Make a Beeline for Penrith’s Temporary Wildflower Meadow
Penrith City Council invites residents to visit the “Let it Bee” wildflower meadow at Grey Gums Oval until May 2022 before the wildflowers are cultivated back into the soil. Penrith Council was awarded funding under the NSW Government’s Greening the Great West Walk program to plant a temporary wildflower meadow at Grey Gums Oval, Cranebrook. The planting will help reduce temperatures along the walk, mitigate the urban heat island effect, and help enhance biodiversity. After flowering, Council staff will collect suitable seeds for propagation in Council’s nursery before the wildflowers are cultivated back into the soil for tree planting. Penrith City Council’s General Manager, Warwick Winn, praised the garden for its innovation and sustainable approach. “Council is proud to invite residents to visit the site and admire the flowers that have been planted in a bee shape,” Mr Winn said. “By planting these trees, we’re raising community awareness of the understanding of heat and the importance of cooling the Penrith LGA, which plays a key role in Council’s Cooling the City strategy. “The wildflower meadow is the first of its kind and is an innovative project that Council is excited to be a part of. “I highly encourage residents to come to the site to see what flowers, butterflies and other pollinators you can spot before they’re gone.” Minister for Western Sydney and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said a temporary wildflower meadow at Grey Gums Oval is being planted to transform the inferior clay soil and allow the planting of 78 new trees. “The temporary wildflower installation is a creative way to prime the earth and overcome challenges to tree planting, creating an area that will be an asset for the community, now and in the future,” Mr Ayres said. “Once planted the 78 new trees will boost canopy cover and bring down temperatures along the walk, while providing local habitat to native wildlife,” he said.
The wildflower meadow is on the route of the Great West Walk, a 65km walk from Parramatta to the base of the Blue Mountains. Council has planted native wildflowers such as Bulbine bulbosa, Calotis lappulacea, Pultenaea villosa and Wahlenbergia, which are species that have adapted to Penrith’s soils, temperatures and climate over millions of years. Opportunity to Take Part in Penrith’s Magnetic Places Activities Penrith City Council is encouraging residents to participate in a suite of free arts activities now on offer through this year’s Magnetic Places program. Penrith City Council’s spokesperson, Karen McKeown OAM, said Magnetic Places has funded 104 successful placemaking projects since its inception in 2007, and this year’s round of activities will continue to nurture creative thinking and collaboration. The Magnetic Places program invites our communities to see their suburb in a different light and enjoy new and exciting experiences close to home. “Year after year Penrith residents try their hand at something new and at the completion of the project suburbs in our community are transformed, with inspiring art and programs popping up around the City for everyone to enjoy,” Ms McKeown said. “While the current array of arts initiatives will be delivered in a COVIDsafe way, they still offer the opportunity to take part in a placemaking project that sees community members appreciate their surroundings and develop a greater sense of pride in where they live. “Council is proud to deliver this to our residents for free as the impact this has on residents and at public spaces in some of our oldest suburbs is invaluable.” Three Magnetic Places projects are now available for community members to jump into. Pool Fences Save Lives Penrith City Council is issuing a warning about defective and unfenced swimming pools, and is calling on residents to ensure all pools – especially inflatable pools – are properly fenced off. Penrith City Council’s General Manager, Warwick Winn said residents shouldn’t forego their family’s safety as they look to enjoy the warmer months. “Too often shoppers look at the cheap cost of these inflatable pools without thinking of the safety requirements to operate them.” Active supervision by an adult is the best protection against drowning, but a pool barrier is another layer of protection if supervision is interrupted. Children aged under five continue to be the age group that accounts for the largest number of drowning deaths in swimming pools in Australia. It is important to ensure that home pools, including portable and inflatable pools that hold 30cm of water or more are properly fenced with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Often toddlers wander around backyards and get into trouble because the pool is unfenced, or the gate is propped open. Council has a zero tolerance compliance program and will issue on the spot fines of $550 if it is found that the gate of a pool has been propped open or there is an unfenced portable or inflatable pool. As Fate Would Have It Ropes Crossing resident Sara Claassens started her photography business just five months ago. As fate would have it, a chance encounter would turn her one-time hobby into a popular business. “I was pulling into my driveway and saw a group of people in the park, obviously dressed up for an event but taking photos on an iPhone. We had just come out of lockdown, and I thought, ‘No, this won’t do!’