Freight Takes Flight in Western Sydney

A Qantas plane laden with AusPost parcels was the first freight plane to take off from Western Sydney International Airport recently. The new cargo precinct is a big boost to Sydney’s aviation cargo capacity, with extensive warehousing space which will ultimately cater for up to 1.8 million tonnes of air cargo annually. Stage one of the precinct will be able to cater for up to eight wide-body freighters like 747s or 16 narrow-body domestic freighters like 737s or A321s at the same time. WSI’s cargo precinct will be utilised by Qantas Freight, Menzies Aviation, dnata Cargo, dnata Catering & Retail and Texel Air. This modern cargo hub will support businesses and strengthen supply chains as Western Sydney is connected to the world. Western Sydney International Airport’s freight operations will be joined by regular passenger services from 11:00am 25 October 2026, when Jetstar’s sold-out inaugural flight JQ362 takes off from Western Sydney bound for the Gold Coast. Western Sydney’s new 24-hour airport is the centrepiece of the Albanese Labor Government’s near $18 billion investment in Western Sydney, including the future Sydney Metro Airport rail connection and significant road upgrades to nearby Elizabeth Drive, Fifteenth Avenue and Mamre Road. This investment builds upon benefits already delivered through the recent opening of the M12 Motorway. The entire WSI project has created over 12,800 jobs, half of which have come from the local area. More than $500 million has also been invested in more than 360 Western Sydney based businesses during major construction works at WSI, including local tradies and construction companies, caterers, and security guards. “Testing at the freight precinct is now complete, and now Western Sydney International Airport is operational and welcoming freight flights. “Our first flights have arrived and are being packed and readied for departure as we speak. “It’s exciting progress as we gear up to seeing passenger flights commence on October 25” said Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King. “The growth and demand for parcel delivery from Australia Post is continuing to grow and it’s important the infrastructure is there to support that. “Australia Post is a trusted national service that keeps our economy moving and the country connected” said Minister for Communications Anika Wells MP. “Western Sydney Airport gives freight and logistics operators the round-the-clock capacity they need in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. “Combined with the Aerotropolis, it will mean manufacturers and exporters can move goods from factory floors to aircrafts in hours, not days - creating faster, more resilient supply chains and helping Australian businesses to compete in global markets. “This is how we build industrial capability, attract investment and cement Western Sydney as a major hub for industry, logistics and advanced manufacturing” said Minister for Industry Senator Tim Ayres. r Image Supplied | Article: Catherine King MP

Local Leads Australia to Glasgow

Jordan Springs’ Barry Gray will proudly represent Australia when the Governor Macquarie Memorial Pipe Band competes at the 2026 World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. More than 200 bands from over 15 countries will gather at Glasgow Green on Saturday, 15 August, for what is widely regarded as the “Olympics of the Pipe Band World”. The Governor Macquarie Memorial Pipe Band has travelled with 60 musicians aged from 12 to 70, supported by around 30 family members and friends. The musicians come from across Australia and New Zealand, with Barry serving as the band’s Pipe Major and Musical Director. “I have been honoured to serve as Pipe Major and Musical Director since 2008,” Barry said. “My role is to lead the band musically; prepare the players and ensure we perform to the highest musical and presentation standards possible.” The championships will be particularly poignant for Barry, as they will be his last as Pipe Major. After 18 years in the role, he will hand the position to former student Riordan Drake and return his focus to teaching and mentoring developing musicians. The band’s World Championships campaign has been more than two years in the making, involving weekly rehearsals, monthly specialist tuition weekends and countless hours of individual practice.

The logistics have also been considerable, with 32 drums, bagpipes, uniforms and equipment transported halfway around the world. “It’s a bit like organising a family skiing holiday, except with 90 people, several buses, a mountain of luggage … and a lot more bagpipes!” Barry joked. Before the World Championships, the band is competing at four Highland Games and performing at iconic Scottish locations, including Stirling Castle, Blair Atholl Castle, The Kelpies and Midhope Castle, known to Outlander fans as Lallybroch. At Glasgow Green, the band will perform a March, Strathspey and Reel selection and a Medley before internationally renowned adjudicators. “Representing Australia is an enormous honour and one we never take for granted,” Barry said. “People often see the six or seven minutes we spend on the competition field, but they don’t see the thousands of hours of practice, rehearsals, fundraising and personal sacrifice that make those few minutes possible.” Regardless of the final result, Barry said marching onto Glasgow Green with Australian flags displayed on the band’s drums and pipes would be treasured forever. “You can buy a set of bagpipes, but you can’t buy the friendships that come with them,” he said. “After more than fifty years involved in pipe bands, I can honestly say those friendships have been life’s greatest reward.”

