Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Learning to head from scratch Recently I’ve started teaching a 14-year-old girl to head, who’s never roped before. She’s competed in barrel and poles and wants to learn to rope. It’s a little easier to teach her to ride and swing her rope since she’s an experienced rider. As a teacher, I don’t stress much about the cosmetics of the swing. For kids and total beginners, it’s important to get them where they can catch, turn steers, and have a chance to win something for it to be fun. If you make it too detail oriented in the beginning and force them to be technically correct, they can become easily frustrated and not enjoy it. Go to a team roping anywhere in the US and watch a #8, #9, or #10 roping and you will see many different types and styles of swings that win money. Basically, you have to get it around your head and on the horns. I’ve seen many styles with a lot of wasted motion but they’ve learned to adapt and make it work for them. When I was a kid, my dad sold a lot of horses and would have clients from New York or Miami
that had never ridden in their life but wanted to get into team roping. He would teach them to catch, stay in the middle of their horse, and turn steers. These are the basic fundamentals and how I taught my own daughter. I taught her to ride across the line, swing her rope and be able to rope when she got to the steer. This is where roping right to left comes into play. Compared to shooting pool, this is basically just making the shot. As you progress, then you learn to put English on your rope. The hardest part of heading is riding across the line, swinging your rope and being ready to rope when you get to your steer. To simplify catching I start beginners roping right to left. The benefit is they are covering a bigger area rather than throwing at a specific target. Roping right to left has a higher catch percentage and is more forgiving. As they progress there’s a time to learn to rope both horns at the same time. When ropers learn to use their left hand correctly their horses work so much better than when they balance on the reins, causing them
to constantly and unnecessarily pull on their horse. This creates so many problems that prevent them from being able to catch. This is where Priefert’s Speed Trainer comes in handy for me as an instructor. I start my students in the box with a green light on. They have tension on the reins. The reins have a pressure valve that shows how much pressure you have on the reins when you swing your rope, pull your slack, and dally. This makes the transition from the Speed Trainer to a horse much more realistic and smoother. In the past I have spent hours on the ground teaching people to rope and do different drills. But you’re just not accountable for what your left hand or legs are doing. You use both to get in position when you want to throw your rope. For many years I have taught people to rope that had never ridden or roped and it could take some time before they were able to catch and turn steers. The Speed Trainer speeds the process up by allowing me to work on little things that matter a lot. Like putting weight in the stirrups, balancing on stirrups, and swinging a rope in a simulated position just like on a horse. There’s no question that roping the dummy on the ground is much easier than roping from a
stationery horse with a neck and lights and alarms that buzz when your hand is in the wrong position. But, I am able to make the transition of moving to the horse much faster. We can dramatically speed up the process because we’re able to work on feet and hand position which are the two most vital parts in improving. What’s new with me: I’m happy to say Texas has opened back up. That Monday, by the end of the first day, I was booked for 21 days of lessons. It’s nice to have our indoor up and not have to worry whether it’s windy, raining, or hot. I thoroughly enjoy teaching something that I love to do. It’s exciting that both of my kids are involved in a world I have knowledge of and that I can help them. It’s not always just about roping. There’s a lot I can teach them about preparation, dealing with different personalities, and life lessons in general. If you’ve never roped on a Speed Trainer. R&M Rodeo Photos The rodeo world got word last week that rodeos were now legal. The governor said you can have a rodeo or equine event, but there was one big catch. You could only have 25% capacity with your spectators. In short that means you can have your event but we are limiting your income to 25% of what it has been in years prior. How are you supposed to pay for a rodeo with 25% attendance. Imagine you spend a few thousand on advertising, another few thousand on a good act. You hired the best announcer and stock contractor and they weren’t cheap. Nothing has changed in your event from last year as far as production goes. You still have the same production costs but now you know up front that you are only going to be able to receive 25% of your normal income. 25-50% clear profit is pretty good for a rodeo over operating expenses. Now you are only going to have 25% income. It doesn’t take a degree in economics to know this isn’t going to pay off.
Oh well, you’ve got sponsors that pay for everything. Yes we do, but those sponsors also expect something from their sponsorship. They sponsor our event because they know we have a large crowd that is going to see their sponsorship and support them on their next purchase. This is called visibility. Now this visibility is cut by 75%. They aren’t getting much bang for their buck are they? Not to mention, most of the sponsors that every rodeo gets have more than likely had a 75% reduction in their income the past three months making them not as likely to be able to afford to sponsor your event. There is a lot that goes into a rodeo before they ever even unload the stock on Wednesday and the majority of that stuff costs money and lots of it. I have heard more than one contestant say that they can’t understand why these rodeos are canceling even though the governor says it is ok to have the rodeo. The answer is this: if
they have the rodeo they will lose money. They will lose money that will make them be at a deficit for next year’s rodeo before they even start planning next year’s rodeo. Stop and think about this before you get mad for your favorite rodeo “wimping” out. Keep in mind that these events provide much needed money to the local community and for them not to have the event is going to affect the local community more than your rodeo schedule. We need to all support the rodeos that do have an event. Don’t gripe at the gate when they ask you to pay to get in and make sure you spend money at the concession stand and make sure to buy fuel or eat in town before you leave. These communities depend on this money each year to get by. Appreciate what they are doing for their community and for rodeo in general. 6’ behind the guy in line at the concession stand, Big Al’

