Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed And Something Blue By: Pat Farrell

Tradition is usually the name of the game when it comes to weddings in the United States. Most American couples follow customs of European origin that may date back many, many years, but the weddings are all somewhat similar and usually follow some religious guidance but may vary depending upon the part of the country in which the couple resides. Today when one thinks of a couple planning to marry, they associate it with them being in love and intending to spend the rest of their lives together, but a few centuries ago that may not necessarily have been the case because at the time, even the word “wedding” referred to what the groom’s family was willing to pay for the privilege of their son marrying the bride. A traditional US wedding party usually consists of the bride, her closest friend as her maid of honor and other friends to serve as bridesmaids, while the groom will

select his closest friend to serve as his best man and other friends as groomsmen. The maid of honor is tasked with arranging a shower for the prospective bride, where the gifts are usually something the couple will need to start their lives together, while the best man arranges a bachelor party to celebrate the groom’s last night as a “free” man. Family and friends are usually invited to the ceremony and following reception, especially the couple’s parents, which is appropriate since they are most likely footing the bill for the occasion. Being a melting pot country most of the wedding traditions in the United States are not original as they are derived from other cultures, most of which stem from Europe. It is common for the couple to receive gifts during the reception, many in response to a register where the couple has entered the items they would like to receive. This is considered usual and occurs whether the wedding is elaborate or is scaled down to take place in someone’s home. But religion will dictate the way the rite is carried out. It is common in most religions for the father of the bride to walk her down the aisle to the altar where she will join the groom, who has been there patiently waiting for her to arrive. However, in the Jewish religion it is common for both the parents of the bride and the groom to walk their child down the aisle to a tent-like structure called a chuppah, a symbol for the couples coming together to create a new home, and the actual ceremony will take place in the chuppah. Prior to the ceremony the couple will have executed a wedding contract (ketubah) which the rabbi will read in the chuppah immediately after the ring ceremony. For a Hindu wedding, after the wedding date is determined (by astrology), the

festivities begin three days prior to the actual ceremony with a Pre-Party called the Sangeet where attendees dance and sing to celebrate the soon-to-be event. During that same day as the Sangeet the bride’s hands are decorated with elaborate artwork using henna (the darker the shade the better). On the wedding day the bride will wear a red dress, usually elegantly decorated, and her family and guests will be seated immediately upon arrival. Upon the groom’s arrival his family and guests will form a parade and enter the ceremonial grounds together. The father of the bride takes her to the groom and places her hand in his symbolizing that he is giving her away to the groom. The couple will be wed under a mandap, a decorated structure, where, in the middle, a fire burns. The ritual begins with a prayer to Ganesha, the god of beginnings and good fortune, which is followed by the couple exchanging a floral garland (jai mala), and then the groom places a necklace of black and gold beads on the bride. The couple will then shower each other with rice, red powder will be applied to the bride’s hair signifying she is married and then she departs with her husband throwing rice and coins over her head to show her appreciation for the time spent in her childhood home. Many of the Hindu customs are similar in the Islam faith. There are, however, many customs around the world that boggle the mind as to why they have become a tradition. For example, in France a really gross tradition is when the wedding guests fill a toilet bowl with all the leftovers from the reception, mix it with alcohol and then the wedded couple is expected to eat it all to fortify themselves for the arduous night ahead of them. In England there is a tradition in some areas where ribbons have been

placed between the layers of the wedding cake and before the couple cuts the cake, the single women pull a ribbon and the one that finds the ribbon with the ring charm is said to be next to marry. In South Korea there is a tradition where the guests tie the groom’s feet together and beat on his feet which supposedly encourages the groom to not disappoint the bride during his performance on the wedding night. A tradition in China requires that, starting one month prior to the wedding, the bride must cry for one hour each day. One week later her mother will join her, and then for the last two weeks, first her grandmother, and finally her sisters will chime in for the final week, all of which is to signify extreme happiness. Really? In parts of the Congo it is still a tradition for the parents of the bride and groom to negotiate a price for the bride and they consider this to be a profoundly serious matter; therefore, during the ceremony smiling is not permitted. In French Polynesia, on the Marquesas Islands, they have a tradition known as the human rug where, after the ceremony, members of the bride’s family lie on the floor lined up and the couple walks across them. Ouch! But, in Sweden they have a tradition where during the reception the bride leaves the room and all the single women get in line to kiss the groom, after which the groom leaves the room and the men line up to kiss the bride. In addition to wedding traditions there are also the wedding superstitions that play a part in what the couple considers important to watch out for on their special day. These include things like not seeing each other before the wedding or someone giving knives as a wedding gift, as it signifies, or could lead to a broken

