Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Roping right to left.. or both horns at the same time Lately I’ve found myself teaching a lot of beginner headers. For them, the answer is easy. They need to learn to rope right to left… first. When you rope both horns at the same time, you’re throwing straight forward and turning your thumb down. It’s like learning to put English on a cue ball before learning how to shoot a straight shot. For me, most of the steers I’ve headed have been both horns at the same time. But I can also run close, rope right to left, and catch a big horned steer that steps into me. Beginners normally compete in lower numbered ropings like the #7, #8, or #9. Most of those ropings have slow, big horned steers. Once you get close to the cow, roping both horns at the same time becomes more difficult. That’s why I didn’t teach my daughter to rope both horns at the same time. She’s had a lot of
success at being able to run close, rope right to left, and catch a high percentage of her cows. She also hasn’t missed much in the short round when it’s exciting and hearts are pounding. Once she became a #6 header, we started working on roping both horns and getting some range on her throw. Roping both horns at the same time is like throwing a baseball across the strike zone. If you let go a little early, you miss the left horn. If you hang on too long, you miss the right horn. During short rounds when your heart gets to pounding and you’re holding your breath from nervousness, these things play a factor. Don’t misunderstand, we’re not going to rope right to left at the rodeo. But at a #7 through a #10 roping where all you have to do is catch, it’s a simple mathematical equation to swing your rope over the horns, get in position, and cover a big area with your loop. Versus roping both horns at the same time where your margin of error is much
smaller. I’ve seen a lot of people throw an outstanding loop on the dummy and get a lot of action on their loop. But then when they’re roping steers, if the steer moves a few inches left or right they end up splitting the horns when all they had to do was catch. That’s why, in my opinion, roping right to left is much simpler when you’re trying to learn to rope, ride, and swing your rope. You will have a much higher catch percentage and more success. Once you can catch ten out of ten steers consistently, then yes, you need to learn to rope both horns at the same time. To reach you need to be able to rope both horns at the same time. What’s new with me: I truly don’t know how I survived without a roof over the arena while teaching. We’ve been very fortunate that once our covered arena was finished, we’ve stayed busy with schools and had a lot of clients. We don’t have sides on the building, which is nice because we have a pretty steady breeze that blows. The other day it was 101 but it was completely nice in the arena. Now once you rode out from under the roof it was brutally hot. When I teach private
schools, whether it’s new clients or my regulars, we start out roping steers. Just like Rich and I used to do. We practice then watch the video and break down what’s going on. I start out telling students to pretend they must faster than 11 seconds to win $350,000 in Vegas and for them to show me their run in that scenario. Then we do 9, 7, and 5 second runs. We usually run a few more and then get on a second horse. I like seeing them ride a second horse so I can tell if there’s a common problem on both, and how much of it was them or the horse. Then we go in and watch the video. I’m watching the left hand, the feet, and the swing and looking to see what is causing problems. Or what I call the chink in the armor. Every school is different. For some we spend more time on the Speed Trainer, and some we spend more time on the Hot Heels depending whether the focus is horsemanship or roping fundamentals. I truly enjoy teaching and having my kids there heading and heeling and helping me with schools, it makes it a family affair almost every day. Except now we don’t have to be in the rain or sun.

R&M Rodeo Photos 30 years is a long time. 3 decades. 360 months. I’m not sure how many dogs I’ve had in that time. They’re all buried under a big live oak in the pasture except for one that got stolen. I’ve had lots of horses, 5 different addresses, one wife, 7 different printers for printing the magazine and tons of late nights. But through 3 hurricanes, one almost tornado and numerous other emergencies including the birth of my son I’ve never been late like I have the last few months in getting this paper printed. The corona has crippled rodeo like nothing ever before in history. It has done what PETA and the Humane Society has tried for over a century. I have held up printing the last four months to accommodate the rodeo committees as they decided if a rodeo was even in their grasp as they dealt with changes coming out of Austin on a daily basis. No you can’t, well maybe you can, but you can only have 25% spectators, ok now you
can have 50%, wait, now you can only have 25% again. I have personally talked to many committeemen in the past few months and their hair is as short as mine after this pandemic. We thought long and hard about our future. We didn’t
know if we would be able to print a paper some months. Advertisers that you could set your clock by each year for an ad were calling and saying they weren’t having a rodeo this year. One by one they fell off of the list and with each one a little more profit fell from the balance sheet.
