It’s almost that special time once again when Santa leaves the North Pole to join up with Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) for their Annual Santa Run. This year’s Wallacia RFB Santa Run will take place on Friday 24th December (Christmas Eve). Santa Claus will swap his sleigh for a fire truck, as he visits the local community with members of the Wallacia RFB there to support him. Santa will start his trip at 3:00pm on Christmas Eve in William Street, before making his way around the streets of Wallacia to greet all the boys and girls and handout lolly bags to all those that have been good. It’s also an opportunity to pass on your wish list and even grab a photo with the man in the big red suit. You will be able to follow Santa to see where he is as he travels around Wallacia on the local brigade’s Facebook page. Don’t forget to greet him, before he begins his long trek around that world later that night. “After a very challenging year with COVID and the lockdowns, all of the members of Wallacia RFB are really looking forward to helping Santa and seeing our local community out and enjoying Christmas” smiled Captain Jody Preston of Wallacia RFB. Of course, we need food and shelter, but as human beings’ relationships are at the heart of our existence. Relationships bring us purpose, identity and meaning in life. Christmas is a time for relationships. A time for families to get together and share food and have fun experiences. For the first time in two years, it seems we are going to have a normal Christmas! After so much disruption to our lives, it is going to be good to see family and friends and spend time together doing things the way we used to. God didn’t just make us for relationships with each other, he also made us for relationships with him. God may feel distant, but he has come close to us in Jesus Christ. I suppose it is right that God feels distant because we have lived lives that don’t deserve relationship with him. However, Jesus comes as our Saviour to bring us back to God. When Jesus was born, the angels declared “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12). My prayer is that this Christmas will bring you great joy as you invest in relationships, particularly with God. That is exactly how he made each one of us.

Pastor’s Corner As we draw closer to the end of the year, take a deep breath. I trust that you have survived the ravages of the pandemic. Now Christmas and the New Year celebrations are in front of us. For some, Christmas is a time of loneliness, our family and friends may be overseas or elsewhere. Perhaps too we grieve the loss of loved ones who have passed away; their absence still is painful. Then there are those important relationships that have broken down. You were hurt, so you never see or speak to each other. Where possible, Christmas is a great time to restore relationships. The story of the first Christmas may be familiar to you. It is a story that tells of a young couple Joseph and Mary. A census has been called and they travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Mary is pregnant and the birth is imminent. Like many parents at such a time, they are anxious. Bethlehem is busy and there is no room at the inn for them to stay, so a stable will be the birthplace for this child. A baby boy is born, and he is to be called Jesus. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) You may have decided to leave the story of that first Christmas with the image of the baby Jesus, but the story does not finish there in that stable. It really is only the beginning. This boy named Jesus is God’s Son. God’s love has come down to us and it is for a purpose. Jesus came to provide us with an escape from God’s judgement, to stand in our place for our sins, to bring forgiveness for what we have done wrong (big things like murder, little things like not telling the complete truth or not loving others and ignoring God’s ways). Jesus died on the Cross for each of us, he took our place. As you celebrate Christmas this year, may I encourage to know Jesus personally and to include him in your celebrations. Share generously what you have with others and learn to forgive those that have hurt you.

Keeping our Village Clean They say that alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. That is certainly the case for the Rotary Club of WallaciaMulgoa Valley who came together recently to clean up part of the community. The local initiative saw the group clean up a part of Greendale Road, a few kilometres out of Wallacia. “At one of our monthly meetings, we discussed various options in which we could do something for our community. It was eventually decided that cleaning up the rubbish on the side of the road going out of the village was something that would benefit the community” said Jan Bradley of the Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley. The members who rolled up their sleeves to help participate in the initiative were Roger French, Sue Corcoran, Michael Rosano and Jan Bradley. In a few short hours, they covered a 1km stretch of road, completely filling the back of the vehicle they were using. “We intend to do another clean up before Christmas” explained Jan to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The inspiring group also support the community by making $200 individual donations to each of the five local schools every year, to purchase books for their end of year presentations. “We are always looking for ways to support our community and are ready to listen to anyone who comes to us for help. We also invite anyone who would be interested in joining one of our Zoom meetings every Wednesday night from 7:00pm to 8:30pm” she said. Recycle your Christmas tree!

We’re accepting items such as wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and other household recyclables.

