Hailey Kinsel Wins Back To Back San Antonio Titles For the first time in over two decades, a barrel racer has won consecutive titles at the San Antonio Rodeo, and she just happens to live a couple of hours away from the arena. Hailey Kinsel from Cotulla, Texas, qualified for the San Antonio Rodeo for the first time in 2018 and earned the championship. She went on to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) where she again left in the top spot. The newly crowned world champion barrel racer made her second appearance at the 70th annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and again won a title. Riding her great mare DM Sissy Hayday that she calls “Sister,” she stopped the clock in 14.02 seconds on Saturday night, just two-one hundredths of a second faster than Shali Lord of Lamar, Colorado. Kinsel added $15,000 to her previous earnings and left the Alamo City with $29,500. She earned the championship at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo two weeks ago and is becoming the one to beat everywhere she goes. Coming into San Antonio’s rodeo, Kinsel was fourth in the world standings, but with her earnings here, she will get a big boost. Another contestant that got the same boost is Orin Larsen from Inglis, Manitoba. Larsen also earned a championship here in 2016. He competed at the NFR last December and injured his knee. San Antonio’s rodeo was his first one back. In the first-ever draft for the finals, Larsen got to choose the horse he would ride. He picked Frontier Rodeo’s Full Baggage and had an outstanding effort that led to a 92.5-point ride. Larsen’s total earnings were $29,500. Four-time world champion J.W. Harris was the first bull rider to pick in the draft. There was no hesitation about the bull that he wanted to get on in the finals. Harris picked the notorious Sweet Pro’s Bruiser from Powder River Rodeo. The bull has been at the top of his
game and was chosen the best bull of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2017. It was the right pick for Harris. He scored 92.5 points, won $15,000 and had total earnings of $25,250. Reigning world champion saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell picked a horse that he was familiar with, had been over 90 points on previously and couldn’t wait to get on again. It panned out just the way he had hoped. Sundell got on Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine woman and when the judges added up their scores, he had a 92 by his name. That effort got the Boxholm, Iowa, native $15,000 and total earnings of $26,500. Team ropers Tate Kirchenschlager of Yuma, Colo., and Ross Ashford, of Lott, Texas, had the biggest win of their career in the AT&T Center. They stopped the clock in 4.7 seconds Saturday night. The $15,000 that they earned their brought the total money up to $25,750 each. Shane Hanchey from Sulphur, Louisiana, can take the San Antonio off of his bucket list now. The tie-down roper has won nearly every rodeo in North America, has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo nine times and left with the gold buckle awarded to the world’s best in 2018. Hanchey had a 7.2-second run and earned $23,500. Tyler Waguespack has won two world titles and had some success here in the past, but never earned the title. He changed that this year with a 3.5 second run. The Gonzales, Louisiana resident earned $22,750. Along with their earnings, each of the champions got a new San Antonio Rodeo trophy buckle and a $5,000 gas card. This year’s rodeo and Xtreme Bulls competition paid over $1.6 million to contestants. Plans are already being made for next year’s events which are expected to again attract the top rodeo athletes in the country.

