Local Athletes Shine at State Relay Championships Little Athletics NSW State Relay Championships were held last month in Western Sydney. It was the largest event on the Little Athletics NSW calendar in terms of competitors, with many local junior (U8 to U11) and senior (U12 to U17) athletes competing in relay events as well as Shot/Discus and Long Jump/High Jump. Local club, Jamison Little Athletics, was well represented competing in over 12 events. The Under 9 and Under 14 teams both walked away with medals in the 4 x 100m relays, while the rest of the sprint relay teams finished in the top 8. The Boys Under 8 – 11 Middle Distance Relay and the Under 10 Shot/ Discus teams placed 8th and 9th respectively. The club officials were extremely proud of all athletes that participated across all events. “I was honoured to represent Jamison Athletics at State Relays along with my team mates. we were very proud of ourselves in taking home the Bronze medal” said Glenmore Park athlete and Under 14 team member, Brooke Bailey. FROM FROMTHE THEEDITOR EDITOR Here we are, our last publication for 2015. Someone once told me, that as we get older, each year passes by faster. The reasoning said to be behind this is mathematically based , in that the older you become, each year represents a smaller and smaller portion of your life. When you are ONE, a year is your whole life , whilst when you are 40, one year is only a small fraction of your life (1/40th)and each year seems to pass faster. An interesting, possibly useless fact! We have plenty more interesting stories to read in this month's edition. Stories about sports, success, schools and swimming! A very active and educational month indeed. Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones and those near and dear. Spare a thought for those that are entering this Festive Season with emptiness and a heavy heart, whether it’s the first year or a repeat of many without that special someone, the pain seems to remain the same. Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. Enjoy your Community News and Merry Christmas from US to YOU!

Glenmore Park’s Tahlia Tupaea was recently named as the ‘Female Player of the Year’ at Basketball NSW’s Presentation Night, in recognition of her all-round performances for Penrith, the Flames and Australia. Tahlia was also subsequently named as the WNBL’s Player of the Week and later announced in the WNBL’s Team of the Week. Since debuting with the Flames at 15, Tahlia has had a big year in the WNBL for the 2015-16 Season. She scored a career high 29 points against the Melbourne Boomers in Round 3. After Round 10, Tahlia had another strong performance for the Flames, scoring 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, coming away with a 94-69 win against equal leaders South East Queensland. Tahlia’s highlights have also included a bronze medal with the Australian Under 19 Women’s Team in 2013 (Lithuania) and 2015 (Russia) World Championships for Women. Other Australian selections include the Australian Under 17 Women’s team at the 2013 Oceania Championships (Melbourne), 2014 Oceania Championships (Fiji) and 2014 Under 17 World Championships for Women (Czech Republic).

No Room? In 1897, the artist Luc-Olivier Merson completed a dramatic painting with the title “Arrival at Bethlehem.” The painting showed a very pregnant Mary sitting on a donkey, while her husband Joseph, vainly tried to find accommodation for his wife. Yet, despite Mary’s condition, no room could be found for her to give birth to her child. This painting has come to represent one of the saddest aspects of the coming of Jesus into our world, that just as it was in the first century, so too today, people will not make room for Jesus in their lives. Perhaps there can be no greater tragedy! Especially, when we consider what the writers in the Bible say about the coming of Jesus. For example, Matthew records how an angel announces to Joseph that his wife Mary will “give birth to a son...Jesus...who will save his people from their sins.” Luke tells us of “good news that will cause great joy for all people...a Saviour has been born...Christ the Lord. Then John, in probably one of the most well known Bible verses, declares, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

