I’m Just a Busy – Body! “Busy, busy, busy!” My first memory of that phrase was from one of my all-time favorite childhood shows, Frosty the Snowman. I can still see and hear the evil little magician Professor Hinkle saying, “Busy, busy, busy!” in his high-pitched, nasal voice as he ran off to get busy writing that he was sorry “one hundred zillion times” so Santa would pay him a visit. I loved that movie so much because the little girl who helped Frosty was named Karen. (Apparently she is now old and asks to speak to the manager a lot, but that is for another column!) This last month seems to have been nothing but busy, busy, busy…even down to the moment a few days ago when someone asked me how to spell busyness! Our magazine designer is acting a little bit like Santa and telling me I will not get to look at pages unless I get this column to her so, like Professor Hinkle, I had to get busy, busy, busy writing since we are supposed to go to press tomorrow! A friend I spoke to earlier in the day said something to the effect of “you better slow down, because life is too short to be so busy.” I know there is truth in that…I really do…(seriously Mom, I do), but when I look at the things my “busyness” includes, it’s really all about people I love and those I love doing life with. Now granted, the parts of the past few weeks that have included ER and doctor visits because hubby fell at work and broke his elbow are not on my favorites list. Neither is watching your child recover from a painful major surgery, but what a blessing to get to be with family when you’re needed. What a blessing to have so much work to do when you return because there are many looking for work. What a blessing to live in a community where you can volunteer for non-profit groups who serve others. What a blessing to have a church family you can rely on and who loves you! I am not superwoman. I do get tired, and one of these days, I may write to you while visiting a friend in Alaska or South Carolina. What a blessing to have those friends! What a blessing this busy, busy, busy life is. Yes, I know life can be hard. Sometimes the busyness thrust upon us would never be of our choosing – like the medical issues I mentioned previously--but even moments like those can bring a blessing if you look for it. As busy as life can be, I will take that busyness any day over the boredom of sitting in a chair watching the “boob tube,” as my grandparents called the television. Those days may someday come… but until they do, you’ll likely find me busy, busy, busy…if you can find me at all!

Buckner’s Jewelry is part of the fabric of Huntsville. When did you open for business?
The word “time” has several meanings. Kairos is a Greek word for time meaning “a propitious moment for decision or action.” It is a moment in time as in, “I had the time of my life!“ or “Once upon a time…” Chronos time relates to the passage of time as in minutes, hours, days, months, and years. We march to the demands of this measured time every day. “Time” can also have an emotional component, as when cherishing a timepiece handed down by a loved one, whether it be a watch, mantel clock, or the quintessential grandfather clock which majestically stood watch over a family’s daily life and leisure. When such a treasured heirloom breaks down, it is time to find an expert to repair it. Enter Ann Buckner McDuffie, owner of Buckner’s Jewelry in Huntsville, Texas.
My late husband Thomas and I opened the doors on June 28, 1971, and Buckner’s has enjoyed 50 years of serving the wonderful people of Huntsville and surrounding areas. Mr. Buckner received a degree in Horology in 1963 from Houston Technical College. He did watch repair and taught me the clock repair business. He passed away in 1991. My brother Darrell Herzog joined the firm in 1976, and son Todd Buckner came onboard in 1983, both having earned degrees as jewelers from Kilgore Junior College. Darrell, Todd, and I represent over 132 years of continuous service to our faithful customers. There are many reasons to walk through the front doors of Buckner’s on any given day. One reason is to enjoy the warm and friendly greeting one receives. Another reason is to shop. What treasures can I find within those brightly lit cases? I always meet with our salesmen and make selections from their jewelry lines so we can maintain a good inventory of rings, bracelets, necklaces, chains, and earrings to celebrate any occasion. We carry the PiYaRo line of jewelry, along with Black Diamond necklaces, bracelets, rings, and other pieces. We also feature the sought-after Tahitian pearls from the black-lip oyster. These have a naturally occurring dark body and shimmer with an array of iridescent colors. Along with this, we offer a nice selection of gift items. And of course, Buckner’s carries a fine display of men’s and women’s watches from quality name brands. In addition to merchandise, we do watch and jewelry repair and are highly skilled and creative in jewelry design. And now to the crux of this article, namely clock repair. You have built a reputation in this field and are in great demand for this skill. Please share some information regarding this craft. Yes, I have repaired thousands of clocks over the years--mantel clocks, wall clocks, and grandfather clocks. Grandfather clocks were first introduced in 1670 and were also known by the name longcase, tall-case, or floor clocks. Usually 6-8 feet in height, they are freestanding and contain a pendulum inside. They are very accurate timekeepers, but over

the years have slowly been replaced by analog and digital clocks. And since they are declining in popularity, so is the need for those who repair them. This skill is slowly fading away. I do keep a full schedule, repairing all types of clocks, and am always thrilled to work on any clock to give it a new life.
that cherished timepiece work keeps me on task as long as it takes. I do limit my repair work to the clock’s timekeeping ability, and not to cosmetic finishes such as refinishing cases. And, for the last 30 years I have been the service technician for Howard Miller, a company based in Zeeland, Michigan.
As a horologist, one who repairs timekeeping devices, what type of repairs are generally needed?
Toting a 6-foot-tall grandfather clock into your store is not practical. What is your process to repair a grandfather clock?
Repairs run the gamut. As far as watches are concerned, Darrell, Todd, and I have a hand in doing minimal watch repair. Batteries are replaced while you wait. And, although not on site here, I have two watch repairmen who have helped me for over twenty years, one who works on Rolex watches, and the other who repairs pocket watches, automatics, quartz, and antique windups. Working on clocks is my passion, and I love the challenge each clock brings, some being quite simple to repair while others take the meaning of “challenge” to new heights. There are three companies I look to for parts, but sometimes the needed part does not exist. I have had to fabricate parts from scratch, and at times have had to design a part that will solve a particular clock’s problem. You can’t buy a wheel for an antique clock, so when one is missing teeth, I have to make new teeth for it. I use gold rather than silver solder because it is stronger and blends in to give a better finished look. I’ve always had an aptitude for operating almost any type of equipment, so the ability to think analytically has served me well for this role. And I am driven. Making
Mantel and wall clocks do need to be brought in, but I make house calls for grandfather clocks. To make a house call, there need to be three or four repair jobs in the same area and I will schedule them all on one day. If the clock cannot be repaired on site, I bring the movement, weights, and pendulum back to the shop. After assessing repairs, the customer is given an estimate. Once they approve the work, the clock is repaired, cleaned, and then I time it out. To time it out, making sure it is keeping time accurately, I adjust it every morning. Sometimes it takes only a day to time it out while other clocks may take up to three weeks. Changing the suspension throws everything off so this can be a slow process. A one-year warranty is included on all clock repairs. Where does your clock repair customer base extend, and do you have repeat customers? My business is driven by word of mouth, and I will travel in about a 75-mile radius around Huntsville for repair jobs, but will not go to Houston. Some of those customers can be