Jordan Springs Run Club Builds Local Community

Jordan Springs Run Club is continuing to grow as a welcoming meeting point for local runners and walkers, with 486 members now part of the group’s Facebook community. The club meets every Sunday at 7:00am in the courtyard outside the old Lendlease building, where members gather before heading out for their weekly run. According to Kristan Hutchinson, the group has developed a consistent core of members who regularly attend, while continuing to attract interest from people looking to get active and meet others in the local community. The club caters for more than experienced runners, with walkers also encouraged to join. The relaxed atmosphere is an important part of the group, with members able to catch up for a coffee at XS afterwards.

“We’re more than happy for anyone who wants to run or walk to come along and join us for a coffee afterwards at XS,” Kristan said. The club is also looking ahead, with plans being considered for an event in Jordan Springs East. Organisers are hoping to use the inaugural route for the event, giving members an opportunity to explore another part of the growing community together. For those considering joining a running group but unsure where to start, the Sunday morning sessions offer a chance to get involved at a community level, whether running, walking or simply meeting new people. With a strong membership base, a regular group of attendees and continued interest from newcomers, Jordan Springs Run Club is establishing itself as a regular part of the local Sunday morning routine. Anyone interested in taking part can attend the Sunday 7:00am meeting at the courtyard outside the old Lendlease building and join the group for a run or walk, followed by coffee and conversation.

If you’re looking for something to gift Dad for Father’s Day, Penrith City Council’s beloved Trees for Dad community event returns for its eighth year on Sunday 6 September. Everyone is invited to plant a tree in honour and celebration of their dad, grandfather, uncle or father figure at Berkshire Park Recreation Ground in Berkshire Park. The event is divided into 30-minute sessions, with the first session starting at 8:30am and the last at 12:00pm. Registrations are essential to ensure that enough trees will be available to plant on the day. “Trees for Mum and Trees for Dad are two very important events our community looks forward to every year. Is Core Strengthening Good for Lower Back Pain? From previous articles, you’ve probably gleaned that tight/ inflamed lower back muscles and connective tissue are the cause of most chronic back pain, either directly or indirectly. If you’ve suffered from chronic back pain, then you may have come across the conventional wisdom which: 1. attributes ‘poor core strength’ as a cause of back pain … and 2. promotes ‘core strengthening as the solution’. I regularly see clients who have come in with long-standing ‘chronic’ back pain, many of whom have been doing prescribed core-strengthening exercises religiously. In some cases, these exercises helped for a while; in others, they did not. Either way, their back pain has remained. This is because the core-strength theory is fundamentally flawed. Here’s why: Although an inflamed back can be due to many causes, let’s look at an acute injury such as a ruptured disc. When a person has such an injury to the spine, the back muscles and connective tissue swell, become inflamed, and lock up around the injury. It’s a standard protective mechanism that’s described in any standard medical text. Once the muscles become inflamed and tighten, in most cases (unless work is done to de-inflame and lengthen the muscles), they’ll remain tight and inflamed. If disc

protrusion exists, it will likely remain protruded. Doing strength work will build muscle but will also lead to muscles shortening and reduced range of motion unless regular stretching of the same muscles occurs. Doing religious corestrengthening exercises will tighten the core muscles. In the case of a back injury involving a slipped disc, where the back is already tight and maintaining a disc in the protruded position, this is exactly the last thing one should normally do. Key to remediating this type of back injury is to do the following: 1. Stop doing core-strengthening exercises for now. 2. Get remedial deep-tissue therapy to de-inflame/lengthen the muscles. 3. Perform daily core stretching. 4. Start core strengthening only once the injured disc tissue has healed. 5. Carry out core strengthening only with concurrent core stretching to guard against re-injury. Llandilo Public School Celebrates 160 Years

Llandilo Public School is preparing to celebrate a major milestone, with the school marking 160 years of educating and bringing together generations of local families. The school, which first opened in 1866, will host its Llandilo Public School 160 Year Celebration on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The special community event will begin at 4:00pm and is expected to bring past and present students, families and community members together for an evening of celebration. Planning for the anniversary has been taking place throughout the year, with a range of activities planned for the big day.

