Breaking It Down With Speed Williams My teaching philosophy I have been teaching people how to rope since I was a kid. When I was young my dad trained and sold rope horses. We had a lot of customers come to Florida from the north who wanted to learn to rope and buy a horse. So, we needed to teach people who had never ridden or swung a rope how to be able to catch. One of the hardest things to learn is to put weight in the stirrups instead of sitting in the saddle. If you are sitting in the saddle, you can’t be up coming across the line. If you can ride the stirrups and put weight in them, your knees and legs absorb the pounding your horse gives you coming across the line. We do a lot of trotting and swinging a rope at the same time. It’s important to learn to balance, put weight in the stirrups, and swing your rope. So many low numbered headers struggle riding across the line. They tend to pull on the reins when they leave the box to balance themselves. That’s one of the reasons we built the Speed Trainer: To teach people to swing and rope at the correct angles while having their hands and feet in the correct position.

Roping a dummy on the ground creates incorrect muscle memory which makes it hard to transition to roping horseback. One foot is usually forward and your left hand tends to rein out to the left when you pull your slack. With the Speed Trainer we are creating angles that are close to life like, with your legs side by side and the horse’s head in the way. If you’re “balancing” on the reins the Speed Trainer has alarms that will go off and let you know. In all my years of teaching, I’ve found that young kids and mature, successful men both have trouble accepting what I say at face value. It doesn’t matter that I’ve won eight titles or what I’ve accomplished. When I tell them something they don’t just naturally accept it. However, once they see it on video and understand what we’re trying to accomplish, it clicks for them and my job becomes much easier. Most people have trouble accepting they are doing so many things incorrectly. Breaking bad habits is much easier when they can see it for themselves. That’s why in my schools we always start out with first time clients giving them scenarios and seeing how

they execute. For example: they are high team and have to be 11-seconds; then 9-seconds; 7-seconds and then 5-seconds to win. There are different ways to go about each of those runs. Then we find out where the weakness is and what their strong suit is. Whatever is going to eliminate you in the roping is what we need to work on. Is it the steer that runs left, runs right, the slow steer, or the runner? You must prepare for all the obstacles you will face when you show up at the roping. That comes down to preparation and how to practice in order to eliminate your weakness. With today’s technology if you’ve never seen yourself on video, you really need to step back and think about how much time and money you put into this roping without studying what you need to do to get better. If you don’t enjoy losing, you need to put time and effort into preparing so you have a better chance at success. Most of the time when people are struggling, it’s their horsemanship that keeps them from improving. I have been fortunate that both my kids love to rope. It makes what I do for a living so much more enjoyable when my kids are there and I can teach them things about life while we’re working at their roping. People ask all the time if I get tired of teaching. Most clients come to my house in small groups for private lessons. I’m very

fortunate to teach something that I love and am passionate about. One of the things I work on all the time with my kids is understanding what the horse is trying to tell you and to realize when they are sore and not feeling good. What’s new with me: Gabe’s heeling continues to improve. The last couple of weekends he has roped outstanding but not won any money. But, I was prouder of his heeling than the times he’s won money. It’s starting to look more controlled. We’ve been having a lot of heelers for lessons. It’s so much harder to get better at heeling than heading. Without good spins it’s very difficult to break bad habits. That’s made the Speed Trainer handy in teaching heeler body and hand position and dallying. Big Al’s View Of The World

If you read the front cover you’ll notice that I’m saying farewell to 30 years of publishing this magazine. 30 years is a long time to do any one thing and like I wrote a few months back, we weren’t even sure if we were going to make 30 years earlier this year. With so much going on in the world today and so much uncertainty for the future matched along with a desire to spend more time doing other things in life and not living by a magazine deadline we have decided to call it quits. This is not a decision that was done quickly. This was not an easy decision and this was not something that we take lightly or without great regret. Change is inevitable and constant. The new “kids” don’t read magazines. I never wanted to go down with the ship as they say. I wanted to go out with my head up and by doing it now we can say we had a great run and we had fun doing it. My biggest regret will be the friends we have made in 30 years. The list is too long to put into words but some of the ones that come to mind are Mack Bradford and James Phifer. Mack was taking my family’s photos when we were in youth rodeos so when we asked for him to send us photos he never stopped. James Phifer

