Long Table Dinner Will Be Part Of Illuminate 2022 Celebrations As part of the highly anticipated return of the Illuminate Wollondilly Festival of Art & Light this May, residents and visitors are invited to enjoy a long table dinner in the Picton Botanic Gardens. The Gardens will come to life with lights and a spectacular illuminated sculpture and lantern display on Friday 20 May, with the long table dinner taking centre stage under the Avenue of Trees. Wollondilly Council Calls On Minister Roberts To Fix New Airport Planning Mess So Residents Can Build Homes Rules banning secondary dwellings introduced by the NSW Department of Planning in some of Wollondilly’s northern villages due to the new Western Sydney airport operations are unfortunately causing heartache and financial pain for some residents. The changes were brought in suddenly in late 2020 by the Department without any meaningful community consultation, and Council is required to follow them despite its objections to some parts of them. Mayor Matt Gould said, “Council is advocating strongly for these residents and calling on the Minister for Planning, Anthony Roberts, to change these unfair

rules, or at least provide a transition period so those with secondary dwelling applications already in the pipeline can have them considered under the previous planning rules.” “We are seeking an outcome that will provide relief to residents who have heartbreakingly been caught up in these changes to the rules.” “We are doing everything we can to support residents unfortunately impacted by this NSW Government decision, with a hope that the Minister for Planning intervenes urgently,” he said. r

Applications Open For Apprentice Scholarships Local first year apprentices facing financial or personal hardship will be supported with a $15,000 scholarship to undertake their trade and study through a NSW Government scholarship program. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said people can now apply for a Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship which will support 120 people to either start, change, or further their career. “This scholarship program offers a great incentive for eligible locals to kick-start their career,” Mrs Davies said. “Whether you need to purchase new tools, cover fuel or car maintenance, or pay for additional study, these scholarships have helped people overcome personal barriers to finish their apprenticeships and follow their trade calling.” The NSW Government will invest $1.8 million in the program, which provides $5,000 over three years to support apprentices who demonstrate a high aptitude for vocational education and training and are committed to their on the job and formal training. Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens said there were more than 107,000 people in-training across NSW, a 29 per cent increase on the year before. “Apprenticeships are a critical part of ensuring NSW has a pipeline of skilled workers, but we also understand the financial limitations and challenges that arise for apprentices while completing their trade,” Mr Henskens said. “As NSW has seen through bushfires, floods and the pandemic, apprentices remain a vital part of the economy and make a strong contribution to local businesses and communities.” “The Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships are in addition to the 100,000 fee-free apprenticeships and 70,000 fee-free traineeships and other low-fee courses funded by the NSW Government.” The scholarship program is named in honour of the late Bert Evans AO,

Seniors Card Now Digital Seniors living in Wollondilly can now access their Seniors and Seniors Savers Card digitally via the Service NSW app for the first time since its introduction in 1992. Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith, said the Seniors and Seniors Saver Cards have been incredibly important for easing the cost of living in NSW for 30 years. “Now, for the first time, Seniors will be able to access the card via the Service NSW app, meaning there is one less thing for them to carry around with them,” Mr Smith said. “This will make life easier for our seniors today and our seniors tomorrow, who are growing more accustomed to using technology rather than using physical cards. “Seniors have already embraced the Service NSW app through programs like Dine & Discover NSW and the Digital Driver Licence, and this digital option provides them with greater choice and flexibility,” Mr Smith said. “The rollout follows a successful pilot with 4,000 participants, with the vast majority giving it the thumbs up. Mr Smith said the program has been providing savings since its inception in 1992, including on gas and electricity. “We have brought this service, which has been beneficial for easing the cost of living for seniors, into the twenty-first century,” Mr Smith said. “When this initiative was first introduced by the then Premier of NSW, John Fahey, 250,000 seniors had access to discounts and rebates from 320 goods and service providers. “Now, it is one of the largest programs of its kind in Australia, with 1.8 million seniors able to access discounts and rebates at more than 6,500 shops, travel, entertainment and professional services.” The digital cards will be opt-in only and customers will continue to receive a physical card. Launching a Church When you launch a ship, it’s customary to throw a bottle of champagne against the bow. Hopefully the bottle breaks and everyone cheers. If the bottle doesn’t break it’s believed to be bad luck! When you launch a rocket, there is a countdown, a deep rumble and, if all goes well, the rocket slowly breaks the pull of gravity and shoots up into space. These days you can even have the rockets return safely to the ground (well two out of three times anyway). What happens when you launch a church? Pastor’s Corner

