Local Luddenham First Aid Hero Receives Top Honour St John Ambulance NSW (St John) is proud to announce local Luddenham resident, Lyn Berghofer, has been recognised for dedicating a remarkable 47 years of voluntary service at the organisation’s 2015 Annual Awards. Ms Berghofer received an esteemed Service Medal of the Order at a ceremony held at Sydney University on Saturday 17 October. The achievement follows Ms Berghofer’s admission as a Dame of Grace of the Order of St John in May 2015, a prestigious honour awarded to members who have provided outstanding service. Ms Berghofer joined St John at just 11 years of age. Since then, she has taken on countless roles across multiple NSW divisions, including Superintendent for the Sydney Western Region, where she oversaw the management of almost 150 volunteers. For Ms Berghofer, a rewarding part of her volunteering experience has been providing training and mentoring to young people. She recalls a memorable occasion when, years later, a past student thanked her for failing them twice before they successfully passed a map reading course. ď ˛ Lyn Berghofer receiving her Service Medal. DamFest is over for another year and what an incredible day. The weather gave us a fright early but in the end could not have been better. So many people to thank. St Thomas’ Church Mulgoa The first Anglican Church service in Mulgoa was held in a barn by the Rev Thomas Hassal in 1827. He only came to Mulgoa once a month and was known as the Galloping Parson due the vast area he had to cover on horseback! The Church was eventually built in 1838 and the Church services are held every Sunday with the 8:30am service at St Thomas in Mulgoa, the 10:30am at St Pauls in Warragamba and the Sunday evening Youth service attending Glenmore Park Anglican Church. The pipe organ in St Thomas was built in England in 1865 and replaced the seraphine looked similar to a piano but had reeds operated with foot bellows. The new organ was originally hand pumped and was restored in 1973 and fitted with an electric blower. It is a relatively small organ and was documented by John Stiller during a visit on 10 March 1984. He said “This instrument is an extremely fine example of a J.W. Walker organ, since it has survived in such a remarkably pure state of preservation. The historic value of this organ is enhanced by the presence of original console fittings, such as stop heads, stop labels the keyboard and all the original pipework with the cone-tuning of the open metal pipes retained.” The original mechanical key and stop actions have been preserved as well as the hand-blowing apparatus. You can listen to the organ being played most Sunday morning services, and it will also be played at the Evening of Music and Entertainment on Friday 4th December.
The Riverland Harmony Chorus will be singing some beautiful Christmas songs and there will also be carol singing and some fun entertainment from our local musicians and magician. Remembrance Day Service in Warragamba Many of us stop what we are doing at exactly 11am on November 11 each year to dedicate a minute of silence for those who have died in war. Remembrance Day was originally called Armistice Day and commemorates the end of the hostilities for World War I, the Great War. The signing of the Armistice occurred on November 11, 1918, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. On the First Anniversary of the Armistice, in 1919, one minute’s silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony. After the end of World War II in 1945, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day as an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead. The annual Remembrance Day service in Warragamba is held at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park opposite the Town Hall. The service starts at 10.45am and one minutes silence will follow the playing of the Last Post. Students from Penrith Anglican College will lead the singing of ‘Abide with me’ and the National Anthem. This year there will be the unveiling of 27 plaques on the new ANZAC memorial wall. These plaques are dedicated by local people to their relatives who fought in the First and Second World Wars. Poppies were among the first flowers that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I and the red poppy has been used as a symbol of remembrance. Pastor’s Corner I recently read this story: A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He had a sign which read: “I am blind. Please Help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. When a man came walking by, he took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. Then he took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on the back. He put the sign where it was, so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were going. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way. I wrote: ‘Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.” It is all about our perspective of life, isn’t it? We read about world events, that horrify us; then sometimes they come much closer, far too close. Events like, the shooting of a normal family man, who worked as an accountant, for the police department. That man went to work, just as normal, not knowing that on that very day, he would lose his life. Someone asked me: Why would God allow that to take place? There is no easy answer to that question, except to say, that God is a loving God, who wants the best for each of us; but in doing so, God gave us a free will, to live life as we choose to. The Bible says “Finally all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8-9). They went onto become an ambulance driver in rural Australia – a job where map reading can make the difference between life and death,” Ms Berghofer said. Ms Berghofer continues to be inspired by the commitment and selflessness of St John volunteers. “Our volunteers spend hundreds of hours of training in preparation to go on duty. When they’re out in the field, often they’ll spend between five to 15 minutes treating a person they’re unlikely to ever meet again,” Ms Berghofer said. This year 62 volunteers will receive a Service Medal – a cohort that has collectively provided 1,375 years of service, and dedicated at minimum 81,420 hours of duty. Based on tradition inherited through St John’s proud historical roots that date back 130 years, Service Medals are awarded to volunteers after 12 years of service, and for every five years thereafter. St John Commissioner, Didier Moutia, said to receive a Service Award was a testament to a volunteer’s commitment to gaining a high level of first aid expertise, and their ongoing care for the health and safety of the NSW community. “To be recognised for a proficient year of service with St John

