San Antonio, Texas 78232. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. on a first come first served basis. The purpose all stated meetings is to receive and ballot on petitions to receive committee reports, to discuss and take possible action on matters as might come before it. We are very appreciative of your devotion and commitment to this country we call home. Your willingness to serve and the sacrifices made during your term of service- We honor you and salute you! We also celebrate the time of harvest and the hard work that encompasses this effort. It is a time of gathering and festivity. Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Bring on the stretchy pants. The close of this year is no longer creeping upon us, it is nigh. We still have items on Alzafar’s punch list: Our Shrine Memorial, commemorating all Nobles who now reside at the side of the Great Architect, their memories for ever with us to keep and hold. Alzafar’s Hospital Gala is soon to make its appearance, an evening full of merriment, supporting our great mission. Our Christmas party for Alzafar’s young ones and in between all of these we have your unit/association’s holiday festivities. Your Divan continues to run on all cylinders, the momentum continues; let us bring in the passing of Shrine year 2021 in fine fashion, health, and merriment.

Hello Alzafar!!! We hope all is well with you and your family. As we enter the holiday season let us enjoy this time with friends and family. Continue to make memories that will last a lifetime. Take some time to reflect on our lost love ones. Remember our service men and woman that may be away from their families during this time of year as they are providing the freedoms that we all enjoy. This month we will also celebrate Veterans day. This is an opportunity to honor all that served or serving our great nation. Whether its past or present we honor you all greatly and we appreciate and thank you all for your service.

Can you believe the year is almost over? We are now in November and only have one month left for this year. Last month was a busy month for Alzafar as we had an opportunity for some fun and fellowship. As the year is coming to an end, we can only hope that everyone has had an outstanding year. We have enjoyed another year serving you all on the Divan. We have continued to make memories and new friends that we will keep forever. We only hope that we have made you all proud and that we continue making the best decisions we can for Alzafar moving forward.

We look forward to having the opportunity to sit and visit with you all really soon. If there is something we can do for you or you have suggestions for us please don’t hesitate to stop and talk with us when you see us. Thank you again for allowing us to lead you. In the meantime, continue to stay positive and test negative.

Marco Zuniga High Priest & Prophet of Alzafar Shriners Greeting my fellow Nobles! It’s been so great to finally see everyone coming around again.

What have you missed, and what’s coming up? First off, congrats and welcome again to our new nobles. We had 18 participate in ceremonial this year. Thank you to the directors staff for putting it together and all the units who came out to support. Great way to step up Alzafar! You showed our new nobles, thier wives and families the unity we have.

If you missed it, we had an 8ft pizza, dinner, dance and fezzing. It was a great day for fun and fellowship, and a great time was had by all.

Mike Long Oriental Guide of Alzafar Shriners Thank you to all who volunteered for setup and breakdown for the Children’s Halloween Party! It was a great event, and I hope all who attended had a wonderful time. Looking forward I will need some help with the Christmas Party too. We will need you donations for all age groups to 16 years old, both boys and girls. If you would leave them with the ladies in the office and let them know what the gift is for. Please bring them unwrapped so we know which group/gender to place them in. If you have any check please get them into Tommy. Please reach out to me and let me know if your able to volunteer, my contact info is below. I’m fresh out of O.G. School also, wow what I learned there! The obvious is our membership across all Temples. It is declining a a rapid rate, we all know that. When your out and about, wear Masonic or Shriner shirt, hat, or anything else that may spark up a conversation. Remember I’m giving away a big screen TV for the noble who top line signs the most new nobles this year. Our philanthropy, which I’m sure if you haven’t heard already that the Laredo clinic is now closed. With that there will be a new clinic opening in Monterrey very soon. This doesn’t mean Alzafar won’t be transporting kids anymore. We will still be transporting emergencies, and other routine visits to our Texas Hospital for check ups. It is very important we still raise money for the transportation fund. Lastly, I may not make it to every unit, or club in the coming weeks. I want to ask you for your vote to continue my journey to High Priest & Prophet. So please attend next months December stated meeting. (Per Imperial I may write the above, not electioneering). Financially we are still hanging in there as market has been up and it has been down, but over the long haul we continue to do well with both our Restricted and Unrestricted funds. We also keep enjoying those “pennies from Heaven” from the monthly royalties. We continue to keep bringing in the much-needed money for the Hospital Transportation fund. Many thanks to our Assistant Rabban Rick Reyes III for a great job organizing and running the golf tournament. Also, a huge thanks to the Order of Quetzalcoatl for their generous donation to the HTF. This is the third time this year that the “Q” has stepped up to contribute to the HTF. Please remember that our Divan and Finance meetings are open to the Nobility. I urge you to come and see what YOUR Divan is doing and where we stand with YOUR money. This is YOUR Temple and YOUR future. David Olivares Treasurer of Alzafar Shriners Another month has passed us by, as we now welcome November. This is the month to get the family around the table to enjoy a nice homecooked Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings, watch football afterwards and go to bed early to enjoy those Black Friday deals. Please enjoy the start of the Holiday Season with your family and friends. We continue to have some great months with building rentals which is great for the treasury. Great job to Joy for continuing to bring in those rental dollars. We do have to remember that along with those rentals comes the maintenance and repair. As most of you know we have had some serious AC issues which we pray are all repaired now. These issues amount to quite a bit of unbudgeted dollars. In September we voted to increase the Repairs and Maintenance budget but depending on how we do the rest of the year we may need to dip into our Sub Bond account again to help cover our everyday expenses. I would like to also recognize and thank Maria for the great job she does with hospital transportation. She has been very instrumental in making sure our children are transported when needed as well as getting other Temples and foundations to help pay for the very expensive air transportation from Mexico to Galveston. Also, kudos to Lisa who did a great job with the Circus and continues to take on many of the day-to-day operational items that we have at the Temple. Please thank these ladies the next time you are in the office. We are lucky to have a great staff that keeps our temple running.