The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day. A special time of celebrating and remembering the contribution that your mother made to your life. Mothers are a unique breed - able to love us when we are unlovely, able to support us even when we have disregarded their advice, there for us when we have fallen and need to be picked up and true multi-taskers. If your mother is alive, take time to celebrate her life with her; those happy memories and those times that are more challenging. My own Mum would have been close to 99 years of age on Mother’s Day this year, but sadly she passed away at the age of 49 years, which is far too young. On Mother’s Day in particular, I think of her and her contribution to my life. My Mum taught me to feel loved, to be safe and secure and to have the courage of my convictions. But also, to consider the needs of others. Each of my three daughters are mothers, similar in some ways to their mother. My beautiful wife (now grandmother to nine), each daughter brings their own individuality to mothering. A few years back, I shared with each of my three daughters, none of whom were alive when my Mum passed, what she had in common with them, and what she would have enjoyed sharing with them. It is part of her legacy to each of them. For some, your mother is much older, and she needs to be loved and cared for. When Jesus was on the Cross dying, his mother Mary was present, no longer a young woman, but needing to be cared for. John19:26 records ‘When Jesus saw his mother there and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother. “Dear woman here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, the disciple took her into his home. Whilst all of us had mothers, not all women become mothers. To women in general, both young and old, Happy Mother’s Day, from grateful sons and daughters. May God bless you, in more ways than you could imagine! Happy Mother’s Day!

