Llandilo Post Office recently received the award of ‘Best Post Office in the Metro West Area’ for the month of August awarded by Australia Post. A remarkable achievement for owners Afzalur Afzal and Rayhana Roma, as they only took over ownership two years ago. The award was based on customer service, income increases, merit as well as other aspects. The prize included $250 and a certificate. The local community have rallied around their beloved Post Office, no doubt contributing to the success of the business. “We’re very proud of this award. The Post Office is an integral part of the community. The community want to ensure that the Post Office stays in Llandilo” said owner Afzalur Afzal.

Penrith Council’s popular ‘By the River’ series of events are coming up, which started last month with Music by the River. All events celebrate our natural wonder – the Nepean River and are part of Council’s plan to activate the area. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the Our River Masterplan is a roadmap for how we protect and make the most of the river into the future, including connections to Penrith City Centre, enhancing its natural environment, nurturing a landscape that supports active, healthy lifestyles and celebrating its rich history and cultural values. Sunday Siestas returns on 18 October and 15 November. These markets, held at Tench Reserve between 11am and 4pm, include quality market stalls, free live music and family activities. Bring your family and friends and a picnic blanket and enjoy a spring Sunday afternoon by the Nepean River. It’s never too early to start Christmas shopping! Cinema in the Park is on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December, following the success of the inaugural event held in April. In September, Saint David’s celebrated 117 years of continuous worship of the Holy Trinity. The changes that have occurred in these years with the advancements in communication, transport health etc; exercises our wonder. Who would have thought 117 years ago that a man would walk on the moon or that in 2015 after 10 years of travel a space camera would meet Pluto at the ‘end’ of space as we currently perceive it? From the ‘horse and buggy days’ to life today, the young student looking to the future is challenged with exciting careers in science and business. Yet for all this the social problems remain: war, poverty, thieving, violence are still part and parcel of life. Why? Maybe because sin, that often maligned word, is still master in many situations. Sin is that which depreciates life, humans working against the common good. There is a beautiful statement in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer which prays ‘God desires not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn and live’. A powerful statement when conscience is not dumbed down by refusal to consider. Conscience has a major factor: the ‘moral sense’ where the rule of right conduct is the dominating factor. Directed to the person it is where change can occur for better or for worse. Often conscience is spoken of as having a ‘voice’ that dictates the sense of responsibility and obligation. But conscience has a strong negative side where it can be exhausted and stifled by habits of sin. These works towards a total depreciation of life on the part of the individual who fails to reflect: ‘turn that you may live’ Yet again, what about disease and events of nature that cause so much agony and pain? Was it not Job so many centuries ago, who cursed God because he did not understand the reality of life in which he found himself.

Even today these tragedies pass our ability to fully understand, but in themselves strangely do not lead us away from Faith in God through Jesus Christ, but rather as with Job, Faith is the utility that provides meaning to the reality of life, transporting to a glorious Hope that in the end all will be summed up in Christ. Perhaps it is true to argue that an atheist is a person who has no invisible means of support. It is in the message of Christ Jesus that we find the beautiful harmony of life, the cosmos and God: Christ does not play a part in prayer- we pray in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

