Breaking It Down With Speed Williams The All Star Team Roping Finals Last year my wife and kids went to the All Star Finals at the Lazy E and had a great time. I was unable to go as I had lessons scheduled. My wife said it was one of the more enjoyable ropings they had been to. The Lazy E has been around a long time and remains a state of the art and one of the nicest facilities available, along with a friendly atmosphere. I was told by my family the All Star finals would be put on my calendar for this year. Tim Victory, the producer, called and asked if Rich and I would be interested in matching Jake and Clay. Though I haven’t been competing for the last few years due to injuries, I told him I was up for whatever the rest of them wanted to do. In the six head match Rich ended up getting a front foot in his loop on the second steer. You can’t afford to give Jake and Clay any advantage. They won the six head match. Beforehand I suggested we have two one-head matches with the fastest time a winner. That way one team got to go first and fourth and the other team got to go second
and third. We did salvage winning the fastest time. They were 5.4 and we came back on the last one and were 5.2. Most people don’t realize how much respect Rich and I have for Jake and Clay. One of the things they used to do was practice on fresh mulies. I continue that practice to this day. They were one of the first teams I studied that was versatile enough where both the header or heeler could do whatever was necessary to win in various situations. Often, we’ll see a team where one end is solid and seldom makes mistakes, and their partner is a gambler and takes quick and risky shots. Both Jake and Clay could play both parts. Historically if you see a team of gamblers, they’ve rarely been successful for any length of time. One partner on the team has to catch and not make mistakes. We had a booth set up at the All Star Finals for the Speed Trainer. I don’t remember a time when it was used more at an event. It was next to the goat pen and there were kids on it all day long. They had matches and roped to their heart’s content. It was quite entertaining. Last year my kids didn’t
have a lot of success at the All Star Finals. In the last roping, the #9, Gabe almost broke even on entry fees. Hali has really struggled with her #6 heading card and I’ve tried to convince her to heel more. The ropings were structured much like the old USTRC Finals. The preliminaries would have 200 to 500 teams with $200 entry fees. Then in the Shoot-Outs you had a chance to win $35,000 for $500 to $600 fees. Gabe has been catching a lot but not winning much. He roped very well at the All Star Finals and he won a little over $26,000. He rode Rat and Shotgun there. I did have one complaint by the time it was over. I was visiting with Tim on Sunday night before the Open. I told him the days were pretty long and we didn’t get to eat decent dinners nor get enough sleep. I also had clients up there roping and was running back and forth between arenas. He assured me that next year they’re going to add three days to the event to help cut down on the long days. The atmosphere and ropings were like I remember the USTRC Finals in the old days. It was a lot of fun and very enjoyable. Big preliminaries and good Shoot Outs. If you’ve never been, you might put it on your calendar for next year. There are not many opportunities
for the kids to have a chance to win big money. Lots of ropings now days have age restrictions of 21. I’m very thankful for this event. They have lots of roping and some World Series qualifiers. The weather was exceptionally nice for August in Oklahoma. We have the Extreme Finals this weekend and then the USTRC Finals coming up which will be in Ft. Worth this year. With the location and date changes I hope the USTRC Finals has a good turnout. My kids will be roping there this year. What’s new with me: Teaching is something I love and enjoying doing. We start out roping steers and then during video playback we break it down to see where the weaknesses are. Afterwards we get on the Speed Trainer and work on those things. Then we rope the Hot Heels to work on you and your horse. Then it’s back roping steers. I had a couple of young men here for a few days that had been roping quite a while. Both were very handy with a rope but did not use their left hand or feet at all. The transformation they made in just three days was phenomenal. I wish all my clients could progress that fast. The video does not lie and can be brutal sometimes. I look forward to seeing where my clients and my kids can take their roping in the future.

