Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Cowboy Code One thing my father instilled in me was you never drove by a truck and trailer on the side of the road without stopping to see if they need help. I’ve been many, many miles in my career and have stopped many times and also been broken down and received help. That’s what this story is about. Our new covered pen has been a blessing and I’ve been very fortunate to have had lessons booked solid for the last few weeks. It’s nice but does make for some very long days. Hali’s been practicing her Breakaway either before or after lessons for the last couple of weeks in preparation for the Texas High School Finals. This year, due to Covid, rather than all regions competing throughout the week, two regions compete each day and then leave. We drew up in the first set on Monday at 8 a.m. The day before I had a lesson booked from 1-5 and was scheduled to leave our house at 5:30. My wife went with Hali in one pick up and Gabe and I would follow when we were finished with our lesson. As things often go, we were running late and by the time we headed out it was 10 p.m. We were pretty tired, but it’s not a huge deal since Abilene is not quite an hour away.
One thing I stress to my kids is the importance of being prepared and getting enough rest. I didn’t want to wake Hali if she was sleeping, so I called Jennifer and she said they were still up and it was fine to come on. About the time we get to Cross Plains, as I come around a curve we see a truck and trailer in the ditch with their lights on. I had passed it by the time I could see it and as tired as I was, started to keep going on to Abilene. I drove about three miles and started thinking about my kids traveling and how many times people have stopped to help me so we turned around. There’s a 75-year-old man, Rodney Green, with a blow out on the left front of his truck. His jack won’t fit under the truck, the ground was uneven and you’d have to be in the road, right in a curve, trying to change the tire. I told him I didn’t think we could get it changed and asked where he lived. He said that he lived about an hour and a half on the other side of Abilene and was just going to sleep in his truck and get help in the morning. I said, “No, I’m not leaving you and your horse on the side of the road. It’s too dangerous.” We get hooked up to his trailer and head out. I hear him on the phone quietly telling someone to go borrow the neighbor’s flatbed and meet him in Abilene. I asked him, “Are
you talking to anyone but your wife?” I did not want his wife to have to do that. I told him to let her to stay in bed and we would take him home. He was very entertaining and fun to talk to. It was amazing how many people we knew in common. He tried to pay us and we refused. He told us about picking up Leo and Gerald Camarillo once in Albuquerque, NM and helping them. I said, “Consider that debt paid.” Here’s where our good deed backfires a little. When I picked up Rodney, I called my wife and told her what was happening and we’d be in around 1 or 2. It ended up being closer to 3 a.m. and Gabe and I made the decision to get a motel room rather than wake everyone sleeping in the trailer. We’d just get there in the morning in time to watch Hali do her drills on the Speed Trainer and rope. I thought about texting Jennifer and letting her know we had gotten a room but didn’t want to wake them when they had to get up in a couple of hours. Our family has the 360 app so we can locate each other and I knew she could find me if she needed to. Gabe and I get laid down about 3:30 and we’re both exhausted. I turned my ringer off and went to sleep. About 3:45 Gabe’s phone rings and I hear him mumbling. I’m not really awake but am aware enough to know he’s talking to his mom. I hear him say “I love you” and hang up. At 3:30 Jennifer had woken up and we weren’t there. All she knew was that we had picked up a stranger and were late. She couldn’t get me on
the phone. She called Gabe who was mumbling incoherently. At 4:00 the front desk of the motel calls and says my wife is in the lobby and wants to know if they can send her up. When I look out the peep hole, I do not see a happy wife. When I open the door, she says, “You pick up a stranger and tell me you’re going to be late and then you don’t come home.” I tried to tell her that I didn’t want to wake them and that she could find me with the 360 app. Apparently Gabe and I both had turned the app off at some point. Gabe asked me, “Dad how did we do a good deed and get in trouble?” I just told him, “Son when you pick up a stranger you need to let you mama know if you’re not coming home.” I couldn’t blame her for being scared and upset. Needless to say, that won’t happen again and I will send a text next time. I have been blessed many times during my rodeo career with people helping me in times of need. I’ve loaned trucks to people I didn’t know. It’s always been in the back of my mind that my dad would kick me square in the butt if I didn’t stop and help. What’s new with me: Both kids are competing at their state finals. At this moment Hali is in the short go in the Breakaway at Abilene and next week Gabe will rope in Gonzales. We love our new indoor. It is so nice having a roof over our head and being able to stay out of the sun while I’m teaching. We are on top of a hill and usually have a nice breeze. We just need a few more hours in the day to get a little more sleep.

