DIPLOMAREQUIREMENTS
InordertobeawardedadiplomafromtheAcademyoftheSacredHeart,astudentmust satisfactorilycompletethefollowingprogramofcourses.Studentsmustbeinattendanceforfour (4)years(considerationswillbemadefortransferstudents).Onehalf(0.5)creditisgrantedforthe successfulcompletionofone-semestercoursesandonecredit(1)isgrantedforthesuccessful completionofafullyearofcoursework.Thechartbelowrepresentstheminimumgraduation requirements.Anyvariations(suchason-lineorsummerschoolclassestakenforcredit),mustbe pre-approvedbytheAcademicDepartment,DeanofAcademic&CollegeCounseling,andthe DirectoroftheUpperSchool.

Eachspring,students(currentGrades9-11)plantheirscheduleforthenextyearwiththeirparentsand withinputandguidancefromtheirteachers,DeanofAcademic&CollegeCounseling,andUpperSchool Administration. Parentsmustsignthecourseregistration.Oncetheschoolyearhasbegun,studentshavean Add/Dropperiodtomodifytheirscheduleswithoutitbeingnotedontheirrecords.Enteringintotheninth grade,astudent'sscheduleisdesignedbytheUpperSchoolleadershipandcounselingteamandafter considerationofherhighschoolplacementtestscores,profilereportsfromhermiddleschool,andinput fromthestudentandfamily.
WithdrawalfromaCourse
Astudentmaydropacourseduringthefirsttwoweeksoftheterm.Astudentenrolledinacoursemust remaininthecourseasofthesecondweekofthesemester.Anywithdrawalfromacoursemustgothrough theAcademicandCollegeCounselingofficeinconsultationwiththeteacheroftheclass.
HonorsAndAdvancedPlacementCoursePlacementPolicy
EachstudentiscarefullyreviewedbeforebeingplacedinanAPorhonorslevelclass.HonorsandAPcourse placementisbasedonaprerequisitecourse,classperformance,studentinterestandfaculty recommendation.SomeAPcoursesareavailableonlyinalternateyears.Courseplacementisdonewith attentiontothestudent’sbestinterests.ForstudentstosucceedattheAPorHonorslevel,shemustmeet certainrequirements.
AdvancedPlacement(AP)Courses
IncoordinationwiththeCollegeBoard,highschoolstudentsaroundthenationareprovidedwiththe opportunitytotakecollege-levelcoursesandexamswhiletheyarestillinhighschool.Atthecompletionof thecourse,thestudentisrequiredtotaketheAdvancedPlacementExam.Basedonexamresults,astudent mayearncredit,advancedplacement,orbothforcollege.Requirementsvaryfromcollegetocollege.
AdvancedPlacement(AP)levelcoursesaretaughtattheAcademyoftheSacredHeartwhichallowstudents toexplorethejourneythroughcollege-levelacademicchallenges.Studentswilldevelopskillsandstudy habitsthatwillbevitalincollege. StudentsmayonlytakethreeAPCoursesinayear.Ifastudentwouldlike totakeanadditionalAPclass,theymusthaveacumulativeGPAof3.6andmeetwiththeDeanof Academic&CollegeCounselingtoreceiveanexception.Aweightingof0.2willbeaddedeachsemesterto thefinalgrade,conditionaluponthestudentsittingfortheAPExamanddemonstratingasincereattempt attheexam.

AdditionalAPcoursesareavailablethroughMichiganVirtual.StudentswishingtotakeanAPcourse outsideoftheAcademyoftheSacredHeartPlanofStudies,mustsubmitalettertotheDirectorofthe UpperSchoolandDeanofAcademic&CollegeCounselingstatingtheirdesiretotakethecourse,alinkto thecoursecurriculum,andparentalsupportpriortothestartoftheschoolyear.Theenrollmentfeefor thesecoursesaretobepaidbythefamily.On-lineAPcourseworkistaughtandgradedbytheeducator offeringthecoursethroughtheMichiganVirtualplatform.
ClassesTakenOutsideofAcademyoftheSacredHeart
Allnon-APcoursestakenoutsideAcademyoftheSacredHeartwillbelistedonthetranscriptbutwillnot becomputedintothegradepointaverage.ThetranscriptfromprogramsattendedoutsideoftheAcademy oftheSacredHeartwillremaininthestudent’spermanentfileaspartofthestudent’srecord.The enrollmentfeeforthesecoursesaretobepaidbythefamily.
RepeatingaCourse
Ifastudentneedstorepeatacourseduetoafailinggrade,shewillneedtoremediatethatgradeduringthe followingsummerandrecoverthecredittowardgraduation.Thismustbedonewithpriorapprovalofthe DirectorofUpperSchoolandDeanofAcademic&CollegeCounseling. Inthecaseofcoursesneededto remediateworkpreviouslydoneatSacredHeart,theofficialtranscriptretainsthelistingoftheoriginal course,withtheoriginalgradeandremainsapartofhergradepointaverage.Aswithanycoursetaken outsideofAcademyoftheSacredHeart,thesubsequentcourse,whereitwastaken,andthegradeforwork inthatcoursewillalsobelistedonthetranscript.
Incomplete
Agradeof“Incomplete”maybeusedinthecaseofillnessorothersuchextenuatingcircumstances,onlyby priorarrangementwiththeDirectoroftheUpperSchool.Atimelineforcompletionofthecoursework mustbesubmittedbythefacultymembertotheDirectoroftheUpperSchool.Failuretomeetthe predetermineddeadlinewillresultinthe“Incomplete”changingtoa“F”grade.Agradeof“ML”(medical leave)isusedwhenastudenthasanextendedabsenceduetoamedicalconditionand/orhospitalization. Thisindicatesthatthestudentwasingoodstandingbutwasunabletoattendschoolandthereforeunable toearnthecredits.

