Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Transitioning from team roping to breakaway The explosion of breakaway roping has been phenomenal. This growth is very exciting for the girls and I really don’t see it stopping in the near future. When my daughter, Hali, was young she didn’t really want to breakaway rope, she was a team roper. Once in Junior High rodeo she realized she needed to. Because she learned to rope right to left and the emphasis had been on catching every cow, it was a major transition learning to rope calves. When roping calves, you don’t want to tie your hands together and come across. You actually want slack between your hands and then drop a coil when you throw your rope. It was very different trying to learn to rope calves. However, she has gotten to where she has a fairly high catch percentage and is really starting to like it. Actually, more so than team roping because she hasn’t had much success as a #6 header. In October I hurt my elbow, so I didn’t plan on going to the Patriot or the American qualifier and didn’t have it on my calendar. I booked schools away from home in
Orange, Texas, and Florida for the ten days during those two events. Hali qualified for two breakaway spots in the American qualifier and was not very happy when she realized I had a scheduling conflict. Next year she plans to block off those dates on my calendar beforehand. There were some good breakaway jackpots the week of the American and Hali didn’t do well. My daughter has gone from being a conservative team roper to an “all or nothing” breakaway roper. We had a long talk about trying to force yourself to win first. First you’ve got to catch the calves and when you get to the short round, put yourself in a position to win something. I explained that you can’t just go at them hard from the start. That leads to a lot of failures. So, we had the worst week of breakaway at three different jackpots but came close to winning some fast times. She got it out of her hand fast, roped the nose, ears, and did an outstanding job of throwing her rope when the barrier was pulling. We had a long visit and I told her, “Daddy has done that; try to win first a lot and you need to realize your success rate is not high
when you’re trying to win first.” So, she had the Junior American Qualifier and there was an Open Breakaway at the Patriot. She wasn’t very excited about entering the Open after the week she’d had, but I convinced her to enter. She did a great job of catching her first three calves and came back third high call. She was very aggressive in the short round. She got two swings off and fired when she came across the line and was 1.9 and won the roping. I thought to myself, “Oh my child, they pay more than one place.” But I do understand that mentality. So, I just smiled and said, “Good job” when I talked to her on the phone. She had just had the worst possible week because she had been trying to go too fast. Your odds are not good when you’re maxed out at your ability. We’ve been working hard at getting her swing off and changing the way she starts her swing. We’ve got her where she can throw and now we’re focusing on accuracy. She can get her rope out of her hand when she crosses the score line, but we need a higher catching percentage rate. I have to give her credit because she works very hard at her roping. She diligently does her drills every day on the Speed Trainer. She uses it to work on using her left hand, putting weight in her stirrups and us-
ing her legs more effectively. We set up scenarios where the calves go left or right and she is able to practice the angles for those type of runs. The goal when we leave home is to not have to throw that fast. We want to be able to take one more swing for a higher catch percentage. But I’m blown away by her “do or die” aggressiveness that’s coming out in her breakaway roping. In the past I’ve tried hard to get her to throw fast in the team roping and crossing the line, but she hates to miss. That all changed last year and we will see how much range she can gain with breakaway roping. I’m curious and anxious to see how far breakaway, barrels, and team roping will go now that WCRA has a big finals this November in Vegas with the PBR. Now if the PRCA will step up and add breakaway to the NFR… What’s new with me: We have just finished our covered arena so our private lessons and schools can’t be rained out anymore. We will be doing some bigger groups now that I have more RV plugs and stalls that will accommodate more people. We’re talking about teaching some breakaway clinics as well. I use video in all my schools where we break down your runs and isolate problems. If you’re interested in booking a school, feel free to check my calendar at speedroping.com.