referred to resources in their areas. Once I have finished a repair, I place a Buckner sticker, dated at the time of repair, inside the clock. One clock was brought in that I had worked on 27 years before. I remembered the clock. You might say that I have bonded with each and every clock that has been left in my care. Another repeat customer lives in Cody, Wyoming. Of course, I didn’t travel there, but these are Huntsville friends who moved to Cody and then brought a clock in during a visit to Texas. We see some unusual clocks at the store. At the present time, there is a Western-themed clock on the wall that is being timed out.
At each hour, a horse head pops out and whinnies, and then the sound of clippetty-clopping hooves is heard riding through the airways. I’ll remember this one for sure! All of us at Buckner’s will remember this one! At present, there is a 100-year-old Ogee clock on my work desk. The movement is driven by two big weights, and I’m working on an assessment now. I am always so pleased when family members choose to keep an heirloom clock. One couple questioned me

on the value of keeping the “hand-me-down” they had received. Taking my advice, they have since thanked me many times over for the enjoyment it has given them. Of course, it is not unusual to see antique clocks at garage sales with $5.00 price tags on them. Such a shame that they were not valued. And there are times that people bring clocks into the store they don’t want. I repair these and donate them to the Catholic Church Bazaar in Anderson, Texas, each year. Do you offer advice on how to pack a clock for shipment and on what regular maintenance a clock may need? I will do a house call to pack a clock for shipment, then show them how it should be unpacked. And maintaining a clock is easy. Don’t do anything. The clock will tell you when it is “sick” and needs attention such as when it quits running or is not chiming. A grandfather clock should last 12-15 years
before needing any maintenance or repair. And don’t oil a clock. It doesn’t want to be bothered! Keeping with the “clock” terminology, how do you unwind when not at work? I love yard work and being outdoors. It is my way to unwind. I also love to hunt and fish and was always the one child out of six of us who would go fishing with our daddy. In our later years, he and I would go hunting in the hill country and I’m happy to add that this love for the outdoors is being passed down to our family’s next generation. And our family has loved this area and the many friends and loyal customers who have become a part of our lives.

The Futility of Reasoning with Children Many (if not almost all) of today’s parents believe in magic words. They do so because the mental health professional community has (for fifty years or so) told them children can be reasoned with, a claim that exposes the general lack of intellectual rigor in the mental health professions. Magic words are words parents believe will magically change a child’s attitude or behavior. Parents who believe in magic words are often found explaining to their kids why certain behavior is hurtful, counterproductive, irresponsible, or just plain wrong (albeit they try not to use that word, lest it precipitate a psychological apocalypse). In these one-way magic word sessions, said parents are searching for words that will fill their children’s brains with enlightenment. When enlightenment does not occur – as evidenced by relapse of the attitude or behavior in question – said parents try again. The victims of these attempts to find magic words pretend to be listening as their parents carefully explain why their behavior represents “choices” that are not looked upon favorably and will not advance them toward riches and fame. When the parent in question has exhausted his supply of hopefully magic words, he asks the child the magic question,
“Do you understand?” to which no child has ever answered, “Not quite, Dad. Can you go over that part again about how what I did hurt Billy’s feelings?” The child answers, “Yes,” which is reliable indication that the parent’s magic words went in one ear and out the other. The child knows “Yes” will bring a blessed end to the stream of nonsense coming from the parent’s mouth, so “Yes” it is. And so it goes. The behavior and the magic word cycle repeats. Children do not change their behavior or attitude because of magic words. They make changes in their lives as the result of trial and error – the latter, mostly. In other words, they change their behavior because of life experience. An irresponsible child cannot be talked into responsibility. A rude child cannot be talked into graciousness. A defiant child cannot be talked into obedience. Furthermore, it is a rule--the more parents talk, the less children listen. It is also a rule that the more parents talk, the less authoritative they sound. Instead, they sound persuasive, and parents who sound persuasive do not sound like authority figures. Generally speaking, getting a child to move off square one requires an offer he can’t refuse: what I call a “Godfather” offer. (If you’re scratching your head at that one, you’re under the age of fifty and need to watch the movie.) “According to the world’s leading expert on the subject, your seeming inability to do what you are capable of doing in school means you aren’t getting enough sleep. So, until your grades come up to par and stay there for four weeks straight, you are going to bed, lights out, immediately after dinner whether your homework is done or not. We are hoping that your sleep deprivation is cured in short order.” Those are magic words.

