Ropes Crossing’s Amazing Show of Community Spirit When father and son Glenn and Josh Disbray found themselves homeless in a tough situation, little did they know that the people and community of Ropes Crossing would not only come together to support them, but to assist with a future that they can now look forward to thanks to a new home. Paul Abassi, Group Principal at Laing and Simmons Ropes Crossing, and his team could see the hardship that Glenn and Josh were suffering and decided to help them get their life back on track. “We created a GoFundMe account at the start of February, in the hope that we could raise funds for Glen and Josh to start again. Anzac Nurses
On Anzac Day each year, we honour and remember the brave soldiers who have fought and sometimes lost their lives to ensure the freedoms that the rest of us often take for granted. One of the least known of all Army services is the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC), who have supplied much needed care for Australian servicemen both during and after wars. The history of the RAANC dates back to the formation of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) in 1898, which originally consisted of one Lady Superintendent and 24 nurses. Their first overseas deployment was to Africa during the Boer War. They also served in Burma, India, The Persian Gulf, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France and England. They worked in some very challenging times and often horrendous conditions, trying to save lives and heal limbs, hearts and spirits without running water, electricity and adequate supplies including equipment, medicine, antibiotics and anaesthesia. In WW1, a one thousand bed hospital in Cairo, completely made of tenting without a floor covering, was staffed only by 1 Matron, 15 Sisters and 30 Staff Nurses with male medical orderlies from the Australian Army Medical Corps. Unfathomable. During WWI, more than 3,000 Australian civilian nurses volunteered for active service. 2,286 nurses served overseas, 423 served in Australia, 25 died on active service and 388 were decorated with seven Military Medals awarded to Australian Nurses for their courage under fire. In WWII, 3,477 joined the AANS, 71 of whom lost their lives and 38 became prisoners of war. There were 137 decorations, which included two George Medals in recognition of ‘acts of great bravery’. In 1948, the service was renamed as the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service. We honour and thank these pioneering women who worked so hard and contributed so much. Neighbour Day
From street parties and picnics in the park to catch-ups at the local cafe, the Jordan Springs community took part in Neighbour Day – Australia’s annual celebration of community that encourages people to connect with those who live nearby. Supported by Relationships Australia, Neighbour Day was held on Sunday 25 March. The day is recognised as an ongoing opportunity to remind people about the importance of community connection and this year focused on the importance of a supportive neighbourhood for children and young people. Jinming Pap, a resident at Jordan Springs, took part in Neighbour Day this year. “We had a wonderful time socialising and getting to know our neighbours. It was a great opportunity to meet people in the neighbourhood we hadn’t yet connected with”. Since 2016, Lendlease’s Communities business has partnered with Relationships Australia to support the people in our communities to achieve positive and respectful relationships. Bringing the Community Together The task-oriented busyness of our everyday lives keeps our to do lists full, but often prevents us from connecting with other people, even those in our own neighbourhood. Having like-minded friends that we can talk to and share experiences with makes our lives fuller, richer and a lot more fun. Every community needs that one person who works to bring people together, and Jordan Springs has Shareema Allen. Becoming a community organiser began 2 1/2 years ago. “I attended a Jordan Springs Dad’s Christmas party, where I met a group of fellow ladies with common interests” said Allen. This was the birth of the Jordan Springs Mums group. From there, many events have been organised: BBQs, a trivia day, Christmas and Halloween gatherings in the local park for the whole community and ladies only nights. Allen said that the best part for her is ‘meeting new people and seeing the community come together and support each other’. Allen and her husband Daine have been Jordan Springs residents since 2015. They have three children Brock (15), Dakota (6) and Kai (2). She is diploma trained in Early Childhood Education with 15 years’ experience. She runs her own business called Jordan Springs Creche and Babysitting and Messy Play playgroup on Friday mornings. She also helps organise events and works behind the scenes for the Blue Mountains Rugby Club, where Daine is a 3rd Division coach. Joanne Flanagan is also a Jordan Springs resident who said that Allen is “very community oriented” and has helped a lot of people. “This is what we are short of in today’s society. You don’t see a lot of neighbourhoods having get-togethers and meet ups, having a chat and making friends”. 12 months ago, Allen and her children were diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder. “I am currently doing research and raising awareness of this condition as it’s not commonly known in Australia” said Allen. Even during tough times, Shareema Allen is still reaching out to the community.

