Australia Day Honours For Emu Plains Lion Emu Plains Lion, John Choma, was awarded a Penrith City Council Australia Day Local Appreciation Award, along with six other winners, plus Citizen and Sports Person of the Year, presented by Mayor, Councillor Karen McKeown, last month at Penrith Council’s Civic Centre. John’s nomination and award was a reflection of his contribution to the Lions organisation, and the two Clubs he has been a member of, as well as their supported charities, for over 41 years. The bright and breezy function heard how John was originally a member of St Marys Lions Club but became a driving force for the formation of Emu Plains Lions Club, organising and conducting a number of public meetings to promote and establish a new Club. John became a Charter Member (the last remaining one) of Emu Plains Lions Club., where he has held every Executive position at least once on the Club's Board of Directors. He has always been the "go-to" patriarch of EPLC, providing valuable support for all Club Members undertaking new roles on the Club's Board. Welcome to our first edition for 2016! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take on board any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It’s these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals. We are in the first weeks back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics. Getting Ready For Back To School Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has reminded parents they may need to apply for a School Opal card if their child’s circumstances have changed for the 2016 school year. The School Opal card replaces the old paper School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel pass, and while most students will receive their new Opal card automatically, there are some parents who will need to apply. “If your child is starting Kindergarten, going into Year 3 or Year 7, moved house, or has changed schools or campuses - you need to apply for a School Opal card. For everyone else, the card will be ready to be picked up at school for the start of term,� Stuart Ayres said. “More than five million Opal cards are already in use, and now we’re expanding Opal to give school students the same kind of convenience. “For families where there is shared parental responsibility, a single School Opal card can be set to work for both parents’ homes ensuring convenience and peace of mind.� “As parents are busy ticking off their ‘back to school’ lists we want to make sure that the School Opal card is on that list.� The School Opal card enables free travel for eligible students from more than 2,000 schools travelling on public transport across Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and Southern Highlands. New and Old It’s a New Year! And with it you may be starting a new job, know someone starting at a new school, or still be enjoying the new gift you were given at Christmas. We love new things. They offer new opportunities, or bring new hopes. They can mark a break with old ways, or an old era we’d like to put behind us. But at the same time I also remember an older, wiser person telling me, ‘Not all that’s new is better, and not all that’s old is worse’. I’ve experienced that myself. Sometimes it’s the older appliances that are still kicking along after 30 years, when their new equivalent kicks the bucket in half the time. The same can often be said for the tools you bought a lifetime ago, that outlast the ones you bought last year. What about the good news about Jesus Christ? What do you make of it? In many ways it’s old news now. After all, he lived and died nearly 2000 years ago. People have talked about him, written about him, changed their lives because of him. Surely we’ve moved on though? Except, he didn’t just live and die, but the eyewitnesses saw him risen again (1 Corinthians 15:1-8 summarises those events for us). That was new. The news that came with it was just as earth shattering, we can be made new again by Him. Whatever else is new for you this year, there is something you may have thought as old, even out-dated, that you should consider as the year gets under way. How will the news of Jesus’ new life affect your life? Maybe this year you’ll experience new life from Him yourself. Imagine what that would be like, what new hope it would bring? To Foster, Encourage and Develop 2015 FLASHBACK
The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is designed to foster, encourage and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities of our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education. The judging is held over two days; with a preliminary interview before a judging panel, followed on by an evening with a public speaking dinner. The student is required to prepare a five minute speech for the dinner as the public speaking section of the quest, as well as provide two minute answers to two impromptu questions. The Lions Club of Emu Plains hosted their 2015/16 Quest in November 2015, including speech presentations and dinner. Fiona Scott, Federal Member for Lindsay and Karen McKeown, Mayor of Penrith City, both attended and presented certificates