When they shut things down in March I thought we would never make this 30th Anniversary issue. It was five months away and things did not look good. Well, here we are. 30 years. 360 issues. 360 people surprised each month with their photo on the cover (except that month I said Ashley Castleberry was Jordi Edens, sorry ladies). 30 years is a long time to do any one thing. I have had advertisers that are no longer with us on this earth. I have made friends like I will never fully comprehend. Being Big Al’ is not always easy but it does come with perks sometimes when you need to enter a rodeo for Saturday night perf. I recently went back and looked at an issue from the beginning and it was crazy how much things have changed. Rodeo is not like it used to be but hopefully things will always get better. Thanks for 30 years.

have any land at the time, so it stayed at my grandparents place in Louisiana,” Mayfield said. “In 2008, we moved to Blue Ridge and built a horse boarding facility, which is where I currently live now. I started out going to local jackpots and play days but did not buy my first UPRA card until 2017 when I bought a mare named Twinkie.” Now, fellow UPRA barrel racer, Karsyn Daniels, owns Twinkie and has had plenty of success on the yellow mare, which is a testament to Mayfield’s training, hard work and riding style. For a younger rider to be able to win behind Mayfield says a lot, especially since she takes in quite a few outside horses for training and selling. “I really enjoy both sides of it. I love going to the rodeos and being able to compete, but I don’t haul a ton of young horses,” Mayfield said. “I do haul horses that have been started and need to be seasoned. It is such a cool feeling to watch those horses grow throughout the year.” Mayfield is not only extremely busy with horses, but she also has a job in town as well. “I currently work for a clinical psychology in McKinney, Texas,” she said. “I am in charge of inventory, customer service and product control where I work roughly 30 hours a week. I have 10 to 12 outside horses in for training at a time, so after work each day I care

Usually, she tries to go to as many rodeos as possible, but this year has had a little different feel to it. “My favorite rodeo so far this year has been Graham, Texas,” Mayfield said. “I felt like after coming off such a long break from quarantine, it was one of the tougher rodeos so far, and I placed at it.” Mayfield is one of many that are grateful for each and every rodeo still on the schedule now. “I stayed close to home this year and only went to Winnsboro and Whitesboro over the fourth,” she said. “I didn’t have the exact Fourth of July weekend I was hoping

I am just so thankful we are able to rodeo again and everything the rodeo committees are doing to make it possible.” Mayfield has some big goals she hopes to accomplish in the second half of 2020, both in and out of the arena. “I would love to make the circuit finals or qualify for the American semi-finals,” she said. “Those have been two pretty big goals of mine the last couple of years, and I really feel like I have good enough horses now to make it possible. Mayfield has had success on multiple horses throughout the years, making her a versatile rider. “I currently compete on a 12 year old gelding named JB and a seven year old mare named Crystal,” she said. “Both horses have so many great qualities, but they both excel in different ways.” Figuring out each horse’s strong points is what has made Mayfield excel in the arena herself. The family boarding facility is known as Blue Ridge Equestrian, although they no longer board horses anymore. Mayfield strictly trains out of the facility now, and that decision has paid off. She is having her best year yet; even with all of the ups and downs

Charlie 1 Horse BFI Ladies Ropings Pay $$$$ At the Charlie 1 Horse AllGirl Challenge Team Roping on June 24, Whitney DeSalvo of Springfield, Arkansas, left no doubt about her status as the world’s best female heeler. DeSalvo, just 25, took the top three placings with three different partners to haul a staggering $28,875 in cash back to Arkansas plus a truckload of prizes. The threetime WPRA world champion won the roping with Hope Thompson of Abilene, Texas, who raked in $20,750 total. “I just tried to rope every steer,” said DeSalvo, whose mare bucked on the very first run of the day, after which DeSalvo caught 11 of 11 steers on the second hop. “I didn’t even know what my times were.” Wrangler BFI Week, presented by Yeti, kicked off in Guthrie on June 20 and was anchored by the 43rd Bob Feist Invitational (BFI) for the pros on June 21. The five-day event paid out roughly $3 million in cash and prizes and was live-streamed on the Wrangler Network. It was moved to the Lazy E Arena due to a pandemic-forced closure of its usual venue in Reno, Nevada. Annually the richest all-female team roping in the country, this year’s Charlie 1 Horse Challenge fielded a record 184 teams from as far away as Arizona. The roping can be entered twice and has a pick-one/draw-one format that