Penrith Producers Over 50,000 people attended REAL Festival 2026 across 3 days last month at Tench Reserve, Penrith. It was perfect spring weather throughout the weekend, which created ideal conditions for visitors to enjoy the festival’s diverse program of experiences. Visitors explored a vibrant program of immersive art, live entertainment, creative workshops, market stalls, food vendors and family-friendly activities. Sunday’s on-water program was one of the festival’s most popular attractions, with strong participation in dragon boating, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and Chiliboats water bikes. The iconic Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler was one of the most popular attractions, offering free rides every 20 minutes throughout Sunday. The spectacular Riverside Laser Show sponsored by Busways drew large crowds on Friday and Saturday evenings, illuminating the night sky above the Nepean River. Hands-on experiences including the LEGO Workshop sponsored by Western Sydney International Airport, along with the Cultural Tour, Glow in the Dark UV Art Workshop and community art activities encouraged participation from visitors of all ages. Inspired by this year’s theme, Flight, the festival invited visitors to explore, create, connect and let their imaginations soar. New Book Champions Dignity in Older Care Glenmore Park Author Hayley Walsh is set to release her fourth book, Putting the ‘Care’ in Caring For The Older Person: Delivering Care With Compassion and Empathy, in November, bringing her experience and expertise to a subject close to her professional background. The non-fiction book will be available through Amazon and focuses on the importance of empathetic, compassionate and person-centred care for older people. Hayley said the book is designed to encourage carers and healthcare workers to look beyond clinical needs and remember the individual behind the patient. “It doesn’t focus on clinical skills,” she said, explaining that the book instead encourages readers to see the person in the hospital bed as an individual who has lived a rich and meaningful life. That includes recognising that every older person has their own history, family, career, relationships, experiences of love and loss, and a wealth of wisdom. Hayley hopes the book will provide useful guidance not only for healthcare workers but also for carers working in the community. At its heart is the belief that quality of life and dignity should remain front of mind when caring for older people. The book took approximately eight months to write. The project represented a change from her previous work in fiction, giving her the opportunity to draw on her career experience and professional expertise. The upcoming release follows Hayley’s previous three books, bringing her total published works to four. However, she is already looking ahead to her next project. Hayley is currently working on another fiction title, Scattered Scones, which she plans to publish during the first half of 2027. While Hayley enjoys the opportunity to explore different genres, she says one of the things she particularly enjoys about being an author is adding humour to her fiction. “We all need a good laugh,” she said. Sport, Fitness and Community Spirit For Robbie Hines, refereeing began as a way to understand the person he once found easiest to blame on the sporting field. A decade later, the man known as The GoPro Ref has turned his passion for sport into a platform for bringing people together. Robbie has been refereeing for around 10 years, primarily in Oztag, the non-contact form of rugby league. His experience has also extended to other forms of tag football and tournaments, including the DAF Cup and 3P Tag. What began as “community service” after becoming frustrated with referees quickly became something much bigger. “I tried it for the first time and immediately fell in love with it,” Hines said. “The fast pace, having to make decisions in a split second and the pressure of getting those close calls right.” Since then, he has refereed hundreds of games and travelled throughout NSW and interstate for tournaments. Next year, he will take his first overseas refereeing trip to Fiji. Robbie credits referee mentor Nathan Brown, known as “Brownie”, with playing a major role in shaping his career. Now, Hines is bringing that same energy to the Glenmore Park community through his role at Snap Fitness Glenmore Park. Outdoor fitness sessions for local children have already been introduced, with members and the wider community welcome to participate. Plans are also underway for Glenmore Park’s first community run club, while Robbie hopes to establish a regular “Walk and Talk” encouraging locals to exercise, connect and socialise. Other initiatives include supervised gym classes for 13 and 14-year-olds, teaching young people safe training techniques and gym etiquette. A senior’s class using BlazePods, an interactive light-based reaction system, is also being considered to promote movement, coordination and cognitive skills. For Hines, the goal is to make the gym more than somewhere to train. “I want it to become a genuine community hub where people of all ages feel welcome, supported and connected,” he