Local Leonay resident and Panthers Tri Club member Luke Taylor travelled to Pontevedra Spain to compete for Australia at the ITU World Duathlon Championships, mid last year. Unfortunately for Luke he was plagued by injury in the lead up to the event hampering his chances of a podium finish. Luke spent the next twelve months working to overcome his injury and training hard to get back to form. He once again earned a place on the team to represent Australia at the 2015 ITU World Duathlon Championships held in Adelaide on October 18th this year. With his two young sons watching dad race for the first time, Luke put in a solid effort in his age group (30-34 AG-Standard) and was rewarded with a second place silver medal and a spot on the podium. Racing alongside Luke were fellow Panthers Tri Club members Adam Footit 2nd (30-34 AG-Sprint); Fiona Hornman 8th (3539 AG-Sprint); Naomi Dimech 20th (35-39 AG-Sprint); James Francis 24th (40-44 AG-Sprint); and John “Squizzy” Taylor [Luke’s dad] 6th (70-74 AG-Standard). Congratulations to all those who competed and a special congratulations to our Leonay local, Luke, on his podium finish.

FROM FROMTHE THEEDITOR EDITOR Here we are, our last publication for 2015. Someone once told me, that as we get older, each year passes by faster. The reasoning said to be behind this is mathematically based , in that the older you become, each year represents a smaller and smaller portion of your life. When you are ONE, a year is your whole life , whilst when you are 40, one year is only a small fraction of your life (1/40th) and each year seems to pass faster. An interesting, possibly useless fact! We have plenty more interesting stories to read in this month's edition! A story of strength, determination and success leads in our cover story, with more success to follow on page 5 as Fiona Scott MP congratulates our young and aspiring sporting stars. Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones and those near and dear. Spare a thought for those that are entering this Festive Season with emptiness and a heavy heart, whether it’s the first year or a repeat of many without that special someone, the pain seems to remain the same. Coo-ee March

It was an important day in our history, for it was 100 years ago that the men from Gilgandra on their Coo-ee march, reached our district. The men, over 200 of them, walked from Springwood to Emu Plains on 9 November 1915. They stopped for refreshments at Emu Plains Public School before marching into Penrith. They recruited 3 local men that night at the banquet and concert held for the Coo-ee’s. They stayed overnight at Penrith showground. The next morning they were off again. They stopped at Victoria Park, St Marys for breakfast. There another man came forward to join them. Within days they would be in Sydney and ready ‘to do their bit’. Many would die in England, France and
Belgium. We do remember them, on our memorials across the City, in our RSL’s and in the many homes from which they left. The Coo-ee re-enactment then marched through the City. What a great effort! We will remember them as well. The Lions Club of Emu Plains served scones with jam and cream plus lemonade to the marchers all funded by Penrith RSL. Have you been motivated by Bob’s story? How do you celebrate? The Carols always strike a chord with me. Some of the most often sung Carols tell a story. In fact, they’re a celebration of the story of the coming of Jesus. Fiona Scott Congratulates Young Sporting Stars

Fiona Scott MP, the Federal Member for Lindsay recently presented 11 young sporting stars from the Nepean region with a Local Sporting Champions grant of $500 each at a special ceremony at Westfield Penrith. The Local Sporting Champions programme is designed to support young people participating in competition at regional, state, national or international level as an athlete, coach or official. The programme continues to nurture talented young athletes in the region, giving them a leg-up when it came to pursuing their sporting goals. Fiona Scott MP said it was excellent to see so many grant recipients from the Lindsay electorate compete at a state or national level in a wide variety of sports.
“The grants are to assist athletes with costs associated with competing like travelling, equipment, uniforms and accommodation,” Fiona Scott said. “This is especially important for athletes living in the Penrith or St Marys area who compete on a national-level because many competitions are held interstate, requiring athletes and their families to spend more on travel and accommodation. “These athletes’ commitment to their sport and level of achievement is impressive. I congratulate all of the winners and wish them every success in their chosen sporting fields,” Fiona Scott added. Fiona Scott also thanked Westfield Penrith for providing the venue and the gift bags for the athletes. Westfield Centre Manager Paul Stonebridge said: “Westfield Penrith, along with our retailers, is a proud supporter of the Local Sporting Champions programme helping youth in our community succeed in their sporting goals,” Mr Stonebridge said. “We were honoured to host these 11 young sporting stars in the centre last night and want to congratulate them for all the hard work they have put in to receive this honour.“ This scheme is an initiative of the Australian Government whereby young people aged 12 to 18 can apply for funding to assist with the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when participating in a nominated championship. The Local Sporting Champions programme has a rolling application process and eligible young athletes are encouraged to apply. Lions Youth of the Year Quest