When the “Mighty T” was retired in 1948 with plans to become a museum ship, the Texas Legislature established the Battleship Texas Commission to care for the ship. The commission fundraised to cover the $225,000 cost of towing the vessel from Baltimore to San Jacinto State Park, but ultimately found their funding was not up to the task of maintaining the ship. Disrepair set in. By the late 1960s, the wooden deck had rotted and was replaced with concrete (which eventually cracked and leaked). In 1971, the Brown Foundation, the Moody Foundation, and the Houston Endowment contributed $50,000 to sandblast and paint the hull. In 1983, the legislature turned control of the ship over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and abolished the commission. After extensive survey and assessment, a plan was formed for dry dock and repairs, and $15 million was raised in a five-year fundraising campaign. The ship was towed to Galveston and repaired during 1988-1990. TPWD adopted a master plan in 2004 that called for more permanent repair and restoration. In 2007, Texas voters approved $25 million in funding for the project, to be supplemented with $4 million by the Battleship TEXAS Foundation (BTF), a nonprofit support organization. TPWD has spent over $54 million maintaining and repairing the ship since 2009. This included critical repairs to engine rooms and adding an emergency generator, additional
pumps, and fuel storage to help counter leaks. The legislature passed a bill in 2019 providing $35 million to tow the battleship and repair it at a dry dock. The ship also closed to the public that year, and the BTF and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department entered a 99-year memorandum of understanding/lease (MOU) whereby the BTF would operate and maintain the Battleship TEXAS for TPWD and the State of Texas.

reassembly. Two of these guns are having their breech blocks reassembled and placed correctly into the gun itself. The other two are having their ball bearings replaced.
Here’s an update on the restoration process. In spring of 2020, BTF staff removed the ship’s ten 3”/50 caliber guns, eight of ten quad 40 mm Bofors mounts, and all eight 20 mm Oerlikon guns with the assistance of Taylor Marine and Certified Pipe Services Houston. The guns were taken to an offsite warehouse provided by NRG, where staff and volunteers have been able to restore these guns on a component level. The equipment and services were made available by many generous supporters, such as NRG, CPS Houston, Texas Bearing Services, Taylor Marine, and many others. Volunteers worked over 860 hours
The ship’s bell was removed from the main mast and taken to the offsite warehouse last year. Recently, intense efforts have been made to thoroughly conserve the bell and ensure it will last for another 100 years. To this end, OnAim Conservation spent time diligently treating corrosion on the bell and polishing it. They wrapped up their work after applying a protective wax coating to the bell’s exterior. You might say the bell is now looking ship shape! Much assessment of structural integrity, modeling, and simulations have been part of the process to determine if and how the ship can best be towed to dry dock. team) and Resolve Marine have been working on tow prep for the ship. Simply put, they have been filling the blister tanks (the tanks that are on the outside of the ship and have been a constant source of flooding) and some select interior tanks with closed-cell foam. As simple as that sounds, it is not very simple or quick. Prior to each tank being foamed, it has to have as much water and mud pumped out of it as possible (to maximize the volume of foam and minimize the water volume). Then tanks have plastic sheeting draped over any standing water and on areas to prevent the foam from sticking, and finally the foam is sprayed in. The foam has been used widely in the maritime world because it has the advantages of being buoyant, displacing volume, will give some structural strength back to the tanks, and is removable and less damaging to the ship. The foam will be removed in the shipyard (high-pressure water removes it very well). A single trial tank was filled first and evaluated after one month to ensure the process was efficient and would work as planned. The overall process involves upwards of 900,000 gallons of expanded foam in as many as 47 tanks. These efforts have reduced hull leakage from 2,000 gallons per minute to less than 5 gallons per minute. One of the conditions of state funding for the repairs was that, once the ship is removed from San Jacinto, it does not return, but is relocated somewhere it can generate more revenue with an increased number of visitors to offset operations and upkeep costs. cities submitted proposals to be the new home of the Texas, and no final decision has been announced. The foundation had a study done in 2016 that projected as many as 283,000 visitors and $3 million in annual revenue if the battleship moved to Galveston. Before closing to the public, the battleship typically attracted about 88,000 annual visitors and $1.3 million in revenue at its current location. Likewise, the repair location is not finalized. Several dry docks in states around the Gulf were in consideration. Discussions have been taking place with a repair facility in Galveston, but an agreement hasn’t been finalized yet. There is no projected date for the reopening of the Texas Museum yet, but soon YOU will be able to see the ship’s bell (and more) in person. The Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston has graciously offered to host a Battleship Texas exhibit in their Warbird Ready Room.

Pursuit of Happiness As we approach Independence Day, I often reflect on what it took for 56 men to sign the original Declaration of Independence. As they signed that document, they were vividly aware of the consequences of their actions – they were committing treason. An offense punishable by death, and yet they signed anyway. They risked everything to create the greatest country on this planet. A place that has provided countless opportunities to anyone willing to work hard for what they want. I wonder what they would think of what America has become today. I took some time to read the declaration again recently. It always strikes me that they only named three “unalienable Rights”. Those three are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. There are a lot of things that many of us consider “Rights” today, that never found their way into the Declaration, or the Constitution, or the Bill of Rights. Yet, we think somehow it is a Right. I am not going to preach on my beliefs, or what I think our Rights are, but instead talk about just one that was named in the Declaration of Independence. The right to Pursue Happiness.

Houston native and renowned photographer Ray Redding, aka TexasRedd, stands with works from his latest project that showcases art found where you’d least expect it – on the streets of Houston.

If you are a fan of live music and have ever visited Houston’s iconic Mucky Duck, Goode Company’s Armadillo Palace, or The Heights Theatre, chances are you’ve seen Ray Redding. No, he’s not a musician with a guitar strap over his shoulder– he’s the man with a camera around his neck. Gifted with an incredible talent for storytelling through a photographer’s lens, Ray, also known as TexasRedd, has covered the walls of these popular music venues with photos of singers, songwriters, and bands who have made tour stops in the Bayou City. For 30 years, Ray has made a name for himself in the music industry, but when the pandemic halted life as we knew it, it also put the brakes on his livelihood. As the world tried to “flatten the curve,” he looked for ways to occupy his time. His wife Jen admits she was worried he would go stir crazy, but instead, he started riding his bike in downtown Houston and soon discovered art where he never expected it.
How different did the downtown streets of Houston look in the spring of 2020? During the first three months of COVID, the streets downtown were a ghost town – it was amazing! We’d go out on a Sunday morning, and I’d stand in the middle of an intersection and have not one iota of fear of getting run over. You could literally see all the lights turn green, going all the way from the south side to the north side of the main streets. And there were no cars. It was crazy.
So, how did you discover this hidden art on the streets of Houston? Think about the nature of riding a bike. You’re always looking forward and looking around, and you look down a lot because you want to make sure you don’t hit a seam or a pothole. So, I’m riding along and start to see a pattern show up, and I’m like oh my gosh – there is art in here. Because of the general condition of the streets and the paint marks made by road crews, it looks like some kind of hieroglyphics. The markings have a meaning to the people on road crews. Some of them are where power lines are or where main water lines run. Add the sun baking down on the roads and cars driving over them, and it’s an ever-changing pallet of art.
The photos are incredible. What are you looking for that makes you stop riding and take a photo? When I ride my bike, they jump out at me. Jen will go with me on bike rides. If she sees me grab the camera, she knows she’s going to have to be prepared for multiple stops, and she has done it enough times with me now that she is a good spotter. I’m looking for shape, texture and color. I guess what attracts me is the relationship of those things. I can see a red stripe on a texture, but if it doesn’t