We’re collecting real Christmas trees for free on Saturday 8 January 2022. Bring your real tree to Jamison Park between 10am and 2pm and we’ll make sure it’s sent to the right place to be turned into mulch to be reused. Please remove all decorations prior to attending the drop-off. Artificial trees will not be accepted. These can be disposed of as part of a bulky waste collection booked online at The Waste Spot, or by placing them in your red-lidded residual bin.

Polystyrene will not be accepted at the drop-off. Clean, white polystyrene can be dropped off for free at Penrith Community Recycling Centre.

Celebrate the Festive Season at Wollondilly’s Christmas in the Gardens

Wollondilly Shire Council’s Christmas in the Gardens is back for a third time in 2021; featuring the popular twilight markets, an outdoor movie, a visit from Santa and a range of other family activities. The event will be held on Friday 10 December in the Picton Botanic Gardens, kicking off at 3:00pm with food and market stalls, face painting and Christmas Carols. Santa will be arriving for photos at 5:00pm, with instant prints available for an affordable rate of $5. The winners of the annual Wollondilly Christmas Lights Competition will be announced at 7.30pm at a special presentation. The free outdoor movie, SPACE JAM: A New Legacy will screen from 8:30pm. Under current COVID-19 restrictions, bookings will be required for the movie, with tickets available soon through Council’s website and Facebook pages. Get your Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings The Lions Club of Emu Plains are selling Lions Christmas cakes and puddings again this festive season and will be at the Lennox Village on successive Saturdays on the 4th and 11th December. A raffle will also be held across these days, with the lucky draw of a meat tray from Clean Cut Family Meat Butchers, drawn each week. The 1kg cakes and 0.9kg puddings are priced at $13 each, with the 1.5kg cake exceptional value at $17. There are also 8gm ‘mini-cakes’ available for $2. Free Hikes and Bikes With Summer now here, it’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the walking, cycling, and exercising trails we have in our local community. Here’s a list of places to visit: • The Rock Lookout and Riley’s Mountain Lookout (Fairlight Road, Mulgoa) A short walk from the carpark through bushland leads to “The Rock”. The path is not level and has some steps. The lookout gives you breathtaking views of the Nepean Gorge. A longer 2.5km track takes you to Riley’s Mountain Lookout. • Blaxland Crossing Reserve (Silverdale Road, Wallacia) Located on the western side of Wallacia, this reserve has open space, picnic tables, BBQs, and a children’s playground. • Mulgoa Nature Reserve (Access via Dillwynia Drive, Glenmore Park) Located at the southwestern edge of Glenmore Park, off Glenmore Parkway from Dillwynia Drive. This reserve features vegetation from the endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland. It provides important habitat for many native fauna especially woodland birds. There are a number of geological features that can be viewed. There are at least 20 vulnerable plant species located in the reserve. Come and Join the Men’s Shed Are you a male over the age of 18 with some spare time during the week? If you answered yes, then maybe Warradale Men’s Shed is for you. Located at 10 Eighteenth Street in Warragamba, they are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week from 9:00am to 2:00pm. They have a business meeting on the first Friday of the month followed by a BBQ lunch. The Men’s Shed have both woodwork and metalwork sections and currently have about 30 members. Activities that take place at Warradale Men’s Shed include meeting and socializing with others, working on individual projects, working on community projects, taking on leadership roles e.g., committee, mentoring young persons, learning more skills, and sharing your skills and experience with others. Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed gives men a safe and busy environment where they can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. There is no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they are looking for. Warradale Men’s Shed is also an incorporated non-profit organization. Those who would like to consider membership can come down for a visit when they are open and find out more details about the shed and what is required. Members of the wider community can call in and see if they have a project or suggestion or if they may be looking for help with something. Some of the projects they are currently working on include arranging a new Honour Board for Luddenham Public School and making an outdoor musical instrument for the school. “I find the Men’s Shed gives me a place for great camaraderie with new mates. When I found I had prostate cancer, there were other men I could talk about the treatment, and it made me more relaxed. I have found the Shed to be an excellent place to learn more skills. We work when we feel like it and to talk when we don’t” said Les Rhodes, Vice President and Secretary. “After a professional life, I found the opportunity to indulge in making wooden items and using my hands. During this period you can place your yellow lid recycling bin with the red lid garbage bin for service each week on your normal collection day. Could Migraines be Genetic?