TheGradePointAverage(GPA)isbasedona4.0scale.AllAdvancedPlacement(AP)coursesareweighted byadding0.2pointsperterm.ReportcardswillindicateaTermGPA,reflectingthattermonly.The CumulativeGPA,theentireUpperSchoolexperiencetodate,isincludedonthereportcardandtheofficial transcript.Itiscalculatedbytotalingallpointsearnedanddividingbythesumofcreditsattempted.All non-APcoursestakenoutsideAcademyoftheSacredHeartarenotincludedintheCumulativeGPA.
InsufficientEnrollment
TheUpperSchoolDirectorandDeanofAcademic&CollegeCounselingareatlibertytocancelacoursein thePlanofStudiesbookduetoinsufficientenrollment.Theschoolisalsoatlibertytomoveastudentfrom onesectiontoanothersectionofthesamecourseinordertobalanceenrollment.
HomeworkGuidelines
Allstudentsareencouragedtodevelopsoundstudyandlearninghabits.InaSacredHeartschool, homeworkisusedtopromoteself-discipline,responsibilityanddecision-making,whichareallimportant partsofGoalV. Homeworkreinforcestheskillslearnedinthecourseandshouldadvancethecourse content.QualityhomeworkisanessentialcomponentofallAcademyoftheSacredHeartUpperSchool
courses.Studentsareexpectedtocommunicatechallengestheymayfaceandfurtherintereststheymay wanttopursue.Studentsareexpectedtousegoodtimemanagementandstudyskillsinbalancingtheir schedules.
SeniorSeminar
AllseniorsareencouragedtotakeSeniorSeminar,acoursewherestudentscultivatetheskillsandknowledge necessarytoconductindependentresearchandinquiryinordertoproduceanddefendtheirscholarlywork. Inthiscourse,studentsareexposedtocollegelevelresearchmethodsincludingquantitativeandqualitative researchdesign.Studentswillapplyresearchskills,synthesizeinformationfrommultipleperspectives, analyzeinformationwithaccuracyandprecision,andcraft,communicateanddefendevidence-based argumentswhileexploringrelevanttopicsthatappealtotheirinterestsandcuriosity.Theywillhavean external“conversationpartner/advisor”whowillhelpthemtorefineandsteertheirindependentresearch project.Studentswhomakenotablecontributionstothescholarlyconsensusontheirtopicwillbeinvited tosubmittheirfinalpaperstotheInternationalJournalofHighSchoolResearchforpeerreview.Onehalf credit(0.5)willbeawardedatthediscretionofthefacultymentorandagradeofPass/Failwillbeissuedfor theprojectandwillnotbecalculatedintotheGPA.TheSeniorSeminarProjectdoesnotfulfillany departmentalrequirement.
SeniorStudentAssistantPositions
Seniorswhohavemetalloftheirgraduationrequirementsmaybeconsideredforastudentassistant position.Thefinaldecisionismadebytheteacher,DeanofAcademic&CollegeCounseling,andthe DirectorofUpperSchoolandwillbebasedonthefollowing:student’spastandcurrentbehavior,promise inthefieldoftheassistantship,studentavailabilityduringtheclassperiodanassistantisneeded,student’s academicstandingandstudent’soverallleadership/positiveexamplewithinthestudentcommunity. Seniors,ifselected,mayonlyserveasanassistantforonesemesterearningaPass/Failgradeand0.5credits.
ASHWorksShopAssistant
StudentswillassistyoungerstudentsinanotherASHWorksclassbyhelpingthemlearnnewskills andcompletetheirprojects. ThisclassrequiresinstructorapprovalandpreviousASHWorksclass experience.
PEAssistant
ThisstudentwillworkwiththeAthleticDirectorandphysicaleducationteachersandperformtasks suchashelpingsetupforafterschoolathletics,assistingPEteacherswithclasses,andorganizing uniformorequipmentrooms.
ScienceLabAssistant:
ThisstudentwillworkunderthedirectsupervisionoftheUpperSchoolscienceteachersanddo suchtasksasinventorysciencelaboratoryequipment,setupscienceclasslabswiththeteacher,clean upsuppliesaftertheconclusionofclasslabs.
StudioArtAssistant:
Thiscourseisanopportunityforonestudentpersemestertodevelopleadershipskillsbyassisting withthemanagementoftheartroomandceramicsstudio.Thestudentwillneedtodemonstrate strongtimemanagementandorganizationalskills,aswellasanappreciationforthevisualarts.They wouldberesponsiblefororganizinganddisplayingartwork,formanaginginventoryand
maintainingsupplies,andfordevelopinginnovativewaystoencourageinterestintheart departmentamongtheupperschoolandthebroaderASHcommunity.