said. Giving back remains central to his work. “I enjoy making people happy, giving back to the community and putting smiles on people’s faces,” he said. Turning Pink for a Cause The local community will once again be awash with pink when Turn The River Pink returns to Tench Reserve on Saturday, October 17. For more than a decade, the annual community event has raised more than $80,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), helping support world-class breast cancer research. Organised by Tanti Financial Services, with the goal of raising awareness as well as funds, Turn The River Pink invites participants to dress in their brightest and craziest pink outfits before taking part in a 5km walk along the Nepean River. Registration opens at 7:00am at Tench Reserve, with the walk commencing at 8:00am. Participants will return to the reserve afterwards for a barbecue breakfast and community gathering. Angie Harris of Tanti Financial Services said the event had become a special fixture for the local community, attracting individuals, families, friendship groups and workplace teams of all ages. “It’s a fantastic morning seeing participants come together to remember loved ones, celebrate those that are currently fighting or have won the cancer battle and help NBCF’s vision of Zero Deaths from Breast Cancer,” she said. Angie said organisers hoped to build on the event’s strong community support and encourage even more people from across Penrith to take part this year. “Whether you participate, donate or simply help spread the word, every action makes a difference,” she said. The community can register to take part through the Turn The River Pink website, prepare a pink outfit and invite friends, family and colleagues to join them. Those unable to attend can also make a donation through the website’s Donate Now button. After 10 years of bringing people together for the cause, organisers are looking forward to welcoming returning participants while growing the event’s reach. Turn The River Pink aims to support NBCF’s vision of Zero Deaths from Breast Cancer while honouring those lost to the disease, celebrating survivors and supporting people currently facing a diagnosis. Brumbies Celebrate Season of Success
Glenmore Park Brumbies JRLFC have celebrated another successful season, with strong player numbers, impressive finals performances and growing participation among girls highlighting a memorable year for the club. According to Club Secretary Allen Bush, the Brumbies fielded 28 teams this season, ranging from Under 5s through to Under 19s. The club also continued to build its girls’ program, with three Girls League Tag sides taking to the field. All Glenmore Park teams from Under 13s and above qualified for the finals, providing plenty of excitement as the season reached its conclusion. A particular highlight was the Under 14s Girls League Tag team, which claimed the premiership after losing just one game throughout the entire season. While success on the field has been a major feature of the season, Bush said the Brumbies had plenty to celebrate away from game day as well. The club saw increased registrations among younger players and girls, while community events including a successful Trivia Night and Sportsman Lunch helped bring members and supporters together. Bush also praised the contribution of the club’s volunteers, whose efforts played a significant role in making the season run smoothly. “The significant support given by volunteers made it easier to run the club,” he said, while also acknowledging the ongoing support of the Brumbies’ valued sponsors, both new and long-standing. The club also hosted Junior League gala days across two consecutive weekends, managing approximately 160 games during the events. Attention now turns to the end-of-season celebrations. Junior Presentations will be held on October 17 at Ched Towns Reserve, followed by the Senior Presentations on October 24 at the Masonic Hall, Orchard Hills. With preparations already beginning for next season, the Brumbies are calling for prospective coaches and volunteers to get involved. Coaching applications are open until October 24, 2026. Make Pool Safety a Priority this Season With warmer months upon us, Penrith City Council is encouraging residents to check that their backyard pools, including inflatable and portable pools, are safe, secure and compliant. Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said pools are a fantastic way to enjoy the season, but they come with great responsibilities. “Pools offer fun and relief from the heat, but they can quickly become dangerous if safety measures aren’t in place,’ Cr Carney said. “We’re asking residents to take a few minutes to check that their pool is secure, especially if there’s no barrier preventing children from accessing the water unsupervised.” “Active adult supervision is the best defence against drowning, but a compliant pool barrier adds an essential layer of protection.” Council’s qualified Compliance Officers are available to assist residents with pool inspections and certification. Portable and inflatable pools carry the same safety risks as permanent pools. If a pool is deeper than 30cm, it must be properly fenced. Additionally, any pool with a