99 Amazing Years for Colin

Local resident and Founding Member of Warradale Men’s Shed, Colin Herbert recently celebrated his 99th birthday. Colin, who was born on 28th March 1923, received many well wishes through phone, SMS messages and social media for his milestone birthday. The Warradale Men’s Shed organised a special party for Colin, complete with cake and balloons. A family get together was later postponed, due to family members contracting COVID. He was born in Lewisham in Sydney and had two brothers and five sisters. Two of his sisters are still alive and living in Queensland. His family lived in Lewisham until he was five, before they moved to Bankstown. Colin was married to Freda on 14th January 1950. Together they had three children, one boy (Leslie Charles) and two girls (Dianne and Robyn). Freda sadly passed away on 14th March 2017. They have three grandchildren – Andrew, Christopher, and Jodie and six great grandchildren – Thomas, Alexandra, Jessica, Mia, Sam, and Catherine. He was in the Military for six and a half years. Colin started in the 123rd Motor Transport as a Driver. He was serving in Darwin during the bombing. When he was able to return to Sydney, he transferred to the 1st Battalion Paratroop. After that, he was then in the Japanese Occupational Forces. Colin was a Corporal throughout his service. Upon leaving the service, Colin started out as a Wood Machinist, where he created and demonstrated the cabriole leg for furniture. Then, Building Construction General which came under the school of architecture. He followed this up with being a Building Supervisor. Colin also built houses in Moree for Indigenous Australians. Since retiring, he has been involved in woodturning and is a Life Member of two woodturning groups. Colin built the house that he lives in today. “He is able to keep going because of his own stubbornness, where he will push himself to do things to go beyond his limit. He says that there is no reason to do anything unless you do it well” said Dianne Harris, Colin’s daughter. Despite his years, Colin still leads an active life. He goes to hydrotherapy twice a week and physiotherapy once a week. He attends the Warradale Men’s Shed every Friday and tries to get to woodturning on Saturdays, when possible. Colin receives excellent support from the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), friends and family – especially his daughters who look after him. His friend Jim takes him to the Bankstown RSL for meetings and events. Local Completes 300km Walk Matthew Reid of Silverdale has completed the Walk for Terry Fox, a phenomenal walk from Glenmore Park to Kingston in the ACT, covering over 300 kilometres in just 10 days. Matthew set out from Glenmore Park High School on 28th March, before heading south. Ten days later on 6th April, he finished at the Caribou Kingston and averaged 30kms a day of walking. Along the way, he visited five schools consisting of Luddenham Public School, Bringelly Public School, Buxton Public School, Bradfordville Public School, and Collector Public School. Whilst at the schools, he spoke to the students about Terry Fox and his legacy. Terry Fox was a young Canadian who, despite having an artificial leg, participated in the Marathon of Hope, across Canada run to raise money for cancer research and awareness. He would run for 143 days over a distance of 5,373kms. Reid was joined by 20 people for the last 3.5kms of his trek to Canberra. Once arriving at the Caribou Kingston, he was surprised with a group of 60-70, including Isabelle Martin, the Acting High Commissioner of Canada, congratulating him on his fundraising walk. After being interviewed by WIN NEWS Canberra, Matthew enjoyed a celebratory lunch with ex-pat Canadians and Aussies. His goal was to raise $40,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He’s currently over $30,000 and is still taking donations. “I put my body on the line. It’s all about the bigger picture and the work that Terry Fox did over 143 days. A message of resilience, hope and never giving up,” said Matthew. Talking to the many school children was a highlight of the walk. Travelling through Lake George and then being greeted at the finish were experiences he will never forget. “Thank you to everyone that has donated or contributed in one way or another. Your support has been greatly appreciated” he ended. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington The long-awaited toilet block for the Progress Hall is about to be installed. This project has been held up with COVID, Council delays and wet weather. This new amenity block will be a great asset for the hall, being added to the back of the hall and direct access thru the back door. On the 28th of March, the Prime Minister was in Luddenham to announce work was officially getting underway to build the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport runway. WSI’s runway will handle the full range of commercial aircraft, including the new generation of ultra-long-haul airliners like the A350-1000 and Boeing 777X. “Western Sydney International will continue operating safely in foggy conditions that currently shut down Sydney’s skies,” Mr Hickey said. “Our airfield will be future-ready, designed for expansion with consideration for emerging technologies such as electric aircraft”. Western Sydney International is on track to open to international, domestic and air cargo services in late 2026. The Aerotropolis Planning Package for the initial precincts was finalised on 25 March. Unfortunately, due to the WSA Co objection to Luddenham Village, the final plan for Luddenham has not been released. NSW Planning have been doing community engagement, as they wait for the WSA Co to withdraw their objection on Luddenham Village. Statement by Luddenham Progress Association - “The Luddenham Progress Association is demanding that All Government Departments and Agencies stop all work and plans on Bradfield. Bradfield’s future needs to be put on hold immediately, until the flightpaths are released. Bradfield is the planned new core city in the Aerotropolis with a proposal to have an extra 8,000 dwellings as well as a mix of business, commercial, retail and a metro station. This has been given the green light by the three levels of Government. On the other hand, NSW Planning issues a scenario and recommendations for up to 1,200 dwellings to the North of the existing Luddenham Village and this has been placed on hold because of one letter of objection from WSA Co (that is owned by the Federal Government). Luddenham residents have been told that they must wait for the airport flightpaths before a decision on Luddenham Village can be made. Meanwhile, Bradfield like Luddenham, is located parallel to the runway, not under flight paths, same distance from the airport, same noise and are both outside the airport noise contours. WSA Co were asked why they did not object to Bradfield, and they said, “We were not asked to”. The Government owns land in Bradfield, and it is not fair, as it looks like one rule for the haves and another for the have-nots. Either Luddenham is approved now, or Bradfield is put on hold”. This statement was sent to members of Parliament. The #saveluddenham campaign continues with banners and corflute signs going up around town. Good news, with the Luddenham Pie Shop now reopened Tuesday to Sunday from 6am to 4pm. r

Ready and Rockin’