Choir-Grades9-12(0.5credit)
Thissemestercourseoffersstudentsanopportunitytorehearseandperformavarietyofmusicwhilelearningabout propersingingtechnique,harmonizingskills,andbestpublicperformancepractices.Studentswilllearnhowtoread musicwith sight-readingpracticeandmusictheorylessonsandactivities.Studentswillalsohavetheopportunityto selectandsharemusicoftheirchoosing.Comebeapartofthisfun,friendly,andwelcomingclass.Studentsare welcometotakemorethanonesemester.Attendanceateveningrehearsalsandperformancesisrequiredtoreceivea passinggrade.

AcademyoftheSacredHeart,BloomfieldHillsiscommittedtohelpingstudentsgrowintocollaborative problemsolversandtransformationalleaders.IntheUpperSchool,noprogramillustratesthiscommitment betterthanProjectTerm.Startedin1974,ProjectTermuniquelyintegratestheGoalsandCriteriaofaSacred HeartEducationbyprovidinganopportunityforstudentstoexpandtheirunderstandingoftheworldaround themandtheirplaceinit.
Eachyear,allstudentsgrades9-12participateinasevenmonthprograminwhichtheyleveragedesignthinking toexplorecomplexglobalissuesinpartnershipwithdiverseorganizationsandexpertsaroundtheworld,from PontiactoPeru.Thehighlightoftheprogramisaweeklongfieldstudyduringwhichstudentstravelwith UpperSchoolfacultytotheirpartnersiteforanimmersivelearningexperiencethatinvitesthemtostepoutside oftheircomfortzone,explorenewculturesandcommunities,andworkshouldertoshoulderwithnon-profit organizationsandexpertscommittedtoaddressingsuchissuesasclimatechange,homelessness,education equity,andforcedmigration.Whenstudentsreturntoschoolaftertheirfieldstudy,theyhavetheopportunity toapplyandsharetheirlearningwiththeSacredHeartcommunity.

Grade9Seminarisauniqueexperienceinwhichgrade9studentshavetheopportunitytoserve,developtheir academicandsocialemotionalskillsandexploreplacesintheirlocalcommunityincludingMetro-Detroit museums,andsacredspaces.Studentsareencouragedtosharetheirgiftswitheachotherandastheyengagein eachopportunitytolearnandunderstanddifferentperspectivesintheircommunityandtheworld.
ServiceLearning
TheServiceLearningprogramisanintegralpartofSacredHearteducationwhichseekstoeducatestudents towardsasocialawarenessthatwillimpelthemtoassumeanactiveroleinthecommunity.Westrivetodevelop instudentsacriticalsensewhichwillleadthemtoareflectiononsocietyanditsvalues.Eachstudentinthe tenth,eleventhandtwelfthgradeparticipatesweeklyataregularserviceplacement.Ninthgradestudents participateinopportunitiesinGrade9Seminartopreparethemforserviceexperience.CommunityService experiencescanincludeteacheraidedutiesinschoolclassrooms,hospitals,assistedlivingfacilities,localfarms, andworkingatareafoodbanks.Besidesourweeklyprogram,students(andadults)mayalsoparticipateina monthlySaturdayprogramatFocus:HOPEinconjunctionwiththeyoungmenfromtheUniversityofDetroit JesuitHighSchool(continuoussince1989).

AcademyoftheSacredHeartparticipatesinNHSEBwhichpromotesrespectful,supportive,andrigorous discussionofethics.TheEthicsBowlformatisrootedinongoingdialogueanddeliberation:aseriesoftwo-way
