WSI CEO Simon Hickey said the new five-year partnership would further expand the choice and flexibility available to passengers travelling to and from Sydney’s new 24-hour airport, strengthening the range of convenient travel options from public bus links, car hire, taxi, rideshare, and expansive onsite parking. “With the launch of passenger services from 25 October, we’re thrilled to announce Super Shuttle WSI’s express and direct shuttle bus services - available to passengers from the first flight,” he said. “Our focus is on making every stage of the journey as smooth and straightforward as possible, including travel to and from the airport. Passengers will be able to enjoy a great onboard experience including luggage racks, dedicated space for prams and wheelchairs, and exclusive bus bays for boarding and disembarking at the airport. “Super Shuttle WSI will provide a comfortable and convenient connection between WSI and some of Sydney’s major transport centres, no matter what time of day or night you are arriving or departing.” Services will initially be scheduled to align with arriving and departing flights, helping passengers move seamlessly between WSI and Sydney’s major commercial and transport centres. NSBC Group Chief Commercial Officer Paul Anderson said WSI passengers would benefit from the electric, low-floor bus fleet, with each bus including capacity for 37 passengers, additional standing, and space to accommodate two wheelchair users. “We are pleased to offer this highly convenient private shuttle service to passengers from when the first flights take off from WSI on October 25, aligned across WSI’s evolving flight schedule,” he said. “It’s especially great to be able to offer discounted prices for the launch of Super Shuttle WSI – including for adults, children, and families travelling together. The direct, express nature of our services will deliver passengers to the hearts of the Parramatta and Sydney CBDs, as well as Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport, with a comfortable, efficient and reliable service.” From the launch of passenger services on 25 October 2026, tickets will also be available at kiosks in and around the WSI airport terminal, offering a convenient timetable with widespread connectivity. r Image/Article: Western Sydney International Airport

Brumbies Celebrate Double Awards Success also acknowledged the contribution of the wider Brumbies community. “On behalf of the executive committee, thank you to every committee member, volunteer, coach, manager and trainer,” they said. The double recognition highlights the collective effort of the people who help keep the club running and provide opportunities for local juniors to participate in rugby league. With the 2026 season awards providing encouragement for the future, the Brumbies will look to build on their success as they prepare for another year. For information about the 2027 season, follow Glenmore Park Brumbies JRLFC on Facebook.
Glenmore Park Brumbies Junior Rugby League Football Club (JRLFC) has celebrated a major achievement after taking home two prestigious honours at the 2026 Penrith District Junior Rugby League (PDJRL) Awards in October. The Brumbies were named the 2026 Panthers Juniors Club of the Year, recognising the club’s efforts to support its members and strengthen the local rugby league community. Club Secretary Allen Bush said the award was an honour and a sign the club was moving in the right direction. “It was an honour for the Brumbies to win this award. It shows that we are heading in the right direction. We are looking after our members and the Brumbies community,” he said. “Everything we are doing is right and we will build on that for next year and the future.” The celebrations continued when Bush received the 2026 Panthers Juniors Ian Robinson Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of his commitment as a volunteer to junior sport. Bush said he was grateful to be recognised, and that winning the award was a bonus. “This means a lot to be named the Volunteer of the Year. I don’t do the work I do for recognition,” he said. “To be recognised by others, I am thankful and grateful for this. I just go out there and do it and work together with our members.” Bush has volunteered in junior sports for more than 50 years, including 18 years with the Glenmore Park Brumbies, eight of those as Club Secretary. He thanked everyone who had supported the club throughout his time with the organisation. The club’s executive committee, Sean, Chaise, Allen and Ben,

A Day of Remembrance: Honouring the Brave at Memory Park
Movember Calls on Aussies to Make a Growmitment for Men’s Health