There is an exciting inaugural event coming up in Penrith and with summer approaching it is a great opportunity for everyone to be involved! Dive In Swim Club is a small but enthusiastic local Penrith club supporting junior swimmers to achieve their potential. Whether a child is able to swim dog paddle with floatation, any stroke for 12.5 metres unaided or swim a 200 metre medley event. Located at 122 Blaikie Rd Penrith (only 5 minutes from Glenmore Park), Dive In Swim Club has been lucky in being selected for the Junior Dolphins Program by NSW Swimming. This special pilot program assists junior swimmers in achieving their goals. Soul Matters: The Soul-benefits of Christmas What does Christmas have to do with our wellbeing? On some level the fun things we do at Christmas lift our soul and make us feel good. We spend time off work, give and receive gifts, eat delicious food we wouldn’t normally bother to prepare, sing carols, and spend time with people we love. Our soul is lifted, and temporarily we might escape the real issues in our lives. Sometimes we need to escape and just have a good time. But the real soul-benefits from Christmas are actually found in the face of the real issues in our lives. I mean the things we struggle with in our souls that we might not reveal to others. For example, sometimes we fail and feel guilty or shamed. We might be struggling to like ourselves. Our dreams may have gone pear-shaped and we just feel like crying. Things might be happening with our kids or our finances that leave our souls threadbare and barely coping. We might have lost a loved one or facing serious illness and be feeling that life is fragile. Perhaps work is unfulfilling and we are struggling to see the point of life. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ who, the Bible teaches, came to help us with such issues – to deal with our guilt and shame, our fears, our low view of ourselves, and our despair. Through Him we discover God loves us deeply, wants to forgive us, and isn’t out to get us - we can come as we are and be a friend of God. His vision is for our lives to be filled with joy and peace.

FODULW\DFDGHPLFFRDFKLQJ#JPDLO FRP Glenmore Park High School recently welcomed its first free breakfast, an initiative started by Justin Corbett, the School Chaplain. The initiative was born from Justin’s research into the student’s breakfast eating habits. “Each day, we have 870 students coming to school with little in their stomachs. We know if the food isn’t in their stomachs, the fuel isn’t in their brains to learn everything they can” said Justin. During Term 3, Justin surveyed all students at the school from Year 7 to Year 10 on their breakfast habits and found some interesting results:. 44% eat breakfast 3 days a week or less, 16% don't eat breakfast at all, 38% aren't eating a nutritious breakfast (consisting of cereal, toast or fruit), 81% would eat breakfast if it were offered free at school. “As you can see, these numbers are quite high and not favorable. Therefore, I’ve organised a free breakfast to run each week to provide for student’s needs and allow them the opportunity to get the most out of their school day” explained Justin. The breakfast supplies have been donated to the school, including Kellogg’s, Westcare Community Services and Woolworths Glenmore Park, while the school P&C have donated the week-to-week running costs including spreads and butter. What Have I Been Talking With Parents About This Past Month? A lot of parents have been very interested to know how they can determine whether the consequences they are giving their child’s mistaken behaviour are fair and reasonable, and designed to address the behaviour. First of all, consequences need to be related to the mistaken behaviour. Sometimes this can be tricky. But if the child has been jumping on the lounge, then taking away the soccer game on Saturday doesn’t make sense. The consequence is not related to the behaviour. A more appropriate consequence is allowing the child to sit on the floor for a little while. I use a checklist… • Is it positive? • Am I guiding and educating my child? • Am I teaching my child new skills and behaviours? • Will it maintain our relationship? I will give you a few scenarios, to see how this works. Scenario 1 A mother told me once how her parent would rip up her homework if she made one mistake. She would then have to do the homework all over again. What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this meet? Scenario 2 A mother told me how her young child was fussing at the dinner table. The mother calmly put the child’s plate to the side, and calmly told her child that she would return the dinner when the child could sit and be calm. The child was able to settle herself quickly and the mother returned the dinner saying “thank you for sitting so calmly, you are able to eat your dinner better when you sit still”. What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this consequence meet? You don’t have to be mean to your child for them to know better and do better. “Where did we ever get the idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?”Jane Nelson

Year One Students Tackle The BIG Issues! Dive in this Summer!