is an outstanding achievement. Annually, volunteers must complete advanced first aid re-accreditation to ensure they are fully trained in the most up-to-date medical techniques, re-certify their CPR skills and complete a minimum of 60 duty hours of service,” Commissioner Moutia said. “St John volunteers continue to donate their time to provide vital health services – whether it be while on duty at exciting high-profile public events such as Sydney’s New Year’s Eve, events hosted by a local or regional communities, emergencies across NSW, or even when going about their day-to-day civilian lives – their work and commitment exemplifies the critical importance of first-aid skills. “Often our volunteers are motivated to join St John as a way of giving back to the community. Throughout their years of service, they may learn leaderships and mentoring skills, travel to support disaster relief efforts interstate or overseas and build life-long friendships,” Commissioner Moutia said. His Excellency General The Honorable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of NSW and Deputy Prior of St John, will officiate the ceremony and present recipients with their awards. “Without St John, many social, community and sporting events would not be able to take place,” Governor Hurley said.

There’s been some exciting news for the local community, with new owners taking over the Mulgoa Post Office. Neha and Hash Patel recently took over ownership, and come from a business
background. Neha previously managing a wholesale business whilst Hash worked for the Commonwealth Bank. “We were looking for a small franchise business in a friendly community. The perfect opportunity came up with a post office/ newsagency hidden in the lower Blue Mountains” said Neha Patel. The new owners have already brought with them some fresh, new changes to the business. “Already we have returned and delivered over 250 old letters and parcels dating back to July last year. Customers with a PO Box have been supplied with a spare set of keys, which they previously didn’t have. We’ve also introduced a new range of gifts and greeting cards” Neha said. The previous post office and newsagency products and services will remain, as well as the friendly service you expect. “The people of Mulgoa have been great and very welcoming. It is one very happy community” concluded Neha. The trading hours for the Mulgoa Post Office are 6:00am to 6:00pm from Monday to Friday and 6:00am to 1:00pm on weekends.

Shopping centres tend to bring out the worst in children and parents. Tired and harried parents. Tired, hungry, and overwhelmed children. It can be a volatile mix involving frustration, yelling, smacking, put-downs, and threats of abandonment. I’ve seen adult temper tantrums of extraordinary magnitude. So, as I go to Westfield on the occasions when I am promoting the work that I do, I go with some trepidation about what I will see, hear, and feel. Well, this time I was most pleasantly surprised. On quite a few occasions I saw children who were very upset, having a moment. And how did the parents respond? They stopped to give their child a hug and a kiss. It was that simple. It was heart-warming. The parents realised that their child wasn’t giving them a hard time, they were having a hard time. I heard Dr Justin Coulson speaking on the radio the other week. He does very good work and has a website called “Happy Families”. He provided an interesting analogy. If your child could not swim and fell into a swimming pool, what would you do? Would you yell at her, and tell her how stupid she is for falling in? No, you would jump into the pool and save her. And then what would you do? You would teach her how to swim. And that act of learning to swim can take quite a long time, involving much patience, practice and repetition - conquering fear, and celebrating achievements. Children’s behaviour is the same. They are not giving YOU a hard time. Kids are little. They are learning how to manage themselves and how to navigate this big, scary, and wonderful world. They need us to help make things better, and to guide them how to manage their emotions and actions. And they need this, from us, over and over and over again. It’s our job to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person in the relationship (Circle of Security) and to teach our kids to go forward with courage and care. And please know this, it is OK for you to ask for and receive help to be the best parent you can be. We are all in this together.