Look no further than swimming lessons. But why should we teach children to swim? My answer is always the same - swimming is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children, it is an invaluable lifelong skill that may just save their lives. Additionally, teaching children to swim from a young age promotes good health and fitness habits, and benefits in other areas of their lives, instilling confidence and providing an environment for healthy competition with peers. A recent study by Griffith University found that children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, giving them a significant advantage when starting school. Researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said ‘The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions’. I am also asked ‘How long will it take for my child to Learn To Swim? ’ Unfortunately, it is not a question I can answer simply, as every child is different, and learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process. Consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills, so attending lessons should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years. Regular lessons all year round allow your child to practise the swimming skills appropriate to their developmental stage and learn at their own pace. Not seeing much progress this month? As with any skill, it is normal for the child to go through periods of plateau, regression and developmental leaps throughout the process of learning to swim, but over time constant progress is being made. We usually say (as general guide) that your child has become a capable swimmer when they are able to swim 400 metres with good technique, without stopping, and without becoming exhausted. This level of skill may take children individual amounts of time to reach, but it establishes a strong swimming foundation. These swimming skills should then be retained in children over 7 years of age, whereas younger children need consistent reinforcement to maintain their competency. So think outside the (gift) box and give the gift of swimming lessons this Christmas!

The Lions Club of Australia with the support and sponsorship of the National Australia Bank, has hosted the Youth of the Year Quest for over 20 years, giving contestants the opportunity to be selected as the outstanding youth, to be an ambassador for his/her country and travel overseas under the auspices of Lions International. The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is designed to foster, encourage and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities of our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education. The judging is held over two days; with a preliminary interview where the student may wear casual attire followed on a subsequent evening by a public speaking dinner where the student must wear full school uniform. The student is required to prepare a five minute speech for the dinner as the public speaking section of the quest, as well as provide two minute answers to two impromptu questions. The Lions Club of Emu Plains ran their 2015/16 Quest last month. The contestants were; • Hayley McKenzie of Nepean Creative & Performing Arts High School • Kiara Auddino and Elayna D’Ermilio of McCarthy Catholic College • And Ainslie Harvey and John Nolan of Penrith Anglican College. What Have I Been Talking With Parents About This Past Month? A lot of parents have been very interested to know how they can determine whether the consequences they are giving their child’s mistaken behaviour are fair and reasonable, and designed to address the behaviour. First of all, consequences need to be related to the mistaken behaviour. Sometimes this can be tricky. But if the child has been jumping on the lounge, then taking away the soccer game on Saturday doesn’t make sense. The consequence is not related to the behaviour. A more appropriate consequence is allowing the child to sit on the floor for a little while. I use a checklist‌ • Is it positive? • Am I guiding and educating my child? • Am I teaching my child new skills and behaviours? • Will it maintain our relationship? I will give you a few scenarios, to see how this works. Scenario 1 A mother told me once how her parent would rip up her homework if she made one mistake. She would then have to do the homework all over again. What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this meet? Scenario 2 A mother told me how her young child was fussing at the dinner table. The mother calmly put the child’s plate to the side, and calmly told her child that she would return the dinner when the child could sit and be calm. The child was able to settle herself quickly and the mother returned the dinner saying “thank you for sitting so calmly, you are able to eat your dinner better when you sit stillâ€?. What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this consequence meet? You don’t have to be mean to your child for them to know better and do better. “Where did we ever get the idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?â€?Jane Nelson

Saturday 12 December is a date worth noting as it will be the Club’s ‘fresh’ Xmas tree selling day at Lions Park, Great Western Highway, Emu Plains. The trees will be $35 (unchanged from last year) and the net proceeds will be donated to the NSW Cancer Council later that same day at the Carols by Candlelight to be held at the Emu Sports Club. Lions will also organise the car parking (gold coin donation) and run the BBQ at the Carols. “It’s more than just a personal taste issue�, Jim Devine, Publicity Officer, commented. “Our customers firmly believe in ‘real’ trees for Xmas�. 2kg Frozen Rolled Turkey Breast 1 Orange, Juiced 40ml (2 Tablespoons) Olive Oil Rosemary Sprigs + Gravy, to Serve

Preheat oven to 180°C. Defrost turkey in the fridge overnight. Place in a large roasting pan with the foil on and roast for one hour 15 minutes. Remove the foil. Combine orange juice and oil together and use to baste the turkey breast. Return to the oven and roast for a further 30 minutes. Slice the turkey, garnish with rosemary and serve with gravy.