relationship. In days of yore it was important to ward off evil spirits which is why the bride wore a veil so the spirits would not recognize her and since she was thought to be especially sensitive to the spirits entering her through the soles of her feet, the husband would carry her over the threshold of their new home. The ringing of bells at Irish weddings are also for the purpose of warding off evil spirits including the bells the Irish brides carry in their bouquets, while in Italy the newlyweds work hard at smashing something glass because the number of broken pieces is symbolic of the number of years the couple will spend happily married. In the Southern US it is important to

bury a bottle of bourbon at the wedding site a month before the wedding to ward off rain on that day. But take heart – they get to dig it up again after the ceremony to enjoy! Finally, we cannot forget the somethings old, new, borrowed and blue. The rhyme, dating back to the Victorian Era, and meant to ward off the Evil Eye was actually “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe.” The old was usually something sentimental passed on from a parent which represents continuity while the new represented optimism for the future and could be anything new such as the wedding gown. The something bor-

rowed is meant to bring the couple good luck especially when borrowed from a happily married relative or friend and the something blue as it stands for love, purity and fidelity, all essentials for the lasting marriage. And the sixpence (Britain) or penny (US) in your shoe represents prosperity for the couple. No matter which tradition determines how the ceremony will be carried out the hope is always that the couple should live happily ever after and have all the children God intended. When it comes to the superstitions about warding off evil spirits, the couple should not worry if they forget one as there is always someone around to tell them what they must do!

The Way I See It By Cathey Meyer

Back to School Fourteen years ago, loyal, long-time readers might recall a column about my favorite niece, Wilhelmina. Actually, there have been several columns, but this one was set in the peace of our family church and this first-time aunt was attempting to keep her neice ‘quietly entertained’ during the Mass. I was successful at keeping her quiet, but the giggles of our fellow parishioners was not my fault. Dear Wilhelmina was taking inventory of my purse one item at a time. As we all learned, I did not sort through my purse often enough, and the four-year-old’s purge of my purse possessions was much more entertaining than the robot priest’s interpretation of the weekly gospel. Little did I realize at the time, this tiny bundle of curiosity would actually grow-up and fly the pew. The genetics of Wilhelmina’s educational interests is often a mystery to our family. Somewhere in her learning years, she took a liking to confusing cyber exploration, mind-blowing technical development, and a goal to one day travel in space. I am fairly sure her exploration of

my purse did not ignite any of this, but possibly the ancient operations of my cellphone way back then piqued her curiosity about moving forward in time instead of back to the future. She is my tech support for all things electronic. Part of my lack of tech development rests in her flying fingers—what would take me hours online with a nice lady from India, she could fix in minutes, OK seconds. My sweet Wilhelmina was part of the Pandemic Class of 2020. After a stellar public education career, years of cyber oriented competitions, travel throughout the U.S. to reign as a top competitor in cyber security and cyber design, she suddenly was old enough to vote and speaking to me in a language I was clueless to follow. Her choice of higher education destinations were all located on the FAR East Coast. She ultimately chose Columbia University to dip her toe into the next unknown. It seems like just yesterday she was rebooting my computer and explaining to me why Justin Bieber was so dreamy. Now Justin is married, and I am

wondering how I will get all my pop culture updates and tech fixes with her so far away. Wilhelmina’s high school graduation was a YouTube event, as were all the high school graduations in the year of the pandemic. I scored on this one. The 8 AM pajama friendly event allowed for a cup of coffee with a spike of celebrated spirits to enjoy the computer screen walk by. We cheered not so much for her success but that we managed to figure out the YouTube and find her graduation all on our own. Maybe her work here is done. Thanks to Wilhelmina, I can Zoom with the best of them; GoToMeeting in a few clicks; Google HangOuts with some else’s email and Venmo with a weak internet signal. I will miss the easy hook-ups via her young fingers. Our family was heart broken at the loss of high school senior traditions she missed, but in her wisdom, she noted this was what a normal high tradition is in her time and every high school student had virtually the same experience. Yes, she missed prom, senior skip day and the final farewell to all her teachers, but as she pointed out, she really does not know exactly what she missed. Now we are playing the same song with her send off to college. There were big plans for a family venture to New York to settle her in and acclimate to the new surroundings. My sister could settle her in; I had shopping to do. Then the reality set in, maybe she would never see the campus of Columbia? Distance learning was the new buzz phrase in place of dorm roommate, build-