T-Bone Tommy Leverett Recorder to the Stars I know it is getting close to Christmas because the Store all have their Christmas decorations out. Wait a minute they start putting that stuff out in September. Being Recorder has kept me more than a little busy this past month. Alex Collado has left Alzafar after 13 years as our bookkeeper. With the exception of Alex and Maria I have hired all our employees. We have 10 full time employees and three that I call “As needed Employee”. The as needed employees help us with the Big Rentals and this helps us keep down overtime for our maintenance staff. Noble Andy Libby, a retire CFO,

worked with Alex her last 4-5 days getting to know how she handled the books and additional responsibilities. The goal was to have Andy in a position to help our new bookkeeper. If you know of a bookkeeper looking for a new job please let me know at 210-496-1625 or alzafarrecorder@gmail.com. I have started the process and David Olivares, Andy Libby and I will sort through the resumes and pick the top two which will be invited to visit with the Board of Directors. We also had another major leak in the main water line and we lost water in the building and we had no AC. Fortunately, we got both fixed this week just in time for an extremely busy rental weekend The Owner of the plumbing company said it would be extremely expensive to replace the main water line. I am guessing that that bid will come between $400,000-$500,000 and the building would be closed for over a month. More bad news, it looks like the roofing claim will not be covered and that is going to cost us about 1,300,000. On a positive the lady that rents the building has us on schedule to make over $600,000 in rental income this year and she already has booked over $500,000 for 2022. Please say “Thank you” to Joy Bonebrake for a fabulous job helping us keep the doors open to this old building. Camp owners, your Camp lease is currently $600, will again be due no later than March 1, 2022 and the Assessment will be due no later than June 1, 2022. I will keep you informed if the numbers stay the same or go up for 2022. Make plans to come out for the election of officers during our December meeting, the meeting is scheduled for December 9, 2021. All the above The answer is found in this article – so you need to keep reading. We enjoyed our semi-annual Sweethearts and Ladies Night dinner meeting with a nearly packed dining room at Mamacita’s. That was followed with the AMC Fall Car Show. Again, it was a well attended event. The Dessert Nights helped us by guiding participants to the parking area. Huge Kudos to AMC member George Garza for helping in getting them to participate! The Mini Wheels served burgers and other goodies to those who were in need of nourishment after burning hundreds of calories walking among all the cars. THANKS GUYS and your Ladies, too! It is really good when units and clubs join in together, so much more is accomplished and shared. Mo’s Kitchen was on hand to smoke giant turkey legs and other fixin’s. Watching the folks walk around eating those turkey legs caused me to flashback to The Flintstones era! Yabba Dabba DOO! There are still several up-coming events before this year is over. The Alzafar Shriners Masonic Picnic and the Children’s Halloween Party are quickly approaching. Following in November are two more parades on the schedule. So don’t put away those polishing rags yet. Headed into December we will have our annual Christmas Dinner Meeting with Sweethearts and Ladies present as well as Car Show Sponsors and other guests. We will be back at Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse for another evening of outstanding dining as well as the fellowship that makes it so worth while. So this winter when it gets chilly for you, you now have a back up method to keep comfy.

