Camille Nominated to be the New Bondi Vet There is some exciting news in the local community with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s Owner and Veterinarian, Dr Camille Brandt, being nominated to be the next Bondi Vet recently by her clients. The popular Veterinarian’s video application to be the next Bondi Vet is now on the Bondi Vet website (www.bondivet.com. au) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bondivetofficial). It can also be viewed on Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s new Facebook page (www.facebook.com/orchardhillsvethospital). Talking To Tourists Under blue skies and surrounded by tranquil bush a group of concerned residents from the lower mountains met recently at the gate to Glenbrook National Park. They were there to talk to visiting tourists about the proposed airport at Badgery's Creek, less than 20 kms away as the crow flies. Were the visitors aware of the proposed airport and what did they think about it? How did they feel about the peace and solitude they were seeking in the national park being disturbed by planes flying overhead at 4000 feet (1200 metres), every ten to fifteen minutes, with a noise level of around 60 decibels, loud enough to stop a conversation? Did they know there would not be a curfew? Were they concerned about the impact on biodiversity and the threat to critically endangered species? Did they know that the World Heritage Status of the Greater Blue Mountains National Park was now at risk? The general response was one of dismay and disbelief. One visitor from Sydney asked "Have you talked to the government about this?"! Representatives of RAWSA (Residents Against Western Sydney Airport), the organisers of the event, had indeed spoken with a number of government and opposition MPs, including Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg and Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher, so far with little success. Both the Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, and the federal member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, addressed the crowd. Susan Templeman talked about the work she had done to inform those in parliament about the impact an

airport the size of Heathrow would have on Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. On the day, it was also emphasised that although government approval had now been given for the building of the airport it was still possible to prevent it from going ahead. The campaign, designed to build awareness about the detrimental impact of a second airport in the already polluted Sydney Basin would continue. All Things Mum this Mothers Day
For many mums around Australia, the day to day activities of running a home can be hard work. Add to this those that work and, in particular, those who own and run successful businesses and you have the ingredients for a truly special person. This is certainly the case for local mum, Melinda Leyshon. “I started WriteCopy in 2013. I was on maternity leave and helping out in my husband’s business at the time, and my mum fell and broke her shoulder. She needed intensive care for a period, and the timing coincided with a call from an ex-colleague who asked me to do some writing work for him. After I received his feedback my girlfriend said, “Look at you - you’re buzzing! You need to go back to doing what you love�. So WriteCopy was born� explained Melinda. Melinda is now the proud mother of two children. She admits that she was extremely lucky when starting up, thanks to the
incredible support of her family and friends as well as a strong network of local business owners. The balance of being a mum and a business owner is not easy, but one that Melinda tries to get better at every day. “When I see my girlfriend leaving home early and getting home late after commuting into the city, I’m reminded of how lucky I am that I can spend the mornings and afternoons with my children. But that also comes with the stress of meeting deadlines after they go to sleep, occasionally setting the alarm for 3am when I have a big week so I can work before they wake, and working on the weekends. Learning to ask for help has definitely helped me make the balance easier thoughâ€? she said. When asked what the best thing is about being a successful, working mum, Melinda replied “Definitely seeing how proud my daughter is, and how she recognises that she can choose her own path in lifeâ€?. For any mums wanting to start their own business, the road is not easy, but it’s one that can definitely be achieved. Having walked that path, Melinda has this advice; “The first is to ask for help - it’s taken me years to learn that I’m not a superwoman and that it’s the support from my friends, family and peers that lets me perform at my best. The second is to get a mentor - someone who can inspire, motivate and pick you up when you’re feeling crappy (because it happens!). And the third is to try to get out of the house. When I worked from home I had no delineation between home and work. Now I’m working at The Creative Fringe, a co-working space in Penrith, I have clear family and work time. Better for my head, and better for my kids!