Buying Local: How It Boosts the Economy “Buy Local” - buying close to home may be more than a feel-good, it’s-worth-payingmore-for-local matter. A number of researchers and organizations are taking a closer look at how money flows, and what they’re finding shows the profound economic impact of keeping money in town.

It needs to keep moving around to keep the economy going. When money is spent elsewhere—at big supermarkets, non-locally owned utilities and other services such as on-line retailers it flows out, like a wound. By shopping at the corner store instead of the big box, consumers keep their communities from becoming “ghost towns”. “Buy local” campaigns serve another function: alerting a community about gaps in the local market. For instance, if consumers keep turning to on-line or big-box stores for a particular product—say, socks—this signals an opportunity for someone local to make and sell socks. This is the way product
produce more locally? Of course you can if the raw materials are there, and the raw materials are often human beings. And what about that higher cost of local goods? After all, big-box stores got to be big because their prices are low. The difference falls away once you consider the increase in local employment as well as the relationships that grow when people buy from people they know. Another argument for buying local is that it enhances the “velocity” of money, or circulation speed, in the area. The idea is that if currency circulates more quickly, the money passes through more hands—and more people have had the benefit of the money and what it has purchased for them. If you’re buying local and not at a chain or branch store, chances are that store is not making a huge profit. That means more goes into input costs—supplies and upkeep, printing, advertising, paying employees— which puts that money right back in the community.
1. Shopping local boosts the local economy because more of the money you spend in your local independent business stays in the community then if you shopped at a big-box store or out of town. 2. Shopping local creates jobs. Small, local businesses are the largest employers nationally. When we support local shops and services, we are supporting the process of creating local jobs. 3. Local business support community groups. Local businesses are more likely to support local events, schools, charities and sports groups. When you shop at a local business you are in essence supporting your community. 4. Shopping local supports the character of our area. Our distinctive shops and services contribute to our quality of life and to the character of the area. Shopping local keeps these businesses here. 5. Shopping local increases our tax base. When you support and invest your day-today dollar in the RM and Town of Ste. Anne business you are contributing to our tax base which improves the services we all benefit from. No local business means higher taxes for everyone.
6. Local businesses invest in our region. When we support local business we support the future of our community. Businesses owned by Town of Ste. Anne and RM of Ste. Anne folks are less likely to leave the community and are more invested in our success. 7. Supporting local business encourages investment. Research is stating entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve and support independent and distinctive businesses. 8. Local business offers choices. Over the long term, successful local businesses are able to supply products based on local needs, interests and demands rather than based on national sales strategies. 9. Shopping local saves services. Private and public services tend to cluster around shops. As retail merchants disappear, so do services such as hairdressers, banks, restaurants, and other businesses. 10. Shopping local saves you time and money. By not travelling to out of the area shops, you are saving on fuel (money and the environment) and time. By buying local and what you need, rather than all those “deals� on your way to cashier at a big box store, you are saving money and reducing items that will just go to the landfill anyway!