From 4:00pm, visitors will be able to explore the school museum and take a look back at the school’s long history. Food trucks will also be on site, providing plenty of options for those wanting to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the celebrations. Students will showcase their creativity through an art show, while the evening will feature a traditional bush dance from 5:30pm, giving the community an opportunity to come together and celebrate the school’s enduring connection with the area. A community cookbook is also currently being compiled as part of the celebrations. Members of the community who would like to contribute are encouraged to keep an eye on the school’s social media pages for further details. The upcoming event follows the success of Llandilo Public School’s 150 Year Celebration in 2016, which brought the community together to recognise the school’s history and achievements. National Meals on Wheels Day was celebrated on Wednesday 26 August 2026, which saw communities across Australia including Nepean Food Services recognise the extraordinary impact of Meals on Wheels in delivering not only essential nutrition, but also connection, dignity and care to older Australians and people in need. National Meals on Wheels Day shines a light on the thousands of volunteers, staff and supporters who form a nationwide movement of care that has supported communities for more than 70 years. Chair of Meals on Wheels™ Australia, Paul Sadler, said the day was an opportunity to acknowledge the enduring importance of human connection in community care. “Meals on Wheels is one of Australia’s most trusted and enduring community services, but at its heart it is something even more powerful, it is neighbours caring for neighbours,” Mr Sadler said. “Every meal delivered represents more than nutrition. It is a check-in, a conversation and a moment of connection that can quite literally change someone’s day, and sometimes their life.” Mr Sadler said for over seven decades volunteers remain the backbone of the organisation and a vital part of Australia’s social fabric. “They are not simply delivering meals, they are delivering reassurance, dignity and connection.” At the recent National Conference in Adelaide, Moira Were AM, Mayor of the City of Onkaparinga and Civic and Social Impact Leader, spoke powerfully about the role of community as a practice and care as a movement. “Community is only as strong as the care that pumps through it,” Ms Were said. Addressing the growing issue of social isolation, she noted, “Loneliness isn’t a choice; it’s a public health issue. It kills quietly, often in the houses you or I drive by every day.” She said Meals on Wheels cannot be replicated by technology or artificial intelligence. Locally, Ditte Kozak, General Manager of Nepean Food Services, said the service continues to play a vital role in supporting the local community. “At Nepean Food Services, we see every day how important these small moments of connection are for our clients and volunteers.” National Meals on Wheels Day was a chance to reflect on the essential role of human connection in building healthier, more resilient communities. “When people show up for one another, communities thrive,” Mr Sadler said. “This is what Meals on Wheels represents every day, a movement of care, powered by volunteers and strengthened by the community.”

Ancient Wisdom for 21st-Century Issues – More Than Next Door Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with an elderly gentleman in our community. I asked him what he liked most about living in Jordan Springs. Without hesitation, he replied, “Everything is close! I can simply walk to the shops whenever I want or need to.” Then I asked what he found most difficult. His answer came quietly: “Loneliness. I don’t know my neighbours. Home Care comes once a week, and they’re gone after 10 or 15 minutes. I have no way of travelling out of the suburb for social or spiritual support.” I walked away thinking: How is it possible to feel so alone in a community of 18,000 people? We’ve built neighbourhoods where houses stand side by side, yet people can still feel invisible. Proverbs speaks directly into that reality: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act” (Prov. 3:27). Wisdom is never just about making good decisions; it is about loving people well. Our neighbours aren’t simply the people who live beside us—they are people God places within our reach to care for. For Christians, that means seeing our neighbours not as interruptions, but as opportunities to reflect Christ’s love. A conversation, a shared meal, an offer of help, or an invitation to church may be exactly what someone needs. And if you’re not a Christian, perhaps this is an invitation too. We all long to be known and loved. The God of the Bible sees the lonely, and through Jesus, He is creating a family where strangers become neighbours, and neighbours become brothers and sisters. Perhaps loving our neighbour begins by simply learning their name.

