A Wander Through Peranakan History
Singapore

Private & Shared | Half-Day | Culture & Community
In the grand scheme of sights and scenes on offer in Singapore, a comprehensive story from the birth of Peranakan culture to its contemporary existence often remains overlooked and overshadowed by modernity. Mainly residing in eastern Singapore, Peranakans are one of the prominent ethnic groups in the country’s diverse landscape and descendants of settlers from China’s southern provinces who moved to the Malay Archipelago several centuries ago.
Our half-day tour explores the culture and cuisine of this bustling community, starting with a visit to the iconic Joo Chiat Peranakan House, where visitors can wear traditional costumes and take pictures. While passing by the charming streets of Joo Chiat, one can enjoy the sights of heritage shophouses, quaint stores, and other hidden gems that have helped evolve the Peranakan style over the years while remaining perfectly preserved for posterity.
No exploration of Peranakan culture is complete without a culinary adventure. So, we next visit a local eatery where one can indulge in the exquisite flavours of traditional Peranakan kueh-kueh (sweet and savoury snacks made from glutinous rice, coconut, and palm sugar) and tea, with authentic recipes holding sway over modern adaptations.
Armed with new information about Peranakan life and its historical impact since the inception of Singapore, clients are free to explore Joo Chiat on their own before returning to their accommodation.