Ginny Cichoski Overcomes Obstacles To Live Her Dream
out stronger than ever before, and her no regrets attitude has kept her winning in and out of the rodeo arena. Cichoski is originally from Minnesota and moved to Texas in 2013. She is fairly new to the sport of barrel racing. The self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie fell in love with the event that presents a challenge at a high rate of speed. “I technically made my start learning to run barrels in 2017. When I was younger I just messed around at home from time to time. As I got older I just worked on ranches and got into cutting,” Cichoski said. “I’m a newbie at barrels with lots to learn yet, and I enjoy being a sponge and love constructive criticism.” Even though she has enjoyed riding horses since a young age, some may wonder why she is just now getting into barrel racing. Cichoski has a very unique story that is an inspiration to many. A cancer diagnosis would change everything five years ago. “In 2015, I was diagnosed with stage three Melanoma. The cancer was on my thigh,” Cichoski said. “I have been through numerous surgeries to remove the cancer and lymph nodes. One doctor told me I had three to five years to live.” The news was devastating to hear, and Cichoski was also put on chemo. The chemo made her extremely weak, and she was bed ridden, dropping down to 100 pounds at one point. “I stopped the chemo and slowly got better, going in for scans twice a year for
first rodeo run, literally almost coming off my horse while wrapping the barrel.” Cichoski is now in remission, and once she got the hang of barrel racing, she started experiencing success at rodeos. In 2019, she was well on her way to making the Cowboy’s Professional Rodeo Association finals when tragedy struck in Teague, Texas. “That night I was entered in the slack, riding Fergie. I remember having a real nice fist and second barrel. After turning third and heading home everything from that point on I remember nothing,” Cichoski said. “After watching the video and talking to people that saw it, about half way home Fergie started bucking while running. I had blown a stirrup at some point. As we came through the alleyway, I went face first into the structural pipe. I suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a huge gash just above my eye that was bleeding out bad, my finger was torn up, and it needed to be sewn back together, and I broke my humerus bone clean. There were no medics on the scene. They called for me to be air lifted, but there were no helicopters available for quite some time.” She was eventually taken to Waco’s Intensive Care Unit, where she stayed for about three days. After surgery to put a plate and screws in her arm, she was dealt more bad news. The doctors recommended Cichoski not ride for three months, but that did not stop her from meeting her goal of making the CPRA finals. “About three weeks

resilient than ever, and she has plans to continue her barrel-racing career. “God was looking over me, and I’m able to be here doing what I love to do.” Her plans include her main mount Fergie, a brown Dash For Cash bred mare. “This mare has been quite competitive and is very special to me,” Cichoski said. “Fergie is great on the road, handles any ground, great in the alley, very level headed, maintenance free, I truly could go on and on about her.” The pair has traveled to many rodeos together and are both looking forward to being able to compete at some of their favorites again like Poteet, Madisonville, Uvalde, West, Giddings, and LaGrange. When Cichoski is not running barrels, she enjoys spending time with her nineyear-old daughter, Laina, and working from home starting colts, taking in consignment horses and giving lessons to kids. The Minnesota turned Texas cowgirl enjoys staying busy and

I told myself if I could place in the 1D I would push forward to make my goal of making the finals. Groesbeck was my first jackpot back, and I ended up winning it. The pain was surely there in my arm, and I remember riding one handed for most of the run. That one win I decided wasn’t good enough, therefore I entered one more and told myself if I can win this one we are going back to the CPRA’s. Fergie and I won the next one and from then on, it was crunch time to try and climb back up to try and qualify for the finals.” The pain ended up being worth it. Cichoski and Fergie entered all the rodeos they could to qualify for their first CPRA finals. Tragedy would strike again at the finals, giving Cichoski a whole new set of obstacles to overcome.