R&M Rodeo Photos In all of the pandemic chaos we lost one of the good ol’ boys in rodeo last month. The first time I ever met him was at a youth rodeo in Bryan, Texas at the old Tabor Road arena. I think I was probably a senior in high school. If you’ll remember back to 1987 I’m pretty sure Spud’s McKenzie was a big promotional gig for Budweiser. It was basically just a dog like the one from Little Rascals. He was a chick magnet and all of the girls came around him during the beer commercials. Well when we got to this rodeo, they were selling Circle 5 Rodeo Company Rodeo Spud t-shirts. We all had to have one. I wish now I would have kept mine. It probably would have been a collectors item by now. Fast forward 10 years and I was putting on the 1st Annual Texas Sling calf roping in Brenham. We needed sponsors and he stepped up to make sure we didn’t lack anything for the
cowboys. We didn’t even have to talk him into it. He just said what do you need and he gave us 100% of what we needed. A little over a year later my son was born. One day in the mail I had a slip for an oversize package. I went up to the counter and the package was huge. I couldn’t imagine what could be in this box. As soon as I got in the truck I opened the package only to find a custom black felt hat with the words stamped in gold on the sweatband, “Custom Made For Carson Jeffrey.” To say we were surprised was an understatement. It was not expected but I guess knowing who it was coming from I should have expected nothing less. That hat will become of part of our son’s legacy to pass down to his kids one day. We became longtime customers of each other. Me wearing his hats and him ordering buckles for all of his devoted girls and hands for their service. He never failed to drive a
hard bargain but he also never failed me. He came back year after year to show his dedication just like the people he was ordering the buckles for. His boys hated to see me coming because they pretty much knew I was swapping out my invoice for a hat or two. When we lost Sammy Catalena we lost one from the old school. When they say they broke the mold they meant it with guys like Sammy. He was old school and he was loyal. I could almost set my watch by him calling me each for his ads. If he forgot and I had to call him it was only because he was so wrapped up in some local community project. His family can be proud of his legacy. RIP Sammy Catalena.

CNFR Qualifier Meets Positivity & Disappointment Head On By: Baylee Jankowski Bright yellow banners, dirt slinging, the smell of cattle and horses and thousands of rodeo fans should have filled the Casper Event Center in June for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming. Hundreds of college students from ten regions across the nation that would have made the
trip to Casper, Wyoming will now be dreaming of what could have been. Years of hard work both in the classroom and in the arena to earn this spot, only to have it taken away because of COVID-19. Some students saw their dreams slipping away and were resentful. Other students, chose to look at what they had gained from their years of college rodeoing rather than what they were missing out on. Whitley
Whitewood, a Texas A&M Commerce graduate student chose to look at the positive. Stephanie Adamson, a licensed professional counselor said she believes in the power of positivity. Adamson has a Master of Arts in Community Counseling from Denver Seminary, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and has been practicing as a mental health counselor for almost 8 years. “Our thoughts have a
huge influence over our emotions, which in turn influences our behavior,” Adamson said. “Someone that focuses on positive thoughts is more likely to have positive feelings and healthy and productive behaviors.” Remaining positive despite disappointment is important in helping one move on and have a healthier response. That is precisely what Whitewood does. A season of success Whitewood, competed in the NIRA southern region while working towards her master’s degree. “I rodeoed for Texas A&M Commerce this year while getting my master’s,” Whitewood said. “I competed in the barrel racing and breakaway roping and was elected the Southern Region Director.” Whitewood won the region in the barrel racing and was second in the all-around. Had the College National Finals Rodeo taken place, she would have competed in both the barrel racing and breakaway roping. “I ended up winning the barrels in the eight rodeos we had,” Whitewood said. “And then I ended up second in the all-around which means if we would have had the college finals, I would have taken both events.” Instead of focusing on not getting to compete at the CNFR, Whitewood said that she chose to enjoy what she gained from the year. “I said this whole year, I am going to enjoy every single minute,” Whitewood said. “I get to work as a real estate agent, I’m able to rodeo and I’m able to get it all paid for. It’s been the best year.” Dream team According to Whitewood, the Texas A&M Commerce team was on track for success following the Texas A&M University NIRA rodeo. “We actually swept the women’s team,” Whitewood said. “Mia Manzanares won the breakaway, she won the goats, I won the barrels, she won the allaround and then we won the women’s team. We were winning the region and were the number one team in the nation.” With the remainder of the season looming, Whitewood said the Texas A&M Commerce women’s team chose to look at