As the nation halts for a minute of silence at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, Australians from all walks of life will recognise and honour the profound sacrifices made by our armed forces throughout history. At 11:00am on November 11, 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was renamed Remembrance Day after World War 2 to commemorate those who laid down their lives in both global conflicts. Anthony Eddie, President of the Penrith RSL sub-Branch, perfectly captured the emotion underlying this solemn ceremony. “Remembrance Day to me is a time to reflect on the many sailors, soldiers, and airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice and died fighting to protect this great nation of ours. It’s a time to reflect on the hundreds of thousands of men and women who emerged from conflict injured, both physically and mentally. It is a time to remember those that suffered in silence for a lifetime afterwards or endured contempt for their committed service. It is also a time to remember the family members, friends and community members who supported those brave Veterans through thick and thin, whilst they were away and when they came back”, Eddie stated. “Remembrance Day is a day to reflect upon the sacrifices of many so all can understand, to educate those that might not be familiar and to improve how we treat our Veterans in the future. It’s an opportunity to re-visit history, to commemorate the memories of loss and hardship, mateship during impossible times and to learn from our mistakes”, he said. “Veterans were not always treated well upon their return to Australia, and we must do better as a society in the future”. This year, the Remembrance Day service will be held at Memory Park, in Penrith. Attendees are encouraged to arrive before 10:15am for the service that is planned to conclude just after 11:00am. The service will be followed by morning tea and refreshments hosted by the sub-Branch at the Penrith RSL Club. The Penrith RSL sub-Branch, including the Auxiliary Team, are dedicated to supporting the local veteran community and their families. The sub-Branch is made of volunteers, and they are a busy bunch organising commemorations, funerals and initiatives like the ‘Guitars for Vets’ program, weekly ‘Free Cuppa and Chat’, welfare support, DVA Advocacy, home visits, and care packages. The Penrith RSL sub-Branch plays an instrumental role in keeping the spirit of service alive in our community. “We have a little over 530 sub-Branch members with consistent and energetic growth” Eddie said proudly. Amidst the formalities and ceremonies, the underlying message of gratitude and honour is clear. And as we stand in silence, honouring the brave souls who fought for our freedoms, we are reminded of the importance of unity, peace, and gratitude. ‘We Will Remember Them’, ‘Lest We Forget’. r Image Supplied by Anthony Eddie/Australian Government – Department of Veterans’ Affairs | Article: Anthony Eddie

This November, Movember is calling on Australians to Make a Growmitment, challenging mates to make a commitment together and turn good intentions into action for men’s health. Whether it’s growing a moustache, moving 60km throughout the month, hosting a fundraising event or finding another way to get involved, the message is simple: make a commitment with a mate, back each other to follow through and help change the face of men’s health. The idea draws on Movember’s origins in 2003, when two mates challenged each other to grow moustaches and inspired 30 friends to join them. More than two decades later, that same spirit of mateship remains at the heart of the movement. Movember’s Make a Growmitment campaign taps into the power of shared commitments and a little friendly peer pressure. By involving a mate, Australians can help keep each other motivated, stay accountable and make taking action for men’s health part of their plans for November. There are plenty of ways to Make a Growmitment this Movember: • Grow a Mo: Start clean-shaven on 1 November and grow a moustache throughout the month to spark conversations about men’s health. • Move 60km: Move 60km over November, representing the 60 men lost to suicide globally every hour, to support mental health and suicide prevention. • Host an event: Bring friends, family or colleagues together to fundraise and raise awareness for men’s health. • Mo Your Own Way: Take on a personal challenge that works for you, from a creative fundraiser to a goal you and your mates can tackle together. Australians can sign up individually or rally their mates, family and workmates to join them. Every commitment is an opportunity to start conversations, raise funds and help Movember fund vital men’s health projects across mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The campaign also features a series of talent collaborations, including Adult Swim’s Rick & Morty and Australian comedians Aaron Chen and John Crunkshank, who are getting involved by taking on the moustache challenge. More collaborations will roll out throughout November. Men die nearly five years earlier than women, on average, and many of the health issues contributing to this gap are preventable. Movember is working to change this by funding research, delivering health programmes and encouraging more open conversations about men’s health. This November, Australians are encouraged to make their commitment, bring a mate along and help make a difference. To Make a Growmitment and get involved, visit Movember. com.