“My first night I had a clean run with no issue at all. The second night is where we encountered the same thing we went through at Teague. First barrel and second barrel were fine. I remember running home, and that is all I remember. Fergie went to bucking again on the way home, and I was unable to hang in there.” Cichoski was knocked unconscious with a brain bleed. She was once again airlifted to Herman Memorial, where she stayed for a few days. She had been instructed that one more blow to her head could result in severe brain damage or death. Flash forward to now, and Cichoski is doing well all things considered. Her experiences have made her more

BFI Moves To Lazy E Arena The cluster of team ropings with a collective $1.7 million payout goes, for 2020, back to the birthplace of team roping’s first six-figure paycheck. In just four weeks, Wrangler BFI Week will land temporarily in one of team roping’s most iconic arenas. “The coronavirus has closed a lot of doors and changed a lot of people’s lives forever,” said Dan Wall, general manager of the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma – the nation’s largest indoor venue devoted exclusively to Western events. “Sometimes a door closes on one side and opens on the other. Reno’s unfortunate loss is our gain. It’s one of those things that fits like a glove.” The half-million-dollar Bob Feist Invitational – the world’s richest team roping for pros – and the half-million-dollar Wrangler Patriot 11.5 for amateurs (plus seven additional amateur ropings), were originally scheduled for June 20-25 in Reno, Nevada. When the coinciding Reno Rodeo this June was cancelled, roping organizers decided to relocate June 20-24 to the Lazy E Arena, on a ranch large enough to allow plenty of distancing. The 43rd BFI will be held on Sunday, June 21 instead of its traditional Monday, but will still follow its customary Saturday night welcome banquet. Entries for the BFI are due by June 12, and the prestigious event is limited to the first 125 paid teams. It will once again be live-streamed on WranglerNetwork.com. “This is where team roping really took off,” said BFI Week co-owner Daren Peterson. “Ed Gaylord built this arena for hard-running steers and long scores. The 440-foot arena itself, plus the camping and stalls are great for our ropers, and fans have always loved the vendors and the infamous Cantina overlooking the boxes.” Because of the late-date change in venue, additional entries will be taken on-site for the 9.5 and 10.5 Over 40 ropings, the 11.5 and 12.5 ropings, plus the Hooey Jr. BFI ropings and All-Girl challenge ropings – all of which have limited team counts. The Lazy E’s climate-controlled three acres under a roof were built 36 years ago to host the National Finals Steer Roping. Over the years, the arena also hosted performances by the likes of

George Strait and Reba McEntire. The Lazy E is a working ranch, having stood stallions like Coup de Kas and Mr. San Peppy, with a roster today headlined by Corona Cartel – sire of racehorses that have earned $54 million. Owner Gary McKinney is a team roper, himself. “Mr. McKinney loves everything about the team roping industry, from the grassroots all the way to the elite level,” said Wall. “Ever since he bought the Lazy E in 2013, we’ve talked about how to create a Feist [Bob Feist Invitational] or a Strait [George Strait Team Roping Classic] or something of that nature.” It was the Lazy E’s long arena, popular cantina and television lights that made Denny Gentry choose it for the first-ever National Finals of Team Roping in 1990, because “everyone who swung a rope knew it was the premier roping facility in the U.S.” The event in Guthrie every October for five years helped the sport explode in popularity, as the Lazy E hosted the first team roping that paid winners $100,000 and the first event that paid out a collective million dollars. Today, the Lazy E continues to host the annual “Ironman” of professional rodeo in the bucket-list Timed-Event Championships of the World. It was held this year in March just as Oklahoma City became the epicenter of national pandemic closures when the NBA’s Thunder/Jazz game was called off just before tipoff. “We held one of the last major events before the lockdown and then we held one of the first sporting events back, when we partnered with the PBR to bring the Las Vegas Invitational and other CBS Sports broadcasts here last month,” said Wall. Wall credits the Lazy E’s intense safety protocols and unique property that allows quarantine of everyone on site with plenty of camping and limited access in and out. Plus, he said the governor has trusted Logan County leaders who want to bring business back to life in safe environments. “When the BFI news leaked out, we got so many calls about tickets and calls from vendors that we didn’t even have time to get the event listed on Ticketmaster,” said Wall. World Championship Will Pay Equal Money in Each Discipline WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) and PBR (Professional Bull Riders) announced additional details today regarding the Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WRWC), taking place at South Point Arena in Las Vegas on November 3-7. The world championship event is open to any female athlete competing in breakaway roping, barrel racing, team roping and will award a $750,000 guaranteed payout with equal money in all four disciplines. The event will also award a Women’s Rodeo AllAround Champion. All disciplines will feature two main pathways to the WRWC main event. Athletes who earn the top four spots on the WCRA Leaderboard at the end of the nomination period will be directly seeded into the main event while athletes 5-64 on the leaderboard will compete in a qualifying pool. The 60 athletes in the WCRA pool will compete in a three round progressive format with the top six advancing to the WRWC main event. Nominations for the 2020 Women’s Rodeo World Championship Leaderboard will start on May 18 at Noon CT and will close October 11 at 11:59 p.m. Up to 16 athletes per discipline can earn a NWYI (“nominate, win, and you’re in”) seeding qualification in the WCRA pool through select events. The four fastest times in the NWYI fast track will earn a spot in the main event. All athletes advancing through the WCRA Leaderboard and NWYI events will