. So, I ran inside to grab my camera and offered to take some photos for this group. They were so appreciative, and it made me realise that this is what I wanted to do. I wanted the people in my area to have access to beautiful photos of themselves and their loved ones. I’ve loved every moment of it since” smiled an excited Sara. “I have always loved the way a photo can capture the emotion and the feeling of a moment. I’m that person at any gathering taking photos of the small details, the details that make up what it felt like to be there” she added. Sara particularly enjoys photographing families and couples. She loves capturing the connection between people. “There is something really special about that” Sara said. She can often be found scouting locations in Ropes Crossing or Jordan Springs for her photo shoots. “We have so many gorgeous parks that I’m a bit spoiled for choice actually! I couldn’t pick a favourite” she stated. So, what’s the secret to taking the perfect photo you might ask? “Oh, if I could tell you that, the photography industry would be out of business! In my opinion though, it has to do with really feeling the moment. You can compose something with all the technical elements perfectly in place but if it doesn’t match the mood of your subjects, it will fall flat” she ended. Joeys Bounce into 2022 Season Registrations for the 2022 season are now open for Jordan Springs Joeys FC, as the popular club look to have their biggest year yet. Despite a disrupted season, the local club had over 250 players across 26 teams take the field in 2021. This consisted of 20 junior teams and 6 senior teams. This was an amazing achievement for their first year at Jordan Springs. “Without a doubt the highlight for the club was the support from the local community and local businesses. We had the pleasure of welcoming over 200 new players and their families into our club and aim to increase these numbers in 2022. “Our existing members transitioned to the new club structure and home ground seamlessly and we appreciate their ongoing support over the years” said Jordan Springs Joeys FC. The ongoing popularity of soccer and a full season in sight should ensure the club grows this season. “We are looking forward to the ongoing engagement with the local community and businesses to grow and develop the club. We are committed to increasing female participation in football and encourage females of all ages and abilities to register and play for our club” they replied. Registrations will be accepted until the 12th of February. After this date, they will only take players to fill spots in existing teams. The club recommend everyone register early to avoid disappointment. Rap 4 Change, a local not-for-profit outreach educational youth organisation was formed in 2015 and provides programs to educate, engage and empower our youth to reach their full potential. The first appearance from R4C was a performance at a local school, which consisted of artists and a DJ performing a range of songs which tackled issues such as bullying, peer pressure, mental health, racism, and self-harm. The feedback from the teachers, students and parents was overwhelming. This was ultimately the motivation for them to start their R4C journey, hence the name Rap 4 Change. “Even though we have no government funding, R4C are committed to doing our best to keep disadvantaged and disengaged youth off the streets by creating and introducing them to safe community spaces” said MC Free of Rap 4 Change. Since the beginning, they now have many programs. This includes Rap 4 Change Gardening Services. Rap 4 Change Gardening Services is a platform for youth to learn life skills and see the value of their worth and work in our community and amongst society. It began when the aftermath of Covid increased the lack of jobs and apprenticeships available through networks, leaving young men who had successfully completed their Leadership Program with very limited job and educational opportunities. “They say it all begins at home, so we started teaching our youth the importance of ground maintenance and its positive effects on mental health. From this, we asked the community to assist us with giving our youth the opportunity to showcase their developing talent and skills to transform their homes. Our boys take a lot of pride in every job they do, and love that they are doing great work for the community” explained MC Free. Parents Cannot Afford to “Switch Off” When it Comes to Kids and Technology Much of our digital world has not been built with the