Live music is back and The Jestas are ready to rock! The popular local band, consisting of Jesse Gerhard (lead guitar/vocals), Rafaela Safadi (bass guitar/vocals) and Ben Wilson (rhythm guitar) have recently been joined by their new drummer, Eddie Green. “They have already played some shows to great acclaim and are super excited to be getting back out there and being musicians again” explained Rachel Byrne, band representative of The Jestas. Forming at a local high school whilst studying music together, the band made the most of performing during the pandemic. This included changing their act as an acoustic band temporarily. “It was a pretty tough time we imagine for a lot of bands, but we made sure we kept moving during that period. We changed our act to acoustic. This allowed us to get away with some live gigs here and there, since it’s a little more of a laid-back performance. That and any song writing we could squeeze in, we did” said The Jestas. With guitars plugged back into their amps, they have been busy performing locally. This included recent performances at Full Bull Clothing’s Triple B Event at the Wallacia Hotel on 2nd April and 16th April and Warragamba Workers Club on 25th April. They hope to also record some new songs in the not-too-distant future. “We do have new songs written by us that we’ll be playing at our shows. We believe that once we get a bigger following from these shows, then we’ll aim towards recording some of our original material” The Jestas replied. “Now that we have an act ready to go, we just want to get out there, play as many places as we can and take as many opportunities as possible. Most people don’t realise that there are 2 forms Of Vitamin K with different Functions There are two forms of Vitamin K, Vitamin-K1 and K2. Vitamin-K1 is high in green leafy vegetables and other foods such as kiwifruits and dried prunes. Vitamin-K2 comes from fermented foods. The two forms clearly have different roles in the body. Vitamin-K1 is vital for both producing blood clots to stop blood loss. It also stops inappropriate blood clotting. For example, unwanted clots in blood could lodge in the leg veins, lung, or heart arteries, causing DVT, pulmonary embolism or heart attack respectively. Though Vitamin-K2 is synthesized from Vitamin-K1 in brain, liver, and pancreas; food scientists have recommended a separate RDI from Vitamin-K1. Vitamin-K2 helps improve outcomes for osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. For 1,000 years (30 generations), natto, the world’s richest Vitamin-K2 source, has been eaten in Northern Japanese cuisine, without any adverse side-effects. Natto is one reason for Japanese people having lower fracture risks and better bone density/ strength than other countries. Within Japan, the higher the natto consumption the lower the age-related bone loss. Supplemented Vitamin-K2 is also very safe. In Japan, doctors regularly prescribe 45 mg/day (15 mg MK-4 three times a day) of Vitamin-K2 to osteoporotic women. Worldwide, Vitamin-K2 trials have used doses as low as 10 μg, up to 45 mg/day for several years with no adverse side effects. Even doses of 135 mg/day had no adverse side effects.

Recently, Japanese postmenopausal women given just 350 μg/ week of MK-7 showed significantly reduced osteoporotic fracture risk. Vitamin-K2 deficiency is established in haemodialysis patients and implicated as the link between high rate of vascular calcification, bone mineral density loss, and fracture rate of these patients. Vitamin-K2 supplementation studies also suggests potential benefit for cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and for patients with chronic kidney disease. From a clinical nutrition perspective, it’s generally more beneficial to eat foods rich in Vitamin-K1 or K2 rather than supplement. Why? Foods allow a person to cover multiple bases. For example, bone loss rate is dependent on Vitamin-K2 intake, and protein intake (amongst many other factors). When a person eats natto, they’ll get excellent, highly bio-available levels of protein, Vitamin-K2, together with many other bone-healthy factors, in the one food.

Let the Kids Play: The Value of Play for Children’s Development “Play is the work of the child,” according to physician and educator Maria Montessori. As our understanding of child development deepens, the value of play has only become more apparent. ‘Free play’ describes play that is unplanned, spontaneous, and led by the child’s curiosity, interest, or imagination. For example, a child starts to draw and decides to create their own board game on the page or to create their own map of the house. Free play is crucial for optimal physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Physical play involves moving the body and can look like kicking a ball around the yard or learning a new dance. This helps to build children’s muscles and bones. Constructive play is all about creating something, examples include building a block tower, painting a picture, and playing a song on a musical instrument. This supports children’s capacity to solve problems, connect new ideas and follow their curiosity. Social play happens when your child plays with other children. This gives children opportunities to develop important social skills such as cooperation, communication, and language. Fantasy play is when children use their imagination to create worlds and characters, for example playing dress up or pretending to be a mum and baby. These activities support social and cognitive skills. At Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services, we offer free supported playgroups. Supported playgroups provide a fun and safe place for children to explore and engage with developmentally enriching activities such as sing-a-longs, story time, arts, craft, and free play. Playgroups are a great place to connect with other families in your area. Koala Tree Planting Day at Luddenham Public School

Koala Retreat were recently invited to organise a Koala Tree Planting Day at Luddenham Public School. Koala Retreat staff, teachers and students had a lot of fun when the tree planting day finally came around. The famous ‘Koala Chief’ and the ‘Koala Man’ put on their ‘Koala Show’ in which they explained to the students why trees are so important. Theory was then swiftly put into action, with enthusiastic students planting 42 trees on the school grounds. It seemed the students didn’t even realise how hard they were all working, because they were so focussed on the tasks at hand. It was a very positive and enjoyable experience. Koala Retreat founder Marcus Zorich also brought along some copies of his new educational children’s book “Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas”. The book forms part of the process of educating students and others about koala behaviour, in the wild and in zoos. “Presenting the tree day to the Luddenham Public School students and writing the book “Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas” is our way of taking a holistic approach to koala conservation, with education being a key,” said Marcus Zorich of Koala Retreat. “Hopefully, the students came away with a greater appreciation of the importance of protecting and planting trees, for the benefit of koalas, but also us humans” he ended. r Marcus planting a tree with students watching | Image: Luddenham Public School