Line an 8 cup-capacity metal pudding steamer with plastic wrap, allowing a 2cm overhang. Break 10 biscuits into 2cm pieces. Combine ice-cream, biscuit pieces, custard, marshmallows, coconut, nuts and raspberries in a bowl. Spoon mixture into prepared steamer. Smooth top. Top with remaining biscuits. Freeze overnight or until firm. Stand pudding at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften. Turn out onto a plate. Carefully peel away wrap. Drizzle with Ice Magic. Top with sprinkles and cachous. Serve with custard.

Maggie Devine 16 is the leading Australian Irish dancer for her age group, with a stunning list of 1sts: National Champion, State Champion for 2013, 2014 and 2015, 2015 St Patricks Day, 2015 Australian International Competition, 2015 Hills Competition, 2015 Reilly Competition and 2015 Claddagh Competition. Maggie has represented Australia during the 2012 and 2015 World Championships in Belfast and then Montreal, gaining accolades for her technique, skill and performances. ‘I live for Irish Dancing’, said Maggie, ‘the music and movement thrills my soul and flows right through me!’ Maggie’s ambition is to win a World Championships and perform in Riverdance. Shailee Bartle excels in futsal and soccer. She has been selected to represent Australia in the U16 Girls Team and will tour Brazil in November, 2015. Shailee has been promoted into the NSW City Women’s Futsal Team which will compete in the National Futsal Championships, during January 2016. Selected again beyond her age group, Shailee represented NSW in the U19 Schoolgirls Futsal Team, which finished Runner Up during the 2015 National Schools Futsal Championships. With a host of winning school and club games and championships, Shailee has been appointed Captain of many teams. She represents Mt Druitt Rangers in the NSW Football Premier League 2. Shailee’s football career demonstrates similar prowess and she has represented her school, PDSSSC, Blacktown Spartans and City Central West. She has been invited to trial for the Football NSW Institute. Shailee sparkled as she stated ‘Futsal is an amazing sport. I love it! Football is my other love! I am lucky to receive a lot of support and encouragement from my school’. Competing in the huge 2015 Wide World of Sports World Dance Championships ESPN in Florida, Emily Woodhouse 14 and her doubles partner Frances, won a Bronze Medal in the Pom category; Australia’s first! Emily’s dance team, ‘Bradshaw Elite’, competing in the Dance Worlds Championships at Epcot, Orlando, were placed 6th in Jazz, 8th Pom and Hip Hop 11th. There were 18 teams from around the world in each category. Stunning results for Emily and her fellow dancers both prestigious World Championships. Emily has danced and represented Bradshaw Elite in numerous dance competitions, including Winterfest, NSW Dance Championships and Australian National Championships. At the Nationals, Bradshaw Elite won Overall Grand Champions, coming First in Pom, Hip Hop and Jazz. Emily excels as a dancer and her performances have reaped wonderful praise. ‘When I dance the music roars through me and my emotions are let loose and I seem to flow with the movement. I love dancing’, said an excited Emily. ‘When Frances and I won the Bronze Medal I couldn’t at first believe it and I just cried with happiness. Diagnosis Facet Joint Disease – Not a Sentence for Eternal Pain I often see facet joint arthritis on scan reports in clinic. According to some research between 15-45% of neck pain, 48% of thoracic pain and 54-67% lower back pain can be attributed to facet joint arthritis, while pain may also be referred to areas such as the head, arms, chest wall, buttocks and legs.1 So what are facet joints and why might arthritis cause pain? The picture below shows that individual vertebra are joined to each other by two types of joints: a disc joint; and 2 facet joints. Facet joints take only a small amount of your bodyweight. Their main job is to guide & limit movement of spine. They prevent excessive rotation & forward bending, and protect vertebrae from sheer (forward-pulling) forces. Facet joints have a good nerve supply and, if they become inflamed due to degenerative changes associated with the wear and tear of age, pain can result. But which type of back pain is actually due to facet joints? Very careful research on back pain sufferers showed that it was impossible to find ‘clinically’ any ‘typical pattern’ of pain referral due to facet joint arthritis.2 Facet joints ‘can’ be established as the source of some chronic back pain but only via a very complex procedure called a diagnostic block. Otherwise it’s difficult to say whether facet joint arthritis is the source of a person’s back pain or not. The best we can do is say ‘maybe’! Although anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed as first line treatment when facet joint disease is suspected3, radiofrequency neurotomy (cutting the nerve to the joint) or a lumbar facet joint nerve block (anaesthetic injection) are currently the only medically validated treatments for true facet joint pain4 . Importantly, both the diagnosis & the validated treatments are involved & complex, very invasive & not without risk. Even when anti inflammatory drugs have failed, many people with facet joint arthritis and back pain typically respond well to muscle elongation therapy. Specific manual therapy techniques & dry needling, can reduce pain & inflammation, and often remove the need for ongoing medications. Christmas Already? Surviving the Holidays Christmas is difficult after the death of a loved one. You’ll be seeing family and friends that you haven’t seen since your loved one died. Which brings the awkward questions that you don’t want to answer. It’s important you plan what you want to do for Christmas in order to minimize stress and the likelihood that you’ll be caught off guard. Making Your Plan Work 1. Gather your support network – First make a list of who you want to support you during this time. Next, gather them together to discuss all worries, anxieties and fears, open the lines of communication. Let everyone know how they can support you during this time. Remember to include children, they need to feel heard and to express their feelings 2. Decide on tradition – You may have traditions or rituals that you do every year. List them and brainstorm ways on making it easier for everyone. You might like to change traditions, make new ones or skip them until next year. You might also include your loved one in some way. 3. Roles and Responsibilities – Your loved one may have been the one who cooked, bought presents, wrapped them, organised celebrations, so, those shoes need to be filled. Discuss who will do these things and how they will be supported. 4. Include children – Let kids know that they can be sad, happy and excited. They don’t have to feel guilty about having fun. 5. Self-Care – Plan what you will do if things get tough, like calling a friend, going for a walk or writing in a journal. Christmas is about family and if part of your family isn’t there, the celebration is changed forever. I hope you find a way to celebrate without them.