12% of people live with migraine, 88% do not. Why? Is it their genes? Is it their lifestyle? Research shows both genes and lifestyle (non-shared environment) contribute significantly to their risk of getting migraines. Using identical-twin studies, researchers found when one twin gets migraines and the second doesn’t, genes contribute (30–60%), and non-shared-environment about 35–55% to the risk of migraine. The genetic component is called ‘heritability’. Importantly, a heritability figure provides absolutely no measure of how sensitive any trait (including migraine) is to changes in environment. So even if a trait such as migraine were 100% heritable, whether the trait is expressed, i.e., whether someone gets migraines, may still depend completely on the environment in which the person lives. ‘Concordance’ describes the likelihood of two people with shared genes developing the same disorder. Research looking at 1,300 twins found that: 1. Migraine concordance rates were: a. 26% for identical twins –they have identical genes b. 13% for non-identical twins – they share 50% the same genes c. similar for male and female twin sets 2. For identical twins, the chance of another family member having migraines was: a. 31% if neither twin had migraines b. 45% if one had migraines c. 60% if both twins had migraines

Study authors concluded the influence of genes on risk of getting migraines was much lower than previously thought. Put another way, when one identical twin has migraines, the other twin doesn’t 74% of the time. When a non-identical twin has migraines, the other twin doesn’t 87% of the time. This research seems clear. Since identical twins have identical genes, the only factor differentiating a twin with migraine from a twin without, is environment/lifestyle differences. These encompass diet, sleep-sufficiency and quality, good-stress but not bad-stress, good levels of sunshine and vitamin D, appropriate exercise, good relationships, etc. All of these are within a migraineurs control. The very hopeful message here is that even if your genetics are 100% the same, you don’t have to get migraines. Genes don’t decide your fate.