Last month, Year One students from Glenmore Park Public School held a discussion panel regarding Glenmore Park traffic. Classes 1D, 1N, 1O and 1W had been working on a transport unit in their library lessons. Whilst looking at traffic in the local area, they reached out to the community via surveys and social media, with the assistance of Teacher, Laura Curran. “The aim was to discuss contributing factors and possible solutions to the traffic congestion in Glenmore Park”, said Laura. “The students conducted a survey via Social Media, which received a phenomenal number of views, and solid responses in a short period of time.” Members from the local community were then invited to join the discussion panel. Guests included Tanya Davies MP - Member for Mulgoa, Adam Wilkinson - Engineering Services Manager at Penrith Council, Catherine Waerner - Road Safety Officer at Penrith Council and Belinda Sanders - Managing Editor of the Glenmore Gazette. The Year One students presented their research and survey results into traffic congestion in Glenmore Park to the panel. Each member on the panel were asked questions such as: • Do you think traffic lights would make the traffic at Mulgoa Rd go faster? • Why were Glenmore Park roads designed to only have two main exits? • Are there any other ways that we could reduce the number of cars in Glenmore Park? • Kids at Glenmore Park like to ride their bikes to get around quickly when we are playing with our friends. Is this a safe way to travel? The students were pleased with the answers given, providing them with further insight into the traffic issues facing the Glenmore Park community and how they can make their voices heard. As a final touch, the Year One students gifted each member from the discussion panel with a Glenmore Park Public School teaspoon. The team at the Glenmore Gazette would also like to thank the students for their handwritten letters of gratitude. It was a successful and highly informative day for all involved, with special commendations to the students!
Dive In Swimming Academy is well known for its high level of customer service and ability to meet the needs of swimmers. The team led by Owners Brett & Keryn Daley have extensive swimming knowledge and personal life skills as parents of four children. With one child diagnosed many years ago with Asperger’s Syndrome and a second child currently undergoing evaluation of Autism Spectrum this family is very much in touch with the challenges facing other families on a daily basis. The team at Dive In are continually improving their skills and awareness of children’s behaviour. Freeze overnight or until firm. Stand pudding at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften. Turn out onto a plate. Carefully peel away wrap. Drizzle with Ice Magic. Top with sprinkles and cachous. Diagnosis Facet Joint Disease – Not a Sentence for Eternal Pain I often see facet joint arthritis on scan reports in clinic. According to some research between 15-45% of neck pain, 48% of thoracic pain and 54-67% lower back pain can be attributed to facet joint arthritis, while pain may also be referred to areas such as the head, arms, chest wall, buttocks and legs.1 So what are facet joints and why might arthritis cause pain? The picture below shows that individual vertebra are joined to each other by two types of joints: a disc joint; and 2 facet joints. Facet joints take only a small amount of your bodyweight. Their main job is to guide & limit movement of spine. They prevent excessive rotation & forward bending, and protect vertebrae from sheer (forward-pulling) forces. Facet joints have a good nerve supply and, if they become inflamed due to degenerative changes associated with the wear and tear of age, pain can result. But which type of back pain is actually due to facet joints? Very careful research on back pain sufferers showed that it was impossible to find ‘clinically’ any ‘typical pattern’ of pain referral due to facet joint arthritis.2 Facet joints ‘can’ be established as the source of some chronic back pain but only via a very complex procedure called a diagnostic block. Otherwise it’s difficult to say whether facet joint arthritis is the source of a person’s back pain or not. The best we can do is say ‘maybe’! Although anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed as first line treatment when facet joint disease is suspected3, radiofrequency neurotomy (cutting the nerve to the joint) or a lumbar facet joint nerve block (anaesthetic injection) are currently the only medically validated treatments for true facet joint pain4 . Importantly, both the diagnosis & the validated treatments are involved & complex, very invasive & not without risk. Even when anti inflammatory drugs have failed, many people with facet joint arthritis and back pain typically respond well to muscle elongation therapy. Specific manual therapy techniques & dry needling, can reduce pain & inflammation, and often remove the need for ongoing medications. Finding Meaning in the Holidays and Christmas The holidays and Christmas are a time to take a good look around you. They are about finding something spiritual and wonderful about yourself, your life, and the people who fill it and make it special. Not to just give thanks or show appreciation through some materialistic and commercial sense, but to understand that you have a lot. Despite everything, you are alive, relatively well, and have a life filled with people that love you. Yes, you may not realize it or even believe it to be true, but it is nonetheless. You may feel unloveable, unloved, unhappy, stressed out. But those are the simple untruths we tell ourselves every day. The frequency of the telling doesn’t make them come true. I have no magical answers, no words of wisdom or insight into how you can get to a point in your life where you can feel again- feel true to yourself, feel happiness at the life that you’ve chosen. Except this — that life is a choice we make every single day that we’re alive. How we react and interact with others, the types of relationships we choose to have with our families and friends, the choices of careers, education, and loved ones. These are all conscious choices we make. What we value or don’t value. Choosing to pursue even more materialism in an already materialistic world. It’s your choice. The world of you is open to your own exploration. This holiday season, while celebrating the special joys of the world; take a moment to celebrate the special joys of you. Because the real secret of the holidays and Christmas is that the love and joy of the season is about the love and joy we can choose to share with one another. Glenmore Park Woman Charged with Pervert Course of Justice A woman who claimed to have been tied up and assaulted at Glenmore Park earlier this month, has been charged with perverting the course of justice. Police from Penrith Local Area Command initiated an investigation in the early hours of Wednesday 4 November 2015, after a 33-year-old woman told them she’d been attacked in her home. The woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to Nepean Hospital. Strike Force Ayre was formed to investigate the claims, comprising detectives from Penrith Local Area Command and the Sex Crimes Squad. Strike Force Ayre detectives arrested the woman at a home in Glenmore Park (Monday 16 November 2015), and took her to Penrith Police Station. She was charged with: • Pervert the course of justice • Make false accusation, and • Public mischief. More Parking to Help Christmas Business The lead up to Christmas is a lift for the local economy and shoppers too with Penrith Council boosting the number of temporary parking spaces around Penrith’s City Centre for the busy Christmas period. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said Council will provide about 200 extra parking spaces within easy reach of Penrith shops from now until early January. “Council is keen to make life easier for shoppers, business and workers by providing extra car parks before and after Christmas. This year, temporary parking is being extended to cater for the extra shoppers drawn to Penrith by summer sales,” Councillor McKeown said. “The additional parking is all day parking and will take pressure off existing car spaces to meet the needs of the many people using our CBD. People driving to and from work will also benefit from the additional all day parking spaces close to the CBD. The temporary parking areas are located at: • Woodriff Gardens Tennis complex, about 90 spaces • Judges Place, Penrith CBD, an extra 55 spaces • Council’s Civic Centre car park, about 45 spaces.