â€? Mother’s Day is a chance to recognise mums for all that they do for us every year. The Book of Books It’s the most printed book in all of history. In the past people have died for translating it into their own language. Many know about it, but have never read it themselves. It’s the Bible. The Bible makes extraordinary claims about itself. It claims to be the Word of God. God himself, speaking to his creation. Of course, it was written by people. Quite a few people at different times in fact. But since God caused it to be written, it’s not a collection of different ideas all at odds with each other. It is one unified story. But what’s the point? It turns out God wants us to know Him. And He wants us to know ourselves. And He wants us to know how he’s brought us and Him back together when we were apart. It’s a book like no other book. This book has the power to change lives. You might ask why He chose to do it this way. I guess the answer is words are powerful, and His words powerful above all. But when you think about it, writing is a pretty durable
format. I mean, writing things down has existed for a long time, and it makes it easy to pass things on, and pass around. So what’s it about? It’s a rescue story. It’s God’s great rescue of people. It’s the unfolding plan of God to fix what was broken. It’s the story of a growing kingdom with a loving and kind, powerful and yet just king. It’s the story that ushers in Jesus Christ as that king. If you’ve never read it before, maybe this is the month to start. Look up the contents page and start at the book of Mark or Luke. Look it up online. You can even select to have it read to you. We even have gift copies of the book of Luke we’d love to give you. This book is a book like no other. Don’t miss out on hearing what it has to say. Funding For Local Heritage And The Nepean River
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has marked this year’s National Heritage Festival by announcing a $40,000 grant to the Blue Mountains Council to undertake conservation work on state heritage listed Lennox Bridge. The council will receive $40,000 over two years for a stonemason to undertake the restoration work on the bridge, which is the oldest on mainland Australia. “Looking after our heritage is everyone’s responsibility and communities play an important role in maintaining and promoting heritage locally,” Stuart Ayres said. “Our local heritage speaks to our history so it is important to protect, promote and celebrate it.” Councils, Aboriginal organisations, peak heritage organisations and owners of heritage items across the state were awarded a share of $5.4 million in grant funding under the NSW Government’s Heritage Grants Program. Penrith Council also received two heritage grants over two years totalling $23,000. “These two grants will go towards the cost of a local heritage advisor who will provide advice to the council on local heritage planning and conservation, and a locally run small grants

program to encourage the community to protect their local heritage,” Mr Ayres said. Heritage Minister Gabrielle Upton said this heritage funding was vital for communities to protect their heritage. “I encourage people to use this time to explore their local heritage. There are a number of National Trust NSW Heritage Festival events running until 21 May for people to celebrate our state’s heritage,” Ms Upton said. Willow Warriors will also receive a $5,000 grant from Ms Upton’s conservation fund to help tackle black willows, an invasive weed, in the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment. The conservation group will paddle waterways within the catchment to poison and prevent the weed from growing. The money will be used to educate landowners about eradicating the weed and to help maintain and purchase equipment for the group. “This is a great example of a community project helping make a difference to our local environment, protecting the Nepean River,” Stuart Ayres said. Inspiring the Future Launches Nationally discussion. In the speed career networking activity, 8 volunteers rotated around the room each spending 7 minutes talking to a table of 8-10 students at any one time. Students were encouraged to ask the volunteers questions about their career and how they got to where they are now. Students involved in the event gave great feedback about how it informed their thinking about the future and how it was great to hear people's passion for their job. One student said he learnt "that having passion and drive was so important no matter what you do." The two activities involved representatives from LG Electronics, Penrith CBD Corporation, Panthers, Bells Partners Finance, Engineers Australia, THALES, Apprentices R US Group Training Association of NSW and ACT, Master HR Solutions, the Star Entertainment Group and Job Jump.