Big Al’s View Of The World
I consider myself a fair weather cowboy, yet I’ve been to ropings and rodeos when the weather was not very fair. To say it was colder than a well diggers hind end was not enough. I remember one time we went to a college rodeo in Hillsboro back in college. It was a beautiful spring day when we left Huntsville. No need for a jacket or even a long sleeve shirt. We ended up going to Wal-Mart to buy a hoodie. That was all they had. They had already put out the summer stuff. We froze our rears off that day. I’ve also been to ropings in the middle of a rice field in Beaumont in the middle of August. That is not very fair weather I can promise you. I write this down now because it is the night before the first day of spring. The weather has been beautiful outside the past few days and I’ve been cooped up in the office doing this issue. Not much fun inside. Tomorrow is a new day as they say. It is supposed to be beautiful the rest of the week and I can promise

you I’m headed outside first thing tomorrow morning. Pastor Randy Weaver’s article this month is about TIME. Treasuring, investing, management and enjoyment of TIME. I say I’m a fair weather cowboy because if it’s beautiful outside I love being in the practice pen or at the ranch. We took off the other day and spent the weekend at the ranch in West Texas. I’ve written about the stars before. They are insane. A few days in the fresh air and dust will help you reset your brain and thoughts. It seems I’ve got the treasuring and enjoyment parts down pretty good. I need to work on the investing and management parts. To say I’m a procrastinator is giving me too much credit for being on time. I don’t miss deadlines but I do miss sleep trying to meet those deadlines. While at the ranch one day we went and dug around the Indian camp we have on the place. We found some pieces and parts of tips and lots of scrap. My son said he wanted to know what

they did all day. I said, “tried to stay alive.” To say they managed their time wisely would be an understatement. They spent every last second of daylight and some of the dark just trying to stay alive. If they didn’t eat they didn’t live. It took lots of time to hunt and gather. There were no HEB’s or Whataburgers around. Now that the rodeo season is really kicking off in full swing don’t forget that a little down time is good for a person. All work and no play is not good for you. I can promise you they will have the rodeo without you every now and then. Take a weekend off and head to the river. Not the Frio. That’s my special place! Go to the lake and water ski. That’ll take your mind off everything for sure. Just trying to stay up is a full time job. Investing in time is the tricky part. We can all try to treasure, manage and enjoy time but the investing part is the hard part. What we do with our time is an integral part of the other three. I’ve heard that Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and other professional types favorite word is NO. If it is not going to be beneficial to them they just say NO. You have to learn to say it. It’s not easy. You’ve got people coming at you from every angle with questions, needs and wants. A NO to them is a YES to your family or your health. Learning to say NO, Big Al’

A.R.I.S.E.
Lisa Lageschaar From Winnsboro Rodeo Jr Queen to Miss Rodeo America said. “I realized that being a rodeo queen was Lageschaar “I became hooked on when I entered my first something greater than myself. I could be rodeo barrel race at the age of 11. That an advocate for the one thing I was most led to junior rodeo, open rodeos, bigger barrel races, and more passionate about which was horses and horses. As a teenager, there was a time when I didn’t have a the western lifestyle,” barrel horse to run, so I picked up team roping. I only rope for - Lisa Lageschaar fun. I may enter a jackpot now By Krista Lucas Being a rodeo queen is not just about waving to the crowd and looking pretty. Today’s rodeo queen must know how to properly communicate, have exemplary horsemanship skills and promote the sport of rodeo. These ladies are instrumental in a successful rodeo and getting the sport out in front of the public eye. That is exactly what A.R.I.S.E. does for young rodeo queens. A.R.I.S.E. stands for A
Rodeo Queen Insight to Success and Empowerment and was created by former Miss United Professional Rodeo Association, Lisa Lageschaar. The Texas cowgirl grew up around an agricultural lifestyle and acquired a love of rodeo at an early age. “All I wanted to do as a little girl was look at, be around or ride horses. I got my first pony at the age of five and my first horse at the age of seven. I did everything I possibly could with those horses on the property of my parents’ dairy farm,”
Cowboy Sports News Page 14 - April 2019
and then.” Lageschaar’s first queen contest was at none other than a UPRA summer rodeo in Winnsboro, Texas. “I initially got involved in rodeo queen contests because I was handed a flier for the 2006 Winnsboro Rodeo Queen Contest in my high school cafeteria right before summer break of my freshman year, and I thought, ‘This sounds fun,’” she said. “I came home and begged my parents to let me compete in the contest, and thankfully, they agreed.”
Lageschaar worked extremely hard leading up to the rodeo but came up short. Disappointment is what motivated her to work even harder on her public speaking and horsemanship skills, and she convinced her parents to let her run again. A year later, she won the Winnsboro Rodeo Junior Queen title with a clean sweep. That is when she learned what it takes to be a rodeo queen. “I realized that being a rodeo queen was something greater than myself. I could be an advocate for the one thing I was most passionate about which was horses and the western lifestyle,” Lageschaar said. “My purpose developed and grew deeper over time, but that is the root of the reason I wanted to be an ambassador for rodeo. There is nothing else I would rather be doing.” That eventually led to being crowned Miss UPRA 2012, Miss Rodeo Texas 2016 and Miss Rodeo America 2017. Her favorite part of being a rodeo queen is meeting new people and seeing new places. “As Miss UPRA, I was living on my own as a college student at Tarleton State University, and I traveled alone a lot. There was always someone watching after me, giving me a place to stay, and I made great friends,” she said. “These friends, and my family, supported me and cheered for me through Miss Rodeo Texas and Miss Rodeo America, and it was so special to know they had been with me nearly every step of the way. Many of the friends I made as Miss UPRA will be bridesmaids in my wedding coming up. They’ve been with me through thick and thin, inside and outside of the rodeo arena.” The title of Miss UPRA prepared Lageschaar for bigger stages in the future. Lageschaar ran for Miss UPRA once before and did not win, but she came back and ran again three years later, winning it in 2012. She said one of her biggest takeaways from her time as Miss UPRA was Linda Chase’s belief in her. Chase is the UPRA Queen Director, and it was Chase’s belief that pushed Lageschaar to compete for Miss Rodeo Texas and America and inspired her to start A.R.I.S.E.
COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM
said. “I don’t do this alone. I have had so many ladies volunteer to help and even have helped the participants get ready for their competition.” Current Miss UPRA, Colleen Crumpton, will join Lageschaar and Chase during the clinic. The 2019 Miss UPRA has had an amazing experience so far and said that being able to represent the third largest rodeo association is a dream come true. “At the clinic we go over everything that the girl will experience during a pageant,” Crumpton said. “Lisa will cover speech, modeling, interview, and
we will both go over horsemanship. The girls will also have a chance to get their pictures done by HK Photography, the official photographer for Miss UPRA.” The goal is for everyone to learn the technicalities that are involved in being a rodeo queen, as well as for everyone to leave completely confident in themselves and their abilities. For future rodeo queens, now is the time to participate in the UPRA Queens Clinic to become the best ambassador for the western way of life.
Miss UPRA 2019, Colleen Crumpton (left) will join former Miss UPRA and Miss Rodeo America Lisa Lageschaar and Miss UPRA Queen Coordinator Linda Chase for the 2019 UPRA Queenz Clinic in New Boston, Texas on April 13th.
“With the encouragement of my fiancé, Anthony Lucia, I started A.R.I.S.E. because I felt like there wasn’t ever a comprehensive program to help me prepare for rodeo queen contests when I was competing,” she said. “A.R.I.S.E. is a personal and pageant coaching platform through which I offer private lessons where I teach all aspects of a rodeo queen contest, valuable life skills, and offer a subscription package with a monthly newsletter and membership to my private A.R.I.S.E. Facebook group where I post bimonthly live videos covering a topic related to rodeo queening in detail each month.” Lageschaar works with girls on developing interpersonal, intrapersonal, speaking, interview, horsemanship, study, appearance, and modeling skills. Lageschaar and her mentor will be hosting the annual UPRA Queens Clinic Saturday, April 13 th at the New Boston Rodeo Arena. Chase has been the UPRA queen director for 13 years and loves to find a diamond in the rough. “Our clinic has been an annual event since 2010,” Chase

“Stewardship. It’s about time” From Pastor Randy Weaver Ephesians 5:14-17: Therefore, He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” People live by the clock, because time is important to all of us. Many frustrated people seem to always fight the clock, habitually, as a way of life. As I study Jesus’ life I am amazed that He never seemed to be in a hurry. Although He was doing the most important job in history (redeeming the world), and although He knew He only had a few years to do it, He never ran. He made time to consider the flowers and the birds of the air. He had time to put his hands on the little children and bless them. Time was His friend. The Bible gives us some great insight into how time can become your friend rather than your enemy. Basically, God exists in a realm that is not bound by time or space. He is the Creator of time, and He is greater than time. So, the first step in making time your friend is to totally immerse your life in God. Let’s use the four letters in the word TIME to help us learn it’s importance. T – Treasure I – Invest M – Manage E – Enjoy God says we should treasure time as a valuable commodity. Time is more valuable than money, but it’s like money in that it can be spent and invested. It’s different from money though, because while money can be saved, time can’t. It you don’t use it, you lose it. Forever. At a graduation commencement at his alma mater, Wheaton College, Billy Graham said: “Time is the capital that God has given us to invest. People are the stocks in which we are to invest our time. Where you invest your time reveals what is most important to you.” There is no substitute for investing a large quantity of time with your family. If they are important, you’ll indicate it by the amount of discretionary time you give them. God is the creator of time, and He alone controls it.
