal after our COVID-19 lockdowns, including functions and events now back on in Luddenham. The other good news is that work on the Northern Road is coming to an end, with a minimum of four lanes now between Penrith and Narellan. Work started on the upgrade on the 8th of December 2015 at Narellan. The big news is that Luddenham residents have one last chance to decide our future. NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment have released the Luddenham Village Discussion Paper, giving residents four scenarios to choose an option they would prefer. Targeted design workshops with community groups, landowners and government stakeholders were held to understand issues, the vision, and aspirations for the area. Feedback on the Luddenham Village Discussion Paper will inform the Luddenham Village Plan and that will be finalised with the Precinct Plans in December. They are asking you to provide feedback until 5 November 2021 via email to engagement@ppo.nsw.gov.au. In my opinion, I favour scenario four. I believe it is the only way that Luddenham will survive. They even admit that Luddenham will struggle with the first two scenarios as the Luddenham Village population would decrease. We have also seen changes to the amount of green space in the Aerotropolis. Several documents relating to planning for the Western Sydney Aerotropolis are now on exhibition at www.planning.nsw.gov.au/Plans-for-your-area/Priority-Growth-Areasand-Precincts/Western-Sydney-Aerotropolis. r The Four Scenario’s for Luddenham | Image Supplied

Council’s Strong Opposition to Warragamba Dam Wall Raising Wollondilly Shire Council has unanimously voted to reassert its strong opposition to the raising of the Warragamba Dam Wall at an extraordinary meeting recently, condemning the inadequacies of the recently released Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Council criticised the EIS’ watering down of environmental protections, insufficient indigenous heritage studies which fail to recognise the need to protect Gundungurra sacred sites, and inadequate consultation with Wollondilly. The 45 days provided for submissions to be submitted was considered completely insufficient for such a major project, particularly given that the EIS took four years to prepare. Mayor Robert Khan said, “This report is several thousand pages long, which doesn’t give residents time to fully review the documentation and prepare strong, considered submissions”. “This is a defining moment for all of us - the Greater Blue Mountains, including parts of Wollondilly, could lose its World Heritage Status if the raising of the dam wall goes ahead”. “We need to protect what is important and prevent the decimation of our indigenous heritage and native species that once destroyed, can never be replaced”. “It is very concerning that only 20% of the impacted area was looked at in the EIS, and the investigation only took 25 days, so we don’t even know the full extent of what will be lost”. “The EIS also shows that Wollondilly residents would be significantly impacted during construction of the proposed wall, particularly with regards to traffic, heavy vehicle and noise impacts right through the Shire”. “In terms of providing flood protection for residents downstream, there are alternative solutions that have not been properly examined or costed”. “The government needs to investigate evacuation routes for residents living in the Penrith and Hawkesbury areas and stop allowing further development in the flood plain”. Given the extensive documentation to be reviewed and the short timeframe to provide a submission, the preparation of a comprehensive and detailed response to the EIS will be a priority task for Council. Wollondilly Council has previously worked with Blue Mountains City Council to advocate on this issue and will now undertake a robust community engagement campaign to inform the community of the major concerns with the EIS and to strongly encourage submissions. Council has also made it clear that it is not supportive of any council owned land, including land within Warragamba Recreation Reserve, being used for any purpose related to the proposed construction of the dam raising. r Warragamba Dam | Image/Article: Wollondilly Shire Council

Keeping Children Safe Online: What are they doing? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we conclude our three-part series on keeping children safe online. According to eSafety research, approximately 15% of children and 24% of teens admitted to behaving in a negative way with a peer online. When we consider children’s developing capacity to manage big emotions and impulses, as well as their growing interpersonal skills, this makes sense. Children need your guidance to develop respectful social behaviour both online and offline. Online communication can be difficult to navigate due to the often-faceless nature of it. It’s important to speak to your children about how this disconnection can make it feel like online actions and words are not as hurtful. However, we know that the adverse consequences on the mental health of someone being bullied online is not just equivalent to being bullied in person, but in some cases can be worse. We must encourage children to behave online just as they would in the real world. Drawing up a Family Technology Agreement is a great way to talk about the values that you share as a family. These agreements outline your expectations around the use of internet-enabled devices. Agreements can cover the amount of time spent online, the way your child is expected to behave online, and what your child will do if they feel worried or upset about something they see online. Navigating the online world successfully requires a certain level of maturity, discernment, knowledge, and skill; it is not simply about reaching a certain age. Therefore parents must play a proactive role in supporting their children’s online behaviour from the first turn using the iPad to their first personal mobile phone, and beyond. For more information and resources on this topic, please visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety. gov.au/parents.

