Charges Laid Over Alleged Online Grooming – Strike Force Trawler

A Western Sydney man has been charged with online grooming offences following an investigation by the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad’s Child Exploitation Investigation Unit (CEIU). In July 2021, investigators from the CEIU’s Strike Force Trawler began engaging online with a man from Glenmore Park in Sydney’s west. Police will allege in court that the man believed he was speaking with a 14-yearold girl and engaged in sexually explicit conversations about acts he wished to perform with the child. Following extensive inquiries, Strike Force Trawler detectives arrested a 37-year-old man at a home Glenmore Park about 6.40pm Thursday 10 February 2022. Detectives subsequently executed a search warrant at the home and at a business at South Penrith, where they seized electronic items, which will be subject to further extensive examination. The Glenmore Park man was taken to St Marys Police Station and charged with two counts of use carriage service to send indecent material to person under 16 and use carriage service to groom under 16 years for sex. He was refused bail and appeared at Penrith Local Court on Friday 11 February 2022. Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Detective Acting Superintendent Gordon Arbinja, said the arrest should serve as a warning to anyone participating in online grooming. “Police will allege in court that this man believed he could engage in sexual activity with a 14-year-old child,” Det A/ Supt Arbinja said. “Our priority is to protect children from online predators, and we will continue to do everything in our power to track them down. “This is also another reminder for

parents and carers to be aware of what their children are doing on the internet and especially who they are speaking with,” Det A/Supt Arbinja said. Strike Force Trawler is an ongoing investigation by the CEIU into the sexual abuse and exploitation of children facilitated through the internet and related telecommunications devices. Regular covert online investigations are conducted by the CEIU; and police in NSW work closely with their law-enforcement colleagues interstate and overseas. The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect. Woman Charged After Car Crashes Into House – Glenmore Park

A woman has been charged after allegedly crashing into a house in Sydney’s west. About 11.30pm (Friday 29 January 2022), emergency services were called to Muru Drive, Glenmore Park, after a Suburu Forester had crashed into a home, causing extensive damage. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle – a 38-year-old woman – was uninjured. When officers attempted to speak with the woman, she allegedly became aggressive and verbally abusive. She subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result. The woman was arrested and taken to St Marys Police Station, where she allegedly refused to undergo a secondary breath analysis. She was charged with drive vehicle under influence of alcohol, resist officer in execution of duty, refuse or fail to submit to breath analysis, use offensive

The Regentville community are one of more than 50 across NSW to benefit from funding to commemorate veterans across the state. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott have announced Regentville Public School would receive $1,000 from the latest round of the Anzac Community Grants Program. “More than $56,000 will be provided to a range of projects that commemorate and educate NSW communities about the service and sacrifices of current and former military servicemen and servicewomen,” Mr Elliott said. “Some of these great projects and initiatives, including the one in Mulgoa recognise Australia’s war service history, educate a new generation and support the wellbeing of the NSW veteran community.” Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies thanked the community for honouring the service of NSW veterans. “I would like to acknowledge Regentville Public School for their commitment to the veterans of Mulgoa, especially for highlighting the often forgotten service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and allowing our community to honour their service.” Mrs Davies said. “Our community today is thankful for the sacrifices made by all of our current serving members and our service men and women from over a century of service.” Projects that support activities benefiting the NSW veteran community have also received funding. Over 2 Decades of Martial Arts in Glenmore Park

Master Dave Adlam has been working with the community in Glenmore Park and the greater Nepean region through his martial arts classes for over 20 years. Since 2001, he has welcomed over 1,200 students into his Taekwondo, Korean Sword and Tai Chi Kung Fu classes, coaching many through to their black belt certification and beyond. Dave has trained in martial arts for most of his adult life and spent many years training in Taekwondo in the Blue Mountains, before opening his own school in Glenmore Park. He has competed and refereed at state and national level and coached many students to medals at state competitions over the years. After many years of working with primary schools in the Nepean region, Dave has developed a martial arts syllabus that helps students be their best selves. From 5-year-olds to adults, the emphasis throughout his classes is on respect – for yourself, for the people you train with, for your teacher and your family. While fitness, strength, speed, and self-defence are all important aspects of martial arts training, Dave firmly believes that respect and confidence are the major benefits for students. After a lengthy recess due to Covid-19 restrictions, Dave’s club, Nepean Martial Arts, now has classes in Orchard Hills each week. New Book Club Almost Here