draws each contestant one extra partner. DeSalvo, classified as a 7.5, had recently worked on roping more aggressively. She continues to stay in touch with former PRCA world champion heeler Paul Eaves, for whom she worked years ago. In 2019, she was the lone female to team rope in the short round at the College National Finals Rodeo. In Guthrie at the high callback position, Thompson had to fish her head loop on, but DeSalvo said watching her partner split the horns meant she wasn’t nervous anymore. The pair salvaged a 9.72-second run for a four-head total that edged DeSalvo’s time with legendary world champ Lari Dee Guy by just two-tenths of a second. “I heard my partner holler, ‘You got him, you got him,’ so I turned off,” said Thompson. “I actually had a feeling this morning we were going to

win it. It feels just like 2017 for us.” Thompson and DeSalvo won that year’s WPRA world championship together. DeSalvo trains roping horses and works for an Arkansas couple, mentoring their young sons in roping. Thompson and Guy are professional ropers, too, and partners in their horse training business in Abilene. In Guthrie, Thompson was riding an 8-year-old sorrel called Andre that
has barrel-horse breeding and was started as a 4-year-old by Guy. While the Charlie 1 Horse team roping is open to the world, it also offers a #9.5 Incentive. The standalone competition is a sidepot with no extra fees for ropers with handicaps totaling 9.5 or less.
In Guthrie, Adrienne Picou of Carthage, Texas, happened to draw Thompson and the pair were the fastest Incentive team. Their time of 27.87 seconds on the first three steers won them $7,500 and made them sixth callback in the short round (where Picou missed). “That’s what I like about this roping, is that you get a chance to draw some of these great ropers,” said Picou, an orthopedic surgical implant technician. “This was my first BFI and
I was super excited I won money.” Thompson has entered the Charlie 1 Horse Challenge for years, but this was her first victory. “This is one of those ropings that’s a goal for any girl who team ropes,” she said. “The BFI is one you really want to win. The steers were great, and the start was, too.” Because Thompson, Picou and DeSalvo had nominated the AllGirl Challenge, they also earned direct berths to the Fast Track rounds of the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) inaugural Women’s Rodeo World Championship this November
in Las Vegas. The event at the South Point Hotel and Casino guarantees a $136,000 payout in each of breakaway, heading, heeling and barrel racing, plus a $20,000 bonus to the women’s all-around champion. Last year, Florida surfer Amanda Coleman moved on her own to Stephenville, Texas, to spend her final year of high school online, living and practicing with female calf ropers renting a home from Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) world champion Jackie Crawford. “My goal is to make a living breakaway roping,” said Coleman, 19. She’s well on her way. At the fourth annual Charlie 1 Horse Breakaway in Guthrie, Oklahoma, the rookie beat the world champs to win the first-place prize of $10,000 cash plus a trophy Cactus saddle, Gist buckle, Yeti cooler and more. The event drew a record 138 girls from across the country. It was the final jackpot of the fiveday Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti. The multi-million-dollar roping extravaganza anchored by the Bob Feist Invitational (BFI) was forced by the pandemic this year to move to Oklahoma from its usual home in Reno, Nevada. Since 2017, when BFI Week was the first
to add a lucrative breakaway roping to the all-girl team roping it has hosted since the 1990s, professional rodeos have followed suit. The trend has inspired countless girls like Coleman. “Getting to rope with women like this, and for this kind of money, is crazy,” she said. “Who would think you could drive four hours and win $10,000? You don’t hear about things like that.” True to conditions of the BFI, now in its 43rd year, hard-running calves were given a healthy head start. Just threetenths of a second separated the top eight heading into the short round, and Coleman reached at her calf to clock a quick 3.49-second run at eighth call-back. “We paid $800 for my mare, Chica, when she was 2,” said Coleman. “She’s 10 now.” The leaders yet to rope were her Stephenville heroes – Crawford, who has 19 WPRA world titles; J.J. Hampton who has 17; and the high callback was seven-time and defending world breakaway champion Kelcie Chase. After Coleman watched Crawford draw a runner and Hampton miss, she was “planning on winning second.” But Chase’s start was a bit late, and the defending world champ had to settle for second and $7,000. Coleman’s big win also earned her a berth into the Fast Track round of the Women’s Rodeo Championships and into the Rope for the Crown, both scheduled for Las Vegas in December. In the meantime, Coleman and her Texas traveling partners will hit the road for a big Fourth of July run to PRCA rodeos in Wyoming and South Dakota. MEET YOUR DIRECTORS rider. Our whole family is obvious- for people of all ages to compete, My name is Nicole Brown and I serve the CPRA as the Association Secretary. I have been working in the CPRA office since 2015; first serving as a part time secretary assistant until 2017, when I took over all office duties after the former secretary, Beverly Weekly retired. I come from a western family who rode horses and raised cattle. I attended and graduated from SHSU on a rodeo scholarship where I met my husband Jake, who is a professional bareback
