Founded by the Vikings, explore the winding streets of the oldest city in Ireland and imagine life in ancient times. The Viking Triangle is Waterford’s cultural and heritage quarter. Characterised by narrow streets, atmospheric public spaces and an array of cultural and heritage attractions, it is so called because of the 1000-year-old Viking walls which once surrounded it. The Waterford Greenway offers a glorious 46km walking and cycling off-road trail that runs from historic Waterford City to the beautiful town of Dungarvan along an old disused railway line. The Comeragh Mountains are framed in the background as you follow the River Suir across eleven bridges, three impressive viaducts and the 400 metre long Ballyvoyle (Durrow) tunnel, one of the most notable landmarks along its route. The Greenway is divided into six distinct sections with twelve access points, so you can do as little or as much as you like! There are wonderful places to stop along the way such as the magnificent Mount Congreve Gardens, home to one of the largest collection of plants in Ireland or you can take a trip on the Waterford Suir Valley Railway in the village of Kilmeaden. The village of Kilmacthomas marks the halfway point on the Greenway where you will cross the elegant and imposing Kilmacthomas Viaduct, built in 1878 for the Great Southern and Western Railway. The scenic Comeragh Mountains with tumbling Mahon Falls and magic road are easily accessed from Kilmacthomas. A further 13km along and you will reach Ballyvoyle Tunnel, also built in 1878, where you will walk along two more Viaducts. From here a 10km stretch of beautiful coastline awaits with incredible views of Dungarvan Bay and the shimmering sea before you arrive at the harbour town of Dungarvan.

The rich history of Waterford and East Cork is part of their charm. Step back in time in Waterford City, with history dating to Viking times. Tour the factory at the House of Waterford and learn all about the making of one of Ireland’s most iconic brands. Watch the glassblowers use special wooden moulds, one of the only companies in the world who still practise ancient mould-making. Visit the castle gardens at Lismore and the early Christian ruins at Ardmore. East Cork is full of quaint heritage towns, gorgeous scenery and golden strands. Wander the picturesque streets of Youghal, visit the iconic Clock Gate Tower, stroll its sandy beaches before travelling west to the bustling market town of Midleton to visit its famous distillery or the colourful town of Cobh, the last port of call for the famous Titanic.

The Deise – as Waterford is colloquially known – is blessed with beautiful beaches. There are wonderful stretches of sand at Ardmore and at the fishing village of Dunmore East, on the Ring Peninsula and especially at Tramore (Trá Mhór). Its 5km beach is lapped by the Atlantic Ocean, and the buzzy town is lined with amusements and shops that come alive in summer. Approach along the coast from Annestown for the most spectacular views of the bay, peninsula and promenade, with Brownstown Head beyond. Take the plunge into the refreshing waters from the diving board at the Guillamene cove, a scenic spot for strong swimmers.