The launch of Inspiring the Future nationally took place in Emu Plains last month. The Hon. Rob Stokes MP and the Hon. Stuart Ayers MP both attended the event held at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School as well as approximately 80 students from Western Sydney schools; teachers, association representatives, corporate industry representatives, and other special guests. The Hon. Rob Stokes MP gave valuable advice to the young people, encouraging them that “a career is not something in and of itself but a vehicle that takes you where you want to go, it’s something that gets you somewhere.” As well as the first official career talk by Minister Stokes, the event also involved two demonstration ITF activities with students, a career speed networking activity and a career panel

Peer Pressure It used to be something that we worried about with teens. But it seems that younger children need to learn how to deal with peer pressure these days. There is a lot of peer conflict in primary school and sometimes kids get caught up in stuff that they didn’t really anticipate and know how to manage. For example, a child thinks it would be a good idea to hide someone else’s lunch bag. Maybe just for a laugh, to annoy that kid, or to make him angry. This is a simple example. It seems like a bit of a lark. But it also may be one act in a stream of events targeting one particular child, in which case it would be bullying. The protagonist gets other kids involved in the scheme. Some of those kids may think it’s a good idea, but some might not and they don’t know how to say ‘no’ without fear of ridicule or losing the friendship. Peer pressure is when your friends or other kids your age try to get you to do something that you don’t want to do. It is very hard to say ‘no’ to your friends, and it sometimes takes a lot of courage. The steps in dealing with peer pressure are: 1. Calm down, using calming down strategies (belly breathing, talking ourselves through it, counting backwards, thinking calming thoughts); 2. Think the problem through; 3. Be cool, calm, and confident, and use an “I statement’ to let the other people know what you think in a polite way; 4. Tell the other kids why you don’t think it’s a good idea; 5. Suggest something else to do for fun. This can be hard for kids to do. They may need some support from a trusted adult to help walk them through it. Glenbrook Players Present 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest'
Rehearsals are well under way for Glenbrook Player’s production of ” One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest . Written by Dale Waserman and based on Ken Kesey’s novel , the play follows a range of characters who have for some reason or other found themselves in a mental institution in the 1960’s. Randle McMurphy (played by Phil Donney) is a rebellious low level prisoner sent to the institution to be assessed as to whether he is suffering from a mental illness. Along the way he finds himself influencing the other patients and encouraging them to stand up against the authoritarian Nurse Ratched (Madelaine Sheehy) with terrible consequences. With a great ensemble cast featuring a mix of regular
Glenbrook Players and newcomers, the play has moments of humour intertwined with high tension drama. Fans of the Academy Award winning film of the same name, featuring a young Jack Nicholson in the lead role, should appreciate the stage version. No-Bake Mixed Berry Pie
Ingredients 10 graham crackers ½ cup butter, melted 8 ounces cream cheese, softened ¼ cup maple syrup 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries, sliced 4 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons lemon juice, about half a lemon ¼ cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Method 1. Place graham crackers in a plastic bag and crush them into fine crumbs using a rolling pin. Alternatively, a food processor can be used to crush the crackers. 2. Pour the graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl with the melted butter. 3. Mix until the crumbs take on the character of a coarse, wet sand. 4. Pour the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish. Press the crumb firmly into the dish, making sure to coat the bottom and sides of the dish evenly. Once the crust has been formed, place the pie dish into the refrigerator to firm up. 5. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together cream cheese and maple syrup. Once combined, pour the mixture into pie crust and return it to refrigerator to chill. 6. Meanwhile, add half of the blueberries and strawberries to a saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of water, lemon juice, and sugar. 7. Cook for 2-4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and berries begin to expel their juice, creating a loose, deep-red mixture. 8. In a small bowl or ramekin, mix cornstarch and remaining 2 tablespoons of water into a smooth paste. Add the cornstarch mixture to the berries and cook for an additional 2 minutes, until the filling thickens. Remove from heat and set aside. 9. Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes. 10. Remove the chilled pie crust with the cream cheese layer from the refrigerator. Take the remaining blueberries and strawberries and evenly distribute them over the top of the cream cheese layer. 11. Next, pour the cooked berry mixture over the top of the fresh fruit and cream cheese, filling in the rest of the pie crust. Spread the filling evenly. 12. Chill the pie completely in the refrigerator for 1.5-2 hours before serving. 