safety of children in mind, and recent media coverage has highlighted the risks. Given the scale of the problem, caregivers understandably feel overwhelmed. When we face tremendous challenges, a common human response is to ignore, deny or delay responding. What this sometimes looks like in families is leaving children to their own devices (quite literally!) Navigating the internet is like driving a car. It’s not only about whether a child or young person can operate the technology (growing up in the digital age, children and young people often adapt faster to new technology than adults do!). It’s about whether they have the cognitive, social, and emotional maturity to appropriately handle challenges in the online space. Top tips for preparing children to use the internet: Children need supervision, guidance, and support to be good digital citizens. From the beginning, explain that owning or operating devices is a privilege, not a right. Clearly articulate the limits, and let your child know that continued use of a device depends on their capacity to use it safely and appropriately. You will be most effective if you can understand and join your child’s digital world. Learn about their favourite places or activities, who they connect with online and how they understand the internet. Find ways you can connect over online activities, such as playing a game together. Communicate regularly about online safety. If you make an executive decision (i.e., removal of a device or app), explain your reasons. Where appropriate (and especially with young people), consider inviting your child into the problem solving – explain your concern and then ask, “what can we do about this?” Be a good digital role model. Children learn far more from what they see us do than what they hear us say! Consider your own online behaviour. Does this behaviour reflect the values you want to impart on your children? Thousands of children across the country will walk through the school gates for the first time this month, beginning their education journey. 5-year-old twins Lucie and Alfie Pritchard are two of those children who be starting Kindergarten at Jordan Springs Public School. Lucie and Alfie will be joining their older brother, 7-year-old Charlie at the school this year. Younger brother Freddie (3) is yet to start school. “Both Lucie and Alfie are excited about starting school. Lucie is looking forward to learning how to write and playing with new friends, whilst Alfie is looking forward to riding and walking to school and learning maths” explained Donna Pritchard, Lucie and Alfie’s Mum. Away from big school, Lucie loves swimming, gymnastics, drawing, writing, barbies and playing mums and dads. Alfie enjoys playing and watching footy (his favourite team is the Penrith Panthers), swimming, maths, Spiderman and playing with his cars and monster trucks. Even though they haven’t started kindergarten yet, the twins know what they’d like to do when they finish. “I want to be a mum and a nurse,” said Lucie. “I want to play for the Penrith Panthers or be a doctor,” said Alfie. For many parents and carers, that first day of school is filled with mixed emotions as they wave goodbye to their children. “It’s all a bit overwhelming if I am honest. When Charlie started kindy, it was the beginning of the COVID outbreak, so he hasn’t actually completed a whole year of formal schooling and I am hoping the twins don’t have to go through the same. “A huge milestone for them both and they are more than ready for school, so I am excited for them, but it saddens me that these two little, tiny premature babies are growing up so fast. I will miss them incredibly, but I will also enjoy a much-needed break while the three older ones are at school and the little one is at preschool/long daycare a few days” Donna replied. Local children’s book author Nicky Mee has just had a dream year, self-publishing two picture books in 2021 - ‘Hooroo, ta-ta, bye-bye’ and ‘My Fair Dinkum Dad’. ‘Hooroo, ta-ta, bye-bye’ is about her eldest daughter Courtney saying goodbye to all the little things in her life and realising that it’s only goodbye for now and not forever. Her second book ‘My Fair Dinkum Dad’ tells the story of her daughter’s curiosity as to why her dad wears the same blue shirt every day. “In a nutshell, my books reflect my family life and how both my daughters view the world. I observe them and watch how they see the world and the simple things in life” said Nicky to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Nicky has always had a love of writing and she has been fascinated with it since she was at school. “I’ve enjoyed writing since I was in primary school. I wrote many short stories and enjoyed writing poetry as a teenager” she reflected. “When I became a mum and saw what my two girls got up to daily, that inspired me to write about them and this is evident in my books and future books. My husband, Brad, is my rock and my motivation to achieve my goals. From the beginning, he