capacity over 2,000 litres requires development approval before installation and filling. Council can issue on-the-spot fines of $550 for propped-open gates or unfenced pools. To help prevent child drowning: • Install and maintain a compliant child resistant pool barrier. • Always supervise children around water. • Teach water awareness and swimming skills. • Learn CPR – any attempt is better than none. Steve’s ultimate goal is to complete the journey by reaching the steps of the Opera House. The idea was inspired by a friend from Wangaratta in Victoria, whom Steve met at a woodcraft event. His friend helped him establish set up, allowing Steve to record and track his progress. Walking has been a passion for Steve for many years. On May 14, 2014, he joined 10000steps.org.au. As of recently, he had recorded an extraordinary 62,180,377 steps, equivalent to approximately 1.2 times around the Earth. One of Steve and Gable’s recent highlights was completing their fifth consecutive City2Surf. They were not chasing records, Steve said, but simply wanted to “beat the street sweepers”. Their team, appropriately named Gable’s Gaggles, has made the event a memorable annual tradition. Last year’s City2Surf was particularly memorable, with the pair getting drenched in the rain. Steve also puts his passion for walking towards causes close to his heart. Many of his awareness and fundraising walks take place around Glenmore Park, including the Out of the Shadows Walk for suicide prevention, the Terry Fox Run supporting cancer research and activities promoting World Diabetes Day. He is also particularly passionate about supporting Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. This year brought another unexpected personal achievement when Steve was given the opportunity to drive a motor vehicle around Eastern Creek Raceway as part of the Blind Speed Event. His driving was so comfortable that Gable was soon asleep in the back seat. With 2,542km still to go, Steve and Gable continue to put one foot in front of the other, mostly on the familiar streets of Glenmore Park, as they work towards their virtual destination at the steps of the Sydney Opera House.

Western Sydney International Welcomes Trial Passengers and Jetstar Trial Flight Ahead of Airport Launch Western Sydney International (NancyBird Walton) Airport (WSI) has welcomed a Jetstar trial flight – an A320 passenger jet – for the first time alongside hundreds of trial passengers as it ramps up the final phase of its Operational Readiness Program ahead of commercial passenger services taking off from October 25. The passenger trials involve members of the public participating as volunteers, helping WSI and its partners to trial all stages of the terminal customer journey and associated services, systems and staff, as well as providing valuable feedback that can help enhance the overall airport experience. The program simulates a genuine journey with trial passengers allocated domestic and international flights, “checking in” for their flight, moving through WSI’s efficient security screening, and engaging with different airport facilities and staff as they would on any given travel day. WSI Chief Operating Officer Matt Duffy said this exciting final phase of WSI’s operational preparations had been underway since August and involved hundreds of trial participants taking part each week. “By October, we anticipate that thousands of participants will have engaged in our trial program - each one of them playing an important role in stress-testing our systems, processes and people. We’re aiming to make these various elements to be as ‘fail safe’ as they can be,” he said. “This is also about giving us as much experience as possible in navigating the inherently dynamic nature of round-the-clock airport operations. It’s a unique and positive opportunity we’re able to leverage as Australia’s first major international greenfield airport in more than 50 years. “The interest from volunteers within the community for the trials was overwhelming - thousands of trial slots were filled

within days. We’re very grateful for the enthusiasm and support from the participants who are taking part each week in the lead up to our passenger services taking off in October.” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said the trial flight was an important test to ensure that Western Sydney’s International Airport is ready to go on day one. “We’ve had a firefighting tanker and hundreds of freight flights take off and land at Western Sydney International,” Minister King said. “Now for the first time, a Jetstar passenger plane has come into land at the new airport.” “The airline and airport crews have tested systems like aerobridges, refuelling, baggage services and more, 54 days ahead of Jetstar’s inaugural flight to the Gold Coast.” Jetstar Chief Pilot Tyrone Simes said flying the first service into a brand‑new airport is a once‑in‑a‑career moment. “Australia hasn’t opened a major new airport like this in more than 50 years, so this morning was a genuinely exciting milestone for me and the team,” he said. “We’re doing this eight weeks out from the first flight deliberately. It gives us time to take what we learned and build it into our procedures and crew