not be required to pay an entry fee. Athletes will also have an opportunity to earn a spot in the main event through the “Open to the World Qualifying Pools”, which will be split into
pro and challenger divisions. All athletes in the Open to the World Qualifying Pools will compete in two rounds of competition with 18 athletes per pool advancing to the progressive round. Those who do not advance to the progressive round have the option to re-enter in a redemption round. The top 10 fastest times in the one-run progressive round will advance to the main event. A total of 24 total positions in each discipline will be available in the main event
with multiple combinations of pay-outs available throughout all stages. The Women’s Rodeo World Championship will be carried on RIDE-TV and RidePass, the PBR’s western sport digital network. ROOKIE APPLICANTS
If you are applying for rookie status you must complete and sign the 2019 rookie application in addition to the standard membership application. If you were a CPRA 2018 rookie and did not win $1,500 or more, and did not win a 2018 rookie championship, then you are still eligible for a 2nd year. However, you still must sign the same forms as those first year applicants. If you’ve recently renewed your membership and did not complete the rookie application, you have 30 days from the date of your membership for the form to be received in the CPRA office.
MINOR RELEASES
If you are a minor (under the age of 18) you have 21 days from membership date to have the notarized minors release in the office or your entries will be stopped until the release is received. All minor members are required to have a minor release on file in the office, (one per year). CPRA reserves the right to ask for any additional paperwork/information if the board requests, contestant must provide in a timely manner. “Why Church?”
From Pastor Randy Weaver For many, church has become irrelevant and insignificant. The church is anything but that. The question that needs to be answered is, “Why Church?” Psalm 122:1 says, “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” We are living in a time of change. With schedules filled with activities demanding our time and the ever-expanding array of social media, many feel that church has become irrelevant and insignificant. The comment is often heard, “I can be just as good a Christian without the church.”

Both Christ and Paul set the example by making a habit of faithfully attending corporate worship weekly. Christ expects Christians to assemble together on a regular basis to worship Him and to exhort one another. The Lord wants you as a believer to be involved in a local bible-believing church as the early church was involved. Part of loving God
is loving people. Three benefits of being actively involved in the church. 1) We cultivate worship and praise that is pleasing to God. Praise is the appropriate response to God’s goodness. 2) We help discover, develop and exercise your spiritual gifts. Discovering and exercising your God-given spiritual gifts allows you to experience maximum fulfillment of God’s calling and direction in your Christian life. 3) The conversion of the lost. We have a charge to both proclaim and embody the gospel so that others can see, hear, and feel God’s love in tangible ways.
Remember, the church
is a community of regenerated believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. Plus, the church is not a building, but it is the people of God. Let us all strive be the Church! Why church? To answer that question, we need to have an understanding of what the church is, how Christ sees the church, Christ’s expectation for the church as community, and the benefits of being actively involved in the local church. The word “church” in the New Testament never refers to a building or a place, it always refers to people. The New Testament church is a body of believers who have been called out from the world by God and have been assembled or united together to worship God; to live and serve Him as His body or people under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. God sees the Church as a living organism, not as a building or place. The church is a community of regenerated believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. The true church operates in obedience to scripture, they organize under qualified leadership, gather regularly for preaching and worship, observe the biblical ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s supper, are unified by the Spirit, are disciplined for holiness, and seek to reach out to fulfill the great commandment and the great commission as missionaries to the world for God’s glory and their joy. Christ saw the church as being vital for every believer. He loves the church with a jealous and passionate love. Eph. 5:25, “Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for