look like it’s working together in an integrated sort of way in my mind’s eye – then it’s not true. But I will revisit an area sometimes, and there is something that I passed on initially

I have received so many great comments on social media. The project has been very wellreceived. I think one of the coolest responses I’ve gotten is when a man saw me downtown while I was taking pictures. I was on a fairly new trail on Austin Street, between the main HCC campus and the Pierce Elevated. I’m out there on the street taking a picture of distressed paint on a manhole, and I’m focusing on composing the shot. All of a sudden, I hear this British voice say, “Excuse me!” I turn around and see a man marching toward me and he said, “What are you doing?” I said, “Well, I’m taking a picture of this manhole with art on it.” And then he said, “You take pictures of manholes?!” I started to explain that I do street art, and he was so excited and said, “Oh my gosh! I’m going to tell my wife! I shoot manholes. I am going to tell her, so she knows I’m not crazy!” He was charming, and it was just so funny! And now we are mutual fans of each other and follow each other on Instagram.
Do you have a favorite photo from your street art collection? Sometimes I like the ones that are simpler and more subtle. Other times, I like the ones that are more garish. There is something for everyone in that mode. If you like really
organized or Mondrian-style art or have rules, there’s stuff like that in there; some look like naturally occurring graffiti – it’s so haphazard. Some of my photos look like flags to me
because of geometric shapes. I have done hundreds of these, and if I had to pick my favorite ones, they would change by the week.
What motivates you in your artistic journey? Jen has said, “You are always in the pursuit of joy. You are always looking for that joyous
moment.” She said that, and I thought – I’ve never really thought about that before. Jen: To me, his art in general has always had this element that interconnects everybody
at a moment. It’s the same in the live music photography and other art he has done. It’s about connection and joy and catching the moment.
What do you hope people feel when they see your street art? I think the thing I want people to take away is the street is just a thing that transports you

from point A to point B, and you never really think about it at all. Or, if you do, it’s about potholes and cracks and things that make you lose a hubcap. You really don’t think about it for anything other than what its intended use is. And if you look at it in a very macro way, the way I’m doing it – just little segments at a time – there’s a really interesting story going on there. Again, there’s color, texture, and pattern…and the ah-ha moment, or takeaway, is – wow, I’ve never really seen the street in that kind of way.

Jen: A takeaway for us was we did not realize the extensive bike system Houston has. Had COVID not happened, we would not have discovered this extensive opportunity to explore the city. We knew the main trails along White Oak and Buffalo Bayous, but the ones that went all over town and to other parts of town – we did not know existed. And they are still building more. Ray and Jen continue to enjoy the unique scenery and art the Houston bike trials provide and admit they will never look at the streets of Houston the same. Fortunately, live music is back, and Ray is back in his natural element. Creative Corner “Mom”

Sitting quietly on the couch, reading and sipping the same cup of coffee I have warmed up three times now, I hear a familiar sound. “Mom!” It’s faint enough for me to ignore. She’s done this to me so many times, I know the drill. “Mom!” I know it’s nothing that urgent. She just wants to know I am there; that when she is feeling too tired or lazy to get up and get what she wants, she can cry out for me. “Mom!” It’s a little louder now. I look over at my husband. He’s a good accountability partner. He knows we have been here before, and he also knows that my motherly instinct to care for my offspring can take over my brain, which reminds me that at 16, my child can and should go beyond that one-word plea for help. “Mom!!!” I start to get up and hubby looks at me in a way that tells me to sit down again. “I hear you, child! What do you need?” I shout back. “Mom!!!” “Use your words! If you tell me what you want, I will try to help you!” “Mom!”
Silence. I wonder if I have won this battle. I know I haven’t won the war, or we wouldn’t still be here after all of these years. I really should have been tougher on her when she was two, I think. Mommy, the all-time softy, always came running. She knew that then, and she knows it now. She may be 18 months away from adulthood, but she will always be my baby. The arms that cradled her as an infant are the same ones that now hold her when she’s heartbroken over a boy and bring her chicken noodle soup to nourish not just her body, but her soul. “Mom,” she says quietly as she walks across the room and snuggles on the couch next to me. “Look at my eye!” Her eye is a little red, nothing that a warm washcloth made into a compress won’t fix. She knows that. She could have taken care of it herself. But then, that wouldn’t be the same. For all her assertions of independence at the ripe old age of almost-adult, there is one thing she never outgrows. “Mom!”

Wildlife Wonders GIVE TURTLES A BRAKE!