For the first time ever, local Veronica Leonardo will be hosting a photography exhibition to raise awareness within her community and give back to Cancer Council NSW who supported her through her own cancer journey in 2016. Veronica was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 - having no family history of the disease. Her diagnosis had a huge impact on her plan to start a family and Veronica feels so grateful for the support she was provided by Cancer Council NSW through this challenging time. “My breast cancer diagnosis was a surprise because I felt like I was generally doing the right thing. I remember saying to my surgeon that once the storm passes, I would try to support other people through their own cancer journey. “Many people assume every aspect of cancer treatment is covered by public health, without realising the life-saving treatment is covered but everything outside of it isn’t, such as lymphedema services”. With the kind support of photographer, Karen Jack from InTouch Photography in Penrith, the exhibition will take place at 107 Projects from Monday 24th January 2022 to Sunday 6th February 2022 and features 10 women who are at various stages of their breast cancer journey, illustrating with pride their scars and embracing life post cancer. Their journeys range from 2 years to 24 years in remission. Karen volunteered her time, expertise, and patience to create a truly memorable experience for everyone involved and Veronica hopes the exhibition will give hope and inspiration to women currently facing their own diagnosis. A celebration evening will also be held at Club Parramatta on Wednesday 2nd February 2022, ahead of World Cancer Day. It is hoped this event will raise $5,000 to go towards Cancer Council NSW to help continue their support for cancer patients like Veronica. Across NSW, it is estimated that approximately 6,240 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Australia and thankfully, through research, improvements in early detection and treatment for breast cancer have led to a significant increase in survival rate in recent decades. With screening centres across NSW closed due to the extended lockdown, now more than ever it is important to be breast aware and consult your doctor if you notice any unusual changes to your breasts. New Church Here for Christmas What’s the new building on Silverdale Road, you might ask? That was a question for a while there and thankfully they have managed to put up a sign. Now it’s clear that it’s a new church building. Grace West Anglican Church to be precise. ‘When is it going to open?’ has been the next question. It has looked ready to open for several months now. The recent lockdown and restrictions have delayed the opening. The people of Mulgoa Church, now Grace West Anglican Church, following their merge with Glenmore Park Anglican Church, have spent 35 years planning, and giving towards the building of Silverdale Church. There have been a few false starts, different blueprints, and doubts over whether they could afford to build at all. “Thanks to the perseverance of many, we actually have a finished building. A church building in the heart of Silverdale where we can gather together to worship God, grow in our love and understanding of Jesus Christ and reach out to serve the community of Silverdale and beyond” said John Mahoney of Grace West Anglican Church Silverdale. “And wouldn’t you know it, just in time for Christmas!” he added. They will be around for the Christmas season, even though they aren’t officially launching till late January next year. On the 17th and 18th of December, they will have Christmas lights set up on the church grounds. You can grab a picnic blanket and some dinner and join them to celebrate Christmas under the stars. There will also be a jumping castle and treats ready for the young and young at heart. On Christmas Eve, they will have a Twilight Carols Service at 7:30pm at St Thomas Mulgoa. Then on Christmas day, they will have a family service at Grace West Anglican Church Silverdale at 9:30am. Parental Burnout is Real, and we Need to Take it Seriously To feel ‘burnt out’ is to feel over-extended, exhausted, and that you nothing left to give. The feeling of ‘burnout’ is often accompanied by negative thoughts about yourself and people around you. Burning out can look different for different people. It may look loud and aggressive for some, and quiet and withdrawn for others. Regardless of how it presents, burnout is a serious problem for modern parents. The term‘burnout’was first coined to describe an occupational hazard for certain professionals such as social workers, nurses, and therapists. It was thought that the stress of constantly attending to others in need can lead to a state of fatigue and cynicism. In recent years, researchers have examined how burnout can happen in other contexts. Parenting is broadly considered one of the hardest jobs there is! And, unfortunately, parents around the world are reporting increasing symptoms of burnout. Parents who are burning out often feel they are ineffective or poor in their parenting role. This can relate to unrealistic expectations of parenting. Social media can be a source of distress for some parents when they perceive that everyone else seems to raise their children with no trouble at all. Parental burnout can also make it difficult to see your child in a positive light. There can be resentment or a feeling of emotional distancing that threatens the quality of the parent-child relationship if not addressed. It is important to know that if you are struggling in your parenting duties, you are not alone. Burnout is most often reported by parents of newborns, and at other points of significant change or transition in the parenting journey. It helps to ask other family members or friends to give you some practical or emotional relief during these times. You can also call the NSW Parent Line on 1300 130052 or Lifeline on 13 11 14 for a chat, advice, and referrals. Support is here and available. Burnout is not permanent. You can thrive again, with a team behind you.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Luddenham Public School Luddenham Public School recently had their first onsite Kindergarten Orientation for their 2022 Kindergarten students. Not only was it an orientation, but it was also a Teddy Bears’ Picnic! All the latest editions to the Luddenham Public School family were invited to bring their favourite Teddy from home and share a little bit about their toy. During the Teddy Bears’ Picnic, the school librarian, Mrs Treharne, read the students a story and Mrs Mitchell played lots of fun games and did some colouring in too. “It was fantastic to have all of our nervously excited students onsite as we didn’t think we would be able to have them at our school this year. It was especially nice that we could have one vaccinated parent with their child on site for support throughout the orientation. “This added to the event and the school was so grateful for the opportunity to get to build the foundations with each family which will continue to grow for many years to come” said Sean Holmes, Principal of Luddenham Public School. The 2022 Kindergarten students left the Teddy Bears’ Picnic with big smiles on their faces. Students at the next onsite Kindergarten orientation visit will be going on a pirate treasure hunt. This will be a great opportunity for the students to get to know each of the different areas of the school and continue to develop their understanding of what life is like at ‘big school’. “The new year is shaping up to be a great one at Luddenham Public