HEALTH
Caring for the Permian Basin for More Than 50 Years
F
or more than five decades, Odessa Regional Medical Center has been part of the story of the Permian Basin. Since opening its doors in 1975, ORMC has cared for generations of West Texas families, growing alongside one of the nation’s most resilient and hardworking communities. Whether welcoming a new baby, helping a patient recover after surgery, responding to a medical emergency or providing specialized care close to home, ORMC has remained focused on one mission: caring for people with compassion, quality, and respect. Today, Odessa Regional Medical Center is a full-service acute care hospital with more than 200 licensed beds, offering comprehensive healthcare services for patients throughout West Texas and southeastern New Mexico. As the healthcare needs of the region continue to evolve, ORMC continues to expand services, recruit talented physicians and healthcare professionals, and invest in programs that help keep care close to home. ORMC’s care spans nearly every stage of life – from women’s services and care for newborns, including premature infants, to emergency medicine and heart care. The hospital is home to a Certified Primary Stroke Center, and comprehensive cardiac services including cardiac catheterization. The hospital also providers surgery, diagnostic imaging, and rehabilitation services. Families throughout the Permian Basin have trusted ORMC for maternity care for more than 50 years. The hospital is designated as a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and offers the only dedicated Obstetrics Emergency Department in the market, staffed 24/7 with board certified OB/ Gyns. Through its Regional Perinatal Center, specialists collaborate with community physicians to care for mothers experiencing high-risk pregnancies, helping families receive specialized care without leaving the region.
Innovation continues to shape the future of healthcare at ORMC. The facility has a robust Davinci Robotic-assisted surgery program for general and gynecologic surgical procedures, allowing patients to recover quicker and get back to their lives. The facility also offers Mako- Robotic assisted options for precision hip and knee replacement surgeries. These innovative services allow patients to receive modern treatment options close to home while remaining connected to their families and support systems.
Awards and Accreditations
Just as important as the services offered is the commitment behind them. Every member of the ORMC team shares a common purpose: providing compassionate care while helping improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve. That commitment extends beyond the hospital walls through community education, outreach programs and community partnerships that strengthen the Permian Basin.

ECONOMY
Oil and gas industry fuels Permian Basin’s economy
F
or For nearly a century the oil & gas industry has been the lifeblood of the West Texas economy. And Odessa has played a major role. But it has always been a doubleedged sword. Odessa and the rest of the Permian Basin have, for decades, ridden the economic rollercoaster of oil & gas prices. The boom and bust cycles fueled by the energy industry has bred a special kind of person who lives and works here in Odessa and the surrounding area. People around here tend to be very close-knit and are always willing to help others – in good times and bad. And Odessa has also worked hard to diversify its economy. It has worked to develop not only its educational institutions and health care facilities but also to work to attract newer burgeoning industries, such as the development of data center-related businesses.
But it all started with oil & gas. The Permian Basin has a long history with oil -- drilling for the “black gold” began in the 1920s. Production started to increase with the use of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, according to ArescoTX.com’s article, The History of Permian Basin Oil. Odessa, a small ranching and farming town, discovered oil in 1926, and by 1930 was an established oil center. The article reported that in 1940, the world-wide event, “Little International Oil Show,” premiered in Odessa, which was considered a boomtown by then. During World War II, there was a pause, but by 1950, oilmen revived the project. It continued to grow, and the name was changed to The Permian Basin International Oil Show. Last year, the biennial event featured more than 750 oil and gas related companies exhibiting
in 1,100 spaces. It is one of the largest Petroleum Expositions in the world today. Renee Earls, IOM, President/CEO of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, said energy impacts every business in the community. Odessa is home to all types of business including manufacturing, distribution, hospitality, retail, financial, healthcare, education and others. “We have a saying in Odessa: ‘We are ALL in the oil business in Odessa,’” Earls said. “We welcome diversification of all types, and we’ve seen some of that over the years. All of those businesses also rely on the main economic driver for our area, and that is mainly oil and gas, with wind and solar also part of the energy mix. “The future is bright for the Permian Basin and our Odessa Chamber is proud to lead the way.” Earls said.
The Permian Basin’s history with the oil industry dates back about a century, when drilling began in the 1920’s.