If you’re a local who enjoys reading and would like to join a book club, then Glenmore Park resident Melita Stirling may just be able to help. Melita, an avid reader, would like to bring the community together and create a new book club. “I would like to start a local book club. As I’m new to the area, it’s a great way to meet new people, read books and drink wine” said Melita. A book club generally consists of a group of people who read and talk about books that are agreed upon or a certain topic. “I have previously been a part of a book club. They are fantastic as they create opportunities where you end up reading books you wouldn’t normally read. Different ideas, genres, and styles. And, of course, you get to meet new friends. Men and women are welcome to join” she explained. Melita is currently looking to organise books to be read and hopes to do this with consultation from local libraries. This will be followed by creating a Facebook group and discussing how it should be run. “I’d like to think that we have the book club by mid-March” she smiled. Toby told me how he had struggled with mental illness, but as he focussed his life on God, the dark places in his mind were filled with light. He spoke about his trust for God, and it was evident his spirit was alive and hopeful even now as COVID unsettles everything. Toby’s story is that light and hope came when he focussed his life on God. What’s your story? Not all stories bring happiness, hope and freedom. Believe it or not, Australian politics at election time has something to teach us about having a story that works. Without charismatic leaders with big, larger than life visions for Australia, everything seems fragmented. Bitsy. “We said…they said.” Budgets. Scandals. Knit picking. Today one thing. Tomorrow another. Like light refracted across a thousand little mundane things. There is no grand sense of purpose or focus. No dream. No inspiration. No magnificent centre. No light or lift. The great challenge of having a story that works is to find a way to focus our lives on something that brings light, hope and life to us. Toby made the story about Jesus in the Bible his own story. That story is about God being with us in Jesus. That through Jesus, he sent us his Spirit to help us and bring us the love and Light of God. It’s quite a story, but as Toby discovered, it’s only when you make it your own story and start to trust God and focus your life on him that you have a story of light and liberation to tell. Pendragons Celebrate 20 Years on the Water

This year, Pendragons Dragon Boat Club will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary. The much-loved local club, which was founded in 2002, currently has 45 members and hopes to grow. Dragon Boat Racing is a water sport with over 63 teams in New South Wales, with 3,000+ members. In a ‘normal’ season, Dragon Boat NSW and their regional areas run several regattas, where clubs can race against each other. “The Dragon Boat community is inclusive for anyone, although our Club is looking for people from the age of 30 and over. It is great for groups of friends and couples. You will make some new friends and it will keep you fit. You can be competitive to any level that you aspire to, whether it’s just friendship and fun, club racing and then even up to State and World representation if you want. Many people are “bitten” by this sport once they get involved” explained Jane Howard of Pendragons Dragon Boat Club. “We also want to showcase Penrith through our waterways – the Sydney International Regatta Centre and the Nepean River” she added. Pendragons Dragon Boat Club train at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) and the Nepean River in Penrith. Saturday mornings at 8:45am are their ‘Come and Try’ days. They also have another 3 training sessions available for paddlers each week. “Coming out of the last 2 years of the pandemic, we never gave up with weekly online cardio/fitness and eventually coffee sessions throughout the lockdowns. We moved to COVID safe paddling with a plan as restrictions were lifted” Jane said. Now that they are competing back in regattas, the club had an amazing result at the Dobroyd Regatta in January. They achieved 1st in the Women’s 200m and the 1k Races. “What we enjoy most about Dragon Boat Racing is the people, camaraderie and fun! Once involved, you will want to keep going. Just being on the water at either SIRC or the Nepean River – after a day’s work, you can focus on the paddling and the amazing waterways. It helps you to relax. You meet so many likeminded people across New South Wales at the regattas and everyone is fantastic. Being competitive and racing is exciting too” smiled Jane. How To Help Your Child Solve Problems Growing up is about learning foundational skills for life and few skills are more important than problem solving. It may be tempting to “jump in” and solve problems for children, but whenever possible it’s fantastic to involve children in solving their own problems. It takes five steps to solve a problem: 1. Identify the problem 2. Think of possible solutions 3. Consider the costs and benefits of potential solutions 4. Implement your plan 5. Evaluate to see if the problem has been resolved When children are little, you can help by giving them the words to identify the problem, e.g. “You want to finish the puzzle, but there’s a piece missing”. Instead of directing children to try your solution, prompt children to think of their own possible solutions with a question like, “what could we do about this?” Younger children may need help to think of possible solutions. You can begin by offering two ideas. “Perhaps we could look for the piece or try a different puzzle?” This is an effective ageappropriate way to give younger children choice in how they respond a problem. When children are older, we can support more open-ended brain storming. Children may want to immediately try the first solution that comes to mind. We can prompt children to think ahead and consider consequences with a simple question like, “I wonder what would happen if we tried that?” Maintain curiosity and resist judgment. Remember that the point of such a question is to support children to stop and think before acting. If a child’s solution doesn’t work out, we can support resilience. It is natural to feel frustrated or disappointed when we don’t succeed at something, but problem solving is all about trying again. It may be helpful to offer to work together to figure out what went wrong. When children succeed in solving their own problems, they feel more confident and in control of their lives. These positive experiences support greater wellbeing and relationships across the lifespan.