to students and teachers who mentored them for the Quest. The overall winner was John Nolan of Penrith Anglican College. The public speaking winner was Elayna D’Ermilio of McCarthy Catholic College. Elayna’s speech entertained the audience of 60 guests and was titled the real meaning of ‘YOLO’, You Only Live Once. The other contestants were; Hayley McKenzie of Nepean Creative & Performing Arts High School and Kiara Auddino of McCarthy Catholic College. The Sponsor for this local event is Jim Aitken + Partners. He was talking about parenting in general, and parenting a child with a disability more specifically. One thing, that Professor Tonge said, really rang a bell with me. He said ‘Parenting is an active process’. How true is that? Nothing in life is achieved by sitting down, and this is especially true of parenting. Children don’t grow themselves up, and parenting gets harder as your children get older. You only get out of it what you put into it, and children do better in every way when their parents are actively involved in their lives. When you think of everything your children need to learn about themselves and the world, the mind boggles. And parents are their children’s first teacher. It is not up to school to teach children everything. Getting along with others, managing emotions, practical skills, literacy, self-care, etc., doesn’t start when children go to preschool or school. Learning starts from birth. And children don’t always learn stuff by being specifically instructed. They learn it in relationship with us, their parents. They learn it in the daily interactions – all day, every day. It’s not something that you turn on once per week on Sunday. As a parent you are always ‘on’. What an awesome responsibility this work of raising children is. But there is a fine balance isn’t there? Between being ‘too much’ and ‘too little’. How do we achieve ‘just enough’? There is a strategy in the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course called “incidental teaching”. It’s such a gentle and nurturing strategy of getting alongside your child. Finding out what she knows, and scaffolding her to learn more and develop competence and self-esteem, without being overprotective, overbearing, or dismissive. When we achieve ‘just enough’, there is an exchange of energy that is both nurturing and rewarding, for both parent and child. And it actually requires less mental and physical effort from us. Exhibition Rehang: 2 February – 21 February The second hang of Deborah Kelly – Bodies of Work, on exhibition at Penrith Regional Gallery, will open on the 2 February providing an exciting opportunity to see even more of one of this country’s most significant political artists. Deborah Kelly’s practice is socially engaged, highly political and challenges preconceived notions of gender and sexuality. The new rehang will feature The Magdalenes (Praise) (2011) (detail pictured above) and Penitence, which make reference to Mary Madgdalene, from Christian theology, a female figure reported in various guises; as a saint, as a prostitute, and as Jesus’s closest apostle. These life size nude women stare boldly out at us from behind Kelly’s sophisticated array of collaged elements, a beautiful and potent commentary on the social and political agency of women. Water is an integral part of the great Australian lifestyle, and with the prevalence of home swimming pools in communities such as Emu Plains and Leonay, it is very important that water safety is a priority at all times. Despite our very best efforts to stay safe around the water, we have in recent weeks been tragically reminded that lives are still lost to drowning. Children under five are the age group that is most at risk of drowning and the majority occur in and around the home. The Royal Life Saving Society’s 2015 report shows that a total of 271 Australian lives were lost between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015, with a 30 per cent increase in the number of young children who had died due to drowning. Most drowning deaths occurred in the summer months on Saturdays and in the afternoons. 80% of drowning deaths were male, and the highest percentage of cases occurred in NSW. I am always acutely aware reading this report that each and every case is so much more than a statistic, representing a very personal story that will have caused great sorrow for family, friends and communities of the person lost to drowning. Home pools and spas are obvious drowning hazards, but there are many other items and areas which present a significant drowning threat to young children in and around the home, such as buckets, bathtubs, eskies, fountains, fishponds, drains, inflatable pools, and even pet bowls. It is crucial that these are emptied, covered, put away and not left where they can fill up with water. Royal Life Saving Australia says that children need constant supervision when they’re in, on, or around any water, and that pool gates must be self closing and well maintained. Swim Australia recommends that all parents learn and regularly update their CPR skills, and that all children should learn to swim from 6 months of age to keep them safer in and around the water. Let’s look after each other this month, and not relax too much around the water at any time of year.