However, despite the water safety campaigns and initiatives in existence, drowning remains the single greatest cause of accidental death of children under 5 in Australia, with one child drowning each week on average. We believe that swimming is for everyone, and our aim is that all local children will learn to swim, and become safer in and around every aquatic environment. Our greatest hope is to work together as a community to see the drowning statistics reduced to zero – nothing above this should be tolerated in our society. Former Australian swimming coach Laurie Lawrence shares this vision, and is now a well respected water safety ambassador since launching his Kids Alive – Do the Five community service program in 1988. The program aims to educate the public on five important steps to reduce the risk of childhood drowning – but can you name the five, and are you practising them? They are: 1. Fence the pool 2. Shut the gate 3. Teach your kids to swim – it’s great 4. Supervise – watch your mate and 5. Calling All Amateur Photographers To celebrate Biodiversity Month and National Water Week 2015, we’re running our annual Environmental Photography Competition. The competition has three categories for amateur photographers – Open (over 18 years), Youth (12-18 years) and Kids (under 12 years) and there’s some great prizes up for grabs. How much of what we know is based on what we have heard from the media or hearsay rather than from the research? » 1 in 10 children have ADHD. » ADHD is NOT bad kids or bad parents. » ADHD is real. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Just like children with autism (1 in 100 children) or Down Syndrome (1 in 800 children), children with ADHD are born with unique challenges. Children with ADHD have trouble with: attention and focus; staying still; and making good choices. The ABSOLUTE BEST treatment for ADHD is medication. Forget everything you have heard in the media about how bad the medication is for kids. Just as children with diabetes or epilepsy require medication to be well, children with ADHD require medication to get the necessary chemicals into the frontal lobes of their brain so they can function better. Nothing else, not a good diet or alternative therapies or fish oil tablets, can get those chemicals into the frontal lobes. Medication is the only thing. Taking medication helps children with ADHD to focus and pay attention. This means that they have a better chance of learning, making friends, and enjoying the opportunities that other children have. The medication for ADHD has actually been around for 80 years and advances in medical research mean that there are more choices now. Research over the past 40 years has shown that children with ADHD who do not take medication are at a higher risk when they are adults of: drug and alcohol abuse; mental health problems; dropping out of school; unemployment; incarceration; car accidents; and relationship breakdown with family and peers. The NEXT BEST treatment for ADHD is positive parenting – things like Triple P. However, positive parenting does not work unless the child is taking medication. Without the medication, the child won’t have the attention span or working memory to listen or understand. Parents who have a child with ADHD have to battle the stigma of ADHD every day. As 1 in 10 children have ADHD, this stigma leaves a lot of people (children and their families) not feeling very good about themselves, and feeling isolated and alone. The stigma prevents parents from making the best possible choices about their child’s treatment. Parenting is a tough job. Parenting a child with ADHD is a tougher job. If you know a parent who has a child with ADHD, sometimes the best advice is an ear to listen and a heart to understand. If you know a child with ADHD, they having a problem, they are not the problem NCNS and parents from the ADHD Support Group will be at Westfield Penrith (Big W end) on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of October raising awareness about ADHD. On the 16th October, we will be holding an ADHD seminar for parents wanting to know more about ADHD.

Local businesses in Jordan Springs and the wider Penrith area were last month offered free business consultations following a visit from the Small Biz Bus – an initiative by the NSW Government providing face-to-face, personalised advice and information to business owners based on individual circumstances. The Small Biz Bus offered local business owners one hour, fully subsidised consultations on any aspect of their business, including bookkeeping, marketing practices, social media and overall health checks. The Small Biz Bus was hosted at Jordan Springs as part of Lendlease’s ongoing partnership with the Western Sydney Business Centre.
This partnership provides home-based business owners access to a support network of business advisers who provide guidance and practical expertise in establishing, managing and growing their businesses. John Todd, Executive Officer, Western Sydney Business Centre, said services such as the Small Biz Bus are extremely beneficial for all businesses, especially for small business owners who can often lack confidence in certain areas. “Quite often business owners don’t realise how a few simple steps and checklist can make a large impact to the overall success of the business. This partnership with Lendlease offers local business owners real and practical advice to help them get ahead, from evaluating your business structure to HR requirements and even help with social media,” he said. Robin Hood Comes to Life at St Joseph’s
The magical world of Sherwood Forest recently came alive at St Joseph’s School, with the students hosting performances of ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’. A packed, school hall accommodated two dazzling performances that left the crowd of family, friends and teachers spellbound. The play was a delightful twist on the story of Robin Hood, with all the favourite characters including the Sheriff of Nottingham, Maid Marion, King John and of course Robin Hood and his Merry Men returning. “The students put so much hard work and dedication into this.
It was great watching them have a good time and the parents enjoying it” said Mr Tim, Musical Director. For Year 6 student Jai Bunfield playing the role of Robin Hood was a dream, “You can count on Robin to be the saviour and I loved that about him” he said. “It was actually quite fun playing the bad guy” said Haylee Whitfield, also of Year 6, who played the Sheriff of Nottingham. The performances were a big success and there’s no doubting the amazing acting talent of the students at the school.