There are four species of venomous snakes in the United States, and guess what? They all live in our area. They are Copperheads, the Western Cottonmouth, Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes, and the Coral snakes. COPPERHEADS – The adult is about 30 inches long with a coppercolored head. They are social snakes and may share a den with other species of snakes. They are carnivores and eat mostly mice, but will also dine on small birds, lizards, amphibians, and insects. Copperhead venom is the least toxic of all the venomous snakes, and the bites are rarely fatal; however, the bites can cause severe damage to tissue and can cause serious secondary infections. Copperheads tend to freeze when surprised, so they often get stepped on and react with a bite. WESTERN COTTONMOUTH – This snake is the only venomous water snake in the U.S. and is also known as the Water Moccasin. They also enjoy basking on dry land. Most adults are between 30 and 42 inches long. When frightened, the snake will open its mouth exposing bright white skin (like cotton). This is how the snake got its name. They are grayish-brown in color with few (if any) markings. They eat frogs, fish, smaller snakes, small water birds, small mammals, and sometimes fish. Cottonmouths swim with their heads out of the water. Cottonmouths CAN bite underwater, but your chances of being bitten are slim. They
avoid contact with humans. If bitten, their venom is very potent, but fatalities are very rare. WESTERN DIAMOND-BACKED RATTLESNAKES – This is the most abundant snake in Texas. It prefers sparsely vegetated, arid areas, so we don’t see many of them around here. It is the second largest venomous snake in the United States and can get over seven feet long. The Eastern Diamond-backed is larger. When threatened, the snake will rattle its tail--which means “stay away.” Most fatal snakebites, however rare, can be attributed to rattlesnakes. CORAL SNAKE – Although venomous, they are considered less dangerous than rattlesnakes because they have a less effective poison-delivery system.

They are usually between 18 and 20 inches long. Their most distinctive characteristic is their brightly colored bodies. They eat lizards, frogs, and other small, smooth-scaled snakes. The venom of the Coral snake is highly toxic, but the bite is rarely fatal. It can take many hours for symptoms to occur after a bite. There will be no swelling or pain--but left untreated, slurred speech, double vision, and muscular paralysis will occur. There are other non-venomous snakes that look similar to Coral snakes, so to avoid confusion, remember this: Red next to yellow can kill a fellow. Red next to black is a friend of Jack. WHAT TO DO IF BITTEN If possible, take these steps while waiting for medical help: • Remain calm and move beyond the snake’s striking distance. • Remove jewelry and tight clothing before you start to swell. • Position yourself, if possible, so the bite is at or below the level of your heart.
• Clean the wound, but don’t flush it with water. Cover it with a clean, dry dressing. Caution • Don’t use a tourniquet or apply ice. • Don’t cut the wound or attempt to remove the venom. • Don’t drink caffeine or alcohol, which could speed the rate at which your body absorbs venom. • Don’t try to capture the snake. Weight Loss In Horses Whenever we think about changes in body weight, there is a specific thought process used to identify the reasons for it. This approach is based on an understanding of the balance between a given horse’s energy intake and energy output. Weight loss results from an imbalance between caloric intake and expenditure of energy. Factors that affect either or both intake and outflow will change the balance and affects a horse’s weight. If there is more energy expenditure than caloric intake, then a horse will lose weight. To determine whether a horse is underweight or not, it is first important to know what their optimal weight should be. This is a very subjective assessment. The closest we can come to making an objective judgment is through an established Body Condition Score System, which rates horses on a scale of 1-9. On this scale, 1 is emaciated and 9 is obese. Body condition scores of 5 to 6 are considered optimal. This system is based on assessment of the muscle and fat that cover the bony landmarks of the body, especially of the top-line and ribs. Healthy body systems and metabolism result in the nutrients in the bloodstream being processed, with the necessary energy used and the remainder put into body stores in the form of complex sugars, muscle, and fat. Anything that decreases nutritional intake, with all else being equal, will result in weight loss. Therefore, the most common reasons
for weight loss in horses are: • Inadequate feed intake or feed quality mismatched to nutritional needs. • Inadequate processing of feed resulting from dental problems. • Parasite infestation. Parasites compete for nutrition and cause damage to the intestinal tract, which decreases absorption of nutrients. • Aside from dental abnormalities, older horses simply have more difficulty assimilating nutrients from their intestinal tract. For that reason, they require more easily digestible and absorbable feeds. • Disease- Sick animals lose weight because energy is needed to heal or fight infection; this is often made worse because they tend not to eat as much. • Animals that are in chronic pain also lose weight. Tumors are a common cause of weight loss in older horses. Many tumors secrete substances that directly cause weight loss by breaking down body stores of energy. When designing a feeding program, keep in mind the basic metabolic differences among breeds and individuals. A young Thoroughbred racehorse will be a much “harder keeper” than a 10-year-old Pony gelding. Breeding stallions, late-term pregnant mares, and lactating mares are all fed to account for their additional energy expenditures. Within breeds, certain individuals will be harder keepers than others. The basis of most equine feeding programs is good quality forage or hay. Many idle horses without special needs maintain healthy weight on grass hay alone. Make sure all horses are on an appropriate parasite control program, and keep them all in good dental health. It is always best to work with your veterinarian to identify and treat underlying health problems causing weight loss.