School and we can’t wait for our Kindergarten students to be a part of the journey we take” explained Sean. Warragamba Silverdale Swim Club have officially started their 2021/2022 season, with local swimmers taking to the pool last month. The season started on the 16th of November 2021 and will finish on the 15th of March 2022. The cost for registration is $50 for the first swimmer, $45 for the second swimmer (in the same family) and $40 for the third swimmer (also in the same family), with a $25 fundraising fee. They are still taking enrolments for this season. The Swim Club meets every Tuesday at Warragamba Swimming Pools (Corner of Farnsworth Avenue and Warradale Road, Warragamba) at 6:00pm. They cater for swimmers aged from 3 years (bubble swimmers) right through to adults. There are 65 swimmers enrolled this year. “Swim Club is a chance to beat your own time, improve your starts and keep fit. We do all swimming strokes throughout the season, including individual medley. We start all our swimmers at 25m swims and progress them up to 50m, 100m and 200m swims. Our Club also has a BBQ every week to help fundraise for the season” said Rebecca Heydon of Warragamba Silverdale Swim Club to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “I enjoy seeing the kids’ smiling faces when you tell them that they got a personal best time that week. All the encouragement and cheering from the kids and parents from the side of the pool is great. At the end of the season, we get to hand out trophies to all our amazing swimmers too” she explained. Local Club Prepares for 50th Year The 2021 Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) season may have ended prematurely due to the pandemic; however, Warragamba Netball Club still made the best of a disrupted year. Over 200 players comprising of 23 teams were registered to play. After 7 games, the season was cancelled. This also meant that there would be no finals games. 5-6 of the club’s teams were leading their respective competitions at the time and were on track to make the finals. “I enjoyed my first year as President. The role was certainly challenging due to COVID, and we are looking forward to getting back out on the court with a full season under our belt” explained Nicole Stanford, President of Warragamba Netball Club. “Thank you to the committee for their hard work that they put in behind the scenes” she continued. The focus now is on the 2022 season. It marks an important milestone for Warragamba Netball Club, as they will be celebrating their 50th Year in the PDNA Competition. They were also one of the ten founding clubs to join PDNA. The club has plans to celebrate their 50th Anniversary next year and will update the community on social media once they have information. Sponsorship opportunities will also be available for local businesses wanting to get behind Warragamba during their milestone year. Registrations for the 2022 season will open on 20th January. Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2021 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Wednesday 1st December until Friday 24th December 2021, Mon-Fri (9am-6pm) and on Saturdays (9am-2pm). Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Santa will be wearing a mask underneath his beard. We usually have a staff member taking the photograph of your pet with Santa, however to minimize the number of people in the room, we will require you to take your own photograph using your phone/camera, or with our camera where we can print off the photo for you. Only 1 client per pet will be allowed in the room at one time. Santa will be photographed with pets only. Great news with next year’s Luddenham Show scheduled to proceed on the 5th and 6th of March. At the recent Annual General Meeting, it was agreed unanimously to start planning the 117th Country Show. They are currently looking for sponsors and ideas for entertainment, with further info available online at luddenhamshow.com.au or by emailing secretary@luddenhamshow. com.au. The Show Society has also received a grant from the NSW Government Community Building Partnership for new grandstand seating and a tractor; more details to follow. The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment received 31 submissions on the Luddenham Village Discussion Paper. Virtually everyone is favouring scenario 4, to grow Luddenham. It is expected that the final plans for Luddenham will be released on the 17th of December. The Department will be running a community information drop-in session to provide individual landowners information on the finalisation of the planning package on Tuesday 21st of December at Twin Creeks. Landowners will be invited to drop in between 6:30pm-8:00pm on the day. Members of the planning team will be available for one-on-one consultation. This is a session for landowners only, and they will be running sessions for real estate agents and other interested professionals in January 2022. Luddenham skyline has now changed forever, with the first of four cranes being installed to construct the airport terminal. On the 19th of October, the Prime Minister, Premier and other Federal and State Members of Parliament were in Luddenham to witness work start on the Airport Terminal Building. This terminal will be a destination in its own right – with specialty retail, restaurants, and cafes, an outdoor plaza that can host events like local food festivals, markets, and community celebrations, as well as being an international and domestic passenger terminal all under the one roof. Also reopening on December 1st is the Western Sydney Airport Experience Centre. I highly recommend that you go and check it out. You have a great view of the Airport site from the Centre, and they will be operating under COVID restrictions. New Gender Equality Dashboard brings Key Statistics on Women Together for the First Time Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith has welcomed the launch of the NSW Government’s Gender Data Dashboard, an online tool that will shine a light on women’s experiences across a range of key areas. Mr Smith said the new online database provides up-to-date statistics on topics such as the gender pay gap, maternal health and higher education completions for women. “Knowledge and information are powerful tools and this dashboard will allow everyone to see where we are doing well and those areas we should continue to prioritise,” Mr Smith said. “For example, it shows us that since 2010 more women than men have completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. “It also shows us where women are experiencing unacceptable difficulties and danger – such as in the areas of domestic and sexual assault. “The online database will also allow students and researchers to bring fresh new insights into projects by enabling them to easily filter information, generate interactive graphs and download slides and photos.” Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the new dashboard brings together publicly available data in one place for the first time, transforming the way people access and use it. “This tool will not just inspire conversations about issues affecting women, it will help the government and non-government sectors work together on effective solutions.” Mrs Taylor said. The NSW Gender Equality Dashboard will be updated throughout the year and presents more than 20 headline measures, which track women’s progress across economic opportunity and advancement, health and wellbeing and participation and empowerment. Local Jobs on Offer for Trainees and Undergraduates, Opening the Door to Careers at Wollondilly Council