‘Tis the Season to (over) Spend I guess it’s my inner child but I just love Christmas! The tree’s, the lights, the buzz of the crowds and the cheesy music playing in the stores, call me crazy but I love it all! But Christmas can also be expensive. Loan repayments are missed in December and January more than any other time of year. Credit Card debt also increases significantly and sadly, over spending at Christmas starts a downward spiral that ends in financial ruin for some people. To avoid a financial hangover the best thing you can do is create a Christmas Budget. It’s really easy and will take you just 10 or 15 minutes. Here’s what you do; • Write a list of all your Christmas expenses. Include everything, even the wrapping paper and ribbon. Assign a cost for each item. • Write down the name of everyone you need to buy gifts for. • Make sure you include holiday expenses. • Even if you’re not going away, keeping the kids entertained can be expensive, so budget for this too. • Once you’ve got everything listed, calculate the total. With total in hand you can then decide if it is manageable. You may choose to fund some of this amount with a Credit Card and if so, use a card with a low or 0% rate and plan to have it repaid before next Christmas rolls around. Expect to pay 3% of the outstanding debt as minimum repayment, so $150 per month for $5,000. She spent two years studying Medical Science at the University of Sydney before entering the Veterinary Science degree which she completed in 2000. Early in her career Jennie spent time working in the north of England and in Wales. She was also able to pursue her interest in wildlife by volunteering at the Veterinary Quarantine Centre at Taronga Zoo for two
years. Since this time Jennie has worked at various small animal hospitals in western Sydney. Jennie is passionate about improving the welfare of animals and making a difference to all her patients. She feels all her patients are equally important and strives to make a difference through both prevention and treatment. Jennie is currently working part time as she has two young children, two dogs and a crazy feline who keep her busy the rest of the week. Jill the Puppy Preschool Trainer is Retiring Jill has been training puppies and adolescent dogs at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for the last 13-14 years. Jill is retiring to travel around Australia. Rachel and Lizzie, our veterinary nurses, will be taking over from Jill. They have been trained by Jill for the last month and are undertaking the Delta Dog Training program. We wish Jill all the best on her travels.