Every moment is a gift from God that must be managed wisely. The Bible uses another word. Instead of managing your time, it speaks of “redeeming” the time, which is an even better idea. If you don’t manage your time, someone else will manage it for you. If you don’t control your schedule, someone will always be happy to do it for you. Some people complain they just don’t have enough time to spend with their family. You’ve got exactly the same
Cowboy Sports News Page 48 - April 19
amount of time as everyone else; you just aren’t managing your time wisely or managing yourself wisely. The most important time you will invest will be in your family. The time you spend with your family should be enjoyable. It should be the best time of your life. There will always be something else to do. There will always be somewhere else you can be, but if you are going to make spending time with your family a priority you are going to have to learn the power of that little two letter word, “NO.” You need to learn to say, “NO” to some of the things that take you away from your family. Our kids are only going to be with us for a few years, so we must make the most of it.
You don’t have very long to live! So, let’s make some happy memories of TIME…Time to Treasure, Time to Invest, Time to Manage, Time to Enjoy! Spur of the Moment Photography History is Made as RFD-TV’s The American Finals presented by DISH Concludes $2.35 million purse divided between 10 athletes at AT&T Stadium Arlington, Texas - March 3, 2019 - It’s a cold night in Arlington, Texas but The American’s newly crowned champions brought the heat inside AT&T Stadium. RFD-TV’s 2019 The American Rodeo Finals
concluded this evening after the event’s sixth year. “Putting up two million dollars in two days is very exciting for The American, and I want to thank our new champions for being great champions and showing future athletes how it’s done.” said Randy Bernard.

History was made inside AT&T Stadium in more ways than one. In the bareback riding, Orin Larsen not only got his first $100,000 win at The American, but he did so while setting the new arena record with a 91-point ride. He finished first ahead of four-time world champion Kaycee Feild who earned 88 points in the shootout round. Tilden Hooper and Steven Dent finished third and fourth with 87.75 points and 87 points respectively. “The best part of The American every year is the athletes.” said Bernard. “To see how wholesome, appreciative and humble they are is special, and we need more athletes like them.” When RFD-TV created The Junior American and added breakaway roping to The American in 2019, they didn’t intend on having the same champion for both. Madison Outhier finished in the top two of The Junior American, earning her a spot at AT&T Stadium where she won the shootout round, earning her $110,000 for the weekend. The high school sophomore rode her home bred and trained horse to success with a time of 2.29 seconds, and expressed her gratitude for being able to compete in breakaway on a large stage. Finishing second and taking home $25,000 is the only other roper who received a time in the breakaway, Taylor Munsell. Jackie Crawford and Kelsie Chace also competed in the shootout round. Coleman Proctor celebrated with a smile and fist pump after
he finished his run with partner Ryan Motes in the short go of the team roping. The team finished second behind Luke Brown and Paul Eaves, but their time of 4.24 in the shootout round made them the first champions to take their share of the million dollar payout. Although they are no strangers to success, each having qualified four times to the National Finals Rodeo, they qualified through the Semi-Finals and dominated over the invited teams. Brothers Brady and Riley Minor took second place in the shootout round with a time of 4.75. Ty Erickson repeated his 2016 win at The American this year. His momentum from winning the short go of in 4.33 seconds carried him into the shootout round, where he ran down his steer and $100,000 with an even faster time of 4.20 seconds. The American’s 2014 champion Hunter Cure finished second in both rounds and took home $25,000 with 4.30 second run. Stephen Culling, the only steer wrestler from the Semi-Finals, finished third with 4.61 and Scott Guenthner came in fourth. As Ryder Wright said while waiting for the final results of the saddle bronc shootout round, no matter the outcome, the win was coming back to Utah. The 2017 PRCA world champion was referring to whether he or his father Cody Wright, the last rider of the shootout round, would take the win. Ryder won the short go with a score of 90.25 and came back to ride to a score of 88.5 in the shootout round, securing his win and $100,000. Second and third place