A big concern given how dry it has been lately - there is a lot of ground cover bushes and trees just across the road from houses. Neighbours raised the alarm. We helped put it out using buckets of water from our front tap. The local volunteer Bush Fire crew turned up about 20 minutes after we called. We had most of the fire out by then. Neighbours said they noticed some guy on an electric bike riding around the park earlier in the evening, and then saw him just before the fire started. Such a waste of money now for it to be replaced/damaged and cleaned up. Hundreds of kids and families use that park every day. Zucchini Pancakes With Bacon & Avocado
ingredients 150g (1 cup) self-raising flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 egg 310ml (1 1/2 cups) buttermilk 1 (about 150g) zucchini, coarsely grated Extra Virgin Olive oil spray 3 rindless bacon rashers, excess fat trimmed 250g punnet cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 small avocado, halved, stone removed, peeled, sliced 1 cup fresh basil leaves 1/2 small red onion, cut into thin wedges 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar preparation 1. Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Make a well in the centre. Whisk in the egg and buttermilk until just combined. Add the zucchini and stir to combine. 2. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spray with oil. Spoon one-quarter of the zucchini mixture into the pan. Tilt the pan to form a 13cm-diameter pancake. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until bubbles appear on the surface. Turn and cook for 3-4 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining zucchini mixture, reheating the pan between batches. 3. Meanwhile, heat a small non-stick frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook the bacon for 3-4 minutes each side or until crisp. Tear into large pieces. Combine the tomato, avocado, basil, onion, garlic and vinegar in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. After meeting with the father and son, Paul and his team brainstormed ways that they could help. When setting up the GoFundMe account, their original goal was $1,000. They have now raised an amazing $6,920! The local team then helped find a suitable property that was in their affordable price range and helped them with the application. Once approved for the home, they advertised on their social media platforms that they were taking donations on furniture and household items to help them start again in their new home. The response from residents was amazing! They hired a truck so that they could collect all the donated items and get them to Glenn and Josh’s new home. When asked why he thought the local community came together to help the Disbrays, Paul’s reply to the Jordan Springs Gazette was, “I believe that the local residents have that ‘real’ community mindset, they are all neighbours and help each other out if they need it. When Glenn and Josh broke down here, all it took was one person knowing their story to start the wave of generosity and compassion”. “I love that the local community always gives back, even when times are tough. I have never seen so much raw thoughtfulness in any community as I have here in Ropes Crossing” he concluded.

Rohan’s Love of Music Local business owner, Rohan Hotchkiss has studied music his whole life. In fact, you could say that he lives music and that it’s a part of his life. The Ropes of Ropes Crossing This month sees the Jordan Springs Gazette expand to Ropes Crossing, with the publication made available at popular pick up points; and letterbox distribution commencing in July. It is quite fitting then, that April also marks the 175th anniversary of the death of Anthony Rope, a First Fleet convict, who was memorialised in the naming of Ropes Crossing. Rope came to Australia on the Alexander, after being tried and found guilty in 1785 of stealing clothing and coin valued at 35 shillings. He was sentenced to transportation for seven years and after eight months at sea, landed at Port Jackson. A few days later, he met the woman who would become his wife, Elizabeth Pulley, also a First Fleet convict. Pulley sailed from England on the Friendship along with 20 other female convicts but was later transferred to the Prince of Wales ship. Orphaned at the age of six, she had been charged for theft several times during her teen years and in 1783 was convicted of stealing a large quantity of food and two rolls of worsted (material) and was sentenced to death by hanging. She was later given a reprieve and had her sentence commuted to transportation to Botany Bay. Anthony and Elizabeth married a few months after meeting in 1788 and their son Robert was born within the year. He was by some accounts the very first, or at least, one of the first, European babies born in the colony. The Ropes had eight children between 1788-1808. The family lived in a number of leaseholds, with Anthony having to build a new house each time they moved. In 1792, Governor Phillip gave them 70 acres at The Ponds and the title of ‘Settlers’. Unfortunately, this property had to be sold to repay a debt. According to the Rope-Pulley Family Heritage Association, ‘farming was very harsh, and the settlers were constantly deluged by floods and ravaged by fires and droughts’. There are no photos that exist of Anthony and Elizabeth, who died (1843 and 1837 respectively) before cameras were in popular use. The Ropes are buried in Castlereagh Cemetery. It was the work of Copernicus and Galileo and those who in history extended their findings and teaching that essentially gave to the discipline of Theology the concept that God became ‘homeless’. The magnitude and the intricacy of the universe has excluded the concept of ‘heaven above’ and ‘hell below’ and where is God placed within this understanding? Earth is but a ‘tiny dot of existence’ and studies over the years have struggled to give adequate answers. Many scientific schools today base their studies on what is known as the “Anthropic Principle: we see the universe the way it is because if it were different we would not be here to observe it”. This can lead to the question ‘why’ for all the reality in which we find ourselves. Alongside the absorbing studies directed to understand the mysteries of evolution there is the studies to understand the evolution of humanity. Just as much as the animal world can be seen in terms of survival, even so the history of humanity is one laden with violence of person against person and nation against nation. Yet violence aside, the majesty and mystery of life is humanity’s great impetus to “be”. Religion is something that cannot be ignored. In history it has been an avenue of enhancement, while at the same time, has
exhibited powerful forces for suffering and misery. The oldest continuous philosophy ordered into a system is Hinduism with its pantheon of Gods being the incarnations of Siva. Judaism which, over its long history developed the understanding of Jehovah. From this emerged Christianity and later Islam emerged from the cross culture of both Judaism and Christianity. Nor can one ignore the indigenous beliefs that, through history, have provided the search for understanding and meaning. Sadly, Christianity does not present a united front, and indeed all religious movements are noted for their differing schools and practices. But common to all is the appeal to ‘a book’ or a tradition of lore. But what makes Christianity ‘unique’? It is found in the execution and the resurrection of an historical person who left no written word or consistent lore. He simply gave the challenge ‘who do you say I am’. Hence it is the sharing of the historical reflections written after many years following his death that we find the material for our own reflections in giving an honest answer, which in turn generates deeper enhancement to the eternal question of “why” in observing this universe and life.