ly drawn to the western life and rodeo. I have competed in rodeo, including being an active member in the CPRA as a barrel racer and working personnel for much of my life. I have held a variety of positions in many rodeo related jobs, which I think make me well rounded to best serve this association and its needs as the association secretary. I have a love for the western way of life in all aspects and would love to see the sport of rodeo grow and even thrive in todays world. The CPRA is a great asset
and grow relationships that will last a lifetime. I have such respect for the CPRA and what it has grown into, thanks to the hard work from the board members and employees that came before me. I try my hardest daily to make sure that the association is both growing to the future while holding on to the roots that were initially set when it was established in 1992. If you are applying for rookie status you must complete and sign the 2019 rookie application in addition to the standard membership application. If you were a CPRA 2018 rookie and did not win $1,500 or more, and did not win a 2018 rookie championship, then you are still eligible for a 2nd year. However, you still must sign the same forms as those first year applicants. If you’ve recently renewed your membership and did not complete the rookie application, you have 30 days from the date of your membership for the form to be received in the CPRA office.
MINOR RELEASES
If you are a minor (under the age of 18) you have 21 days from membership date to have the notarized minors release in the office or your entries will be stopped until the release is received. All minor members are required to have a minor release on file in the office, (one per year). CPRA reserves the right to ask for any additional paperwork/information if the board requests, contestant must provide in a timely manner. “One Nation - Under God” From Pastor Randy Weaver
There are a growing number of Christians who think that believers should not be involved in government and politics. There are several reasons for this attitude. They are afraid of promoting a social gospel. A social club within the church that substitutes culture for Calvary. They never talk about getting saved or the blood of Jesus. This is a viable concern. We need to keep our focus on getting people saved. There are those that have given up hope. They say, “it’s too late for America”, we’re past the point of no return, all that remains is judgment. Do not give up on America! There is hope, if we will do what the bible says. II Chronicles 7:14 says “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” God would rather forgive and restore than judge. There are those that see politics as dirty. They think that it’s beneath us as Christians and that all politicians are crooks. These people are so tired of scandals that they’ve lost their heart to be involved at all. Some Christians have been intimidated. They’ve heard so much about the separation of church and state that they’ve actually started to believe in it. In case you don’t know, that phrase never appears in the Constitution. It was coined in the U.S. from a letter the principle framer of the Constitution and third President Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Association assuring them that he would keep the government out of the Church (not the Church out of the government). The first amendment actually says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. If there is such a thing as separation of church and state, it is intended as a one-way street. Some say, no, they wanted to

keep both separate. Our first president, George Washington, took the oath of office and put his hand on the Bible. As his first official act as President he kissed the Bible and then held a two-hour praise & worship session in Congress. They open sessions of Congress with prayer, led by chaplains. Does all of that sound like they wanted to keep God out of government? President Ronald Reagan said “If we ever forget that we are ‘One nation, under God’, then we will be one nation gone under.” And so, as we look today at our
civic responsibility, the question is not, should a Christian be involved in government? The question is, can you be the Christian you are commanded to be and not be involved? We need to pray for our government. We need to praise our government. Despite all our problems the USA is still the greatest nation on earth. We need a revival of good old-fashioned patriotism! And we should honor our leaders, and all that are in authority. We should honor our parents for God placed them in authority over us. We should honor our spiritual leaders…like a missionary, who gives away his life, even his freedom, for the souls of others. We need to participate in government. It