has pushed me to succeed and has always been by my side” she continued. Her books have already been adored by many readers, both young and old, who can’t get enough of her stories. “I am so thrilled when I receive feedback and comments from parents, grandparents and other lovely people who have purchased the books; letting me know how relatable they are to them and how their son or daughter love the books so much that they read it every day. This warms my heart so much” Nicky smiled. Nicky is in the process of writing a third book and she’s just about to release a colouring book with mazes, eye spy and a find-a-word. “I have been heavily supported by the Western Sydney community, to which I am very grateful for. Can my Genes be so Bad that Migraine is Unavoidable? A small number of people suffer from a rare/severe subtype of migraine with aura (MA) called hemiplegic migraine (HM), where weakness or temporary numbness, affects one side of the body, accompanying migraine. HM is diagnosed/subdivided into: 1. Sporadic hemiplegic migraine (SHM) – no family history of HM exists 2. Familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) – 1st or 2nd-degree relative has HM ~0.01% of Europeans suffer HM. SHM (1/3 of HM cases) results from: 1. Pathogenic-variant newly arisen FHM-genes (listed below) 2. Cellular mosaicism (people with mixtures of cells with completely different genetics) 3. Other gene-transmission-mechanisms 4. Environmental factors One of 3 specific FHM gene-mutations is passed-down from parents: 1. CACNA1A (FHM type 1) leads a person’s brain cells to miss-handle calcium. 2. ATP1A2 (FHM type 2) leads to altered handling of both sodium, potassium, calcium and possibly acid by brain cells. 3. SCN1A (FHM type 3) leads to altered sodium-handling by brain cells which alters levels neurotransmitter GABA levels. All mutations, increase risk of brain-cell-hyperexcitability, cortical
spreading depression (CSD) and migraine. No other major HMcausing genes have been found and >75% of genetically tested HM sufferers, have no detectable gene mutation. HM genetic sub-types are indistinguishable although symptom-picture varies widely, even among people with the same genetic mutation. FHM has: 1. an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern (just one copy of mutated gene can cause disease). 2. a high penetrance – i.e., 70-90% of people with the mutated gene will get migraines. Nevertheless, penetrance isn’t 100% and twin studies clearly show even identical-twins can have completely different symptom-profiles. Recently, a study concluded that the ‘wide array of symptoms, severity, age of onset and frequency’ suggests that HM-patients getting severe headaches, do so from an unlikely combination of both genetic and endogenous or environmental factors. Swedish researchers similarly concluded that HM may not be caused by single-gene-mutations; but is likely an extreme-version of migraine with aura, sitting at the severe-end of the HM diseaseseverity- spectrum. They argued that a combination of environmental factors working together with rare and/or multiple-common-genevariants, conspire to produce HM migraines which suggests that even very rare and severe migraine types, have controllable environmental factors, that may significantly lower migraine risk.

2022 will be on so many fronts, social, political, religious, a year of exciting challenges. Throughout the world, there is a mass movement of people most of whom in the search for a more secure lifestyle have become victims to the growing smuggling business. Others are being forced to find relief from vicious political forces in many countries. Politics, as always in history, often comes down to so much hype and when trust is lost in the political system, movements such as the ‘far right’ raise their ugly heads. Medical science is currently coming to grips with a virus, the likes of which has no comparison in the history of disease effecting humans. One could go on enumerating the challenges that will be constant in 2022. So, what can the person who has faith in God through the life and work of Jesus the Christ do in given situations? First is to make use of God given common sense. The ‘good order’ for the individual, the family and society at large by the application of common sense. Second is the need to recognize the importance of discipline, not only in thought but in action. Just as common sense is vital, so to, is the common good and when the individual and society at large work for the common good, then much can be achieved. The life and work of the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town who recently died, is one to deeply consider. His life and work certainly added to the heritage of the life and work of Martin Luther King. Third is to have a deep conviction that life and the world at large has meaning. To the question ‘why are we here; why is the natural world as it is’, the answer is given in that all has the recognition of a transcendent reality.