13. Enjoy! The Caring Hearts Community Quilters held their 9th Annual ‘Airing on the Quilts’ at The Arms of Australia Inn Museum last month. The event was a huge success, drawing a crowd of over 300 people throughout the course of the day. “It was a great day. Everybody was really happy”, reported Rosemary Weaver, Senior Vice President and Publicity Officer of the Nepean District Historical Society. She said that visitors were delighted, enjoyed having a Devonshire Tea, walking around the grounds and seeing the quilts floating in the breeze. An impressive 176 quilts were on view, all made by 14 senior ladies on pensions who spend countless hours of their time, energy and sometimes their own money, sewing and creating. The quilts are donated to local hospitals, women’s refuges, neonatal wards, palliative care patients, among many other worthy causes, even soldiers in Afghanistan. Founding member Margaret Collier said it is very rewarding work as the recipients of the quilts are always appreciative, “We’ve had some beautiful letters from people, sometimes with a photo, even of a funeral service”. Collier, who has a house and garage full of quilts and supplies, started the award winning group in 2004. They meet solely to make quilts for charity, making on average around 120 per year. “We are busy, busy all the time”, she remarked, “but it keeps us out of mischief”. In 2009, they sent 130 quilts to the people affected by the Victorian bushfires and in 2013 they sent 243 to people in the Winmalee and Springwood fires. The dedicated ladies worked night and day for 6 weeks to make the quilts. The group is completely self-funded and the proceeds from their annual fundraising event go toward much needed supplies like cotton wadding, backing and fabric. Remembering the Homeless All Year Around
The weather is getting colder and the nights longer, especially for people living on the streets. On any given Monday to Saturday night, the delicious smells of sizzling sausages and onions or warm soup welcome nearly 100 people who travel from many miles around to have a bite to eat, a cuppa and a friendly chat. Mama Lana’s Community Foundation’s team of amazing volunteers serves nutritious meals six nights a week at Judges Carpark in Penrith on the corner of Union Lane and Woodriff Street. They are a wholly not-for-profit organisation ‘dedicated to helping our forgotten homeless and underprivileged community in the greater Penrith region’. Mama Lana’s was started in 2013 by husband and wife team and Emu Plains residents, Lana and Roger Borg. Lana remembers her shock at discovering how much of a need there was in the community. “When I realised what was going on, I was blown away”. 4 Robertson Place, South Penrith NSW 2750
She says that holidays are always difficult times for people in vulnerable positions. “We have to turn volunteers away at Christmas time because we have so many”. But, she says the rest of the year is just as important. Last month they served up a Good Friday fish meal and on Easter Saturday they distributed donated chocolate eggs to all of their patrons. They will also make a special effort on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and even birthdays. “It’s great to be able to help” said local volunteer Amy Basman, who cooks and does deliveries. Mama Lana’s also distribute clothing, toiletries, take away produce and have a ‘Footpath Library’. Does Exercise Improve Bone Density? If So, Which Exercises & Why? The short answer is yes, exercise can improve bone density even in post-menopausal women and older men. The key is selecting the right type of exercise and continuing to do it regularly. Firstly, new bone formation happens at sites of bone stress. Indeed, bone strength improves substantially even with only small changes in bone density (BMD) when bone is added at these sites. To improve bone density requires commitment. A minimum of six months of regular exercise, 3-6 days per week can realize significant bone density benefits. The exercises that really improve strength are high impact exercises such as jumping, rather than simply resistance or aerobic exercise. Here are some examples. 20-year-old women who did 10 x two-legged maximum vertical jumps 8-12 seconds apart, 3 times per week for 6 months showed significantly increased BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar spine, compared to controls. Simple skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. 5 years of resistance training with weighted vest and an average 51.7 jumps/day, 3 times/wk, from a 20.3-cm-high step, improved femoral neck bone density compared with a control group in postmenopausal woman aged 64.1–69.9 years. Men with prostate cancer that undergo androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) usually lose significant bone mass as testosterone
helps to keep bones strong. A recent 6-month study of men on ADT showed that those who did no special exercise lost 3.2% of lumbar bone density, a second group completing a combination of resistance and aerobic exercise also lost 2.6%, while those who completed a combination of resistance training and the impact loading exercises such as hopping, skipping and jumping exhibited no significant change in bone mineral density over the same time period. Clearly high impact exercises like jumping are highly important for bone density. Why might this be? Well it comes down to something called the piezoelectric effect! The stress of exercise deforms bone collagen molecules causing tiny electrical charges to move from the inside to the outside surface of bone at the site of stress (the piezoelectric effect). This attracts bone-building cells (called osteoblasts) to the site. These cells then deposit more bone (calcium & collagen) on the stressed side of the bone, increasing bone density & strength. This effect is maximised when the loading forces on bone are highest e.g. from high impact exercises. Hopping, skipping and jumping cause the most stress on bones, and so these forms of exercise (rather than simple weight training or aerobic exercise) are the ones you will need to do regularly to build bone. By building-up carefully, and maybe with a little supervision, you’ll be surprised how easy these exercises are to do safely even for older people.