School Lunches Made Easier
Now that lockdown is over and school is back, the morning rush has begun. The struggle of getting the kids out of bed and ready for school is real. Then, of course, there’s the lunches to make! Local Mum Alison Sciberras has started Lunch Box Kidz to help ease this pain. Lunch Box Kidz began in June this year. The small business is a service for busy, caring parents or guardians who want to give their kids the very best lunchbox for every day of the week. “I used to be a Childcare Cook for over 10 years. As a mother, I know the challenges of making lunches on the run every day” said Alison Scibberas, Owner of Lunch Box Kidz. “I wanted to create a service that would help parents. Something that would give kids the opportunity to eat the same healthy food that I eat. Food that is nutritious, well balanced and home-made” she continued. Lunch Box Kidz has a website where lunches can be ordered for delivery. There are three menus, consisting of Standard ($10/ Day), Premium ($13/Day) and Gourmet ($17/Day). Each lunch box contains 4 food items and 1 drink, ideal for recess, lunch, and an afternoon snack. When ordering online, customers can choose lunches for 2 days, 3 days and 1 week. Delivery is available and is free within the Penrith local council area. Delivery fees are additional outside of this area. Cooler bags with gel packs are available to purchase, ensuring that the delivery is contactless. COVID safe practices are in place. Environmentally friendly biodegradable packaging is also used. “With school back up and running, we anticipate the menus to change every term from next year” ended Alison. For more information or to order, visit their website at www. lunchboxkidz.com.au. You can also find them on Facebook and Instagram. r Alison with one of the delivery packs [Inset] Some of the items available | Images: Alison Sciberras

Migraine Auras – What Their Strange Features Tell Us About Migraines? 38% of migraine sufferers experience auras. Not all migraines involve auras, only 20% do. When present, auras last about 30 minutes; a migraine usually follows within 10 minutes. 20% of auras don’t become a migraine. Over 50 aura-symptoms have been described. Visual auras are by far the most frequent, although weakness, dizziness, numbness/tingling, and speech difficulties, are common. Studies show migraines result from damage to local brain cells. This causes altered function of the brain-region involved. If damage is severe enough, we perceive it consciously and aura results. The damaged brain cells also release a host of biochemicals, and if damage is sufficient biochemicals, are released to turn on local pain sensors (nociceptors) which results in us experiencing the pain we know as the migraine headache. So how are brain cells damaged? The brain is the most energy hungry organ in the body. It requires 10 times more oxygen than the rest of the body (Clarke & Sokoloff 1999). The brain is exquisitely sensitive to anything that hampers energy production including lack of oxygen and when brain cells can’t make enough energy, they are easily damaged. In the damaged, some neurons stop working (i.e., stop producing their normal electrical signals). In migraine, the area within which damage happens spreads like a wave across the cortical surface of the brain, involving ever more brain cells. This phenomenon is called a cortical spreading depression (CSD) The type of aura we get depends upon the region in which damage occurs. The area of the brain which controls vision is at the back of the head. It is known as Brodmann’s area 17. The visual cortex has the highest neuronal density of any brain region and the lowest relative density of supporting cells called astrocytes that protect brain cells from CSD. It is the brain region most sensitive to energy deprivation and thus migraine-auras are mostly visual because in most people the brain-cell-damage that initiates a CSD occurs in the vulnerable visual cortex. The simple reason migraine-auras are varied is that symptoms depend upon the brain region in which damage and CSD starts-and on where the damage wave travels to. r Image: www.pexels.com

Funding Boost Local Sports
For
Wollondilly sporting organisations can now apply for grants to help remove barriers to participation, purchase equipment and improve facilities, under the NSW Government’s $4.6 million Local Sport Grants Program. Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith said the funding will provide a welcome lift to local sporting organisations. “I know how important sport is to the community right across Wollondilly, especially as the state emerges from lockdown,” Mr Smith said. “These grants will help local clubs increase participation by addressing barriers, delivering sports development programs and upgrading equipment and facilities.” Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said the grants will help to support the health, social and economic wellbeing of communities. “Sport brings communities together and goes far beyond the physical benefits – it strengthens social networks and can be a vehicle for skills development and job creation,” Mrs Ward said. “As we return to community sport, this funding will support projects of grassroots sporting clubs which are at centre of many local communities.” Successful clubs can receive funding of up to $20,000, with up to $50,000 available for each electorate throughout NSW. Applications are now open and close at 1pm Friday, 19 November 2021. For more information visit: www. sport.nsw.gov.au/local-sport-grantprogram.