Continued from page 13 what they had accomplished instead of what they could lose. “We were talking that last night that if that was the last one, which we knew it very well could be, then we went out with a bang,” Whitewood said. A season cut short The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association is the governing body of college rodeo. The NIRA National Office is in charge of making decisions for the NIRA as a whole and the College National Finals Rodeo. “It is with very heavy hearts that the NIRA National Office announces the cancelation of the 2020 College National Finals Rodeo, June 14th-20th,” stated the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association in a press release. Whitewood reflected on what a special and talented team she was able to be a part of. “We were taking six events which is a full team and not a lot of schools get to do that,” Whitewood said. “The kind of talent we had, we were all veterans, we had all been there and done that. That was what was special all year long.” Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, Whitewood said that she reflected on what they had been able to accomplish. “My goals this year were to win the barrels, make it in the all-around and to win the women’s team and I did all of those things,” Whitewood said. “Yes, it’s terrible that we can’t go back to the college finals but we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish.” The power of positivity Adamson said that controlling our thoughts towards a difficult situation is very important in how we respond. “When difficult or disappointing circumstances arise, we aren’t always able to control the situation, but we are able to control our thoughts about the situation and how we respond,” Adamson said. Hailey Bruening, a former roommate and teammate of Whitewood, said she has witnessed Whitewood’s positivity both in and out of the rodeo arena. “Whitley is truly a light,” Bruening said. “She is always super positive even when things don’t go her way.”

Bruening said she was impressed at Whitewood’s positivity despite the cancellation of the CNFR. “I am amazed at how Whitley is handling the situation,” Bruening said. “She so easily could be upset and focused on the opportunities that were taken away from her but she chooses to be thankful and look towards the future.” Adamson agrees that Whitewood’s positivity is a big part in allowing her to be thankful and look towards the future. “If you choose a positive attitude, you are more likely to move on more quickly and be open to new opportunities that come along,” Adamson said. On to the next one Despite the CNFR being cancelled, Whitewood said that she is ready to close the college rodeo chapter of her life and seek new opportunities. “College rodeo has done so much for me, Whitewood said. “I told myself you’ve reached all of your goals here, you’ve accomplished what you want to accomplish, continue on with your life. You’ve done your work here.” Looking toward the future, Whitewood said that she is ready to take the next step in her life. “My plan is to enter the barrels in the fall rodeos around here and see how much money I can get won,” Whitewood said. “Breakaway is growing like crazy so that is something I want to continue to pursue. I am definitely excited about my career as a real estate agent.” Adamson said that she believes in counting blessings rather than what has been taken away. “Research shows that people who choose to focus on their blessings have a better quality of life,” Adamson said. Instead of focusing on what might have been, Whitewood said that she chooses to be thankful. “My main word has been thankful. Thankful for the opportunity to rodeo for some of the best schools with two of the best coaches in the nation, thankful for the memories, the friends and the lessons I’ve learned in these four years,” Whitewood said. “It’s been a complete blessing; college rodeo has done so much for me.”