Big Al’s View Of The World
R&M Rodeo Photos Well damn!!! Not really sure how to start this month’s article. I guess we could start with “we really didn’t see this coming!” We had a trip to Nashville planned for a month for our son to record a few songs the first week of March. Before we left there was talk of a few cases of the conoravirus but there were no warnings or anything to make us thing things were bad. We joked at the airport the morning we left about catching the corona and we saw a few people wearing face masks but that was it. The first two days in Nashville were great. He got his songs recorded and we were going to do a day of sight seeing before we left the next day. That morning we started seeing reports of no toilet paper in the towns around us back home. Then
we got word they had cancelled Rodeo Houston and were thinking Austin was going to get cancelled also. Then later that day they cancelled the SEC Tournament in Nashville that was supposed to start that night. That left a bunch of rowdies with nothing to do on the streets of Nashville. We decided it would be a better night spent in the AirBnb we had rented in a quiet neighborhood north of town. Later that night my wife remembered we were out of toilet paper back home and now there was none in the stores so we made a family decision to “borrow” a few rolls from our temporary landlords in Nashville. They had a full case in the cabinet and many loose rolls under the restroom sink. We didn’t figure they would miss a few rolls and after all it
was going to be an emergency back home without any. My son said he wasn’t worried because a month’s supply of Whataburger napkins in his truck so he “was good” he thought. We were not looking forward to coming back home to the craziness. We landed on Thursday in Houston. We left Friday afternoon and went to Leakey to the river to just get away from the craziness around here. We drove home Sunday night and by Monday morning all hell was breaking loose. At first I was like everyone else. I didn’t think closing things were good for the whole. I figured there would be more harm done to the economy than a few thousand people getting sick. By the time I’m writing this article on Thursday night I have changed my mind. I don’t have a problem staying around my place for awhile now. I’ve always been about half hermit anyway. It is going to really stink for a while in the world of rodeo and the world in general. Life will return as we know it just not in the next few weeks. Pray for this to pass quickly and without too much loss in the world.

WOMEN’S RODEO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TO DEBUT IN LAS VEGAS IN NOVEMBER New Opportunity Created for Female Athletes Seeking New World Title The WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) and PBR (Professional Bull Riders) have announced a new, breakthrough event in women’s rodeo: the Women’s Rodeo World Championship, taking place at South Point Equestrian Center on November 3-7. This first-of-its-kind world championship is open to any female athlete in the world competing in breakaway roping, barrel racing and team roping. The new Women’s Rodeo World Championship will award a minimum of $750,000 and name a champion in the individual disciplines of barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping as well as a Women’s Rodeo All-Around Champion. The event will be held in Las Vegas during the PBR World Finals. Qualifying positions will be open to all eligible women across the world. Ten riders will have direct paths to the Championship based on their final ranking on the WCRA leaderboard. The event will begin with onsite open-qualifier rounds November 3 - 5. Those ranked in the top 10 from the open qualifier will advance to the Championship on November 6 - 7, where they’ll compete alongside the Top 10 from the WCRA leaderboard and an additional four competitors awarded exemptions from to-benamed events. “Working with our partners at PBR to provide female rodeo athletes an opportunity like this is a game-changer,” said WCRA CEO, Gary McKinney. “This historic addition of the Women’s Rodeo World Championship to the WCRA 2020 tour will give female ropers and barrel racers more opportunities, including the ability to compete for big-money payouts.” “Women in rodeo haven’t had the same opportunities as men, and they deserve this exciting national platform and world title competition,” said PBR CEO Sean Gleason. “We’re very proud of our partnership with WCRA which helps us celebrate and reward talented female athletes while inspiring the next gener-
ation of young women to pursue rodeo.” The Women’s Rodeo World Championship will be carried on RIDE-TV and RidePass, the PBR’s western sport digital network. Additional details on how to qualify and leaderboard information will be released at a later date.

Catfish Brown is making 2020 his year. By Krista Lucas There may very well be a changing of the guard happening in professional calf roping. New, young talent moving in is something that

he has gone by the nickname, Catfish, since he was a little boy. The nickname came about after a fishing trip with his dad. “When I was six, I caught a 12 pound catfish on a snoopy rod, and my dad told me if I didn’t take a picture with it, he would call me catfish at my next baseball game,” Brown said. “I didn’t hold it, and it all started from there.” Brown has been an athlete all of his life. He grew up being involved in sports and played defensive back and running back on his high school football team. During his senior year, Brown signed with Southeastern Oklahoma State University, in Durant, OK, to continue his football career, but ultimately ended up choosing to rodeo instead. His love for the animals, roping and the level of difficulty that comes with roping calves played a part in Brown choosing the rodeo life. “It takes so many long hours to be successful at this sport and once you spend that kind of time on something it really becomes a part of you. Football was tons of time as well, but it’s the type of time you spend as well,” Brown said. “Rodeo, you work with animals that have a mind but no communication, so you build these unique bonds along the way. has prepared Brown to be the best rodeo athlete he can be. Mental and physical adversity are two similarities football and rodeo share. “Mental toughness is such a large part of both games. Athleticism only takes you so far in each as well. They take hard work and also a good ‘blueprint’ or plan,” Brown said. Brown experienced success early on in his professional career. He won the 2014 Resistol PRCA Tie-Down Roping Rookie of the Year and finished 28th in the world standings that year. Brown’s previous accomplishments and hard work have led up to the 2020 season. He had a good showing at San Antonio and hopes to carry that momentum into the spring and summer run. Helping him make these runs is a horse Brown calls “Spanky.” “He is only seven and hadn’t been away from home too much when I got