Integrated Vaccination Certificate
Residents across Wollondilly will be able to integrate the COVID-19 digital vaccination certificate into their Service NSW app with the program now rolling out State-wide. Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith said with restrictions to further ease as the state approaches 80 per cent double vaccination, the integration of the vaccine certificate with the app will make things easier for the community. “This is an extra digital service to make life easier for local businesses and customers as we open back up. NSW is the first jurisdiction in Australia to roll out an integrated QR code solution for displaying vaccination status State wide,” Mr Smith said. “When someone visits a venue, they’ll be able to show their green check-in tick and vaccination status simultaneously, saving staff and customers time. “While integrating the COVID-19 digital certificate on to the Service NSW app will be optional, it will be by far the easiest and quickest way to prove you’re fully vaccinated.” The State-wide roll out follows a successful regional pilot with clubs, agedcare facilities and taxis in Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Lismore, as well as internal government participants. As the vaccine data sits in the Federal Australian Immunisation Register to integrate the COVID-19 digital certificate into the Service NSW app you will need to: • Ensure your Federal MyGov account is linked to Medicare • Download the Express Plus Medicare app and sign in with your MyGov account details • Select ‘Proof of vaccinations’ and then ‘View history’ • Select ‘Share with check in app’ and then ‘Service NSW’ There were already three ways to demonstrate the vaccine certificate. Customers can use the Express Plus Medicare app or the digital wallet on their phone. Customers without a smartphone can print a vaccination certificate from their Medicare account or contact Services Australia for a paper certificate in order to prove their vaccination status. The Service NSW app will include a number of security measures to help compliance officers and businesses with checking and validating a customer’s vaccination status, including a NSW Waratah logo hologram and rotating QR codes, similar to the Digital Driver Licence. New Dine & Discover Vouchers Coming Soon
Customers in Wollondilly will have more reasons to celebrate catching up with friends and family this summer with two additional Dine & Discover vouchers up for grabs for NSW residents. Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith said the expanded program will support residents across the community and encourage economic activity as part of the government’s economic recovery strategy. “This is about supporting people to get out and have a meal or spend the day discovering their community while supporting businesses,” Mr Smith said. “The additional $250 million investment by the NSW Government will help businesses recover from months of restrictions and encourage people to enjoy what they love most. “We experienced the success of the Dine & Discover program when we reopened last time, which is why we are doubling down efforts with an additional two $25 vouchers - one for Dine and one for Discover venues. “We are backing our businesses and helping hip pockets by expanding the program, in addition to extending existing vouchers until the end of June 2022.” Mr Smith said the vouchers would again be delivered via the ServiceNSW app. “You’ll find them in your ServiceNSW app in time for summer or you can contact ServiceNSW and they can send them to you,” Mr Smith said. “To date, almost 4.8 million people have taken advantage of the voucher program since its launch in March, giving businesses a $430 million boost.” NSW residents aged 18 years and over who are yet to apply will be able to do so until the program ends and will receive all six $25 vouchers. Participating businesses do not need to reapply. Those who want to join the program are encouraged to register, download the scanner app and get ready to redeem. More information will be made available in the coming weeks on the nsw.gov.au website. r Nathaniel Smith MP with Coffee Culture owner Chris Peters in Bowral. (Source: Zoe McInerney)
Wollondilly Council Launches New Online Rates Portal
Property owners in the Wollondilly Shire Council area now have the option to manage and pay their rates online, with the introduction of the newly created Rates Portal. Mayor Robert Khan announced the launch of the portal last month, recognising the many benefits to the Shire’s ratepayers. “It is important that our community members have choices when it comes to how they do business with Council, so I’m pleased to be able to offer this new online service,” he said. “Accessing the Rates Portal is a straightforward process, and I’m sure it will be welcomed by people wanting an easy way to manage their rates without leaving home.” “Wollondilly is leading the way with this new initiative, as one of the first councils in NSW to offer the service,” he said. To access the online service, customers will be asked to create an account before linking their properties. Those who have used Council’s Customer Portal before should log into their usual account and then link their properties. Once logged in, the portal offers a comprehensive service in addition to paying rates; allowing users to view all the properties they own, arrange a direct debit, or request changes to payment arrangements. Rather than just waiting for yearly or quarterly rates notices to arrive in the mail, property owners can have an overview of their rates status and access to old rate notices all year round. Apart from the ease of use, the online Rates Portal is environmentally friendly, providing considerable savings when it comes to paper waste. Mayor Khan said, “The latest instalment notices have been issued and include information and the registration fields required to register and link your rate accounts to your portal. If you have any questions, you can contact our friendly Customer Service staff on 4677 1100.” To try the new rates portal, head to https://www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/ home/features/customer-portal/