sional rodeo to date and is currently fifth in the world with $27,790.06 won from 16 rodeos. Hurst has worked extremely hard to be where she is at today and has been a competitive rider for most of her life. “I was born and raised in Minnesota,” Hurst said. My parents put me on a horse at the age of two, and I was hooked. I started barrel racing on ponies at a very young age.” She now resides in Springer, OK with her husband, Clay, where they both love to spend time training performance horses for barrel racing and roping. “I love to rope, both breakaway and team rope. I’ve just been focusing mostly on barrel racing right now but would love to get a rope horse again and get back to it,” she said. “In high school, I did all events. Throughout the years you could say I’ve done it all, western pleasure, English and cutting. My heart just always leads me back to barrel racing.” That focus is paying off, as she continues to climb the ranks of professional rodeo. She has worked her way up through the barrel races and amateur rodeos and has learned how each level of competition presents different challenges. “You have to know how to keep everything together out on the road,” Hurst said. “You don’t get the opportunity

The pair won the Reno rodeo last year, and Hurst finished the year 24th in the world. This year has been anything but normal. Hurst was on a roll early in 2020, winning third at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo and second in the first round at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, CO. Then, the “pandemic” hit, and her Rodeo Houston dreams were cut short. Although she was disappointed she could not compete at NRG Stadium, like a true champion she does not dwell on the negative setbacks. She eventually got to finish out her Super Series at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, and she also picked up right where she left off by splitting fourth place at Cave

Depending on the day, Hurst may spend extra time training a young one, tune on a seasoned horse or help others by hosting a few clinics of her own. “For me specifically, I have a little of everything going on,” she said. “I have some really nice young horses that this time has been so much fun to finally get to give the time they need to get ready. I have also worked my two 13 year old rodeo horses who are getting bored with no where to go.” Hurst has a trailer full of talented horses ready to go down the road, and she has learned something from each of them during her