briefings, ensuring everything is fully tested and refined well ahead of launch. “The flight was about getting to know the airport before we carry customers. Crew flew the arrival and departure exactly as they will in October, then worked through the ground side of the operation: the taxi route to the gate, lining up on the aerobridge, and the turnaround that gets the aircraft back out again. “By the time we carry our first customers from Western Sydney, every element of this operation will be familiar to us - and we can’t wait to share that first flight with them.” Trial participants simulate both domestic and international arrivals and departures as part of WSI’s ongoing program. They use self-check in and bag drop facilities, and WSI’s modern security screening which includes extra-long lanes, additional body scanners and central image processing to review multiple trays at a time and facilitate efficient processing. Officers from the Australian Border Force (ABF) and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishers (DAFF) also take part in the trials, reinforcing their integral role in the international arrivals process and border security. The Regentville Rural Fire Brigade welcomed local families to its annual Open Day on September 19, giving the community an opportunity to meet volunteers and learn more about the work they do to protect the local area. Held from 10:00am to 2:00pm, the event featured a wide range of emergency vehicles, equipment and activities for visitors of all ages. Families were able to explore the brigade’s fire trucks, boats and specialist equipment, while a helicopter was also on display. Live demonstrations provided an insight into the work of Rural Fire Service volunteers and the equipment they use when responding to emergencies. Younger visitors were kept entertained with colouring competitions and other family-friendly activities, making the Open Day both an educational and enjoyable community event. According to Seth Wilmot of Regentville Rural Fire Brigade, the brigade is also continuing to look for enthusiastic locals who are interested in becoming volunteers. The brigade is particularly seeking more firefighters with some daytime availability. There is no set amount of time volunteers need to commit, with the brigade encouraging anyone who can contribute to get involved. People whose employers offer flexible arrangements, as well as shift workers and others with availability during the day, are particularly encouraged to consider joining. Those interested in volunteering can begin their application by contacting the brigade through Facebook, visiting the brigade on Tuesday nights at 7:00pm, or applying through the NSW Rural Fire Service website. The brigade’s next major community event will be its annual Santa Runs in December. Santa will visit the majority of Glenmore Park, Emu Plains and surrounding suburbs throughout the month. Specific dates and times for each location will be announced on the brigade’s Facebook page. The brigade is also preparing to celebrate a significant milestone, marking 75 years of service to the community this November. Wilmot extended a “massive thank you” to the brigade’s supporters, for their ongoing support as Regentville RFS celebrates the milestone and continues its service to the local community.

The Fresh Life of Spring
The air is warmer and flowers are blooming. Everyone has a fresh step on their morning walks. Even our dogs seem happier. A change in weather can trigger a change in attitude, but this is not always enough to change deeper realities in our lives that rob us of joy or peace. Often, deeper changes are needed if we are to experience fresh shoots in our souls. Why is this the case? The Bible teaches that we live life from the inside out. This means that what is happening deep inside us, where we know and feel things, is a defining influence on our daily experience of life. Inside, we carry wounds from past experiences and form understandings about our own value or what is important. Our inner self makes demands upon us to succeed or to prove ourselves, and this is where we know things that either bring us hope or hover over us like dark clouds of despair. The important thing to realise is that wherever we go, we take ourselves with us. Outward circumstances might change, with some short-term spike of delight, but what we carry inside remains the same unless we do something about it. Jesus said that if we followed him, we would not live in darkness because he would shine the light of God into our lives – sort of like a spiritual springtime. We can all identify the darkness of our own lives. Jesus didn’t mean that we needed to jump through religious hoops to earn God’s light, but that when we align our lives with his truth and rhythms of love, this would make possible a fresh quality of life. Think about light concentrated through a magnifying glass until it starts a fire. As we allow the truth found in Jesus to shine consistently into our inner beings and bring change there, it is like light through a magnifying glass. Eventually, it sparks a fire or a new quality of life. If you are looking for some fresh shoots in your soul this Spring, what will you do about what is happening inside you?