Western Sydney’s Hidden Lakeside Gem Set To Welcome Runners For Western Sydney’s Only Marathon Western Sydney is set to showcase a very different side of the region this November, with hundreds of runners already committed to race in the inaugural Explore! Western Sydney Lakes Marathon, taking place on Saturday 21 November, 2026. With the spectacular backdrop of the Blue Mountains, the event takes runners along the picturesque lakeside setting of Western Sydney Lakes, including sections of the lakes and surrounding landscape that have never before been included as part of a running event. The result is a scenic and unexpected race experience, just moments from the heart of Western Sydney. Produced by Elite Energy, the Nowra-based company celebrated for its popular mass participation sports events including Run Huskisson, Huskisson Triathlon and Run Wollongong, Western Sydney Lakes Marathon features five popular distances - the full marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km - with the 42.2km and 21.1km courses showcasing the stunning lakeside environment and surrounding natural landscape. For Elite Energy CEO Mark Emerton, securing the venue was an exciting opportunity to create something special and unique for the running community. “When we first looked at Western Sydney Lakes, we knew we had found something special. It’s not necessarily a location people immediately associate with distance running, but once you’re there the beauty of the lakes, the open space and those incredible views are impossible to miss.
“We wanted to create an event that would surprise people an event that felt like an escape from the city without actually leaving Western Sydney. It’s a picture-perfect setting and we’re incredibly excited to share it with runners from across Western Sydney, NSW and beyond.” Taking place in late spring, all distances will feature early starts to give runners the best possible conditions and help beat any potential springtime warmth. The early start will also allow participants to experience the lakes and surrounding landscape in the cool morning light, adding to the atmosphere of race morning. For Western Sydney, this race day represents more than just running. While creating an opportunity for the broader community to benefit from a major new local sporting event, it will also bring athletes, supporters, families and visitors together to experience a unique local destination. Andrew Bondini, General Manager of Western Sydney Lakes, said, “We can’t wait to welcome runners to Western Sydney Lakes for the inaugural Western Sydney Lakes Marathon, and to see participants and spectators enjoy our trails, lakes and beaches for themselves. “It’s a real privilege to keep building on this site’s sporting legacy, from hosting rowing, canoeing and whitewater at the Sydney 2000 Olympics to now welcoming the next generation of runners, as we build on the site’s transformation into one of Western Sydney’s great recreational destinations.” Entries are open and available across all five distances. Regentville Rural Fire Brigade to Celebrate 75 Years of Service
Regentville Rural Fire Brigade will mark 75 years of protecting the community this November, celebrating a proud history of service that has grown alongside the Penrith region. The brigade, founded on November 15, 1951, will commemorate the milestone with a celebratory dinner at the Western Sydney Convention Centre. Over the past seven-and-a-half decades, Regentville has transformed from a small farming village on the outskirts of Penrith into part of a bustling urban centre. Throughout that change, the brigade has continued to adapt to the community’s evolving needs. Regentville Brigade Secretary Seth Wilmot said the organisation had expanded its capabilities beyond traditional bush firefighting to include urban and marine firefighting. He said the brigade’s growth and achievements would not have been possible without the dedication of its members, with more than 100 locals now part of the organisation. From responding to incidents in the local area to travelling further afield to assist with major emergencies, the brigade has established itself as a dependable firefighting force both locally and across NSW. Seth said some of the brigade’s most memorable experiences had come from helping people during their most difficult moments. That commitment to supporting communities in times of crisis has remained central to the brigade’s work throughout its 75-year history. The anniversary provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of generations of volunteers who have given their time and skills to protect lives, property and the local environment. Looking ahead, the brigade is also preparing for the future, with plans to recruit new members next year following what is expected to be a busy fire season. Residents interested in becoming involved are encouraged to keep an eye on the Regentville Rural Fire Brigade’s Facebook page for recruitment updates. As the brigade prepares to celebrate its diamond anniversary, its history reflects not only the changing face of the Penrith region, but also the enduring importance of local volunteers and community spirit. After 75 years of service, Regentville Rural Fire Brigade continues to look towards the future, ready to meet the challenges ahead. r Feature Article: [Cover]: Archive photo of a truck and Regentville Rural Fire Brigade member [Above] Regentville Rural Fire Brigade members | Images Supplied by Regentville Rural Fire Brigade
Some Neighbours Are Better Than Others There’s nothing quite like having good neighbours. They’re the people who offer a helping hand, share a friendly wave and understand that living alongside others means respecting privacy and getting on with their own lives. Sadly, not everyone has received the memo! Some people seem far more invested in their neighbours’ lives than their own, devoting extraordinary time and energy to watching, commenting and involving themselves in matters that have nothing to do with them. They linger nearby, monitor comings and goings and resort to council complaints over matters that somehow become their personal crusade. One has to wonder where they find the time! It seems that when a neighbour’s home outshines their own, admiration can quickly give way to resentment and an inexplicable obsession. Before long, some appoint themselves the unofficial neighbourhood watch commander, building inspector, parking patrol and social commentator, as though someone else’s property and personal life are theirs to police. Perhaps it’s worth remembering that the best neighbours are too busy enjoying their own lives to interfere in someone else’s. we want to hear YOUR stories! Do you have an amazing neighbour who has gone above and beyond? Perhaps they helped you through a tough time, surprised you with an unexpected act of kindness or simply made your street a better place to live. Send us your **GOOD NEIGHBOUR** story for the chance to be featured in an upcoming edition. If selected, you’ll receive a **$50 gift card** as our little thank you. Because good neighbours deserve recognition, and sometimes, the best stories come from just across the fence!