Even though much of 2020 may still be up in the air, Hurst is hopeful she will get the chance to run down the alley at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo this year. “I just know what my end goal is, and that keeps me motivated,” she said. “You can’t accomplish big things with little effort. Me and my horses both have a daily fitness routine, so we are ready to go when it’s time.” When that time comes, Hurst looks forward to seeing all the beautiful places across the country and competing with the best in the business. Lovins and McGuire win Hooey Junior BFI and $20K Jordan Lovins of Canadian, Texas, had never been to the Bob Feist Invitational. But when he heard that Wrangler BFI Week, presented by Yeti, moved to his neighboring Oklahoma from Reno, Nevada, he “was all over it.” Lovins, 17, hauled his steers to his local fairgrounds to practice under BFI-like dimensions and found someone with fresh steers so he could practice on a herd similar to the hard-running set of BFI Week. He capitalized by winning first and second – switching ends – for $15,900 in the third annual Hooey Junior BFI. “This is the coolest roping!” he said. “Most places don’t score the steers out there or have a five-head average. Here, you have to try a lot more.” As one of the richest team ropings in the world for kids 17 and under, it’s patterned after the richest Open roping in the world – the 43-year-old Bob Feist Invitational. The Hooey Jr. BFI consists of the Jr. Open and the Jr. 10.5, which limits individual ropers’ classifications
to #6. Both ropings also serve as direct qualifiers to the annual Jr. World Finals in Las Vegas. In the Open, Lovins was third call-back with 17-year-old header Chase Sandstrom of Comfort, Texas. “I was trying to rope them all on the third hop, but we got a barrier on the first one,” explained Lovins, a 7.5 heeler who rides about eight head of rope horses at home. “So the next three, we blasted.” They placed in a round. Then, in the finals, their 8.12-second run had them winning the roping with a five-head time of 45.67. Lovins immediately high-loped back up the moat to get on his head horse – a bay roan that came from NFR team roper Tyler Magnus – as the second call-back. “Heading’s easier,” said Lovins, a No. 6 on that end. “On the first four steers, I threw a coil or two, so in the short round I figured I’d whip my horse up there and get closer.” He and Chase McGuire stopped their fifth one in 8.53 to go
to the lead with a 43.47 on five. The high team of Kreece Thompson and Sterlin English had a monster cushion and needed only a 14-second run for the win, but Thompson missed. “I don’t mind being backto-back, but I’d much rather have earlier (slower) callbacks,” said Lovins, who is home-schooled and will be a senior this fall. “I hate sitting back there waiting because I get to overthinking it. That heeling run released so much pressure for me, though.” McGuire, 15, of McAlester, Oklahoma, has only been heeling about a year since he switched ends. He had also never been to Reno or seen the BFI but said he has watched film of every edition since before he was born. “Jordan and I normally heel against each other,” McGuire said. “But I wanted him to head for me here.” The two had seen each other rope at high school rodeos. Sandstrom, meanwhile, earned a cool $11,265 on the day because he also placed second in the Junior 10.5 roping with his little brother Cade, who just turned 13. They’d led the roping early and maintained their second-place standing with a short-round run of
8.79 to split $11,330. It was little Cade’s first big competitive event. Armed with mentorship from the likes of Bret Beach and Rich Skelton, he heels on a Paint pony he got for his birthday last year as a purchase from Skelton, whose daughter roped and tied goats off him. The 10.5 was won by Arizona’s Gavin Hershberger and Denton Dunning, who split $16,500 for their time of 29.85 on four. Then they turned around and placed fourth in the Open, as well, to earn $25,750 on the day. In the 10.5, they were the high-call team and needed an 11-second run to move into first. They were smooth in 8.25 to win the roping by more than three seconds. “I just got this brown horse,” said Hershberger, whose family bought the gelding this year at their sale from seven-time world champion Jake Barnes. “I love him. He scores really well and runs hard. He’s easy to ride.” Gavin’s total haul on Saturday was $10,225, since he also earned go-round money with his brother, Garrett. The latter brother, meanwhile, also placed fourth in the 10.5 roping with Luke Gee to earn $4,350.

ATTENTION CONTESTANTS We have rodeos on the schedule coming up, if a rodeo is on the schedule and has entry dates, that rodeo is planning to have their event, however please understand, the pandemic of COVID-19 is changing daily, sometimes hourly. We should all expect changes, more reschedules and possibly some late cancellations. We will do our best to keep everyone updated as possible. All information we have on each event will be included with entry information. It is our hope we can successfully help rodeo committees and stock contactors get rodeos up and running again. Every community, city, county, and state are different, rodeos may be heavily modified to follow compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines. Guidelines for compliance at rodeos will be mandatory and strictly enforced, we strongly suggest everyone consider what is expected, if you cannot comply with the expectations, please do not enter, and/or attend the event. Non-compliant actions will be disqualified and ask to leave. Restrictions are not only mandatory, but also essential to the safety of everyone competing, working, and attending the event. We take the health crisis of COVID-19 very serious, slowing the spread by following guidelines in place is priority, however each person must make a personal decision as to their participation in an event, should you choose to attend/compete, the cities, counties, states, rodeo committees, stock contractors, personnel, associations and/or those contracted at any rodeo will not be responsible for any outcome that may be experienced.