It has experienced many things: men leaving to fight wars overseas, depression and unemployment, alongside the joys of many families growing up in the region. The question many ask of today’s situation is: when will suburban development take over? In the meantime, Saint David’s will continue to be a place of worship. Each Sunday, worship takes place within the context of Scripture, tradition and reason. Scripture is that collection of writings by many authors, handed down through the centuries. In particular, it is that which relates to the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus. Tradition gives to Jesus the title Christ: God with us in human flesh. Down through history, tradition has been a guiding force, where people have tested their faith in Jesus by applying his principles in living and using the gift of reason to give the reasons for belief. Worship at Saint David’s is not entertainment. It is applying the discipline of prayer in worship, directed not towards gaining a release from the obligations which we find in life, but rather towards finding meaning in life and how best to live within given situations. As the service is directed towards redirecting thought and emotion based on the teaching and example of Jesus the Christ, so we find benefit for our own personal emotions and belief. Jesus told those who followed him, “Come unto me and you will find rest for your soul, for my burden is light.” What is placed before us is the continued challenge to walk honestly in how we live, work and interact in society. The “burden is light” in fulfilling this teaching if there is continual placement of trust in Jesus. In continued worship, that conviction is enhanced.

Our pets are cherished members of the family, providing companionship, comfort and unconditional love. While sharing our lives with animals brings countless benefits, it’s also important to understand that some diseases can be passed between animals and people. These are known as zoonotic diseases. The good news is that the risk of catching a zoonotic disease from a well-cared-for pet is generally very low. With regular veterinary care, good hygiene and a few simple precautions, you can help keep both your family and your pets healthy. One of the most common zoonotic concerns is intestinal worms, including roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. These parasites can be transmitted through contaminated soil, water or contact with infected animals. While infections in people are uncommon, they can cause stomach upset, skin irritation and other health problems. Keeping your pet on a regular worming program is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce this risk. Another condition people often hear about is ringworm. Despite its name, ringworm isn’t caused by a worm at all. It’s a fungal infection that affects the skin, producing red, itchy, circular patches in both animals and people. It spreads through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. If your pet develops areas of hair loss or skin lesions, it’s important to have them examined by your veterinarian promptly.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, including rodents and wildlife. People and pets can become infected through contaminated water or soil, particularly if bacteria enter the body through cuts or the eyes, nose or mouth. Vaccination is available for dogs and plays an important role in reducing the risk of this potentially serious disease. Some skin conditions can also be passed between pets and people. Sarcoptic mange, often called scabies, is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching. Prompt veterinary treatment not only helps your pet recover but also reduces the chance of the mites spreading to other animals or family members. Cat owners should also be aware of Cat Scratch Disease, a bacterial infection that can occasionally develop after a scratch or bite from an infected cat. Most cases are mild, but washing any scratches or bites thoroughly with soap and water and avoiding rough play can help minimise the risk. Another well-known zoonotic disease is toxoplasmosis; a parasite commonly associated with cats that hunt prey. Although many people have heard of it, the risk of infection from household cats is often lower than people think. Good litter tray hygiene, wearing gloves when gardening and thoroughly cooking meat all help reduce exposure. Pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems should take extra precautions and discuss any concerns with their healthcare provider. Fortunately, preventing zoonotic diseases is straightforward. Wash your hands after handling pets or cleaning up after them, dispose of pet waste appropriately, keep vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date, and schedule regular veterinary health checks. These simple measures go a long way towards protecting everyone in the household. Music For Life Spring Ball Returns In March 2008, Luddenham resident Ann Willmington received life changing news. She had a brain tumour and was given just 18 months to live. Thanks to world renowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo, Ann was given a second chance. After three surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Ann defied the odds and survived one of the deadliest cancers in Australia. Today, Ann is dedicated to helping find a cure. Through Music For Life, she has spent more than 15 years raising funds for Brain Cancer Research, supporting innovative research aimed at accelerating a cure for brain cancer. Since its inception, Music For Life has raised over $500,000 for brain cancer research.