Cupples had a score of 72 on day one at Richmond Golf Club, to hold a share of the lead with Kenning and then moved five strokes ahead with a score of 80, on day two at Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club. The entire field struggled on the tough Glenmore Heritage Valley layout, but Cupples took full advantage of achieving his slim lead, finishing with a final round score of 76 on day three at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club to claim this year's championship title, four shots ahead of the field. Cupples is one of Leonay's top A Grade golfers, regularly participating in the club's Seniors and Masters Pennants teams. “It was fabulous to see Laurie win the most prestigious event run by the New South Wales Veterans Golf Association. Another Mother’s Day Without Mum It feels like yesterday that I was writing about missing Mum on Mother’s Day. Mum died on Christmas Day 2015, she was 85 years old. Mum had dementia and for a long time she didn’t know who I was. She rarely called me by name and when my eldest daughter would visit her, Mum would introduce her, as “This is my daughter Cait�. I remember the first time that I knew Mum had no idea who I was. I walked through the door, she was sitting in her chair and when she looked up I saw a huge smile come across her face. She said, “I’m so glad to see you�, she walked toward me, and she grabbed me and hugged me tightly. She said, “I’ve been waiting for ages to have a cup of coffee, I haven’t seen you for so long�. While we were walking to the coffee shop she asked me where Cait was because she hasn’t seen her for years. It was a strange feeling that Mum didn’t know me but in a weird way I was okay with it. She was always excited to see me and I loved seeing the
excitement on her face when I went to visit her. That’s the thing that I miss about Mum. I miss her smile, she lit up the room with her smile. It’s been almost a year and a half since she died. I still miss her and think about her every day. I’m sure there are many people reading this who miss their mother this Mother’s Day (and every other day). Remember you’re not alone, their memories live on in us. To remember your Mum this Mother’s Day: • Share stories of your Mum • Look through photos • Visit her favourite place • Write her a letter to catch her up on what’s been happening since she died • Make sure the next generation knows who she was, so they can carry on her memory

As May has arrived, with it the crisp mornings and cooler nights. I am quite a fan of the freshness that arrives with May. Call me crazy, or keen for a challenge. Like many people before us, we have decided to tackle a 'Block-Style' renovation at our home of 17 years....... heading into Winter! It has been such an interesting introduction to the world of renovating. Currently we are in the 'de-clutter' phase. A case of recycle, re-use or remove. To sift through 17 years of accumulated 'stuff ' brings with it a certain sense of satisfaction as we start to clear it all out. Some items have been given away to friends and family who need it, other items donated to the Church and some have been listed to sell. It clearly demonstrates just how much 'stuff ' one accumulates over a lifetime; and how much of it is really necessary ? We have received many quotes for work around our 'tired' home. It has been such a wonderful resource of local trades and services to call on many of the contacts you find right here in the Gazette. These local businesses support our local sporting teams, donate funds to many local causes and provide sponsorship across a variety of areas. It's nice to return the support, it brings with it a real sense of community. We Live.Love.Local! "Do the right thing, even when no one is looking, it's called integrity."