A Man Dies After Tree Falls - Emu Plains A man has died in Emu Plains after a tree fell onto a car he was travelling in last month. Just after 2pm on Thursday 14 January 2016, emergency services responded to reports a tree had fallen onto a car on Great Western Highway. On arrival officers from Penrith Local Area Command found the passenger of car, a man, had been hit by the tree and died at the location. The driver, a woman, was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. Officers have been told that the car was driving easterly on Nepean Street, when the tree fell and hit it. Australia Day Honours For Emu Plains Lion John is recognised and respected throughout the entire Lions Organisation for his long standing and valued contribution to the Organisation and to the Community. His direct involvement in Lions Club Projects is substantial. John was instrumental in the foundation of the Lions Clubs Chocolate Wheel - a fund raising project synonymous with Lions and Westfield Plaza, just celebrating its’ 30 year anniversary. He has been the Club Coordinator for the annual Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal for over 20 years. This task involved the recruitment and logistical management of about 80 collectors, supervising team leaders and support personnel annually to conduct the Door Knock in the Emu Plains, Emu Heights and Leonay region. For more than 20 years John has organised and coordinated the annual Christmas Tree sale in Emu Plains. Broadly, John has been involved in countless fund raising and community service activities throughout his career as a volunteer with Lions Clubs. A little bit of the country will come to town on the 20th and 21st of February with the Annual Luddenham Show being held for the 112th time at the Luddenham Showground. This year, the main arena will play host to not one but two jet cars. Joining the Daihatsu will be the never before seen jet powered van, making its debut. Brave country men will compete in the bull riding. Steer rides, poddy calf rides and cow tagging will also take place in the rough riding program. In other entertainment, there will be the dog high jump, where you can bring along your own dog to compete or watch the sheep dog trials. With a program that is bursting at the seams, you’ll find stage entertainment including singers, reptile displays, sheep shearing, dancers and novelty acts. Also open for the public to enter are events that include whip cracking, ice cream eating contests and a bush poet’s breakfast hosted by Australian champion Carol Heuchan. ‘Luddenham’s Got Talent’ talent quest will offer $600 in prize money for local acts, whilst country rock band ‘The Strangers’ will also feature. Mower Mania will pit the best of the best grass cutters in their speed machines against each other. Art, photography, cooking and farm produce displays will grace the historic pavilion. Animals of all shapes and sizes will come together to be judged. There will even be an animal nursery that the kids will love. Market stalls will also be a great attraction, not to mention, the fireworks display which will be provided by none other than, Fotis International. 1/2 Cup (50g) Walnut Halves 1 Tablespoon Honey 2 Tablespoons Pomegranate Molasses 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice 2 Teaspoons Dijon Mustard 1/4 Cup (60ml) Extra Virgin Olive Oil 180g pkt Haloumi, Cut in Half Lengthways + Thinly Sliced 1 Bunch of Rocket Leaves Coarsely Torn 50g Baby Spinach Leaves 1 Pomegranate, Seeded

Preheat oven to 180C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Scatter walnuts over the tray and drizzle with honey. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until walnuts caramelize. Remove from oven and set aside to cool. Combine the pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, mustard and 2 tbs oil in a screw-top jar and shake until well combined. Season with salt and pepper. Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add the haloumi; cook, turning, for 2 minutes or until golden brown and heated through. Remove from heat. Combine rocket and spinach in a large bowl. Drizzle with dressing and gently toss to combine. Arrange on serving plates. Top with haloumi and walnuts and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds. Serve immediately.

Slipped Discs – Not Always a Life Sentence! Disc problems are very common. Up to 81% of people will have disc bulging, 33% disc herniation (slipped disc) with no back-pain symptoms (Stadnik 1998). Lumbar-disc herniation is most common in people aged 30–50 years, men twice as likely as women. Many people (1-3%) suffer from disc related pain (Jordon 2009), often for years.