R&M Rodeo Photos What a summer. Heck, what a year! What started out as a chance to have the best of years quickly changed to trying to salvage anything you could from a year that I don’t think anyone ever figured they would see in their lifetime. What rodeos that have been held have been pretty good. They should be. There is nothing to go to so when someone actually has one, everyone enters it. Now the question that has been on everyone’s mind all summer is starting to come into play, “What About The Finals?” Not just the NFR but what about the association finals that held all across the country during the fall. The CPRA holds their finals each year in Angleton, Texas during the Brazoria County Fair. The fair association decided to cancel their
fair this year, just as almost every other fair has done in Texas. They have all decided to go with a livestock show to fulfill their obligation to the youth of the area but can not afford the liability of having spectators in the stands for a rodeo or concert. We all knew it was coming. You knew it back in March when they cancelled just about everything in sight. You were pretty sure of it later this summer and now here it is. Thankfully a few locations are stepping up to take the slack for these cancellations. Many places that do not have a fair have shown interest in having these events in their location. I’m sure as things come together in the next few weeks you’ll see many announcements about changes of venue and changes of location for many
events.
What about the NFR? Who knows. As this paper is going to press the question is still floating around out there. Many have said they’ll never leave Las Vegas. Many say they are headed to OKC or Dallas. I’ve heard Ft Worth thrown into the mix a few times. I’m pretty sure Las Vegas is not going down without a fight. They are hurting just as badly as everyone else and they need the NFR in some capacity to come to them in December to try and salvage a horrific year. Stay tuned because I’m sure things will be changing daily on just about everything in the next few months. I quit thinking, Big Al’

ProRodeo Hall of Famer Walt Arnold passes away World champion steer roper Walt Arnold, a member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, passed away Aug. 14 in Silverton, Texas. He was 81. A rancher all his life and a talented horse trainer, Arnold didn’t compete full time in rodeo until he was 25 years old, yet he qualified for the National Finals Steer Roping 19 times (1965-67, 1969-72, 1974-82, 1984-86), tied for fifth most. Arnold won the world championship in 1969 and finished as reserve champion three times (1971, 1978-79), missing out on the 1971 title by $538 to Olin Young. “Ever since I was a small child, I had a desire to be a rodeo cowboy,” Arnold told ProRodeo Sports News in 1980. A model of longevity, Arnold won NFSR average titles in 1965 and 1978. His roping prowess extended to other events, as he twice qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in team roping (1966 with Bob Ragsdale and 1968 with Tim Prather) and won the 1972 Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days all-around title for his exploits in tie-down roping and steer roping. Arnold’s toughness and talent persevered over adversity, as much of his success came after he broke his ankle and wrist in separate accidents during the 1970 season. Arnold was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up Hall of Fame in 2005. Arnold’s childhood was spent around horses, and he could usually be found with a rope in his hand. His experience from an early age helped him become a top-notch horseman, an ability that aided his career in the arena. “We grew up on horses, and I broke horses for the public,” said Arnold in an interview with PSN. “Horses have always been a part of my life. It’s a big advantage to know how to keep a horse working, and a lot of guys who don’t have a background like that don’t know how to keep horses working.” He patterned his roping after fellow ProRodeo Hall of Famers Sonny Davis, Clark McEntire, Everett Shaw and Shoat Webster. Arnold took what he could from observing the Hall of Fame quartet rope and turned it into his own that led him to a spot alongside his idols. Arnold said he was bless-

ed with great horses throughout his career, from Tater’s Booger, whom he won the 1965 NFSR average on, to Bill, the horse that carried him to the NFSR average crown in 1978. He won the 1969 world title on King Bailey and used horses named Chub, Nicotene and Sherm. In 1974, Arnold was a charter member of the cowboy
chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, traveling the country giving his testimony and helping cowboys improve their lives through faith. He also represented steer ropers on the PRCA Board from 1974-77 and was a model example for his peers throughout his career. Arnold was born Sept. 1, 1938, to Arthur Cyrus Arnold Jr. and Gladys Burson Arnold on his family’s ranch outside of Silverton. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John A. Arnold, Fred Arnold; sister
Marian Hamilton; and his son, Dee Arnold., Arnold is survived by his daughter, Jeanette (Ronnie) Lee; his son, Bob (Viann) Arnold; his daughter, Mindy (Mark) Marrs; daughter-in-law Pat Arnold; and the mother of his children, Gail Arnold. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. and professional rodeo. His résumé includes qualifying for the national high school finals, the college national finals for two different colleges and more recently, winning the all-around at the pro rodeo in Grand Island, NE. He has also been successful in the United Professional Rodeo Association, winning the all-around multiple times, and he is currently in the hunt for another title in 2020. “I’ve been very blessed to have a little bit of success in rodeo,” Muggli said. “I’m probably the most proud of being able to be competitive in the all around in the different associations and rodeos.” Muggli comes by the rodeo gene honestly. His family has always been involved in the rodeo and ranching world, which includes his uncle, the late Lane Frost. “From the time I was a kid I always wanted to ride horses and rodeo. That’s what my family had always done,” Muggli said. “My parents, uncle, grandparents, and the ones that came before them were all cowboys. I’m very thankful for all the people I’ve been able to meet because of that.” Muggli’s mom, Robin, is a sister to Frost and stays busy with a western store called Frost Ranch Wear. Both Robin and husband, Mark, have always been fully supportive of everything their two sons wanted to do in life. They instilled a