The Ultimate Assessment Semi finals, finals, grand finals, exams, reports, the HSC, for lots of people, the end of the year is a time of testing and assessment. It’s a time when you get to see how you’ve gone. What have you learned? How well have you performed? Did you make the grade? Most of these assessments only deal with one part of life: a particular sport, subject, or competition. But the Bible tells us that one day, our whole lives will be assessed by God. The question won’t simply be whether we were successful or whether other people thought we were good. It will be whether we have lived as God made us to live, recognising him as God and living according to his standards. And the uncomfortable truth is that none of us have. We naturally compare ourselves with others. We look at someone who has done terrible things and reassure ourselves that we’re not as bad as them. But other people aren’t the standard. God is. And all of us have fallen short. So the answer isn’t simply to try harder. We need forgiveness. We need a new start with God. And that’s the good news that Jesus brings. God sent Jesus into the world so that guilty people like you and me could be forgiven and brought back into relationship with him. The ultimate assessment is coming, God’s assessment of our lives. But through Jesus, we don’t have to face it hoping we’ve been good enough. We haven’t been! Our confidence can be in the forgiveness that Jesus brings.

Fixing Chronic Lower Back Pain Most people have lower back pain at some point. Often it disappears after mild anti-inflammatory medication, with a little rest, or light massage. But sometimes pain remains. This longer lasting back pain might simply be annoying, sometimes a little better after you warm up but always there in the background, but at worst it might be a constant debilitating pain. Often such pain radiates down into the buttock & legs (sciatica), sometimes leading to strange, tingling or loss of feeling down an affected leg to the toes. This type of chronic back problem can stop you from working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated, especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue. Many individual causes can lead to chronic back pain but (in most instances) chronic pain develops as follows. A simple overuse or other injury results in the release of a variety of molecules by the injured cells and damaged tissue. These molecules cause fluid and immune cells to leave the bloodstream and enter affected back muscles, causing them to swell and shorten (tighten). The same molecules cause nerves in the affected area to inflame, sending pain signals to the brain. The muscles’ reduced ability to contract, plus the swelling,
can lead to lowered blood & lymph flow away from the tissue, resulting in inefficient clearing of inflammatory molecules away from injured tissue. Injury is often also one sided, the resultant shortened muscles on the affected side may result in altered spinal alignment. Under such conditions, the affected muscles and connective tissue can become locked into a cycle of shortness/tightness and inflammation/pain. Exercise may help relieve pain, but exercise may sometimes also worsen problems. The solution lies in using specific remedial techniques to: 1. Remove the inflammatory fluid from and 2. Lengthen the affected back muscles and connective tissues. Once this is done, muscle function and spinal alignment can normalise and can pain subside. Back pain is often completely relieved, even in many longstanding cases. The same is often true for some chronic shoulder & some knee complaints. Halloween: Is It a Trick or Treat for Pets? Halloween is just around the corner, with October 31 bringing costumes, decorations, trick-or-treaters and, of course, plenty of sweet treats. While it is an exciting time for families, Halloween can also bring some unexpected tricks for our pets. What looks like harmless fun to us can be confusing, frightening or even dangerous for our four-legged family members. With a little planning, however, you can make sure Halloween is more treat than trick for your pets. The “Tricks” – Halloween Dangers Toxic Treats - Chocolate is one of the biggest Halloween hazards for pets. It can cause serious illness in dogs and cats, with darker chocolate generally posing a greater risk. Raisins and grapes can also be toxic, while sugar-free lollies and chewing gum containing xylitol can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and potentially serious illness, particularly in dogs. Keep all Halloween