is inconceivable that God would ordain government such as He has, and then tell His people to stay out of it. It is our Christian duty to get informed and vote. How can we really make a difference? The most patriotic thing we can do is not to set off fireworks, or sing a song, but to witness…to reach, teach, and disciple people for the glory of God. Let’s join our hearts together, and build a church that will stand as a great light to a dark and dying world. Spiritual freedom comes when you get saved! Husband-and-wife team wins $100K in #12.5 Showdown
Coming from the fourth callback position in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on June 22, team roping couple Hannah and Mike White of Dekalb, Texas, notched the biggest tandem win of their 21-year marriage. The duo roped four steers in 34.09 seconds to split the $100,000 first-place paycheck in the #12.5 Showdown of Wrangler BFI Week, presented by Yeti. Last year’s champion heeler, Clay Elkington, placed third this time to earn $25,000, bringing his individual two-year haul in the #12.5 to $61,000. And placing fourth in the roping was 22-year-old Wyatt Hershberger, for $20,500. His win barely surpassed the $18,875 his two little brothers hauled in during the Hooey Jr. BFI two days earlier. Anchored by the 43rd Annual Bob Feist Invitational for professionals on June 21, the five-day event includes eight affiliated amateur ropings and was held for the first time in the Lazy E Arena due to a pandemic-forced closure of its usual venue in Reno, Nevada. “We’ve never won anything big together,” said Mike White, who was wearing his 1999 PRCA gold buckle. “We struggle at it.” Mike, 43, earned nearly $2 million riding bulls – plus the gold buckle and a 2012 PBR Ring of Honor induction – prior to his 2010 retirement. “We rope so much at home, it’s exciting for a plan to come together,” said Hannah, who rode a roan gelding that Mike had acquired to train and later bought. “Our only fights have come in the
roping pen. We work so hard at it, and we’re both very competitive. I don’t care if we’re going to the concession stand, Mike will say ‘I’ll beat you over there.’” Their final steer ran down the right fence, but White, a 7.5 heeler, had him roped on the second hop. But it works the same here. No matter what steer I draw, I know I can catch it by two feet. It works in any sport to be confident in what you can do.” A Louisiana native, Mike trains roping horses and runs cattle when he’s not working as a ringman at regional auctions. In Guthrie, with his good horse hurt, Mike rode a 5-year-old gelding he’d trained and sold to his friend Ryan Caldwell. “We wouldn’t be here without Ryan,” said Mike. “He talked us into entering.” The Whites’s two sons, Logan, 16, and Morgan, 8, watched the big win, and the family was scheduled to be back in Dekalb the next day for Morgan’s baseball game. Because Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti had to be abruptly moved from Nevada to Oklahoma in order to happen in 2020, organizers decided to let the books stay open. Anyone could walk up and enter the eight amateur ropings held as part of BFI Week, anchored by the 43rd Annual Bob Feist Invitational for professionals. It paid off for a pair of Texans on June 23. Ricky Oliver didn’t know Russ Cook was in Guthrie until he happened to bump into him in the Lazy E Arena about an hour before the 9.5 Over 40 roping. They decided to enter the event, now in its second year as part of the BFI Week roster, having arrived in Guthrie to rope in the brand-new 10.5 Over 40 with other partners. “We’ve roped together off and on for some 15 years,” said Oliver.

Actually, I was looking at buying a new horse, and I can buy it now. Winning something at the BFI is right up there with winning something at Las Vegas. We only had to beat 91 teams to win $50,000!” Cook once entered the actual BFI, years ago, and for years he traveled the 30 hours to Reno from his home in Magnolia, Texas, for the June event. A smooth final run gave them the $50,000 win by four seconds. “I don’t get too nervous,” said Cook, whose previous biggest single paycheck was $16,000. “I try to get out good and catch, then look at the steer’s eye; just pick his eye up and move out of there.” The win felt good to Cook, who just 14 months ago was bucked off and broke nine ribs, a collarbone and his foot. The rancher and trucking company owner from Magnolia is known for riding nice head horses. He has about six
skipped the past couple of editions, and Oliver hasn’t been to Reno in at least a dozen years. Both ropers would love to see BFI Week stay in middle America. The reason the event was able to relocate to the Lazy E was in part due to the accommodation of Lazy E Ranch owner – and team roper – Gary McKinney, who also made the 9.5 Over 40 short round with ProRodeo Hall of Fame bullfighter Rob Smets.