Nine-year-old Nikita Stutchbury, a year four student at Mulgoa Public School, recently received a ‘Save a Life’ Award at the 2015 St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) Annual Awards. The ‘Save a Life Award’ celebrates the knowledge and extraordinary actions of those who have used critical first aid to save or sustain the life of another person. All recipients had been nominated by their peers or a member of the community, and their heroic efforts demonstrate that first aid skills can be the difference between life and death. Nikita was at home enjoying the school holidays with her mum and younger sister, when her mum collapsed. Nikita’s mum had lost her vision and was unable to speak because her lips and tongue had swollen – she was suffering an anaphylactic shock. Nikita took charge, and it was the skills she had learned through the St John’s First Aid in Schools Program that meant she knew what to do. Nikita immediately called an ambulance and laid her mum on the floor until the paramedics arrived. Nikita bravely remained calm the whole time. She even looked after her sister, taking the five-year-old into another room to make sure she didn’t become frightened by what was happening to their mum. The paramedics were able to give Nikita’s mum the required treatment. They said that what Nikita did helped saved her mum’s life.

Carefully wrap a piece of bacon around each sausage, starting at one end and using halved toothpicks to secure at both ends. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook bacon wrapped sausages for 6 mins, turning until bacon is crispy and sausage is cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Remove toothpicks. Preheat a grill on high. Cut hot dog rolls almost all the way through. Place a sausage in each hot dog roll. Top with capsicum, jalapeno pepper and sprinkle with the Mexican cheese. Place under grill for 2-3 mins or until cheese melts. Top with avocado and barbecue sauce.