Discs are fibrocartilaginous joints between vertebrae. They take the weight on the spinal column, cushion vertebra during compression and act like a ligament holding vertebrae together. A spinal disc is a little like an old style donut. It has a fibrous tough outer layer (annulus fibrosis) that holds in an the “cushioning� softer gel-like inner core (nucleus pulposus). Three main disc issues exist. All can cause pain due to inflammation & nerve impingement. 1. Disc protrusion: disc remains structurally sound but bulges out at the sides. 2. Disc extrusion: the tough outer layer of the disc tears & part of the softer inner core protrudes through. 3. Disc sequestration: under extreme compression, all of the softer inner core material is squeezed out of the disc into the surrounding tissue. Chronic disc compression due to excess body weight and tight core muscles, or both, can lead to weakening & damage to discs. Extreme acute pressure during a lift can also damage discs. Definitely avoid strengthening the core or lifting if you have disc associated pain. The strength of the connective tissue that makes up the disc
is vital. Age and nutrition are the key. Older people generally have weaker connective tissues, but nutrition & eating right is crucial. Bone broth, greens, nutrient dense unprocessed and fermented foods provide nutrients to keep your weight optimal and your bones & discs strong at any age. Weight bearing exercise provides hormonal signals to build strong discs if diet is adequate. Leo The Guide Dog Puppy Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October 2015 and he graduated from Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in November 2015. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and Leo attended the Meet The Pups Day at Glossodia Guide Dogs Centre in November, a training session at Penrith Christian School in November, Christmas in the park at Surry Hills in December and a walk through the
streets of Penrith in December. It is great to see Leo catch up with his litter mates and be exposed to different environments. Leo is growing up so fast, he is through the chewing phase of life (well nearly!!), he is finally toilet trained and he is a cheeky little puppy. Camille’s other dog Pony is finally playing with Leo. Camille lost 2 of her other dogs (Callie and Bella) this year and when the new puppy arrived Pony was sooo not interested. Pony was never nasty to Leo, he just ignored him totally. Every day without fail, Leo would go up to Pony at least 100 times and say 'Hi my name is Leo, do you want to play?' and Pony would turn his head away and ignore Leo. It took Pony 7 weeks to start playing with Leo, and when they started to play together it was as if they were friends forever. Full on wrestling matches around the house and yard, sharing the beds, and licking each other's faces. Too cute! Pony obviously needed time to get over the loss of his 2 friends and accept the new pack member. Leo will be returned to The Guide Dogs when is about 1 year of age, where he will continue his training and hopefully succeed as a Guide Dog. Financial Top Tips for 2016 The kids are back at school, you’re back at work and 2016 is in full swing. Why not make this year the year you get your debt under control and start working towards another financial goal like buying a home or an investment property or saving for retirement or any number of things. Here are my top 3 tips for a financially successful 2016. 1. Budget. Budgeting doesn’t have to be confusing. Sit down with a cuppa, pen and paper and 3 months statements for your credit cards and bank accounts. Read through line by line writing what each expense/debit was for. Once you’ve done this group these expenses together on your paper. Groceries, Petrol, Fast Food, Utilities, Entertainment, etc, with a total for each. Add in any annual expenses that may not have appeared on your statements. Now you have a very accurate record of how you spend your money. Find areas where you can cut back and write a new list with a budgeted amount for the next 3 months in each category. Then in 3 months’ time, repeat the process and see how you did. 2. Debt Consolidation. Unless you are having serious trouble making repayments, consolidating credit card debt into your home loan is a TERRIBLE idea. All it does is make your home loan harder to pay off. A better solution is to do a “balance transfer” to another credit card offering 0% interest and pay off the debt before the interest free period ends. If you don’t have the spare income to do this, then apply for a personal loan with a 5 or 7 year term. Whichever way you choose, make sure you cut up your old credit cards. 3. Review your Home Loan. This should be an annual activity as the market changes so frequently and is very simple to do. Simply send us your last home loan statement and we will let you know if there’s a better deal in the market for you. 4. Make 2016 be the year that you got on top of your finances.
