Frank Brandt with his 300 International which his father Alvin restored before turning it over to him. By Les Kletke Ask Frank Brandt about the best feature of his 300 International tractor and the answer comes quickly. “My Dad restored it,” he said with a smile. “His finger prints are all over it. He restored it and gave it to me. So driving it is driving a bit of history and something that my Dad worked on.” It takes more time for him to find an answer to, “What could be improved?” “Well I think that model is plagued with oil leaks and I do have a couple of those,” he said. Brandt lives on an acreage near Giroux and uses the tractor around the yard for blade work and hopes to find a snow blower for it by winter. Frank grew up on the farm working with his father Alvin and it was usually an International tractor that provided the horsepower on the farm. “Both of my grandfathers had W 4 Internationals and Dad had International tractors when I was going up so I suppose it is a bit of a family tradition,” said Frank. Considering the number of tractors the company built it is not supersizing. It was during production of the 300 that the company produced its 3 millionth tractor. The run of 300s included 30,851 Internationals and 29,077 Farmalls and they were built in 1955 and 56. The 4 cylinder gasoline powered tractor sold for $2,900 in 1956 and was rated 38 hp on the drawbar and 42.6 on the belt. The 5-speed transmission with a torque converter was a relatively new innovation at the time and allowed for 10 forward speeds. “The torque converter works well and the tractor has a 3 point hitch that works well,” said Brandt. “It is in very good shape and after Dad got done with it, it is great tractor for around the yard.” The elder Brandt gave the tractor a new wiring harness and complete paint job before turning it over to his son. The pair participated in this year’s Tractor Trek with Alvin driving a Super W 4 reminiscent of what his father had. For now Frank Brandt is happy to have the tractor that his father restored and has no plans of adding to his collection. “The tractor runs fine and is handy around the yard,” he said. “I like it just the way it is.”