Don’t Let Your ‘Back Scans’ Define You! One of the most often run examinations for back pain is a radiological scan - an X-ray, CT scan or MRI. All these scans are excellent in certain circumstances and they can add valuable information to a clinical picture. So many people with back pain request or even expect their GP to order a scan and are disappointed or even upset when this doesn’t happen. However as highlighted in a quote from an ABC Four Corners report on Sep 28, 2015, ‘the truth is, many of the scans, tests and procedures ordered by medical practitioners are wasteful, unnecessary and potentially harmful’! So if on occasion your GP denies you a scan for back pain they may actually be doing you & the public purse a favour. I see patients scans & the accompanying reports almost every day. Scans reveal many things, such as vertebrae with fractures, trophic or Modic changes, vertebrae with altered shapes, fused vertebra; many types of bulging discs, loss of disc height, osteophytes (bony outgrowths from vertebrae), stenosed (blocked) spinal canals & nerve exits, facet joint arthritis, etc. There are many causes of back pain, and proper diagnosis is
vital. In some cases what is revealed on a scan is very important and helpful. In the majority of cases (as suggested by experts in the Four Corners report) scans reveal little about the cause of back pain, nor for that matter about likely response to treatment. Still many patients come in having been told, based on scan results, that they’re just getting old and that there is little that can be done about their pain or their state of debility. These folk then simply put up with the pain which is often quite high, even with multiple medications. While not every case of back pain will be fixed with manual therapies and indeed some people may need surgery or other treatments, simple intervention with appropriate muscle elongation therapy can have surprising results. Using specific techniques we remove inflammatory fluids from back tissues & lengthen them so that tissue function normalises. With regular treatment over a few weeks or months depending on the severity of the problem in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long standing cases. Resilience Our lives, experiences, upbringings and families are all different, but it would be fair to say that most of us set out quietly, hoping and secretly expecting to live a happy, successful and healthy life. This life would ideally be topped with some meaning and purpose, with a generous side order of solid and sustaining relationships. But life doesn’t always go to plan or play fair‌. Watch any current affairs show on any given day and you’re bound to see someone who has come out the other side of some bizarre, horrific, near fatal, life challenging event. For those affected, it’s often a life-defining crossroad where everything changes, where they take stock of their lives and question what is truly important and alter their lives accordingly. Author Matthew Johnstone, in his latest book, ‘The Big Little book of Resilience’, writes ‘I feel I’ve had a pretty blessed life but along the way there has been some defining moments. I had a near death experience following a massive asthma attacked; a friend and I were assault; he had his front teeth knocked out and I was chased by a guy with a knife who said he was going
to kill me. I stood a block from the World Trade Centre when it came down. And sporadically throughout my adult life, I have battled and thankfully overcome depression. All these events were horrible, painful and frightening but in many ways they forged the person, the father, husband and friend that I am today. I wouldn’t want to repeat any of the above but I wouldn’t want to change them either, mostly because I can’t. Collectively, they opened my eyes to what I hold dear and value in my life.’ Viktor Frankl , who miraculously survived three years in Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz, wrote in his book ‘Man’s search for Meaning’ that while we may have little control over events in our lives, what we have paramount control over is how we respond to those events. Loyalty is (now) a One-Way Street In the early 70’s I can remember going to the local Bank of NSW (now Westpac) branch with Mum and Dad and my sisters to meet with the Bank Manager for a home loan. We were all dressed up and as we approached the door Dad turned to us kids and warned us sternly to be on our best behaviour, glaring at each of us and poking us menacingly in the chest. Once inside, the Bank Manager greeted us by name, all of us, because that was our Bank and he knew us and we knew him. We went there all the time to bank Dad’s wages or to pay bills or any number of things. The Bank Manager knew that my parents were dedicated, hard working and honourable people and on the basis of their character as much as financial position he gave them a Home Loan. It was an age when the banks would back their clients in good times and bad, and in response earned the loyalty of their clients. For better or worse things have moved on significantly since those days. Most transactions are done over the Internet and there is no personal relationship and as a result the Banks loyalty to their clients has also been lost. Many of us remain loyal to our Bank because that’s what our Parents taught us. Sadly though, our loyalty counts for nothing. In fact Banks are more interested in attracting new customers than looking after existing clients. Recently, APRA issued new lending requirements to banks and increased capital requirements. In response the Banks changed their lending rules in various ways and as I write this Westpac have just announced an increase in Interest Rates for existing customers! Loyalty between Bank and Customer is now a one-way street and unfortunately client loyalty to their Bank is misplaced. With our reasonably priced drinks and super hotdogs, we sold out again by the early afternoon. Our special thanks to the Mulgoa Bakery and Butchery for helping us out with the eats – and the way those hotdoggies went, the public know when they are on to a good bite, hence our sell-out! Everybody is busy down the Shed and we have a bundle of orders for the Mynah Bird Traps – these take quite a while to assemble, so please be a little patient with us to complete your order – the birds will still be there waiting for you, so don’t worry, they will not fly away. The lads have got a thing about wheels at the moment – it is
all to do with the rebuild of our truck, this is coming on slowly but surely. Membership is increasing, so please come down and have a yarn, you do not need to have any special skills. I am Fire – Bushfire Awareness Campaign The Rural Fire Service has a new campaign to raise awareness about when to leave when a bush fire is heading towards you. The message is simple, know your risk and get ready to leave. A devastating bush fire may only be a few flying embers away. You need to be prepared. The campaign “I am Fireâ€? is currently being aired on TV and radio and encourages residents to think seriously about how prepared they are for a bush fire emergency. This is the video message, “I am Fire, I can leap four lane highways, I can send burning power poles crashing down. I can radiate heat so extreme it can shatter windows and melt tyres. So if you’re going to drive to escape me, don’t wait until it’s too late. Fire has a plan, do you? Take simple steps like planning how and when you will leave.â€? There are a series of short video clips at rfs.nsw.au that provides tips for being prepared for a bush fire emergency. These include: • Travel Smart – free apps you can access that keep you informed about impending fire danger • Fire Danger – know the signs • Don’t give fire a chance • Get prepared for bush fire season and make your bush fire survival plan now. “We are proud to be working closely with the Southern Highlands RFS Team again this year to assist our community

Inflatable and Prefabricated Pools Your inflatable pool could be a huge risk to your children if it is not fenced. In the last few years, inflatable and prefabricated DIY pools have become popular alternatives to the cost of a full size pool and many are installed without first consulting Council. These pools pose the same risk to children as larger pools and will require approval if they have the capability to hold more than 2,000 litres. Penalties apply for pools that are installed without approval, where a pool is not registered or where a child-resistant barrier is not installed or maintained. • $550 fine if pool is not fenced • $220 fine if it is not registered • $1500 if there is no development consent If members of the public have concerns with the suitability of their pool safety provisions, Council provides a service where pool fencing and isolation barriers can be checked for compliance by authorised officers for a nominal fee.