him last July. A very good friend of mine owns him, and I’m thankful every day for both of them,” Brown said. “He’s constantly evolving and becoming a better calf horse, but even on his worse days he doesn’t take much away from me. I was taught a horse that likes his job is like an airplane, and when an airplane crashes they investigate the pilot.” Any top athlete will say it is important to set goals, and Brown is no different. He is excited to see what the future holds, for himself and potential sponsors. Setting a good standard is important to Brown, as he chases his Wrangler National Finals Rodeo dreams. “I’ve taken a new approach this year with so many big, positive things going on,” Brown said. “A lot of my sponsors were built at the youth or amateur level, and that’s great, but if you are not seen as a business person or partner in those

“Life God’s Way”
From Pastor Randy Weaver Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” There is a battle engaged for your life - Jesus said in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Too many of God’s people are losing the battle - Marriages, children, finances, life. If you want to live an abundant life it starts with the spiritual. We spend great amounts of time on work, health (exercise), sports, and recreation - but so little time on the spiritual side of life. Cultivating our spirits becomes a job for the time that is left over or at best a job for Sunday mornings. Life in America looks like this - live any way you want to live, watch whatever you want to watch, fill your heart with the filth of the world. Everything else in life is more important than the spiritual things. God gets what is left over after everything else is finished. Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Jesus after offering the harshest stinging rebuke of all scripture tells us where life is to be found. It starts with the spiritual. If you want an abundant marriage- it starts with the Spirit. If you want an abundant life for your children - it starts with the Spirit. If you want abundance in life - it starts with the Spirit. Christ is the foundation for all these things. Abundant life begins with fanning the flame of the gift of God that is within us. We live in a world that sets its own rules for living. We need to look around and see what living by our rules has gotten us. Almost ½ of all marriages end in divorce, approximately 1/4th of all pregnancies end in abortion, almost 50% of our teenagers are sexually active before they graduate High School, more than 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 are living in single parent homes. What has all of this free living, making our own rules, going our own way gotten us? Do we live in a better world? Are we safer, more secure, or happier? Are our families better off? If you want to live abun-
COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM
dantly you have to do it God’s way. You cannot go your own way, do your own thing, and make your own rules and then expect God to bless it. God has given us an instruction manual for life. It gives us the rules for marriage, for purity, for raising children, for living and we ignore those rules to our own peril. The world thinks that living together outside of marriage is ok - God says it’s not - who wins? The
world says sex outside of marriage is a given - God says it’s not - who wins? The world says that little white lies never hurt anyone - God says Thou shalt not lie. who wins? The world says if it feels good do it - God says the body is not for immorality but for the Lord - Who wins? Do you want to live an abundant life? Do you want to live in the potential that God made for you? It’s time to find your purpose in life, time to make a change - a positive change - time to develop a plan and work that plan - it’s time to start focusing on the spiritual and living in accordance with God’s
plan. Wyatt Casper, Shad Mayfield share more than $1 million at The American
While it’s far from official, Wyatt Casper and Shad Mayfield are heading to the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. They’re also $600,000 richer. And that is official. Casper won the saddle bronc riding at RFD-TV’s The American, while Mayfield won the tie-down roping at AT&T Stadium, Sunday. Every event winner took home $100,000 from The Ameri-
can, with $50,000 counting toward the PRCA | RAM World Standings. But because they were qualifiers to The American, Casper, 23, and Mayfield, 19, split a $1 million bonus, paid out to qualifiers who won their event. That meant an extra $500,000 to Casper and an extra $500,000 to Mayfield. That wasn’t the only thing they shared Sunday. Both men entered the Shoot-Out round at The American
Cowboy Sports News Page 48 - April 2020
in their respective events as the top cowboy after putting up the best two-head averages. They also both entered as the top cowboys in their respective events in the world standings. But they differed when it came to enjoying their new-found wealth. “How much have I won or spent?” Mayfield quipped. Casper wasn’t exactly sure what $600,000 looked like. “I don’t think I’ve ever had more than $20,000 in my account at one time, $600,000 is going to be life-changing,” he said.
“I don’t have the slightest clue what to do with it.” The $50,000 toward the standings all but guaranteed the two will be heading to Las Vegas
and the Wrangler NFR when the regular season ends Sept. 30. They both have the same determination when it comes to the rest of the regular season. Casper entered the weekend with $66,645 in earnings, more than $20,000 ahead of his closest competitor. He added $53,000 to that total after Arlington. Last season, it took $90,811 to qualify for the Finals. Casper already has $119,645. Pencil him in for Finals trip No. 1. “I rodeo for a living,” he said. “I’m not satisfied until I can’t ride any more. I’m going to try and take advantage of every rodeo I can.” Mayfield has been one of the hottest cowboys on the rodeo trail. The 19-year-old entered The American with more money earned toward the world standings than any other competitor in any event – $77,701. Mark him down for $127,701 and save him a spot for his second consecutive Wrangler NFR. He’s surpassed his total from 2019 including last year’s Finals. He attributes this season’s success to last season’s struggles at the Finals. “When I got home (from the Finals), the next day I went right back to the practice pen,” Mayfield said. “I was pretty mad over it. It’s not a good feeling making the Finals having all the people look up to you and getting there and not doing very well.” In 2019, the No. 15 tie-down roper qualified for Vegas with $86,260. I think it’s safe to say Mayfield can make reservations to Las Vegas, even if he’s not old enough to gamble. And when he is old enough to gamble, you won’t want to bet against him. Mayfield’s ability to back in the box and go out and beat a time is quickly gaining fame. For him, however, he doesn’t see it that way. Needing to best 8.25 seconds in Arlington, “Money” Mayfield clocked a time of 7.75 seconds as the last man out. Mayfield might produce and look cool doing it, but there’s a