Sunbird Terrace and Oriole Street Playspaces Upgraded Penrith City Council has upgraded a further five playspaces across the City, as part of its commitment to provide quality playspaces for the community. Sunbird Terrace, Oriole Street, Leonay Parade Reserve, Burcher Park, and Robinson Park playspaces have all been renewed with new play equipment, surface upgrades, additional seating, shade sails, tree planting and landscaping. Council is upgrading 40 playspaces over a five-year period between 2019-2024. Six playspaces were completed last year including Outlook Avenue, Sales Park, Bunyarra Reserve, The Carriageway, Ironbark Reserve and Brian King Park. The Sunbird Terrace playspace upgrades include new play equipment, additional bench seating and landscaping. The Oriole Street playspace upgrades include new play equipment, bench seating, a new accessible picnic setting, a new shade sail and landscaping. They are all ready to be enjoyed by the community. This upgrade was funded by Penrith City Council as part of their ongoing commitment to provide quality playspaces for the community. Putting Smiles Back on Faces

The entertainment industry is coming back. Audiences are filling venues and stages are coming alive. It’s a welcome return from the pandemic, which has devastated the industry the last couple of years. For Glenmore Park Comedian Rob Andrews, it’s an opportunity to put smiles back on faces once again. Andrews has returned with a host of gigs, including a spot at the Sydney Fringe Festival Sideshow and he has his own global comedy contest, ‘Larrikins Worldwide’. He appeared at Comedy @ The Joan in Penrith, where he shared the stage with five other comics on the Sydney comedy scene last month. This was followed up by his solo show, “Shank Yourself Thin”, at the Sydney Fringe Festival Sideshow at The Rocks. Rob also runs his own global comedy contest, ‘Larrikins Worldwide’. The online contest supports Soldier On. Soldier On is a charity and fully integrated support services provider for members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and their families. “I have been doing stand-up comedy for eight years. I was a show-off growing up and loved performing, so it seemed a natural fit” Rob said to the Glenmore Gazette. “I idolised Billy Connolly and still believe he’s probably the best storyteller to have lived” he continued. When on the road, Rob appears on showcases all over Sydney and across regional New South Wales. He enjoys life as a Comedian and the way in which it brings people together. “I like the feeling of shared experiences with an audience. That for a moment at least, someone ‘gets’ the strange things that happen in our everyday lives and we can laugh together. I think comedy unites people in that way” Rob reflected. Sew Popular! The once popular pastime of dressmaking is making a resurgence. The art of making clothes for women and girls is at an all time high, thanks to technology and an interest in hobbies around the home. Glenmore Park Dressmaker, Joanne Kennair of Kennairy Nest, is excited about its revival. “It’s definitely becoming more popular. I think there’s been a shift to rediscovering old pastimes largely through social media and online learning platforms. There’s a vast sewing community across the world sharing tips and ideas, instructional videos, and even downloadable patterns so more people are discovering the joy of sewing” said Joanne to the Glenmore Gazette. “I also think a lot of people are wanting to do things that are constructive at home, especially through lockdown with the kids, and it’s just so easy to get involved nowadays” she added. Joanne’s own interest in dressmaking began almost 20 years ago, when she started altering her own clothes and repurposing outfits to give them new life. “The inspiration to take up dressmaking came from losing a close loved one at an early age. I