Cricket and Community at Glenmore Park Glenmore Park Cricket Club is gearing up for another season of cricket, community events and family fun after celebrating a major milestone and premiership success last summer. The Redbacks will field nine junior teams and five senior teams this season, continuing to bring players of all ages together through their shared love of cricket. Club Secretary Mariah Northey said one of the biggest highlights of last season was celebrating the club’s 30th anniversary and seeing the strong community spirit across all grades. From the youngest players through to first grade, club members continued to represent Glenmore Park with pride, with some also competing at representative level and in over-50s competitions. The season finished on a high, with the club’s seventh-grade side claiming a premiership under captain Munish Kapoor. “It was great to see the community spirit from our youngest players right through to our first grade,” Mariah said. The club has already kicked off its celebrations for the new season, with a successful senior season launch featuring the 20th Redbacks Cup. The Originals took home the cup, setting the scene for another season of friendly competition and club camaraderie. With weekly matches on the horizon, the Redbacks are also planning a range of activities away from the pitch, including school holiday cricket clinics and fundraising events. Mariah said the club was looking forward to bringing players and families together throughout the season, both on and off the field. Registrations for the current season have filled all available places, with the club thanking members of its cricket community for stepping up to help ensure as many children as possible could get onto the field. While there are no places available this season, prospective players and families are encouraged to keep an eye out for opportunities ahead of next winter’s and summer’s competitions. Those wanting to follow the Redbacks’ progress can check the club’s social media channels for weekly fixtures, upcoming events and match highlights. With 14 teams taking the field, Glenmore Park Cricket Club is looking forward to another season built on participation, sporting achievement and community spirit. r [Top] Nev and Chace Linford - father son duo in the senior’s 3rd grade team [Above] The Originals - winners of the 20th Redbacks Cup | Images Supplied by Glenmore Park Cricket Club

Penrith Student Takes Western Sydney Health Concerns to the National Stage
Penrith’s 2026 Young Citizen of the Year has taken her passion for healthcare advocacy from Western Sydney to Parliament House after being selected from more than 2,200 applicants for Australia’s inaugural National Youth Parliament. Penrith Anglican College student Ella Johnson was one of just 150 secondary students chosen nationally, with one participant selected to represent each federal electorate. During the fiveday program in Canberra, Ella used her adjournment speech to call for improvements to healthcare for people in Western Sydney and also contributed to debate about affordable housing. For Ella, the issue is personal. Her own experiences navigating the health system have helped shape her interest in patient voice and in how health services communicate with young people and families. “Health advocacy is something I am passionate about and I appreciated the opportunity to speak about ways to make healthcare more accessible,” Ella said. “I am passionate about speaking up for those who may not have a voice and helping to create a healthcare system where people feel heard, supported and valued.” Ella is already putting that commitment into practice as a Youth Council Member for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, working with other young people to help improve the experiences of children and families accessing healthcare services. She has also contributed to the NSW Health Website Information Refresh project, served on the judging panel for the Children’s and Young People’s Choice Awards within the Sydney
Children’s Hospitals Network and recently joined the University of Sydney SPARKY Youth Advisory Group. Reflecting on the Canberra experience, Ella said: “One of the highlights was taking part in the debates, where I was able to discuss important issues and hear a range of perspectives from young people across the country,” she said. Closer to home, Penrith City Council had already named Ella its 2026 Young Citizen of the Year in recognition of her community contribution and advocacy. Later in August, she was also one of 25 young people from across NSW recognised with an Order of Australia Association NSW Branch Youth Community Service Award. Penrith Anglican College nominated Ella for the statewide award in recognition of her sustained commitment to serving others. At a ceremony at Government House on 20 August, Ella received the award from Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, with Penrith Anglican College Principal Mrs Felicity