Council Issues Planning Approval for $20 million Shopping Centre in Silverdale Wollondilly residents can now look forward to a new village centre and commercial hub in the northern end of the Shire, with DA consent issued for a new $20m shopping centre in Silverdale. This is an important stepping stone for the expansion of the Silverdale village centre; the culmination of a complex planning process which involved extensive collaboration between Council staff and the proponent’s design team. The land was rezoned in recent years following Council’s decision to set a new strategic direction for the town and expand the commercial footprint. CEO Ben Taylor said, “This is the next step in realising the vision Council has for the town of Silverdale, and we expect the expanded centre to become a focal point for this growing community”. “It will give residents a wider range of options in the local area, reduce travel time and create space for much needed services”. “Council will continue to work with the developer as they progress their project and we look forward to seeing a supermarket, speciality stores, alfresco eating areas and underground parking all become a reality”. The project will capitalise on the current and ongoing road safety upgrades to Silverdale Road, with Council’s road designers working closely with the proponent’s design team to minimise duplication of reconstruction of the road and make the most of government grants. A Wonderful Night at the Drive-In As a thank you to our clients, families, and friends, we recently invited them to join us to see the movie Clifford The Big Red Dog. We hired out an entire cinema at Skyline Drive-In Blacktown on Saturday 2nd April 2022. The night’s celebrations were a triple thank you to everyone for: 1. 12th Year Anniversary of owning the business of Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 2. Looking to play table tennis locally? Wollondilly Table Tennis Association, who recently formed, offer weekly games for all ages. Launching on 19th February this year at Thirlmere, Paul Pinkewich, 13 times Australian Table Tennis Champion was on hand giving demonstrations and speaking about the benefits of table tennis. Wollondilly Table Tennis Association’s regular program during school terms includes: • Open session (all ages), Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30pm to 9:30pm • Seniors, Fridays, 1:00pm to 3:00pm • Kids (grades 5-12), Fridays, 3:00pm to 6:00pm The cost is $10 per 2-3 hour session or $15 for more than one family member. Alternatively, it is $80 per school term or $120 for more than one family member. Active Kids vouchers can be used for term fees for kids. All equipment is provided. The venue is 79 Westbourne Avenue in Thirlmere (Church Hall). “We welcome beginners. People who haven’t played for a long time also find that it comes back to them very quickly” said Ken Harkness of Wollondilly Table Tennis Association to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “Table tennis is a satisfying game to play well because you experience your reflexes in a way you don’t expect” he continued. Ken has taught table tennis for five years previously and is happy to see the sport now being offered to the local community. They plan to be involved in the NSW Country Competition, which is being held on the 28th and 29th May. It’s never too late to take up dancing as an adult! Invogue Dance Studios now offer Adult Dance Classes right here in Luddenham. The popular dance classes are held each week on Tuesday evenings from 8:15pm to 9:15pm at Luddenham Progress Hall during school terms, and cost $10 a class. They include light weights to start with. Songs like Nutbush and Macarena will warm you up. Creative cardio helps with building the strength of your heart. It incorporates old school games with a modern twist. Pom pom dancing assists movement to increase circulation. Finally, pilates, yoga and meditation allow for light stretches and cooling down. Group members say that this is their favourite part. Term three will be introducing barre elements, which is an exciting addition. With an age range of 18 to 75, adult dance classes bring people together from all walks of life. It’s a great way to make some new friends and to do something for you. During each term, there have been different themes to dance to. Themes like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Kylie Minogue allow the members to dance to their favourite songs, dress up and let their hair down. “We make sure that the classes are fun and inclusive. It’s a fantastic way for adults to stay active. With lockdown now over and little to no Zooms, it’s the perfect opportunity to get out there” smiled Lisa Leibrandt of Invogue Dance Studios. “And of course, there’s the music! Lots of classic tunes you will remember” she added. Lisa also has plans for her 18 to 25 age group dance members, who are highly sought after at parties and celebrations.