multiple events and at a high level at that. To succeed at more than one event takes extra dedication, practice and determination, but that has not stopped Oklahoma cowboy

Wyatt Muggli. Muggli competes in calf roping and team roping and is a true cowboy by trade. He has risen through the ranks of high school, college, amateur,
cowboy mentality in them from an early age. “My earliest memories of riding horses was gathering cattle with my dad,” Muggli

said. “I rode an old ranch horse named Grey. I remember getting mad at him because he wouldn’t go any faster, but my legs were so short I’d just kick the saddle pads.” He has continued that way of life where he currently lives on the family ranch in Lane, OK. If he is not practicing in the roping pen or off at a rodeo, he can be found working on the ranch or riding colts. “We start about seven every morning feeding horses,” Muggli said. “I will help dad get started taking care of the cattle, then I will start riding my horses. It depends on how much help dad needs that day, but I try to work at both events every day that I’m home.” Having a strong support system at home is important in the rodeo world, and his parents, grandparents and girlfriend, Lindsey McLeod, always make sure he has everything he needs to keep winning. He has had many other

positive influences in his life throughout the years as well. “I’ve been very lucky and had many people help me
along the way,” Muggli said. “Clay Hurst, Nick Rowland, Trey Whiteman, and Marty Becker to name just a few. Although hands down the biggest influence in rodeo, or my life in general, has been my dad. I’ve never been around someone that works so hard at everything he does. I hope I can be half the man he is.” Muggli has used that inspiration to fuel his fire in the rodeo arena. His favorite part of either event though has to be getting to work with horses. “I really like having two chances at each rodeo. Normally, if one event is cold, the other is going good,” Muggli said. “I’m very proud of the horses I get to ride and constantly worry about what I need to do to make them work the best. Sometimes it gets to the point I have to tell myself to not worry about the horse and just rope.” Those horses include a black calf horse named Ears and two sorrel head horses named Kidd and 42. Along with good horses underneath him and family and friends behind him, Muggli’s faith also keeps him going. It is very important to him
to be the best person he can be and be a good example to anyone he crosses paths with. “We get to drive all over the place meeting all kinds of people. I just ask for protection and to be able to make just a small difference in someone’s day,” Muggli said. “I’m very thankful and very blessed to be able to lead the life that I lead. With the Lord’s help, we will be able to face anything that comes our way.” With an attitude like that, Muggli has a bright future ahead of him, and he does not plan on slowing down anytime soon. His plans include hitting up as many circuit and amateur rodeos as possible. “I’m going to try to get into all the year end finals,” Muggli said. “If a person can do it, you will have a great opportunity in the fall to win some good money and get ahead for a little while.” He would also like to thank his sponsors, Rattler Ropes and Equibrand. The world could use more cowboys like Muggli right now. With a lot of hard work, faith and a little bit of luck he will always be an all-around cowboy.