Grima joining Ella for the occasion. “I was both honoured and humbled to receive the award,” Ella said. “Hearing the other award recipients’ stories has encouraged me to continue serving others and make a positive difference.” Ella’s wider community involvement includes six years of participation in Ronald McDonald House Charities’ Dance for Sick Kids fundraiser, fundraising for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and a range of service, wellbeing and environmental initiatives through Penrith Anglican College. “What motivates me most is the opportunity to help others,” Ella said. “I have experienced the kindness and support of many people throughout my life, and I feel privileged to be able to give back to my community and contribute in a meaningful way.” Ella also credits Penrith Anglican College with encouraging her to develop her strengths and use them in service of others. “The College has provided so many opportunities for growth, leadership and service. It has always encouraged students to look beyond ourselves, develop our strengths and use them to make a positive impact on others,” she said. Looking ahead, Ella hopes to pursue a career in healthcare and continue advocating for people who may struggle to make themselves heard. “My goal is to keep speaking up for people and look for more opportunities in the community and at school where I can be involved,” she said. r Ella Johnson with Governor Margaret Beazley | Image: Carlos Velasco

Finding the Simple Life Few people would disagree that life is hectic and that everything swirling around us brings more complexity. There never seems to be enough time for the multitude of competing demands we must juggle. Have you ever said, “If only I could simplify my life!”? Think about the spokes on a wheel and the central hub. Many people today try to simplify their lives by paring things down out at the spokes, by owning less or drawing tighter boundaries to reduce commitments and activity. But despite this intention to simplify out at the spokes, our society has seen a significant increase in anxiety, burnout, mental illness, unhappiness, loneliness, and a lack of a sense of meaning and fulfilment. Over the past decades, during this attempt to do less, the hours spent watching TV and streaming have skyrocketed. We end up doing more mindless activities that do not bring meaning, joy, vision, or fulfilment. Jesus taught that the secret to finding a powerfully simple life that blesses us with those things is not to pare things down out at the spokes, but to have a single focus or ‘why’ in at the hub. It is to focus our lives on ONE thing so noble, beautiful, true, and valuable that it is worth everything to have. The more things we attribute value to, or that become our focus or ‘why’ at the hub or in our hearts, the more complex life becomes. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to make God the single focus for your life, or the single ‘why’ at the hub. Whether or not you value God, the principle holds – the more competing ‘whys’ or things we focus our lives on at the hub, the more complex life becomes because they compete for our attention, energy, time, and money. Jesus suggested having God as our single ‘why’ or focus at the hub because He knew that this would bring us greater peace, freedom, joy, meaning, and fulfilment – the things we desire when we desire the simple life. But not everything we might choose as a focus at our hub can bring us these things.

Knowing How the Story Ends I Shouldn’t Be Alive. I love watching a television series called I Shouldn’t Be Alive. It tells the extraordinary stories of people who have survived incredibly dangerous situations. Some have become lost in the bush, others stranded on volcanic plains, while others have taken a wrong turn in the desert. As their circumstances become increasingly desperate, they begin to wonder whether they will ever make it home. Of course, as a viewer, you have a pretty good idea how the story will end. After all, the show is called I Shouldn’t Be Alive! But one of the most moving moments in each episode is when rescue finally arrives. Perhaps it’s the sound of a helicopter overhead or the headlights of a vehicle appearing in the distance. Suddenly, everything changes. Despair gives way to joy. Fear is replaced by relief. And where there was once no hope, there is now a wonderful confidence about the future. For many people, it is an overwhelming experience. It’s a beautiful picture of what Christians have in Jesus. The Bible tells us that death is not the end for those who trust in him. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus has rescued us from something far greater than any physical danger. He has rescued us from sin and judgment and opened the way to eternal life with God. And that means we can face the future with extraordinary confidence. Whatever difficulties we face today, we know how our story ends. Because Jesus is alive, you can know that you will also live if you trust him.