Jennie Smith BVSc (Hons 2) Jennie grew up in the northern suburbs of Sydney where she first decided she would become a Veterinarian at the age of five. She spent two years studying Medical Science at the University of Sydney before entering the Veterinary Science degree which she completed in 2000. Early in her career Jennie spent time working in the north of England and in Wales. She was also able to pursue her interest in wildlife by volunteering at the Veterinary Quarantine Centre at Taronga Zoo for two
years. Since this time Jennie has worked at various small animal hospitals in western Sydney. Jennie is passionate about improving the welfare of animals and making a difference to all her patients. She feels all her patients are equally important and strives to make a difference through both prevention and treatment. Jennie is currently working part time as she has two young children, two dogs and a crazy feline who keep her busy the rest of the week. Jill the Puppy Preschool Trainer is Retiring Jill has been training puppies and adolescent dogs at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for the last 13-14 years. Jill is retiring to travel around Australia. Rachel and Lizzie, our veterinary nurses, will be taking over from Jill. They have been trained by Jill for the last month and are undertaking the Delta Dog Training program. We wish Jill all the best on her travels. We hope that Rachel and Lizzie can have a long and rewarding career in dog training like Jill has done. ‘Tis the Season to (over) Spend I guess it’s my inner child but I just love Christmas! The tree’s, the lights, the buzz of the crowds and the cheesy music playing in the stores, call me crazy but I love it all! But Christmas can also be expensive. Loan repayments are missed in December and January more than any other time of year. Credit Card debt also increases significantly and sadly, over spending at Christmas starts a downward spiral that ends in financial ruin for some people. To avoid a financial hangover the best thing you can do is create a Christmas Budget. It’s really easy and will take you just 10 or 15 minutes. Here’s what you do; • Write a list of all your Christmas expenses. Include everything, even the wrapping paper and ribbon. Assign a cost for each item. • Write down the name of everyone you need to buy gifts for. • Make sure you include holiday expenses. • Even if you’re not going away, keeping the kids entertained can be expensive, so budget for this too. • Once you’ve got everything listed, calculate the total. With total in hand you can then decide if it is manageable. You may choose to fund some of this amount with a Credit Card and if so, use a card with a low or 0% rate and plan to have it repaid before next Christmas rolls around. Expect to pay 3% of the outstanding debt as minimum repayment, so $150 per month for $5,000.
