Follow the Medieval Mile, a discovery trail running through the city, linking the magnificent 12th century Kilkenny Castle to the 13th century St Canice’s Cathedral & Round Tower. Relax in the gardens or admire the magnificent architecture at Rothe House & Garden, the halfway point on the Medieval Mile. Ancient structures are evident around every corner. Visit the beautifully restored Black Abbey, founded around 1225, and home to one of Ireland’s largest stained-glass windows. The Hole in the Wall is a merchant house built around 1582 and is the oldest surviving Elizabethan townhouse in Ireland. Admire Talbot’s Tower, part of the city’s ancient walls, it is the best-preserved section of the city’s medieval defences. The adjoining Pocket Park displaying interpretative panels tells its fascinating story. Testament to the Norman influence, St. Mary’s Cathedral, completed in 1849 dominates the Kilkenny skyline.