CPRA RODEOS ENTRY INFORMATION: For all CPRA 1st approved rodeos enter at 800-54-RODEO (800-547-6336). Entry dates and hours are posted on each rodeo listing. Contestants will have a 1st preference backed with a 2nd preference on a 1st come, 1st served basis. When entering have your card number or last four digits of your social security and be prepared to write your confirmation number. No call backs. After books have closed the draw will be posted at www.rodeosportsnetwork.com. Trades will be accepted in the CPRA office after books close. All parties involved in trades must contact office. Notified turn-outs are not accepted. VET/DOCTOR RELEASES: Contestants are entitled to a total of two (2) releases per year. Contestants may use two of either Vet or Doctor release or one of each. Releases must be in the CPRA office within seven (7) business days following the last performance. The release must state the contestant’s name and the rodeo from which you are releasing.

The CPRA and Brazoria County Fair & Rodeo regret to announce cancellation of the 2020 CPRA Finals in Angleton, Texas The safety and well-being of all of the exhibitors, members, staff, Contestants and supporters are extremely important to the Brazoria County Fair Association and CPRA Finals Rodeo. Since 2006, we have worked together to create fun, family-oriented events, while at the same time providing a safe environment. This year, out of an abundance of caution regarding COVID-19 concerns, the BCFA Officer Team & Staff have been in close communication with local County Officials and have determined that a traditional fair will not be a viable option this year. We will definitely miss Angleton this year and seeing everyone, but public safety will always come first.