On the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 when the Greeter Unit meets. We had a few ladies join us last year and so far, this year there are three that would like to join us. We are always looking for great ladies to join our wonderful organization. We would also like members who have been with us for a few years to please come back and see all the wonderful changes that have been happening. The organization has come to the 21st century and more changes for the better to come. Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America Lady Ann Teague, High Priestess The month of October we had many ladies attend Mid States Unit Meet. They performed, laughed, and had a lot of fun. They also put in a bid for Mid Status Unit Meet for 2022. The dates will be Oct 20-22, 2022. Please make plans now to join us here in San Antonio next year. Our Mystery Theater fundraiser will be Nov 6th, in the Parlor. The theme is “Death in them Thar Hills”. I am sure everyone will have a great time. The Best Feed for the Brain To the Achbar, Growing up in the 1940s in a small town between Houston and Galveston, I became aware of the Freemasons because that’s what men were before their homes had telephones and televisions and they moved to the suburbs. They walked not more than a few blocks to a Lodge that was above the feed store. Later, when I was 12 years-old, my Boy Scout Troop also met above the feed store. Today, their Blue Lodges are still in the neighborhoods where no one lives anymore. The neighborhood Lodges are old and costly to keep, and the Masons that still attend Lodge must now drive great distances to those Lodges meetings. There’s a reason why the corner grocery store, and the stores that were once within walking distance, have disappeared from those neighborhoods. They have been replaced with “strings of major Box stores” in acres of parking lots surrounding Page 9

Malls and business complexes alongside major thoroughfares such as the RIM, Sonterra, the Vineyard and the Forum. It’s time for the Blue Lodges to abandon their old neighborhoods, and become a “Major Mall” facility or business complex beside a major thoroughfare. It’s time for Alzafar Shrine to become the “anchor store of a Freemasonry complex” surrounded by Blue Lodges, that locate together in the same manner of the large shopping Malls supplying the merchandising needs of people in a totally convenient city location. Since the 1950s, changes in work (from home), family structure, age, suburban life, women’s roles and a bounty of home entertainments have hastened the decline of social groups. Simply put, combining Freemasonry in a well known complex where all the attractions of Freemasonry are provided and obtained, is much more economical than in our inner city neighborhoods where no one lives anymore. I also believe a united Freemasonry in a large complex can’t help but restore what was once the well known social capitalizing membership of the Fraternal Order of Free and Accepted Masons, and might help attract more attention and membership than that of the Blue Lodges barely functioning’s in the oldest neighborhoods of San Antonio.

Alternatively, there are still “neighborhoods” in San Antonio where fraternities continue to thrive and the membership of those fraternities are young men desirous to belong. They are the college and university campuses. Another method for increasing AF&AM memberships; it seems to me that Blue Lodges would do well to meet “above the feed store” of those campuses. Dunk A Brewer! The Brews Brothers manned the dunk tank at the 1st anniversary party for Second Pitch brewery, where head brewers from eleven San Antonio breweries had their turn in the jump seat. As time permitted, members of the Brews Brothers took their turns as well. All profits from the dunk tank were generously donated (again) by Second Pitch to the Alzafar Transportation Fund. We are still adding up the numbers but it looks like the donated amount is just over $1000!

The 2021 Texas Days in Waco was a success! Queen Margie was accompanied by 30 Nekodah Members and the unit performances were entertaining. Cerveceros Fund Fest The Brews Brothers participated in the 1st annual Fund Fest, to support the San Antonio Cerveceros beer education organization. A huge success, gathering like-minded (and not so like-minded) people from all over Bexar county and beyond to enjoy the hospitality of the Alzafar Pavilion and spend the afternoon in peace and harmony. We were fortunate enough to enjoy the company of several members of the Divan, and even our Imperial Divan member and past Potentate. The Brews Brothers and the Cerveceros each thank Alzafar Shrine for their past and continued support! We couldn’t do it without you. There are rumors next year’s Fund Fest will be in conjunction with one of the car shows, attracting people to both events. Bigger and better! But that’s just a rumor. Stay tuned. Brews Brothers take over the Crocketters Tailgate Party September 4th the Brews Brothers took over the pre-game tailgate party for the San Antonio FC, serving Blond, Amber, Brown and Pale ales (and a few more) brewed exclusively for this grand occasion. Organized as a membership awareness event and opportunity to get the Alzafar presence out into the community, especially with circus on the horizon, a great time was had by all. September BB Stated Meeting at Dos Sirenos One of the advantages of getting to know the local brewery owners and managers is they tend to invite you in for a tour of their operations. September’s meeting was no exception, with Mike Sereno offering to show us how they do what they do and get a peak behind the scenes. Sure, it’s about the beer. But it’s also about the process, the science, the ingredients, and the terrific people you get to know during the journey. If you are into brewing simply for cheap beer, you might want to think about getting another hobby! Oh, and what is Mike thinking putting down an actual tiled floor in his brewery.