Young job seekers and students who live in the Wollondilly Local Government Area are invited to apply for a Local Skills Ready program that will kick start their careers, with more local opportunities than ever available in 2022. My Gateway, in partnership with Wollondilly Shire Council, is recruiting for 15 positions to be based at Council, with additional positions made possible thanks to funding from the Commonwealth and NSW Governments’ Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Package. The roles are for 12 month contracts for full time trainees, school based trainees and undergraduate students across a variety of Council departments including Finance, Employee Relations, Library Services, Infrastructure, Information Technology and more. The positions available include six new trainees working full-time, four schoolbased trainees working one day a week and for the first time, five undergraduate students working around their university studies. Undergraduates will be placed in Development Engineering, Recreational Planning, Environment Planning, Town Planning and Finance and work between 21 and 35 hours per week depending on their university study schedule. Locals will attain nationally recognised qualifications and/or critical work experience towards their university degree. Planning Proposal Aims To Grow Visitor Economy And Boost Local Jobs

Wollondilly Council is committed to developing the visitor economy in the Shire by making it easier to establish tourism related developments, while supporting local businesses and communities in their recovery from the impacts of drought, the Black Summer bushfires, recent flood events and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Council is proposing a number of shire-wide amendments to the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2011 to attract investment, increase local jobs and further develop the visitor experience.

The amendments also seek to guarantee the long-term viability of agricultural activities by allowing landowners to diversify their income streams, and to ensure clarity in the planning system. CEO Ben Taylor said, “Wollondilly has amazing natural and rural land which provides a great opportunity for tourism; with the potential for walking trails and tours, biking experiences, wellness activities, and function and conference centres.” “Quality agriculture and horticulture in the area also opens up opportunities for agritourism, expanded farm-based tourism and generating income streams.” “I congratulate the Mayor and Councillors together with the Council staff and community who have fought hard to bring this dream to fruition, creating local jobs and enabling our Shire to realise its enormous potential”. “We want to recognise the visitor economy as a core objective for development and strengthen the role and function of employment land.” The proposal also seeks to implement a recommendation from Council’s Employment Land Strategy to provide further clarify and distinction between land use zones. Council responds to Waste Survey with extra Christmas Recycling Service

The new service has been introduced for the 2021 Christmas period in response to feedback received from residents who participated in the Future of Waste Services Survey earlier this year. From Monday 20 December 2021 until Friday 14 January 2022, Wollondilly residents will have their yellow lid recycling collected every week along with their usual weekly red lid waste service. Wollondilly CEO Ben Taylor thanked everyone who participated in the Waste Survey. “We asked the community to share their thoughts about waste management, including things like bin collection, household clean-ups, exploring new technologies and the environmental and financial costs associated with waste.” “The response was fantastic, with more than 1400 households providing feedback; putting us in a fantastic position to investigate options and plan for the future of our Shire’s waste services. NSW SES and Resilience NSW have joined forces to remind locals in the HawkesburyNepean Valley that storm season is upon us, a wet summer is forecast and there is increased risk of flooding across NSW, particularly within the region. NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said the widespread flooding that impacted the region in March demonstrated not only the potential for devastation, but also the importance of preparing for these events. “It wasn’t that long ago we saw major flooding sweep through this area,

impacting thousands of properties,” Commissioner York said. “There is the very real risk of a similar event happening again, which is why we

need communities to know their risks and have a plan now. “It’s important those in the area know the early signs of potential flooding, are familiar with their key evacuation routes, follow advice of NSW SES, and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit ahead of time. “While you can’t fight floods, you can certainly prepare for them,” she said. Resilience NSW Executive Director, Operational Management and Partnerships, Dominic Lane, urged locals to use the start of summer to have a conversation with friends and families about being prepared for seasonal emergencies. “Our emergency service organisations do an incredible job keeping us safe, but they can only do so much. Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility, whether at home, at work or away on holidays,” Mr Lane said. “Think about the area you’re in and what types of emergencies could affect you and plan now for what you will do in an emergency. Get your home or business ready, connect with NSW emergency services to stay informed and look out for each other,” he said.