CPRA FINALS 2020 OCTOBER 9TH & 10TH GIDDINGS, TEXAS BOOKS OPEN SEPTEMBER 23RD & 24TH SEE CPRARODEO.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION Revised 2020 CPRA Finals Rules, Guidelines and Qualifications CONTESTANT QUALIFICATION RULES 1.In order to qualify for the Finals, contestants competing in the Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding or Steer Wrestling must have a current CPRA card and have entered and competed in at least 1 or more CPRA first approved rodeos. These rodeos will count only beginning the date membership is purchased. 2.In order to qualify for the Finals, contestants competing in the Barrel Racing, Breakaway Roping, Calf Roping or Team Roping must have a current CPRA card and have entered and competed in at least 3 or more CPRA first approved rodeos. These rodeos will count only beginning the date membership is purchased. 3.The CPRA will take the top 15 money earners in each event, including the heading and heeling to the finals; as long as they have the minimum rodeo count. 4.The top 20 in each event must call in for the finals. Top 15 paid contestants that meet final qualifications will be accepted. These rodeos will count only beginning the date membership is purchased. CONTESTANT ENTRY & RODEO RULES 1.All entry fees must be sent to the CPRA office on or before the deadline listed. Fees must be paid with a cashier check, money order, or credit card (with $5 service charge), no personal checks will be accepted. 2.It is the member’s responsibility to check all his/her points to make certain the points are correct. Contestant must notify the CPRA office prior to the Finals of any points in question. 3.A contestant qualifying for the Finals must compete in all go-rounds, unless of an injury or emergency. If a contestant is entered in a rodeo elsewhere and turns out a go-round, he/she will not be allowed to compete in remaining go-rounds. A finals contestant drawing out less than two (2) days prior to finals will be fined $750 and forfeit fees paid. Any turnout during the finals will result in a $500 fine. A notified turn-out more than (two) days prior to finals will be refunded fees with no fine, provided a replacement is available. A contestant that has turned out in any go-round will not be eligible for average points. 4.There will be no alternate date or time given to any contestant to compete. Contestants must compete when called upon. 5.All Finals contestants will be given a check-in time for the Finals. You must be checked in by deadline or contestants will receive a $100 fine. 6.A Mandatory Contestant meeting will be held directly after check-in. All contestants must attend. 7.All contestants are responsible for reading ground and complying with all Finals rules. 8.To receive a Finals award, you must be present at the Awards Presentations. A contestant not present will forfeit their awards to next eligible person. Any exceptions must be approved by the Board of Directors. 9.The association will offer awards for Champion Header and Champion Heeler. Contestants qualifying for the Finals will be the top 15 headers and top 15 heelers. No pick-up partners, top 15 headers will rope with top 15 heelers. Any team that enters the Finals will compete with the person entered as partners. A contestant qualifying in both heading and heeling must designate which side he/she will compete in. Contestant cannot compete in both. If one of a said team fails to show up, the other team member has the option of roping with the next qualified person in said event, or choosing a partner from another contestant already entered in the Finals in another event. 10.Contestants shall ride in grand entry if requested to do so. Long sleeve shirts, jeans, hats and boots must be worn in the arena at all times. 11.Positions at the Finals will be determined as follows: 1.1st go-round will start with the 15th place contestant through the 1st place contestant. 2.2nd go-round will start with the 1st place contestant through the 15th place contestant (reverse order of 1st Go). EXCEPTION - Barrel Racing:(Two go-rounds) 1st Go: 1st place to 15th place 2nd Go: Random Draw 12.Finals tie-breakers will be determined as follows: 1.1st Go Round will be determined by the contestant coming into the Finals in the highest qualifying position. Consecutive Go Rounds will be determined by the fastest in average. 2.Average will be determined by the fastest time in a Go Round. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION RULES 1.All Finals Personnel that are eligible to work the finals rodeo will be placed on a ballot for voting by the top 20 contestants in each event. 2.The CPRA board will approve all finals personnel. The board reserves the right to deny and replace any position they feel the voted party is not able to properly perform their duty at the finals. 3.All Finals personnel must have worked a minimum of two (2) CPRA 1st sanctioned rodeos to be eligible to work Finals. 4.Timekeepers for the Finals will be selected as follows: Official and backup timer must have timed two (2) 1st sanctioned CPRA rodeos in the current rodeo season. Top 20 contestants will vote for timers. The Board of Directors will select the official, backup and alternate from the top 3 votes. 5.Secretary for the Finals will be selected as follows: Finals Secretary must have worked two (2) 1st sanctioned CPRA rodeos in the current rodeo season. The Board of Directors will select and hire the Finals Secretary from the qualified list. An award will be given for Secretary of the Year voted on by the top 20 contestants. 6.Pick-Up Men for the Finals will be selected as follows: There will be two pickup men. Pick Up men must have worked two (2) 1st sanctioned CPRA rodeos in the current rodeo season. The top 20 contestants in bareback and saddle bronc events will vote, the 2 pick-up men with top votes will work finals. 7.Judges for the Finals will be selected as follows: There will be three Finals Judges. Judges must have worked two (2) 1st sanctioned CPRA rodeos in the current rodeo season. The top 20 contestants in bareback, Bull Riding and saddle bronc events will vote, the 3 Judges with top votes will work finals. STOCK CONTRACTOR AND FINALS STOCK QUALIFICATION RULES. 1.Stock for the finals shall be selected in a manner that will facilitate quality, even stock for all contestants to compete on at the finals. i.Stock for the finals shall be selected by utilizing voting ballots from the top 20 contestants in each respective event. The 33 animals with the most votes shall be selected to perform at the finals. Event directors shall be responsible for any tie breakers, and will have the responsibility to add or eliminate any stock in an attempt to create even pens. ii.In order for stock to qualify for the finals, stock must have had at least 1 out at 1 CPRA 1st sanctioned rodeo during current rodeo season 2.Stock must be on grounds one (1) day prior to first performance of the Finals. Stock in contention for stock of the year must be bucked during the last performance of the Finals, if able. 3.Directors will be provided one motel room during Finals provided he/she obtains a minimum of $600 in sponsorships. 4.The Board of Directors reserves the right to make changes as may become necessary.

“Your House & How It Is Built” From Pastor Randy Weaver
This is a story of two people…each person builds a house. Each house looks secure in good weather. The thing about a good house, you never know whether it will endure the storm until the storm comes. Each house experiences a storm. This is not a story about the weather, it’s a story about building a house that can withstand the storm. Big difference! Only the storm can reveal how solid your house is. For both people in this parable, there’s a choice to be made. One man chooses to build on sand, and the other chooses solid rock. What kind of foundation are you building on? Why build on sand? What is sand? Sand is the earth, the things that are accumulated here on the sand or the dirt. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall inherit the earth.” Most people are building on sand, but Jesus calls us to build our lives on Him. Build your life, your marriage, your business and your finances on Him. Don’t merely live for yourself, live for Him. Give yourself to His work and mission in the world. Don’t merely invest your money in the sand of this world, invest in eternity, the eternal kingdom of God. What are the words of Jesus? “I am the way the truth and the life – no one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus said He was going to be killed, but then rise from the dead. And He did! Now, He also says one day He’s coming back, and He will! “I go to prepare a place for you... that where I am there you may be also! Jesus invites us to build our lives on Him – the sure foundation. Who wants to build on sand? God, the righteous judge, declared us guilty of our sins, because we have been born into a fallen world. The law of God demanded that our penalty would be an eternity in Hell. Then Christ stepped from