whole different look on the inside. “My heart is racing, especially running at a million dollars,” he said. “Right before that (run), I was adding up how much I was going to get, splitting it with Wyatt.” These two are destined to share something else – a little time in Las Vegas at the Wrangler NFR, Dec. 3-12. History repeated itself Sunday, and it couldn’t have gone any better for bareback rider Kaycee Feild. For the second time in three years, Feild rode C5 Rodeo’s Virgil to a victory at RFD-TV’s The American. Feild’s latest win came with a rodeo-record ride of 93 points aboard Virgil in the fourman Shoot-Out at AT&T Stadium. “That horse is good, and I knew I had to keep my head and my chin down and keep gassing it,” Feild said. “Tim (O’Connell), Clayton (Biglow) and Tony (Barrington), those guys are great competitors and beating them feels pretty good.” Orin Larsen had the rodeo record with a 91-point ride on Pickett Rodeo’s Top Notch in the Shoot-Out last year. Feild, a four-time PRCA world champion (2011-14), earned $100,000 for his win Sunday. He earned $433,333 when he won The American in 2018 with a 90.75-point ride on Virgil in the Shoot-Out. Of the $100,000 Sunday, $50,000 counted toward the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Virgil was the 2017 and 2018 PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year, and he lived up to his reputation again. “That horse is amazing,” Feild said. “He’s big and strong and it is different every time. Sometimes he comes around close and sometimes he goes straight and hops, and today he came around left and he meant business. The harder I spurred him, the harder he bucked. It was a lot of fun. That was probably the most memorable ride I have ever had in my career. I could hear his feet hitting the ground. I could hear my spurs hitting his neck. That was a good feeling. Then, getting off and hearing that crowd was a special moment for me.” Feild, of Genola, Utah, edged reigning PRCA world champion Clayton Biglow, who had a 91.75-point ride in the Shoot-Out. Feild advanced from the eight-man semifinals with 174.50 points on
COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM
two head. Feild wasn’t even in the top 50 in the world standings before The American, and now he will rocket up the standings. “This is going to allow me to rodeo smarter,” Feild said. “I’m 33, and in the bareback riding that’s pretty old. I don’t want to be one of those guys who goes until he’s 40, but at the same time I have big goals I want to accomplish. I have big things I want to do in this sport, and this helps a lot. This helps me chase down a world title. I’m going to (RodeoHouston) after this, and then I’m going to go home, take care of my body and get ready
for the summer and hit the rodeo trail really hard, harder than I did last year. I want to do this and win a world title and hang my hat up on top.” Feild, the son of the late ProRodeo Hall of Famer Lewis Feild, is thrilled about the present state of ProRodeo. “Rodeo just used to be kind of a hobby for the tough rancher, the tough farmer,” Feild said. “See if you can ride that horse and go win some money on the weekend, and that might be pretty good. Now, it is a career path, and the sport is getting better. The past three years in the sport of
rodeo have been better than my whole career, and it is only getting better and better, and there are more opportunities.” Other winners at The American were steer wrestler Matt Reeves (4.05 seconds); team ropers Luke Brown/Joseph Harrison (4.30 seconds); breakaway roper Kaycee Hollingback (2.17 seconds); barrel racer Stevi Hillman (15.405 seconds); and co-champion bull riders Sage Kimzey and Joao Ricardo Vieira. There were no qualified rides by bull riders in the four-man ShootOut.
