The Story of Gösta Berling was the first novel by Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf. The book follows Gösta Berling, a defrocked priest who finds refuge among some pensioners at a manor. He becomes their leader of sorts, allowing them to take power of their own lives. In 1924, the book was made into a silent film, starring Greta Garbo. This translation by Pauline Bancroft Flach was originally published in 1898.