both went to Semi-Finals qualifiers Jake Watson and Mitch Pollock. Fourth went to the exemption rider, Cody Wright, who rode his first bronc in 14 months in the long go. Ryle Smith won the short go of the tie down roping with an aggregate time of 15.65 but fell short to Caleb Smidt in the shootout round. The 2018 PRCA world champion flanked and tied his calf in 6.97 seconds to win $100,000 and his first American championship. Although Rhen Richard fell short in the shootout round of the team roping just shortly before, he earned second place and $25,000 with a time of 7.35 in the tie down. With a 7.47 second run, Ty Harris took third place and Ryle Smith finished fourth. When Hailey Kinsel rocked the third barrel, every fan’s heart dropped. When it reset without falling, all of AT&T Stadium erupted. The 2018 world champion Hailey Kinsel continues to be unstoppable. She and her partner SISTER won The American for a second time, finishing the shootout round with a time of 14.217. In 2016 she split the million and this year she won $100,000. Coming in second was Kylie Weast with a time of 14.462. Craig Brooks, the only Semi-Finals qualifier and male rider, won the short go and ran to third place in the shootout round in 15.361 seconds. Amberleigh Moore finished fourth. The third and final champion eligible for the million dollar payout came from the last event of the night, bull riding. Joao Ricardo Vieira qualified through the Semi-Finals and earned a score of 87 points. Qualifying in the bareback were Orin Larsen, Tilden Hooper, Kaycee Feild and Steven Dent. In breakaway roping was Kelcie Chace, Jackie Crawford, Madison Outhier and Taylor Munsell. In the Team Roping qualifiers included Luke Brown and Paul Eaves, Coleman Proctor and Ryan Motes, Aaron Tsinigine and Trey Yates, and Riley Minor and Brady Minor. Steer Wrestling qualifiers were Ty Erickson, Hunter Cure, Scott Guenthner and Stephen Culling. Qualifying in the Saddle Bronc was Ryder Wright, Jake Watson, Mitch Pollock and Cody Wright. Tie down roping qualifiers included Ryle Smith, Caleb Smidt, Rhen Richard and Ty Harris. Qualifying in Barrel racing were Craig Brooks, Hailey Kinsel, Kylie Weast and Amberleigh Moore. In the bull riding, three athletes qualified for the shootout round and these were Cody Teel, Joao Ricardo Vieria and Kaique Pacheco.

Rodeo Houston Makes Impact On World Standings Courtesy of the PRCA Two-tenths of a second made all the difference in steer wrestler Josh Garner nailing his biggest win 10 years after joining the PRCA when he won RodeoHouston with a 4.6-second run during the Super Series Championship, March 16. “RodeoHouston is a prestigious rodeo, and it feels great to win,” Garner said, adding that he couldn’t compare it to anything he’d experienced before. Many cowboys try to win the coveted Houston buckle, but Garner knocked it out his first time entering RodeoHouston. “I always wanted to go, and I’d watch the videos of RodeoHouston,” Garner said. “I was super stoked just to be entered, and then winning the deal is just incredible.” Unlike most rodeos, RodeoHouston’s competition spanned nearly a month from Feb. 25 through March 16. During that
COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM
time, Garner won $57,000. He won the second round of Super Series 3 with a 4.4-second run and placed second in the third round in 4.5 seconds. T h e C a l i f or n i a cow boy went on to place second in the Semifinals 1 segment with a 4.7-second run. “A lot of people thought I was relaxed or calm, but I wasn’t at all,” Garner said. “I didn’t know I didn’t show any emotion, I was pretty jacked up.” The 28-year-old cowboy credited his RodeoHouston win to riding Buzz, a horse owned by Sterling Lambert and Clayton Anderson, and having Jacob Shofner as his hazer. “When it all comes together, it makes it easier for me,” Garner said. “I drew good steers too, but it all goes back to the horsepower.” Garner’s best season since joining the PRCA in 2009 was in 2018 when he finished 25th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $52,344. He’s surpassed that
total with a single win. “I’m still having a hard time believing I won $57,000,” Garner said. “I could always use it, and it’s darn sure going to help me get down the road and work on trucks and trailers.” Garner’s 2018 season was highlighted by tying for the win with his travel partner Billy Bugenig at the RAM California Circuit Finals Rodeo in October 2017. He went on to split the win at Rodeo Austin (Texas) with Cole Edge in March 2018 and the Sisters (Ore.) Rodeo in June. Buzz was Garner’s ride during Rodeo Austin and the Sisters Rodeo, so he knew this 13-year-old American Quarter Horse would bring good luck during St. Patrick’s Day weekend at RodeoHouston. “I’ve had a good history with the horse,” Garner said. “He scores good and he hauls butt, and especially for a short guy like me he gets my feet on the ground fast. Seems like I always do good on him.” Before winning RodeoHouston, Garner was 38th in the 2019 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $9,096. With the $57,000 from RodeoHouston, he’ll likely find himself in the top five for the first
time in his career this late in the season. “I was that high in the standings after winning the (California) Circuit Finals, but that’s when the season first starts,” Garner laughed. “It’s a big jump in the world standings, and I’m not going to back off, I will keep going,” Garner said. “It’s a great opportunity to make the NFR, which is my ultimate goal.” Garner’s travel partners are also his competition and his friends, so he took Lambert, Bugenig, Shofner, Cameron Morman and J.D. Struxness out for steaks to celebrate the win before heading to Rodeo Austin. Other winners at the $1,748,000 rodeo were bareback rider Kaycee Field (92 points on Korkow Rodeo’s Onion Ring); team ropers Ty Blasingame/Kyle Lockett (5.0 seconds); saddle bronc rider Jesse Wright (86 points on Flying U Rodeo’s Flood Tide); tie-down roper Michael Otero (8.5 seconds); barrel racer Nellie Williams-Miller (14.26 seconds) and bull rider Trevor Kastner (90 points on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Smoke House).