Alfresco Restart Package Announced The streets of Wollondilly will come alive post-lockdown, thanks to a raft of initiatives and $66 million in funding that will see alfresco dining, outdoor activations and events return. Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith said the local hospitality industry had borne the brunt of the recent lockdown and the NSW Government was committed to supporting them. “We’re ripping up red tape and getting Government out of the way to let businesses do what they do best,” Mr Smith said. “We want to give our restaurants, bars, cafes and venues the ability to open up more than they have before and welcome more customers to enjoy a bumper summer. “Alfresco dining is not only a great way to dine, it’s a safer way to socialise as we open up. After a long winter, it’s time for the community to enjoy a meal or drink in the sunshine and the NSW Government is committed to helping businesses do that in time for summer.” The Member for Wollondilly said the Government’s Alfresco Restart Package will help businesses get back on their feet after a long winter in lockdown. “After many months in lockdown, the community is ready to enjoy themselves, so we’ve thrown out the rule book with new temporary alfresco measures, while also making last year’s trials permanent,” Mr Smith said. “In addition to the permanent easing of rules for dining on footpaths and public spaces, we’re temporarily allowing outdoor dining on privately-owned bowling greens and carparks, meaning businesses can expand outdoors on almost any piece of land they own to welcome more customers.” The Alfresco Restart initiatives being rolled out from November include: • Streets as Shared Spaces Program, Summer Night Fund Program and Open Streets Program; • Emergency temporary alfresco measures for outdoor dining in parks or on private land with the owner’s consent; • $5,000 grants for hospitality businesses to establish new alfresco settings; and • Permanent outdoor dining as an exempt development for pubs and small bars state-wide This package is part of the NSW Government’s efforts to slash red tape and support businesses and communities to recover from the pandemic.
Illuminate Wollondilly Rescheduled
With NSW just beginning to emerge from its tightest ever Covid-19 lockdown, Illuminate Wollondilly has been rescheduled for May 2022 with the expectation that restrictions for major events will be fully lifted well before the start of the popular arts and cultural festival. Wollondilly Council is hoping for the festival to be a time of celebration and renewal for the community and a way to bring visitors to the area to help boost the local economy. This will be the sixth year for the popular arts and cultural festival, which is known for attracting thousands of visitors to Picton throughout the day and night. The 2022 event will be bigger than ever, running over three days on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May. Mayor Robert Khan said, “We want Illuminate Wollondilly to be a standout event, to help us celebrate with the community and visitors as we move into a time of more freedoms with higher vaccination rates.” “We hope Illuminate Wollondilly will provide a boost for our local businesses, artists and performers who have been doing it tough over the last two years.” “I would like to thank all our partner sponsors for their patience as we reorganise the program, and the staff from Council who are working hard to bring this event together despite the ongoing challenges.” he said. “We will continue to monitor the Public Health Orders and make sure this is a Covid-safe event for everyone who attends.” Illuminate is the only event of its kind in Wollondilly. As well as the spectacular building illuminations, next year’s program is expected to include a long table dinner, a Jazz festival and some headline music acts. Head to Council’s website for updates https://www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/ events-and-community/annual-events/ illuminate/

November is now upon us, and Spring is well and truly in the air! ‘Freedom Day’ has already arrived and catching up with our loved ones is now a reality. Business is slowly returning to normal, with doors now open. It’s the perfect time to get out and support local business. Let’s all welcome them back after a tough few months. Thank you again to our longstanding and loyal advertisers and readers; and to those who have joined us this year. By supporting our advertising businesses, you’re supporting us too! On Thursday 11 November we remember our fallen heroes, and those that have died in the line of duty. We truly wouldn’t have experienced the ‘Freedom’ that we now know, without their courage and sacrifices. Grab yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy your community news. It’s your last chance before the Christmas rush. Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter.