Recently, I have begun a new adventure with my oldest son. We will be opening a Skateboard Store in June. With a new skatepark scheduled to be open in Huntsville in August of 2021, we want to be able to provide skateboards and more for kids who want to be skateboarders. In addition, I am working with the Walker County Referral Cooperative (Welcome2WCRC.com) to raise money to provide fifty free skateboards to children in our community at the grand opening of the skate park. We are partnering with Boards4Bros.org, who will be providing giveaways and bringing skate instructors to teach the kids how to skateboard.
The reason why I began real estate originally was because I wanted to invest in real estate. That is still a dream I have not yet fulfilled. I do what I do because of my family and because I appreciate the opportunities we have as Americans. I love being able to have a vision of something I want to accomplish and make it happen. I am a bulldog for my clients. I represent them as if they are myself. I help them get the best deal, protect them from difficulties during a transaction and make the process as easy as possible for them. Latham’s Outdoors is a family owned business run by Cody and his wife Jennie Latham. Cody has over 13 years of experience in the Outdoor Power Industry. Starting out at 19 working on John Deere equipment at M-G Implement in Weimar, TX, Cody has made a career of expanding his outdoor power equipment knowledge and providing excellent customer service. Cody and Jennie opened their business in April 2020. In December of 2020, the business was lost due to a fire. Despite the fire and the challenging first year of running a business during a pandemic, the Lathams decided to trust the Lord and rebuild the business. Finding a new location, replacing inventory and tools and working out the logistics took some time. Latham’s Outdoors was able to start serving the community again in February 2021. Cody and Jennie live in Madisonville and enjoy spending time with their children. The Ultimate Apple Cinnamon Grilled Cheese Sandwich Ingredients 2 purchased cinnamon buns 4 slices aged Cheddar cheese (divided)
Ingredients
4 slices Brie cheese (divided)
1 (16 oz) pkg penne pasta
4 slices deli ham, shredded (divided)
¼ cup unsalted butter
1 small apple - peeled, cored, and sliced (divided)
1 (8 oz) pkg sliced fresh mushrooms
2 Tbs butter
1 small red onion, diced ½ med green bell pepper, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp salt, or to taste 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper, or to taste 1 tsp Italian seasoning, or more to taste crushed red chili pepper to taste (optional) 3 cups fresh spinach, or to taste, stems removed 1 med Roma tomato, diced 1 (15 oz) carton ricotta cheese 1 pinch garlic powder, or to taste 1 pinch onion powder, or to taste ¼ cup Parmesan cheese 1 large lemon, zested and juiced ¼ cup cubed fresh mozzarella
2 eggs ¼ cup milk
Directions Step 1: Slice each bun in half, and place the slices on a work surface. To assemble a sandwich, place the toppings in this order: bottom of cinnamon bun, 1 slice Cheddar cheese, 1 slice of Brie cheese, apple slices, shredded ham, 1 slice of Brie cheese, 1 slice of Cheddar cheese, top of cinnamon bun. Repeat for 2nd sandwich, and gently press each sandwich together. Step 2: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Whisk eggs and milk together in a bowl. Step 3: Dip both sides of each sandwich quickly into the egg mixture, and pan-fry the sandwiches until golden brown on each side, about 2 minutes per side.
Directions Step 1: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add penne and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 11 minutes. Step 2: Meanwhile, melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, and garlic; saute until softened, 5 to 10 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, and crushed red chili pepper. Add spinach and tomato towards the end of the saute process and cook until spinach has wilted. Step 3: Season ricotta cheese with more Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir seasoned ricotta cheese into the vegetable mixture with Parmesan cheese, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Gourmet Mushroom Risotto Ingredients 6 cups chicken broth, divided 3 Tbs olive oil, divided 1 lb portobello mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 lb white mushrooms, thinly sliced 2 shallots, diced 1 ½ cups Arborio rice ½ cup dry white wine sea salt to taste
Step 2: Warm 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in the mushrooms, and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Remove mushrooms and their liquid and set aside. Step 3: Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to skillet, and stir in the shallots. Cook 1 minute. Add rice, stirring to coat with oil, about 2 minutes. When the rice has taken on a pale, golden color, pour in wine, stirring constantly until the wine is fully absorbed. Add 1/2 cup broth to the rice, and stir until the broth is absorbed. Continue adding broth 1/2 cup at a time, stirring continuously, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is al dente, about 15 to 20 minutes. Step 4: Remove from heat, and stir in mushrooms with their liquid, butter, chives, and parmesan. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
I want my teeth whiter... “I want my teeth whiter!” This is one of the most common things that dentists hear. Everyone wants to have movie star white teeth. Is teeth whitening for everyone? Are there any drawbacks? Let’s go over a few things. There are a couple ways to get your teeth whitened. First, there are strips that you can buy at the store and use at home. This way works but generally won’t allow you to get many shades whiter and will take the longest. Second, custom trays could be made by your dentist and a stronger concentration of whitening material can be given. This is usually our preferred method and will allow you to drop quite a few shades lighter. Lastly, you can do in-office whitening which is the fastest and most expensive way but you have to sit for about two hours with your mouth open while the solution works. Generally, we only offer this if you are a glutton for punishment and need to lighten as soon as possible! Now that we have discussed the different ways to whiten. Let’s go over a couple of common drawbacks. When you whiten your teeth, it can make your teeth more sensitive. Some people it affects much more than others. Commonly, we will say to use a toothpaste that helps with sensitivity. If any of the solution gets onto your gums, it

can irritate the tissue. This usually isn’t much of a problem with the strips bought at the store. If you decide on custom trays or the inhouse whitening, it can potentially be an issue. What if you already have some fillings or crowns? Whitening solution will not change the color of previous dental work done. What if I am wanting to get some crowns or fillings on my front teeth? Can I just get the work done and then whiten after? No! You will need to make sure to whiten before and get to the shade that you want and then proceed to get the dental work done. Directions Step 1: Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven’s broiler. Grease a broiler pan with 1/2 tablespoon olive oil. Step2: Rinse chicken breasts and pat dry. Brush with remaining olive oil until coated. Sprinkle each piece evenly on both sides with paprika, lemon-pepper, and salt. Place on the prepared broiler pan, sprinkle garlic over top, and sprinkle onions around the base of the chicken, with several smaller pieces on top.

Easy No-Bake Strawberry Ice Cream Cake Ingredients 1 (10 inch) prepared angel food cake 2 pints strawberry ice cream 1 (8 oz) container thawed frozen whipped topping 6 large fresh strawberries, sliced 1 sprig fresh mint, leaves picked
Directions Step 1: Using a long, serrated knife or bread knife, slice angel food cake into 3 equal horizontal layers. Place the bottom layer onto a freezer-proof plate.
Step2: Remove packaging from the ice cream and slice about 1-inch thick. Working quickly, place ice cream slices on the bottom cake layer, filling the gaps with ice cream and leaving the center unfilled. Lightly press the ice cream pieces together to form a solid layer the same size as the cake layer. Repeat with the second cake layer and remaining ice cream. Top with the final layer of cake and freeze until the ice cream is firm again, about 1 hour. Step 3: Frost the entire cake with whipped topping. Garnish w with fresh strawberry slices and mint. The first Montessori school was opened in Rome on January 6, 1907 by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, educator, innovator acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way a child learns naturally. The Montessori teacher creates opportunities for growth for each vital window of development. It is old, yet new again, and better than ever! Tomorrow’s Promise, THE Montessori School of Huntsville was founded by Kaye Boehning in 1997. Through their non-profit status, they also give back to our community by making the Dolly Parton Imagination Library available to our area. Caring about children and the entire county is just what they do. Boehning shared her story.
Background My vision, my mission, my goal 23 years ago was for all children to have the opportunity to learn in the way designed to teach children naturally where they can excel at their own pace. We expect mastery before they advance. In traditional education, you have to achieve a minimum of a 70 to move on. With our students, you have to score at least a 90 or above before advancing. Otherwise, how do you build on something that you don’t know? I had a degree in fine arts with an emphasis in advertising and was working in a bank doing their advertising. I was tired of that kind of work and pursued my CPA. When I was 21 hours away from sitting for my CPA exam, I started having fun teaching my 18-month-old son, so I switched my major to education and I got my master’s in education. As I was working on my degree, I enrolled my son in a Montessori school at my roommate’s suggestion. I ended up working there and fell in love with the way they taught children. I was determined to become a Montessori teacher. My biggest challenge is I am really a very shy person. I’ve never seen myself as a leader. I need to have more leadership skills and am honored to have been selected for the Emerging Leaders program through the SBA. A good leader surrounds themself with the best of the best--my teachers, my team--everybody that works at the school has a significant role in its success. Charlotte Baker is my right hand. She has been with me 21 years, almost the whole time. She is invaluable to our school.