Setting Limits And Boundaries
I’m seeing a lot of stroppy three-year-olds in my work at the moment. Families are streaming in through the door with stroppy three-year-old in tow. Too many young children are ruling the roost! It’s the same story - aggression and anger from the child. This is what I have learnt in over 20 years of working with families – when a child is aggressive it usually means that there are not enough limits and boundaries, and/or they are applied inconsistently. Kids want to feel safe. Limits and boundaries provide safety. When a child is angry and aggressive, they are asking you to set a limit on that behaviour – their behaviour is saying ‘you are the parent, I am the child and I need help’. Parents don’t know what to do. They frequently don’t have a parenting plan for how to deal with behaviour. So they try many different things. They are inconsistent in their management of behaviour, their approach to the child, and between partners where there are two parents in the home. Parents don’t want to smack their kids and that’s good. What do you teach your kids when you smack them? In order to resolve conflict, I have to hit to get what I want. That’s not the sort of kid I want at my place, no thanks. So, the only other tool left in the tool kit is yelling. And that’s ineffective because kids tune you out, and they just learn to yell to try and get what they want. The thing about setting limits and boundaries is that you don’t have to be mean. As Jane Nelson said “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?” Setting limits and boundaries is about being calm, consistent, immediate, and decisive. We choose consequences that are related to the mistaken behaviour and apply them consistently, immediately and decisively. We tell the child what to do (rather than what not to do). When they are making poor choices, we tell them what they are doing wrong and what to do instead. When we give instructions, we get close, say their name, and touch them. We pay lots and lots of attention to when they are doing behaviours that we like because it encourages them to do more of that. And as I said last month, stop talking so much. Image | www.pexels.com

The second mode is the normal game without being helped. Mario Odyssey is an amazing game where you can explore an open world and find power moons to power your ship. My only complaint is with the DLC where you find balloons that people leave, however, they can hide them in unreachable places. This game gets 4.5 out of 5 stars from me. Positive Partnerships in Education It is often said that a child’s education starts at home, so why is it when our children go to school that we often feel we have relinquished all rights to input into their learning? A positive and collaborative home-school relationship is pivotal in creating a supportive environment which encourages learning. Over the years society has become more complicated and these relationships have all too often degenerated. Unfortunately, in many communities, educators and parents just do not seem to have enough time to get to know one another and establish relationships on behalf of the children. Sometimes parents feel discouraged from visiting classrooms and teachers rarely consult with families unless a child is in trouble. The result of this situation is a clear division of home and school with misunderstanding, uncertainty and a lack of mutual respect. This can ultimately lead to a vicious cycle of teachers blaming the parents and parents blaming the teachers which, of course, is a worst-case scenario but it highlights the idea that when parents and teachers are active partners in a child’s education there is more chance of success. So how do we produce a strong home-school connection that will set the stage for a child who will grow up with a love for learning? The resounding answer is clear and authentic communication. The problem, however, is that it needs to occur from both ends to be most effective. Families need to be interested, invested, available and realistic. They need to ensure they speak positively about the school, show how they value education and be willing to accept suggestions and praise. Teachers need to be approachable, open-minded, considerate and available. They must ensure they take the time to get to know the students and share their observations and understanding with families whilst showing respect and involving families in the child’s learning process. If you put these things together, it is a recipe for success which will ultimately lead to a home-school relationship conducive to wellbeing and learning for the student. Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate... lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local Veterinarian. The Veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump
may be required, and we may also need to use muscle relaxants and activated charcoal. • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.