You will still be seeing all the previous staff members when you visit. We now have a total of 25 staff! Wow! Cesar Cesar grew up in Miami, Florida, USA. He completed his Bachelor's Degree in Animal, Poultry and Veterinary Sciences with a concentration in Animal Nutrition, at Tuskegee University in Alabama, USA in 2009. Cesar is currently pursuing his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at the University of Sydney. He has worked as a veterinary technician for over 20 years in the USA, working in a variety of different practices. Cesar has extensive experience with a wide variety of animals, ranging from dogs, cats, horses, pocket pets, large animals, reptiles, birds, and fish. When not busy working or attending classes, Cesar enjoys scuba diving, aquaculture, reading, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. Cesar completed 2 weeks of University placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and we were so impressed, we offered him a job. Cesar began casual employment in February 2021. Ethan Ethan is a Penrith local who joined our team in December 2021. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sydney. At home, Ethan has 5 cats and 1 dog. In his free time, he enjoys bouldering, reading, and walking his dog, Harley. Sarah Sarah graduated with her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in January 2021. She joined the team at Orchard Hills in November 2021. Sarah has grown up with animals and feels like there’s a hole in her heart when she’s not around them. She currently has four cats - Calvin, Marshmallow, Sundae and Tucci, and a Staffie named Phoebe in tow. “I love being able to work with animals and help them in any capacity I can. I am continually learning and love being able to expand my knowledge of animals and veterinary nursing”. Melitta Melitta joined our team in October 2021 in the grooming department. Melitta has previously worked on a breeding thoroughbred stud managing vet visits and owns her own country clothing business (Country N Co). Melitta has 2 horses, Sensation (3yr old stock horse), Krakajac (25yr old thoroughbred) and 2 dogs, Dixie (14wk old Kelpie) and Penny (3yr old Labrador). Melitta has a loving passion for all animals every shape and size. In her spare time, she is out competing her horses in team sorting, camp drafting, local shows, and beach riding! Melitta loves coming to work as part of such an amazing team! Xinlin Xinlin grew up in Harbin, Heilongjiang China and he is
currently studying the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at the University of Sydney. Xinlin has no pets currently, as he left his geckos in China with his friends to look after. Xinlin completed 2 weeks of University placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and we were so impressed, we offered him a job. Xinlin began casual employment in January 2022. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

One Paw-Some Business! Jordan Springs’ sisters Isabella, Eva and Adeline White are our latest kidpreneurs, starting their own business, The Three Sisters Dog Sitting Business recently. “Isabella, Eva and Adeline had the idea to start a new local business on the 5th of January 2022. They created a flyer, did a local letterbox drop (in the rain - that’s how eager they were!) and got their mum to post their flyer on the Jordan Springs Community and Residents Facebook pages. They already have their first few bookings” said Craig White (Isabella, Eva, and Adeline’s Dad). They offer a cost effective, home away from home for your furry family member. The girls will love and care for your dogs as if they were their own. “They take both short and long stay bookings and only take one booking at a time to ensure your pet/s get our full attention. Mum and Dad are both home to help. We do own a groodle (Nala) and a mini schnauzer (Hercules), so any dogs they take in must not only be good with kids but also other dogs. Their clients are encouraged to bring their dogs over before securing their first booking, so we can all get to know each other. “They don’t include dog walking for safety reasons but offer a complimentary dog wash if you wish” Craig explained. Isabella (9) is the resourceful mastermind and bookkeeper. She does most of the client liaison once Dad sets up the initial meeting. They call Eva (7) their little Moana, as animals love to follow her around. They are attracted to her calm and kind nature. She really enjoys being outdoors and doing the physical work that comes with looking after pets. Adeline (3) is the fun maker in the family and gets involved in everything and is always ready to help her sisters in any way that she can. “When creating the business, the girls were looking for a Covid Safe holiday activity and wanted to buy a bearded dragon as their next pet, so they started thinking of a way to save up for it. A lot of people were wanting to go on holidays after being in lockdown for such a long time. We have a large yard so they thought they could help our neighbourhood with a safe and fun staycation for their dogs, while their owners were away” he replied. Currently, they are only servicing the Jordan Springs community, however, they will consider referrals out of the area.