Each day, each new child, each teacher …there’s always a challenge – some way to grow, some way to improve, some way to do something better. I am always striving to be better, to make the school better, or to help someone be better, give a parent advice, to help a child. I have kept my faith through it all. When asked what Kaye has learned about herself during her time at Tomorrow’s Promise, her husband Rick chimed in and said “She is one tough cookie, with the emphasis on ‘TOUGH’!” One time my dad said to me, “I don’t know how you do what you do. I could never do it.” I’ve always looked up to my dad and I could never understand what he meant. The thing I have learned is I am more resilient and creative than I thought possible. I babysat my cousin when I was younger. I told my dad I was “never, ever, ever, ever having children.” I have a biological child for every “ever” I said! I think, just for fun, God threw in the school after that! We have students from Madisonville, Trinity, Riverside, Livingston, Coldspring, and some SHSU professors that come from The Woodlands and bring their

children to Tomorrow’s Promise. What’s the old saying? We make plans, and God laughs. Tomorrow’s Promise: The Timeline When God laid on my heart the need to open a school, I knew I had to listen. At the time, I didn’t have the money, didn’t have the training, and didn’t have a building. My father sold his company and I had some stock in it and all of a sudden, I had the money. I got accepted into the Houston Montessori Center in Houston, and my journey began. I had no building, no supplies, and nothing other than I knew what I wanted to do. In a matter of

a few weeks, I ordered supplies, found an old frat house near downtown Huntsville and signed the lease, began renovations, obtained my license and inspections, and met all the remodeling requirements. We proudly opened on Sept. 2nd, 1997. To do all of that in such a short period of time was nothing short of a miracle. The school kept growing. In 2000, I had to either turn students away or find a place. I’d been looking for over a year for a place to buy. We prayed about it on Sunday at church. On Tuesday, I drove by the current location of the school and saw a for sale sign in the yard.
We bought the property in February 2000, remodeled, and were ready several months later. We opened the doors and within a few weeks, we were at capacity. That started us looking for a place to expand. We found the house next door. We signed on August 15th and got busy getting it ready. Three years from first opening the business, our second building was ready. The children actually moved the classroom material, one lesson at a time, to the new building. They obtained ownership and were so proud of themselves. It was so cool. In 2005, neighbors came to me and we bought the third building that is now our after-school building.

We are extremely excited about opening our new elementary school this fall for the coming school year. These students need to be able to work at their own pace. We are concerned many children may not have stayed on track through the remote learning due to Covid. Because we are a private school, we stayed open during the pandemic. We offer small environments, and many parents feel safer with their kids in a smaller setting. Our elementary school opening will meet the needs of these families. We also work with the parents to take their financial situation into consideration when assigning fees for the elementary students. We do our best to accept students on their parents’ ability to pay and not let finances prevent them from having a private school opportunity.

to grow. My mindset is to do what God wants me to do. My original mission was to bring Montessori to Huntsville and make it where everybody who wanted to be there can afford to be there. There was no limit on how many kids, how many buildings, or how many teachers. I’ve just been along for the ride ever since.
On Montessori… The traditional system of education we have was designed in the beginning to turn out good factory workers for the cities. Montessori is the only system developed by a doctor using a scientific method, using what was in the best interest of the child. This entire journey began with me wanting to do what was best for children. I didn’t want to see that light bulb of desire for learning in them go out. There is a falsity out there that you can’t be Christian and be Montessori. In fact, Montessori believed God gave her this way of teaching. He inspired her and led her in developing the methods. We are reintroducing Christianity to Montessori. I am a member of Christian Montessori Fellowship and am excited to be in the process of getting Tomorrow’s Promise approved to be a MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher
Education) school with Christian Montessori Fellowship as a training center to train Christian Montessori teachers. The founders of Google, Wikipedia, and Amazon, as well as Prince Harry, Prince William…Julia Childs, Dakota Fleming… all received their education at a Montessori school. It’s important to me that children have the desire to learn, are excited to learn, and have learned as much as they can learn when they leave this program. Our numbers continue