ing locations and cool drinking spots. New plan for the college fish out of water: She is travelling to New York City, ALONE. Two suitcase limit, one laptop, no roommate and a 14-day quarantine when she arrives from the HOT spot of Texas. To observe the fearless young is to take me back to my first days at the University of Texas at Austin: I wanted my mommy! It was big and scary and my parents left me with a bag of cookies, a six pack of beer (It was legal back then.), a quarter for the pay phone and directions to the bus station for my trip back home at Thanksgiving. I was only 70 miles from home, but I might as well have been 1500. I got lucky as my high school chums found me crying in the corner of my room and gave me a taste of university life I needed to kick start my higher ed experience in gear. Wilhelmina was born the year of 9/11 and never knew the fun of airline travel in the days of wandering terminal freedom. She ended her high school career in the middle of a pandemic and will never know the joy of a long, dull graduation and cap launch. Her back to school will not be shared with weepy relatives, excited and scared at the same time to lose our little one. She is not the least apprehensive. The departure date cannot come soon enough as she is ready to fly the coop. My only request is to be the first on the ‘family plan’ when she sets off in that spaceship to Mars. Her post-graduate work will be a blast—in another orbit and that is a back to school I would hope to witness.

6 months later… Where are you now? Can you believe it has been 6 months since Covid-19 started? Do you remember what you were doing when this first hit? Some of us were looking forward to filling our calendars with educational classes, family outings, vacations, work conventions, holidays and so much more. Ok, so Covid-19 showed up and unfortunately everything had to drastically change. It was weird at first and I took a step back to analyze the situation. What was I able to do or not do? What could I move forward with or what needed to be cancelled or rescheduled? What about our real estate organizations, conventions, or meetings? To say the least it has been a whirlwind of a learning curve. We’re having to quickly learn or relearn to be more flexible, cre-

ative, or becoming a one man/woman show (again) on certain tasks; especially if you had a team conveniently located in one place. Although this time can be tense and stressful, we need to remember that we are essential. We are considered especially important to our family, community, industry, and our economy during this trying time. As Voltaire said in the 1700’s and Spider man said (for the younger bunch), “With great power, comes great responsibility”. However, you can relate to this quote, it resonates. It resonates immensely that we cannot revert, delay, or outright shut down- mentally or physically. It is our time to move forward like an infantry, soldier on, hit the nail on the head and whatever you do- Do not give up!

Instead Shine, shine, shine! No matter what you do, have a smile, a positive attitude, a grateful heart and remember that things happen in seasons. Not the best time (by our standards) but this is a huge example of how sometimes no matter our preparedness or wish something, it does not always go our way. The thing to consider is not so much what happened (although important) but how we react during a time that is obviously out of our control. Now confession time, I’m a workaholic and seems that my life has been on light speed forever due to being needed in so many directions at the same time by what seems everyone else but me. Sound familiar? I’m sure I’m not the only one. The days go by so quickly and seem to not have enough hours in a day to complete all our tasks. Personally, I chose to take this time of separation from others and what seems a lengthy quietude to self asses both my personal and business life. It’s sad to admit but at times I wasn’t immersed in what I was doing. I was physically present but not my head. Many family outings, I was thinking of work or replying to clients or customers. At times I wanted one day to myself to sleep in late or get my nails done and didn’t follow through feeling the

guilt of not being available. I guess you can say I was on autopilot. To improve my situation, I had to remember why I got into real estate to begin with. It was because I care about people and love to help them find their dream home or manage their rental investment. Also, to financially provide for my family and to be my own boss and run my business how I choose. Ultimately it was to live a live by design. Since all this started, I’ve taken time to genuinely enjoy my family moments, make new memories and have taken that weekend cruise. I even deep cleaned my house to include reorganizing the garage. And in my business, wrote up a new business plan, designed new yard signs and logo and updated my database. The last thing is continuing my real estate education. It’s investment time for me and should be for you as well. Buy that other house or rental property, rehab your current home and lastly, take all the CE or designation classes you can. I leave you with the first sentence of the poem In a Dark Time by Theodore Roethke, “In a dark time, the eye begins to see”. Take this moment for yourself, to get to know yourself, improve yourself and you’ll be ready to face the world again through a new perspective.