recall wanting to do something special in their memory. The perfect opportunity arose at school. I was drawn to textiles (sewing) and ambitiously took on my first ever project which was to design and create a rag doll and dress. I still have her to this day” explained Joanne. She learnt the basics at school but was gifted a more advanced second-hand machine and overlocker, with which she got creative through self-learning. The original machines are still in operation in her studio, along with some newer additions. Joanne encourages anyone wanting to take up dressmaking. “Absolutely give it a go! You only need a few basics to get started and there are many fun beginner projects for all ages”. The MRI or CT of your back shows Aortic Calcification – What Does This Mean? On these reports, radiologists frequently report “calcification of the abdominal aorta” as an incidental finding, especially in people over 50. The patient is often unaware that this finding has been made nor of its importance. It means patient’s major arteries are losing their normal elasticity, turning into bone. Research shows that calcification of arterial walls truly ‘resembles bone formation’, with the same cells, proteins, cell-cell communication molecules used in bones. Studies demonstrate the presence bone forming cells and bone resorbing cells in vessel walls, new bone matrix proteins in the arterial wall, allowing crystallisation of calcium. In severe cases, fully formed bone is seen. Such ‘cardiovascular calcification’ is a systemic disease, and is: 1. A marker of generalized vascular disease 2. Significantly associated with raised blood pressure (systolic) and (pulse) 3. A likely contributor to calcium loss from bone 4. An independent predictor of cardiovascular events such as: a. heart attack, stroke, b. bypass surgery, c. balloon angioplasty, d. stent placement, e. and all-cause mortality in both cardiovascular and renal patients. A ‘Coronary Calcium Scan’ measures calcification of heart arteries. People with a calcium score over 400 are almost 15 times more likely to have cardiovascular disease than people with uncalcified

arteries. A 2004 double-blind placebo-controlled study looked at 181 postmenopausal women divided into three groups, who were given daily for three years either: 1. a placebo 2. minerals plus Vit D (500 mg calcium, 10 mg zinc, 150 mg magnesium 8 μg vitamin D3) 3. minerals plus Vit D, plus 1000 µg vitamin K1 After three years, the placebo and minerals plus vitamin D groups had worse arterial stiffness and higher pulse pressure. However, arteries of group receiving vitamin-K remained flexible (uncalcified), their pulse pressure normal. Vitamin K is found in some greens and fermented foods and is very important for maintaining cardiovascular as well as bone and dental health. Yet most patients attending the clinic have never heard of vitamin K, nor which foods are good sources. Most will not be getting enough. League Legends Get Behind Brumbies Glenmore Park Brumbies JRLFC will be holding their first major fundraiser for the season this month, with their Sportsmans Luncheon. The Sportsmans Luncheon will be held on Friday 4th March at the Jamison Hotel in Penrith. The MC for the event will be Anthony Maroon from Triple M. Joining him will be rugby league legends Andrew Johns (Newcastle Knights, New South Wales Blues and Australian Kangaroos) and James Graham (St George Illawarra Dragons, Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs and Great Britain Lions). Tickets are $130 each or $1,200 a table. With limited numbers remaining, it is sure to sell out. The fundraiser begins at 12:00pm. It is an Over 18’s event. Tickets include a drinks package and buffet lunch. There will be a memorabilia auction held on the day. Andrew Johns and James Graham will be sharing their insights with

attendees about their lives on and off the footy field.