Glenmore Park Lost and Found Did you know that there is a group in Glenmore Park dedicated to finding lost pets and items? Glenmore Park Lost and Found was started in 2015 by resident Richard Pratsch. The Facebook group currently boasts over 1,900 members, who have joined to post photos and information about pets and items on social media. “My motivation behind starting Glenmore Park Lost and Found began as a member of local buy and sell groups. I saw so many people posting about lost pets or items and I then realised that Glenmore Park didn’t actually have any type of site dedicated only to lost and found” explained Richard to the Glenmore Gazette. Over the years, there have been many positive stories shared, particularly when beloved pets are reunited with their owners. “One situation that stands out was when Tina, a local lost her 12 month old Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo some years ago. She was desperate to find her pet and so relieved when it was found. Her reply was ‘Found. Saved by the most beautiful family. I will forever be grateful’. Moments like these are why I love this site,” said Richard. “The only way these groups work is to boost the local members. The more members seeing these posts from desperate people looked for their loved ones only increases the chances of them being reunited in a timely fashion. So, if residents are looking at joining, just search ‘Glenmore Park Lost and Found’ on Facebook and send a request” he ended. r Image: www.pexels.com

Does Exercise Improve Bone Density? If so, Which Exercises and Why
Yes, exercise improves bone density in post-menopausal women and older men. Doing the right exercises regularly is the key. Even small changes in bone density (BMD) improve bone strength substantially at sites where exercise puts stress on bone. Here are some examples. 1. 20-year-old women who did 10 x two-legged maximum vertical jumps, 8–12 seconds apart, 3 times per week for 6 months showed significantly increased BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar spine compared to controls. 2. Simple skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. 3. Five years of resistance training with a weighted vest and an average of 51.7 jumps per day, 3 times per week, from a 20.3 cm-high step improved femoral neck bone density compared with a control group in postmenopausal women aged 64.1–69.9 years. 4. Men with prostate cancer who undergo androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) usually lose significant bone mass, as testosterone helps to keep bones strong. A recent 6-month study of men on ADT showed that those who did
no special exercise lost 3.2% of lumbar bone density. A second group completing a combination of resistance and aerobic exercise also lost 2.6%, while those who completed a combination of resistance training and impact-loading exercises, such as hopping, skipping and jumping, exhibited no significant change in bone mineral density over the same time period. Clearly, high-impact exercises like jumping are highly important for bone density. Exercise activates something called the piezoelectric effect, i.e. exercise stress deforms bone collagen, causing tiny electrical charges to move from the inside to the outside surface of bone at the site of stress (the piezoelectric effect). This electrical activity attracts bone-building cells (osteoblasts), and they deposit more bone (calcium and collagen) at the site of bone stress, increasing bone density and strength. This effect is maximised by high-impact exercises: hopping, skipping and jumping. These forms of exercise, rather than simple weight training or aerobic exercise, are the ones you will need to do regularly to build bone. By building up carefully, with supervision, you’ll be surprised how easy these exercises are to do safely, even for older people.