CPRA RODEOS ENTRY INFORMATION: For all CPRA 1st approved rodeos enter at 800-54-RODEO (800-547-6336). Entry dates and hours are posted on each rodeo listing. Contestants will have a 1st preference backed with a 2nd preference on a 1st come, 1st served basis. When entering have your card number or last four digits of your social security and be prepared to write your confirmation number. No call backs. After books have closed the draw will be posted at www.rodeosportsnetwork.com. Trades will be accepted in the CPRA office after books close. All parties involved in trades must contact office. ROOKIE APPLICANTS
If you are applying for rookie status you must complete and sign the 2019 rookie application in addition to the standard membership application. If you were a CPRA 2018 rookie and did not win $1,500 or more, and did not win a 2018 rookie championship, then you are still eligible for a 2nd year. However, you still must sign the same forms as those first year applicants. If you’ve recently renewed your membership and did not complete the rookie application, you have 30 days from the date of your membership for the form to be received in the CPRA office.
MINOR RELEASES
If you are a minor (under the age of 18) you have 21 days from membership date to have the notarized minors release in the office or your entries will be stopped until the release is received. All minor members are required to have a minor release on file in the office, (one per year). CPRA reserves the right to ask for any additional paperwork/information if the board requests, contestant must provide in a timely manner. family. Madison our daughter was 15 so we were pretty much starting over. It has been great and I would not change it for anything!
Hey Everyone I am back! I took a “ Covid” break and I have to say I am over it! This month I went behind the scenes of a rodeo family we all know. 2014 Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall Of Fame Inductee, Ricky Canton. Many people know that Ricky and I are like family. We go way back! The Canton’s produce ropings in Navasota, Texas now catering to the youngsters as a foundation for them to build on while they progress up the ranks.
Sunny: I have to assume with your & Christy’s background in rodeo that both your children have been involved in rodeo? Ricky: Madison started roping in her teens probably. When she became a teenager and her friends were competing she wanted to get more involved. She went to the YRA’s and some high school rodeos and roped pretty good. She is married to team roper, Cody Pierce now and they have 2 sons, Canton & Case. She is a beautician and Cody runs his own Hydro Mulch business. Our son Coleman has started to come into his on in youth rodeos and Jr. High rodeos as well as the jackpots. Seems like every weekend we aren’t putting on a roping we are at a roping.
Sunny: Ricky tell us how you got your start in rodeo? Ricky: My dad Jimmy Canton was in the IPRA & PRCA and roped all of my life and still competes today. So it was pretty much what went on around our house. So you roped and worked or you just worked! I grew up in Aldine, Texas. Our “ranchette” consisted of 2 acres so not a lot of ranch work! lol Sunny: When did you start your pro PRCA career? Ricky: I went to a lot of jr rodeos, YRA and jackpots and anywhere they would let me enter. I was not as big as most of the ropers so I had to pick and choose and really work on my skills. 1987 was my rookie year in the PRCA and also the first of 2 times I won Cheyenne Frontier Days which helped me earn my 1st NFR. From there I had 15 qualifications to The NFR. Sunny: What would you say or some Hilights of your career? Ricky: I guess I would have to say setting the World Record in the Tiedown roping in 2005 at The Strathmore Stampede. I was 6.3. I also won the rodeo in 2003. But 2005 I went on to win Cheyenne and Ogden Utah which really boosted me up in the standings. That got me to my 15th NFR. Sunny: Wow! That is awesome I see by your trophy room that you have won several big rodeos. Ricky: I won a few good ones, Albuquerque, Guymon, Rodeo Royal,
Jackson, Ellensburg, San Antonio to name a few and several big ropings such as the Mobetta, Bob Cosby & The Windy Ryon. I am also a 2 time CPRA Champion Calf Roper 1993 & 1999. Several times to the TPRA & CPRA finals. Sunny: Who would say is your biggest supporter throughout your career? Ricky: I have to say most of my career would not have been possible if it had not been for a man named Bill Fick. He has sponsored and supported me in my rodeo career for 19 years and now my ropings. He is a great man and friend and he and his wife Amy have become more family than friends. He has been a huge blessing. My dad’s family has
stood behind me and Stephen Perry has always been a great friend & mentor and supporter as well. Sunny: Tell the readers a little about your family life? Ricky: I was married to my 1st wife Jeri and have a daughter Madison. Jeri passed away in April of 1999 to cancer. In 2000 I met Christy Coleman who also roped and grew up in a rodeo family. We got along really well and had a lot of things in common. In 2002 we married. We have been married 18 years this year. Christy was a flight attendant and I was still going pretty hard so we stayed on the road most of the time. Her family is from Oregon where they have a big cattle ranch and so a lot of time was spent there with them working cows and ranching between rodoe’s. In 2007 we welcomed our son Coleman into the