treats securely out of reach and remind children that their treats are not for sharing with the family pet. Wrappers Can Be a Problem - It is not just the sweets themselves that can cause trouble. Curious pets may be attracted to the smell of discarded wrappers and swallow cellophane, foil or plastic packaging. These materials can become lodged in the digestive tract and potentially cause a serious intestinal blockage. Make sure wrappers go straight into a secure bin and clean up dropped treats promptly. Doorbell Anxiety - For some pets, Halloween night can be overwhelming. Constant knocking or doorbell ringing, excited children and unfamiliar people dressed in unusual costumes can cause fear or anxiety. Even normally calm pets may become unsettled, while frightened
cats and dogs may try to escape through an open door. Costumes Aren’t for Everyone - While a pet in a Halloween costume can make for a great photo, not every animal enjoys dressing up. Tight or restrictive clothing, masks and accessories can interfere with movement, vision or breathing. If your pet is uncomfortable, don’t force them to participate. Their wellbeing is more important than the perfect Halloween photo. How to Make Halloween a “Treat” The easiest way to keep pets safe is to give them their own quiet space during the busiest part of the evening. A closed room away from the front door, with their bed, water and favourite toys, can provide a safe retreat from the excitement. Keep sweets and decorations securely out of reach and dispose of wrappers immediately. If you want to include your pet in the festivities, consider a simple, lightweight accessory such as a festive bandana rather than a full costume. You can also give your pet a pet-safe treat while the trick-or-treaters enjoy theirs. This allows them to be part of the celebrations without sharing potentially dangerous human food. Halloween should be fun for everyone, including our pets. A little preparation can prevent an unwanted emergency and ensure the only tricks this October 31 are the ones planned for the occasion. If your pet does eat something they shouldn’t or you are concerned about their health or behaviour during Halloween.

Understanding Snake Activity this Season
With Spring now upon us, Western Sydney residents can anticipate increased snake sightings in bushlands, grasslands, backyards, and houses. The snake season traditionally falls between September to March, but often varies due to temperatures. Sean Cade, from Australian Snake Catchers, has over 20 years of experience and assures residents that these encounters should be viewed as informative rather than alarming. “Snakes are mostly present for shelter or food and are generally just passing through a property,” Sean explained. The Sydney Basin is home to a diverse range of snakes. “Most people in Western Sydney will come across the Eastern Brown Snake, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, and the Golden Crowned Snake,” Sean said. Other snakes in the Sydney Basin include the Broad Headed Snake, Tiger Snake, Marsh Snake, and Death Adder. Sean offered some basic tips to minimise the chances of encountering snakes:
• Avoid approaching snakes. • Refrain from trying to catch or harm them. • Ensure children and pets maintain a safe distance. • Clear any clutter or trash around your home. • Maintain clean lawns and store firewood at a distance from the house. Correcting common misconceptions, Sean explained that the presence of a Red Bellied Black Snake doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t encounter an Eastern Brown Snake. “This is a common statement which is incorrect. If the snakes are a similar length, they cannot eat each other. And Eastern Brown Snakes will also eat a Red Bellied Black Snake,” he said. Sean’s dedication to his profession stems from a love for wildlife and a passion to share the wonders of native fauna with his children. “Although many are hesitant to deal with snakes, they play a valuable role in our ecosystem. They, like any animal, sometimes need assistance,” he said. “Snakes don’t need to be feared. With a little understanding they are quite fascinating creatures. This time of year, they are breeding also and are quite active,” Sean explained. “Due to urban development, encounters may increase due to habitat loss” he added. If someone is suspected of having a snake bite, (not sure if it is a scratch or bitten) apply a compression bandage, keep patient still and calm and call 000. “There is no need to catch the snake for identification” ended Sean.