Snake Season: Keeping Pets Safe If you follow local community pages, you may have noticed that snake sightings are becoming an almost daily occurrence across the Penrith region. Brown snakes are regularly being reported along the River Walk and around the lagoons in Jordan Springs, serving as a timely reminder that snake season is well and truly here. As temperatures rise, snakes become more active as they search for food and suitable places to shelter. For pet owners, this means taking extra care when walking dogs or allowing pets outdoors. Snakes generally prefer to avoid people and animals, but our pets don’t always give them the opportunity to slither away. Curious dogs may chase or investigate a snake, while cats can come across them while exploring or hunting. What starts as curiosity or play can quickly become a life-threatening encounter. In the Penrith region, eastern brown snakes and red-bellied black snakes are among the venomous species pet owners may encounter. Their venom affects animals in different ways. Brown snake bites can cause weakness, trembling, collapse and problems with the nervous system, while red-bellied black snake venom can damage red blood cells and may result in anaemia, weakness and dark-coloured urine. However, symptoms can vary and a bite from either species can be fatal without prompt treatment. Knowing the warning signs is important. A snake-bitten pet may develop dilated pupils, trembling, drooling, vomiting, pale gums, weakness or sudden collapse. Some animals may initially appear to recover after collapsing, only to become seriously
unwell several hours later. This apparent improvement should never be taken as a sign that everything is fine. If you believe your pet has encountered a snake, don’t wait for symptoms to develop. Seek veterinary attention immediately. Keep your pet as quiet and still as possible and minimise movement, as activity can encourage venom to spread through the body. Veterinary treatment may include initial blood testing followed by antivenom, intravenous fluids, oxygen or other supportive care, together with close monitoring in hospital. When the type of snake is unknown, treatment may involve using a combination of antivenoms. Treatment can be costly and, even with intensive veterinary care, complications such as kidney damage and other serious conditions can occur. Prevention is also important. Keep grass and vegetation around your property maintained, remove potential hiding places where possible, and supervise pets when they are outside. Take particular care around long grass, bushland, waterways, lagoons and areas where snakes have recently been reported. If your pet has chased, caught or played with a snake — even if you cannot see an obvious bite and your pet seems perfectly normal — treat it as an emergency and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Discovering Blue Hills Wetlands
Tucked away on Blue Hills Drive in Glenmore Park, Blue Hills Wetlands is a hidden gem that feels like an oasis in the middle of suburbia. Home to local flora and fauna, this tranquil space offers a peaceful escape from the daily rush. The wetlands won the 2002 UDIA Environmental Award and continue to be a favourite among locals. The large body of water is surrounded by lush parklands, walking tracks, boardwalks, and viewing piers. The 1.12km loop is popular for walking, running, and nature spotting—especially during spring and summer. Ideal for families and friends, the area includes picnic spots, bushwalking trails, and birdwatching opportunities. Children especially love searching for the famous sandstone sculptures along the track, which represent native animals. The giant frog sculpture, in particular, has become a beloved meeting point and local icon. During the pandemic, the Wetlands brought joy to the community with painted rocks and hidden “Bluey and Friends” characters tucked into the trees, bringing smiles to young visitors on daily walks. In 2024, the Wetlands hosted the Penrith City Council ‘Trees for Dad’ event, where locals from Penrith and beyond came together to plant native trees in honour of fathers and father figures for Father’s Day. Each tree was accompanied by a handwritten message, making the event both personal and memorable. As the plants bloom in the warmer months, Blue Hills Wetlands transforms into a vibrant, living landscape. Whether you’re there for exercise, quiet reflection, or to spot a black swan or pelican gliding through the water, it’s a space that reconnects you with nature in the heart of the community. Blue Hills Wetlands truly is one of Glenmore Park’s most peaceful and picturesque places to visit. r A place of beauty | Images: District Gazette

November has a way of changing the rhythm of local life. The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up and there is a definite feeling that Christmas is just around the corner. Weekends seem to fill themselves, calendars become busier and everyone starts thinking about celebrations, end of year plans and what still needs to be ticked off the list. It is also a great time to look around our own neighbourhoods and support the people who help make them thrive. Whether it is grabbing a coffee locally, shopping with an independent business, booking a service with someone from the area or simply recommending a local business to a friend, those small choices can make a real difference. And then there are neighbours. The good ones make a neighbourhood feel like a community. The ones who lend a hand, keep an eye out, share a friendly hello and occasionally even return the bin without being asked. Every neighbourhood has its characters, but thankfully the good ones tend to make up for the occasional rogue resident! At District Gazette, we love bringing those local stories to our readers and celebrating what makes our communities special. “Kindness is the one thing that makes a neighbourhood feel like home.”