Sunny: Christy how dd you get your start in the rodeo end of things? Christy: My dad was a PRCA bareback & bullrider. We traveled quite a bit watching my dad compete in various rodeos. We always had horses at the ranch. One day they had a big youth rodeo come to Mollala and my mom went down there and entered us all up! I was around 10 or 11 I think. From that day on we were all pretty much hooked. After that my mom hauled all us Coleman kids around the Northwest to all the rodeos all the way to high school where I think between all the kids my mom had 15 years of high school rodeos! Sunny: What are some of your career highlights & is your career over? Christy: I have 3 college National Finals qualifications. 2 from Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton & 1 from Tarleton State University. My freshman year I was out with a broke leg. I also have 3 High School National qualifications. I went to the amateur rodeos in the earlier 2000’s after college and after Ricky and I first got married. I entered all the ropings and the CPRA rodeos. Being a flight attendant and with a daughter it got to hard so I stopped competing but still roped at home.
I still enjoy roping. Most of the time I just work, turn out calves & untie them while my son ropes. Sunny: I visited with Coleman as well and got a few words out of him! I ask what were some of his goals he has set for himself? Coleman: I’m focused on jr high state and my events there. Then plan to go to Oregon and see our family there. All my cousins will be there as well as my Aunts & Uncles. I love ranching with my Pappy Steve then playing eating and visiting with the whole family. In August when I go back to school I will focus on my football. I am the quarterback for the 8th grade team in Navasota for the Rattlers. I will play this year and see how it goes and if I will carry it on into high school. Team roping & calf roping take a lot of my time so it is hard to say if I will continue to play. I have several horses I have to take care of and to play football and practice then come home and rope and ride is pretty hard sometimes. I like roping and seeing all my friends at all the events. Sunny: What are some of your accomplishments inside the arena? Coleman: Well I have won the Patriot 12 & Under 2 years as well as the Patriot 12 & under Tiedown this year. I won the Breakaway in Vegas as well. It has been pretty cool getting to go to Vegas and compete knowing my dad was there so many times. Hopefully one day I will be at the NFR like my dad. Sunny: Is football the only sport you have played other than rodeo? Coleman: No ma’am I have played basketball, baseball as well. I have to say I love to fish. It is a competition as well. My dad and I see who can catch the biggest fish. I usually always win! I also have two little nephews and I spend a lot of time with them. Sunny: I asked the Canton family where they see their future in calf roping? Ricky & Christy: We have been putting these ropings on 14 years and have seen a lot of talent come through here. We hope to continue having these series that any age roper can compete in and keeping our 12 & under events strong so that every kid that wants to has a place they can come start and work on their talents and find their stride in the arena. We also enjoy getting to know these kids and helping them and watching them grow.

Many times, we act as if God is short on blessings. Your neighbors are blessed and you are not, or at least not the way you want to be blessed. So, you get jealous, upset, frustrated and mad.

more enduring. People said you’re not qualified, you are not supposed to be here. You should have given up years ago, but you were born to run. People said you couldn’t make it, they said you would fail. They said your business would fail, your job wouldn’t last, your marriage would fail, your children would fail, your church would fail, they said you wouldn’t stay sober. They said you couldn’t live clean, that you’re just a “footmen.” But today, we wake up, get up, toughen up & run. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain. I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I

It’s time the righteous started living righteous. Here is how God responds to Jeremiah and to us. Jeremiah 12:5 says, “If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses?” Footmen can’t take you out, you have reserves along the way, you have oil in your lamp, springs of water in your spirit and you’re headed in the right direction. You’re headed for the end zone. When things get tough, you just get tougher, you excel under pressure. You have peace in your heart because you have learned and trained to run with the horses. You’re not distracted by the