Along the Road Madeley Building, Conroe, Texas In February 1911, fire destroyed 65 wooden buildings in downtown Conroe. It wasn’t long before construction began on several masonry buildings. One of those, then known as the Madeley Bros. Building, was owned by the wellknown Madeley family. A June 26, 1913 article in the Conroe Courier called members of the family “sturdy citizens” and noted that “Madeley interests in this county include many tracts of fertile land and many thousand head of fine cattle and hogs, besides an immense lot of city property in Conroe.” Albert and Daniel Madeley, whose meat market was destroyed in the fire, reopened their business just seven months later. Madeley Meat Market, which sold meat produced from the family’s own livestock, was located on the ground floor of one of three new brick buildings on Simonton Street. Among the noteworthy features of the building was screening installed to keep flies out of the market. A grocery store was located next door.
The second floor of the Madeley Bros. Building had a long history as the headquarters of the local telephone company. Albert and Daniel Madeley’s younger brother, George “Bell” Madeley, manager of the Conroe Communications Company, moved the business to the second floor of the building in 1912. In 1913, the Conroe Courier called it a “splendid telephone system,” noting it maintained many lines from Conroe into outlying farms and residences, and even maintained connections with other telephone companies, allowing local residents to utilize longdistance service. The grandiose article further boasted that “Mr. G. B. Madeley is the efficient manager for the company, and the capable and satisfactory service given by it is due to his experienced and intelligent supervision of every detail of its extensive and important activities. This company possesses all the modern facilities and equipment for prompt and efficient service . . . and is an enterprise for which the people of Conroe and Montgomery County are justly proud.” This “modern equipment” included a switchboard that extended across an entire wall of one room on the second floor of the Madeley Bros. Building. Four operators worked upstairs in the Madeley Bros. Building. Three of them connected local calls, while one handled calls to Houston. When a customer originated a call, a light appeared on the switchboard. An operator connected one cord to that outlet and asked, “Number, please,” and then connected another cord to the outlet that corresponded to the number the customer wished to call. Sometimes customers who wanted to place calls to Houston had to wait their turn. Underground cables by the nearby railroad track ran between Houston and Conroe, finally coming through the top of the building to the switchboard, but there were only two lines.

The Conroe Communications Company and its successors occupied the upstairs of the building for 42 years. The downstairs of the Madeley Bros. Building, which housed a variety of businesses over the years, eventually became vacant, too, and the entire structure fell into disrepair. Pigeons roosted in the alleyway behind the building. Ultimately, the City of Conroe rescued the building, purchasing it as part of a downtown revitalization effort. The city had a new tenant in mind: the Conroe Art League (CAL), which had been in existence since 1963 without a permanent home. After the completion of extensive renovations, CAL hosted the grand opening of the Gallery at the Madeley Building on November 17, 2011, 100 years after the building was constructed. On April 26, 2012, Mayor Webb K. Melder and the Conroe City Council proclaimed a centennial celebration of the “beautifully restored building,” noting its rich history and contribution to downtown Conroe. Likewise, the Senate of the State of Texas recognized the building’s “prominent role in the history of downtown Conroe” and issued Senate Proclamation No. 443, extending its “best wishes for a memorable celebration on the 100th anniversary of the Madeley Building.” The Commissioners Court of Montgomery County issued a similar proclamation. All three governing bodies recognized the CAL, which showcases local artists’ work in its Gallery at the Madeley Building. The CAL’s 300 members are delighted to have a permanent home in the historic building at 127

Try Linking Your Thinking to What Will Guarantee You Foresee a Greater Reality In order to be successful in any significant endeavor when a good deal of effort is required, one must think carefully and correctly about the situation before taking action. The thinking should be more carefully done depending on the importance of the outcome. Your health and the wellbeing of your body are of primary importance. Every rational person wants continuing utmost bodily functioning for one’s entire lifespan, but how to maintain that splendid goal’s essence relies on correct thinking about health. In the material world, everything that produces energy or uses energy (or both) wears out. And there are rules about those phenomena that determine the rapidity of the wearing out. Think of your automobile and how much its continued normal functioning depends on your providing adequate maintance and correct driving habits. Your body is the same. Aging is necessarily the greatest cause of functional impairment to health. Aside from infections and sudden injuries, the wearing out of our bodies is so slow as to be imperceptible, but the damage is cumulative day after day. Our cells ever so gradually change. If you have any doubts, take a look at a photo of yourself from long ago. I just did from 50 years ago when I was in the Navy. OMG! Just imagine, if cigarette smoking resulted in lung cancer within a month or even a year, cigarettes would have been blacklisted before becoming popular. Smoking would definitely not have continued for 7,000 years. NO! We are programed from cave dweller times to stuff ourselves because food was scarce, and to eat as much high caloric foods as we could was survival. Now food is constantly available, but our brain continues to say stuff yourself. Likewise, our tastes tell us to selectively consume fats and sugary foods because they are high in calories; hence cave dwellers who liked fats would have survived better. This preference to eat more than needed and prefer fatty foods has led to over 70 percent of Americans being OVERWEIGHT! Being overweight causes one’s body to produce chemicals that speed up the aging process very gradually and ushers in the diseases of aging--including cancer, heart disease, stroke, and others that disable or cause demise. Tailor your diet to not consume potentially harmful foods; instead, develop a taste for foods containing substances that neutralize the harmful ones produced by your body’s cells. Learn to enjoy fruits (especially the berries) and green leafy veggies. My bride and I have gradually reduced the size of our meals. We almost never finish a restaurant meal. We split it or get a takeout box to go. It sure is nice to cut your eating out expense or enjoy another delicious takeout meal at home! The WHO defines health as ‘Physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease and infirmity’. I want as much of that as I can make happen. AMEN!

Working for the Lord Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. We all know that sound. When we first get the news of a promotion or that assignment we want, it’s the sound of our heart beating with excitement. Yet, in the middle of a tedious project that is seeming to last forever, draining away all of our energy, it is the sound of the clock ticking. Ever. So. Slowly. As my dad used to say, work isn’t always fun--that’s why they call it work. And yet, work is something we all do, whether it’s the work of raising a family, the work of making a living, or both. Every day, as we go about our business, people are watching. How dedicated are we? Do we have a positive attitude or do we grumble and complain? Do we finish what we start, or do we leave the job half-done? Is our work done right, or is it filled with errors? Do we treat customers and colleagues with kindness and integrity? The Bible says we should work at everything we do as if we were working for the Lord himself. One reason is that when we serve the
Lord, we can expect to receive an inheritance from Him as a reward. Another motivator is that in doing our work well, we emulate Jesus in glorifying our Father in heaven. As our character at work reveals Christ to those around us, we become the lights in the world that God intended us to be. Are you working today as if for the Lord? Are you letting your light shine in your workplace? Pray that God will show you how to be an effective witness right where you are. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” – Colossians 3:23-24 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31 “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” – 1 Peter 4:11a
