The Glenmore Park Action Group is set to be revitalised with its next meeting on Thursday 13 May. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Medicine Case of the Month
Heart Failure and Heartworm Infestation ‘Bobby’ is a 12 year old Chihuahua. ‘Bobby’ presented to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital when he suddenly started coughing. On physical examination ‘Bobby’ was having difficulty breathing and he had a heart murmur. Chest radiographs showed an enlarged heart and his lungs were full of fluid. ‘Bobby’ was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The common causes of heart failure include: infection, degenerative heart valve disease and heartworm disease, but there are many other causes. ‘Bobby’ tested positive for heartworm. ‘Bobby’ was treated with a diuretic and two heart medications. The diuretic cleared the fluid buildup in the lungs which allowed ‘Bobby’ to breathe easier, and the heart medications made the heart pump more efficiently which minimised further fluid build up in his lungs. ‘Bobby’ made a speedy recovery once on the medications and was coughing much less the next day. ‘Bobby’ was then treated for heart-
worms. ‘Bobby’ stayed in hospital for 2 days for the administration of the heartworm treatment. ‘Bobby’ will need to be on heartworm prevention and his heart medications for the rest of his life.
Heartworm Disease Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a blood borne parasite that infects dogs (and rarely cats). Heartworm infection can kill your dog and is spread when infective mosquitoes bite your dog and inject heartworm larvae. So wherever there are mosquitoes, there is a risk of your dog
contracting heartworm. The heartworm larvae migrate from under the skin to the blood vessels, where they develop into adult heartworm. The presence of adult heartworm in the blood vessels of the heart and lungs restricts blood flow, which can lead to heart failure. The treatment for adult heartworm is dangerous due to side effects like thromboembolism (clots within the blood vessels) and death. Even if the heartworm are killed by the treatment, the dog may still have permanent heart failure. Heartworm Prevention Prevention of heartworm infection is better than the cure. Prevention is easy and should be started in your dog from 6-8 weeks of age. There are numerous types of monthly prevention available including spot on products, chewables, tablets and a yearly injection (Proheart SR12). If your dog has not been on heartworm prevention before, then a blood test is required to ensure your pet is negative before starting heartworm prevention. Fame for Fiona After spending five years fronting the country rock band, 5 Hour Drive, Fiona took a break during 2009 to write and record her first solo country album. The 12 tracks are all original with some co-writing by Barbara Baillie and the album’s producer, Roger Corbett. Her songs have been described as ‘highly contemporary, rocky and witty, but always country.’ Fiona has had the privilege of working with some of Australia’s leading country musicians, such as Mick Albeck, Glen Hannah, Ian Lees, Bill Risby and Michel Rose to name a few. 10 year old Mitchell Herring is performing in the Australian Ballet’s production of ‘The Silver Rose’ at the Opera House. He has been selected for the Australian Ballet Interstate program for children under 14, an exclusive program for just 30 children. Mitchell loves all forms of dance and trains at the Performance Arts Workshop (PAWS) in Kingswood. Mitchell has lived in Glenmore Park all his life and is a student at Penrith Anglican College. He has been dancing since he was 5 and both his sisters also dance. Mitchell wants to acknowledge the help and support of his teachers Rebecca Liu-Brennan and Jason fron PAWS “Their encouragement and dedication has given me the extra motivation. I love dancing and have persuaded quite a few of my friends to try it and they also found it great fun”. Mitchell’s teachers and his family all had to wait for several days before they could see the performance as the shows were booked out!

Love Blooms at Glenmore Shops Congratulations to Damien and Li Li Davy (below) who were married on 28 February 2010 at Jonah’s at Whale Beach. The happy couple met when Damien worked at Dino’s Pizza in Glenmore Park and Li Li worked at Asian Pearl Restaurant next door. One day in 2004, they started talking and the rest is history. Damian and Li Li honeymooned for three weeks in Thailand and have bought a house in Orchard Hills.

Vertical Rescue training NSW Fire Brigades stations from Western Sydney, including both primary rescue fire engines from Regentville station and a hydraulic ladder pumper from Penrith were involved in a simulated vertical rescue exercise over the weekend. It was reported to the fire brigades in attendance at the exercise that two people required rescuing using vertical rescue techniques from below Knapsack Gully near Emu Plains. Fire rescue officers used a hydraulic ladder truck to raise a stretcher 50 metres from the valley floor. Simultaneously a second person was rescued from the side of the gully using rope rescue
techniques. Fire Brigade crews regularly hold combined training exercises to maintain skills to enable them to conduct real life rescues from fires, general rescue call outs and incidents involving hazardous materials incidents.
Murder Investigation The murder of an unidentified man at Sheoak Place in Glenmore Park is still under investigation. A 42 year old man was shot dead on the 6th February about 10.15pm. Police believe the murder was drug related and 3 men were seen running from the house following the shootings. They were all wearing balaclavas and one of them was of Pacific Islander appearance. Kitchen Organics Bags on the Way Penrith City Council have said that following extensive environmental testing the delivery of kitchen organics bags to all households is expected to start in a month. Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said: “The three bin waste collection service is one of the most important environmental initiatives undertaken by Council.” In order to ensure the kitchen organics bag’s successful introduction a number of extensive tests have been
required on the bags, and on the inks used to print important information, to ensure their suitability and conformation to Australian Standards. More than three million certified kitchen organics bags are expected to arrive at Council in mid May and will be distributed to the community as soon as possible. Initially 40 bags will be issued per household. This amount is based on investigations into what was sufficient initial numbers for council’s with a similar system. Council recognises that different families have different needs and households who find they need more bags can contact Council. We will also have them available at our offices. Council is confident that the organics bags will solve many of the issues residents may be experiencing. Council will monitor the success of the bags and provide a report to the Waste Services Committee, which includes resident representatives, for review. To ensure the quality of the A Grade compost produced from the contents of the green lidded organics bin, it is essential that kitchen organics bags conform to Australian
Standards. Testing of the bags and inks is now complete. Council has already used compost to upgrade a number of sporting fields in the city including a major overhaul of Cranebrook Oval. Once received, residents can use the bags to line their Council supplied kitchen organics bins prior to placing organic waste in their 240 litre green lidded organics bins. Green lidded organics bins are collected weekly and should contain fruit and vegetable scraps; fish, meat and bones; tea bags and coffee grounds; bread, cereal, pasta and grains; leftover foods; grass clippings, sticks and twigs; weeds, leaves and flowers: paper towels and tissues; pet excrement; and, foodsoiled paper and cardboard such as pizza boxes and paper plates.