Cranebrook local, Alysha Pearson is looking forward to the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships after successful ISA (Independent Sports Association) and CIS (Combined Independent Schools) athletics meets in the last month. The year 7 St Paul’s Grammar School student competed in 7 events at the ISA Athletics Championships despite being a throwing specialist. She came away with convincing wins in both Discus and Shot Put and set a new Discus record, despite having a “bad throwing day” by her standards. At the CIS Athletics Championship she again won the Discus and Shot Put by large margins, managing a personal best in both events and setting a new Discus record. Alysha’s focus is now on the NSW All Schools Championship, held later this month, where she will contest Shot Put, Discus and Hammer Throw. This will be her first big meet for Hammer Throw after taking up the discipline in the last month. The talented, Jamison Little Athletics athlete who is in her 11th year at the club, will then focus on qualifying for the NSW Little Athletics State Championships where she will be defending the silver medal she won in Discus at the last State Championships.
Super Hero For A Day! Last month, Lendlease and Penrith Council Playvan partnered up to deliver a Superhero Day for the community. Many local kids came along dressed as their favourite superhero to celebrate. There were a number of fun activities available on the day, including prizes for best dressed. A fantastic day was had by all!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... LLANDILO PUBLIC SCHOOL?
There’s Something for Everyone at Llandilo Public School We’ve had a busy term here at Llandilo Public School with so many events and successes. Term 3 is the ‘Festival’ term and our 3 dance groups proudly performed at the Cranebrook festival at our local high school as well as the Penrith/ Blue Mountains Dance Festival at the Joan Sutherland Centre. The Sydney Opera House was the stage for a group of our talented recorder players at the beginning of August – a wonderful evening for the families involved. On the sporting front, we had soccer and netball teams competing in the Penrith PSSA competition. Junior netballers emerged as champions of the winter comp. Students also participated in basketball and touch footy. One of the highlights of the term was a visit from the Fujieda delegation as part of the 200th Anniversary celebrations of Penrith city. Our school is uniquely the sister school of Fujieda Elementary School in Japan. We hosted an assembly and lunch for the Deputy Mayor of Fujieda City and the Director of the School Board, along with a delegation of dignitaries. They were entertained by our Year 1 students and dance groups and treated to a good ol’ sausage sizzle followed by lamingtons and pavlova. It was smiles all round as we bid them farewell. Our Stage 3 students are in regular communication with Fujieda Elementary via skype in a cultural exchange program. Our Kindergarten Orientation program is well underway with PELL (Preschool Early Learning at Llandilo). For the past 5 weeks, our future kindies have visited the school every Friday
morning to engage in familiarisation activities with our current Kindergarten teachers. It’s been great fun and is a chance to have coffee and a chat with other parents who will be new to our school next year. This program will continue up to Friday 6th November, after which, we will begin our formal orientation classroom visits with information sessions for parents. These dates are: Friday 13th November, Wednesday 18th November, Tuesday 24th November and Monday 30th November. Grief Journaling and Happiness: The Power of the Pen I’ve kept a journal since I was 14 years old, I have volumes of journals in my cupboards. I wrote through the death of my pets, my grandparents, my Dad, my children and friends. When I sit down I aim to write for 5 minutes but often end up writing for hours. I’ve always felt great after I finished writing and thought it was beneficial to my wellbeing. I always recommend to everyone to start journaling. The results are in… it’s good for you. Researchers did a study, where 100 engineers were sacked and 4 months later none of them had been reemployed. The researchers divided them into two groups. One group did nothing. The other group was asked to keep a journal, write for 20 minutes a day about all the painful emotions surrounding losing their job and the difficulties about applying for a new job. Three months later only 5% of the first group were reemployed and 26% of the other group had found jobs. Journal writing didn’t increase the quantity of interviews, it increased the quality of their job search. They drank less, felt less anger towards their old employer and 8 months later 52% were reemployed. It seemed that writing all the tough feelings helped lift the burden, whereas suppressing negative feelings is stressful. Researchers also found that people who write journals visit the doctor less. So, I’m thinking that it’s a good idea for you to start journaling now. Go out and buy yourself a beautiful book, a lovely pen and set the timer for 5 minutes and just start describing the sensations of your body to begin with and that could lead to writing about your emotions.

Cook gnocchi in a large saucepan of boiling water following packet directions. Drain. Return to pan. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until just foaming. Add the garlic and season with salt and pepper. Simmer until the butter just starts to brown. Add the oregano to the butter mixture. Cook for a further 1 minute. Pour the butter mixture over the gnocchi and shake the pan to coat.

Grease and line a 20cm square pan with baking paper, leaving plenty overhanging the sides. Place biscuits in a food processor and whiz to fine crumbs. Add melted butter, condensed milk, desiccated coconut and lemon zest, then whiz until well combined. Press the mixture into the prepared pan and chill for 2 hours or until firm. For the icing, combine icing sugar, lemon juice and remaining 1 tbs softened butter in a bowl, stirring until smooth. Spread icing over slice and sprinkle with toasted flaked coconut. Allow to set for 1 hour, then slice into 12 rectangles.