learned from Mack and David Jennings. James has sent us photos since he started taking them and we have always used them. From his first photos in this magazine to shooting the NFR we take great pride in knowing we helped him with his career. Another long time friend is Mack Altizer with Bad Company Rodeo. Mack believed in us from the beginning and used us back in the day when Bad Company was king. I know we would never be where we are today without him. His support made other people want to be a part of us and changed our business for the good. Mack has made an impression on rodeo that will never fully be known or understood by these newcomers. The rodeo committees and stock contractors that have been with us for years and years is long. From Rafter D Rodeo and the Smokey Davis family to Lester Meier Rodeo Company, Lester and Holly and the late Sammy Catalena. We have loved our friendship with all of them. Teague, Stamford, Woodville and many towns that don’t even have rodeos anymore all come to mind when I think of the ads that came back year after year like clockwork. We have changed lives through the years. I have had many a letter written to me about

what a difference it made to someone when they read the words in Pastor Randy Weaver’s article. Before Randy, it was Ronnie Christian and there were a few others in there along the way. I even got a few letters about how my words had changed a life or two in this article. I’ll miss the letters from readers like Billy Babin in Louisiana. His letters are always a high point of my day when I get one. The list is long of the friends we have made in 30 years. I want to thank my parents for allowing me to take over the reins full time almost 20 years ago. Without my dad having that entrepreneurial spirit to start a rodeo paper out of the blue 30 years ago in an East Texas hayfield, we would never have gotten to this point. We thought about selling the paper and we had multiple people wanting the chance but we ultimately decided to just close the doors to keep the integrity of the product where it was. We have taken great pride in producing this paper all of these years and to see someone else not put that pride into it was not an option. 30 years is a long time. That is 363 issues of late nights, phone calls, emails, late night drives to the printers, phone calls with subscribers and the occasional “you’re doing a good job” letter. Our son is a full blown singing star now and my wife and I want to be able to go with him on the road when we can and not have to miss things because it’s “paper time.” Life is full of change. This is one that will take a while to get used to. Mack Bradford’s slogan for R&M Rodeo Photos is “Memories, Friends & 8x10’s.” I’ve got them all and the photos to prove it and that can never be taken away. I will always cherish the fact that I had a hand in making Texas rodeo better. I’ve enjoyed the ride.

“God’s Family”

From Pastor Randy Weaver One of the most beautiful Psalms of thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm: “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” It is not uncommon to make a wish list at Christmas, or to draw up a list of resolutions for New Years. There is another list we often overlook, a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful for. Like you, I’m sure, my list would include the major things in life. Health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, our church family, and the mercy that God gives to us each day. With Jesus we have so much for which to celebrate on Thanksgiving!

I believe that there is a real danger in this season of determining our thanksgiving on the basis of how much we have, or worse, how much we don’t have. We let these things determine whether we are thankful or not. The Psalmist says that all of these things may change at any time. The only thing we have for sure is our relationship with the Lord. And that is what the 100th Psalm emphasizes. The basis

of our thanksgiving is the Lord. God made us, inside and out. He made you the way He wanted you to be. The question is, are we making ourselves the way God wants us to be? He created us in His image. Therefore, give Him thanks for who you are. “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever. His faithfulness continues through all generations.” “O Lord, help us to be thankful that you do not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10). I pray that this will be a meaningful Thanksgiv-

ing season for you and all your family. Take time to read the 100th Psalm again. And if you’ll heed those commands, your heart will overflow with thanksgiving to the Lord. Our forefathers had “a boundless faith in God.” That almost sounds strange today, in a time when powerful forces are at work in our nation, to strip us of every reminder, that the very foundation of our nation was built upon the conviction that we are still “One Nation, Under God.” Our “Declaration of Independence” proclaims, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” And it ends with these words, “. . .with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.” Thanksgiving Day is a distinctive holiday. It doesn’t commemorate a battle or anyone’s birthday or anniversary. It is simply a day set aside to express our nations thanks to our nation’s God. CPRA RODEOS ENTRY INFORMATION: For all CPRA 1st approved rodeos enter at 800-54-RODEO (800-547-6336). Entry dates and hours are posted on each rodeo listing. Contestants will have a 1st preference backed with a 2nd preference on a 1st come, 1st served basis. When entering have your card number or last four digits of your social security and be prepared to write your confirmation number. No call backs. After books have closed the draw will be posted at www.rodeosportsnetwork.com. Trades will be accepted in the CPRA office after books close. All parties involved in trades must contact office. FINES MUST BE PAID BEFORE ENTERING (Visa, MC & Discover accepted)

CPRA FINALS REQUIREMENTS: You must compete at ten (10) rodeos of which five (5) must be CPRA 1st approved. Jackpots (bull ridings, team ropings, etc.) will not count toward your rodeo count.

TURN OUTS: Members and non-members entering any straight CPRA Rodeo or CPRA 1st approved rodeo will be fined for turn- outs. The fine amount is the entry fee plus $25.00. Notified turn-outs are not accepted.