With letting half of the $100,000 count towards the PRCA standings and ultimately the NFR, it put Ryan Motes and Coleman Proctor in a great position this year. I couldn’t be more happy for them and what this means for our sport. Coleman is a close friend that we consider part of our family and I wanted to talk about how far he’s come. Not long after I started my training website, speedroping. com, I noticed his name as a paid subscriber. Even then he was a #9 header and #10 heeler. He was one of the first heelers of that caliber to buy a subscription and I was impressed at his commitment to get better. I invited him to come rope with us the next time he was in Texas. We quickly formed a friendship even though I ragged him a lot. When he first showed
up, his ability with a rope was outstanding, but his horsemanship needed some work. One of his key issues was facing. He would be excited and focus on looking at the flagger rather than facing correctly. We’d rope, and then watch the video and break it down and talk about what needed to be worked on. In 2013 I had decided I wanted to rodeo and planned to go for 45 days or so. Coleman had always picked on me to give him a chance to heel for me. He heeled for Jake Long when they were young and switched ends so he was very talented on either end. He would send me videos of his heeling and call every few days asking if he could come “try out” as my heeler. When the time came I called him and told him I was getting ready to pick a partner and asked if he wanted to try out. He said he didn’t think he really had a chance. At the time he was day working for about $150 per day. I told him, “I’ll make it fair. You’ve bugged me forever. If

you come to the house and try out and it doesn’t work out, I’ll give you a check for $1,000 to pay for your trip so you don’t feel like you’ve wasted your time.” He showed up with two horses, his good head horse, Booger and another. Needless to say he rode well but his horses were lacking on the heel side. I let him ride two heel horses that Jennifer rode, LC and Randy. I was completely blown away with how well he roped going fast. But, when I said we were high team and had to be 11 seconds to win, he struggled at staying back and pushing through heeling. But going fast and riding the corner, I was completely impressed with Coleman’s heeling. When I asked why he wanted to heel, he said, “I wanted to be around you and learn what you do at the rodeos. I want to get better with my heading and prove to you I can heel.” He did an outstanding job of heeling for me. I broke a lot of barriers at the rodeos. He heeled great at the rodeos but struggled heeling in the jackpots. After the USTRC Finals we split and he went back to heading. We have stayed very good friends and he’s almost like my adopted son. He still wears my
speedroping.com patch and sends me videos. We break them down and talk about what he’s doing. At the American semi-finals, all he had to do was have a qualified time to make it to the next round. He missed the barrier and if you’ve seen the video, it was wild and they were 20-something on the steer. We discussed in great detail why you would miss the barrier in a short arena when all you had to do was get a time and the barrier would not affect you. For Coleman to back in the box at the American rodeo for a chance to win $600,000 a man – that was an amazing feat. I’m very proud of him, he’s come from earning $150 for day work to having a half a million dollars in the bank. He’s still trying to convince me he can heel and was trying to get me to head at the qualifier but I told him after breaking my ribs last summer I didn’t feel sharp in my roping. My hat is off to he and Ryan Motes for this accomplishment and making history. I suspect this will make a lot more people try to qualify for the American next year since it can help them qualify for the NFR. Coleman has come a long