behind the judge’s bench and paid our penalty on our behalf. In other words, He transferred our sins from our account to His account. Our Lord and Savior Jesus reconciled us to His grace on the cross of Calvary, until all of our sins were paid in full and we became the righteousness of Christ, once and for all. We invest our life to accumulate, only to find that the things we have accumulated, have accumulated us. Our thoughts are so consumed with
the future, that the present rushes by without even being noticed. The law can never take you out of bondage. Under the law, if we don’t notice that the rock was struck once and for all…we continue to strike the rock. We are not recognizing provision for emancipation from our own personal trap. Thus, we build our house on the sand. Seek first the rock then your family will be secure. The law can’t take you out of bondage. It can keep you in the desert. It can never bring you to grace. Eternal structures never crumble. If you live bound to this world you have to live with tomorrow in mind. Jesus said unless we become like a little
child, we can’t see the Kingdom of God. A child’s mentality says our Father will take care of it. We will always be a slave to our own will, as long as our word overrides Gods word. ProRodeo athletes make cameos on Yellowstone Fans of the hit TV show “Yellowstone” who also follow ProRodeo might have noticed several familiar faces during the rodeo scene in the episode that aired Aug. 2. A few days after winning the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up in mid-September last year, bareback rider Tilden Hooper found himself in a different kind of spotlight during the filming of an episode of “Yellowstone” near Park City, Utah.
“For the bucking scenes, they did all of those in one take, but there was a lot of stuff leading up to it that we did 20 takes of,” Hooper said. “But the riding part, they understood the danger there. That is what I noticed, they respected the bucking horses and made it as safe and as good as possible.”
As for a career in show business, Hooper hasn’t ruled it out. “I’d love the opportunity to do something like that,” Hooper said. “It seems like back in the day it was an easy transition to go from competing in rodeos to acting or doing stunt work. It’s definitely something that interested me.” “Yellowstone” airs on Paramount Network. It is also on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock Premium, and on Amazon Prime. It’s also available for purchase on vari-
ous online entertainment stores. “All the feedback has been positive, and in general the rodeo community likes seeing cowboys on a show like that since it’s authentic,” Hooper said. “They get on board with rodeo every chance they get and promoting the sport in every way they can. Those guys are gung-ho with rodeo, and it’s awesome to have a TV show or business like that in our corner rooting for us.”
“It (the set of a TV show) is like a rodeo really,” said Hooper, who helped on the episode. “It takes a lot of different moving parts and people behind the scenes to produce what you see on TV or in the arena, so it’s pretty cool.” Sid Steiner, the 2002 steer wrestling world champion, and his son Rocker are among the cast for Season 3, Episode 7, titled “The Beating.” But in the background and around the action fans are likely to notice some of ProRodeo’s top athletes in bareback riding and saddle bronc riding. “The episode had a shot of Rocker Steiner riding bareback, and Sid, Bob and Joleen (Steiner) were there and involved with the storyline, so we happened to be around town, and Sid asked if we would help buck the horse,” Hooper said. “I ended up flanking the horse and helped Rocker out there. Kaycee Feild was there too helping do pickup, Cort Scheer was on the bucking chutes and made it in some shots, and Jake Finlay was there too. It was a handful of contestants who stopped and helped.” Hooper is a six-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2008-09, 2011, 2014 and 2018-19). Feild is a four-time world champion bareback rider (2011-14) and a 10-time NFR qualifier (2008-15, 2018-19). Scheer is a saddle bronc rider who has competed at the NFR six times (2010, 2012-15, 2018), and Australian saddle bronc rider Finlay is shooting for his first Wrangler NFR, sitting 17th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of Aug. 12.
