We are pleasantly overwhelmed with the positive response from readers of our previous issues! We are excited that we have officially made it over the four year hump. Thank you so much for your support. We hope that you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed preparing it for you. Brenda Sealy, a Boerne native and owner of Hill Country Planning, the premier wedding and event planner in the Texas Hill Country, has over ten years experience and enjoys all aspects of the industry. Brenda has dreamed of planning special events since she was little. Now that she is doing what she loves, she has decided to expand her dreams into something larger. Crystal Wiedenfeld has always had a love for fashion and style, whether it is hair and makeup or clothes and design. After doing what she loved for over ten years she opened Simply Serene Salon and Spa in her hometown of Boerne, TX. She spent years telling anyone who would listen about her fashion tips and hair trends. As sisters they put their heads together to create a
magazine where they could both grow and continue their dreams. Hill Country Weddings & Events Magazine features everything from weddings to events, style, fashion and more. Nathan and Delaney met through a mutual friend on Nathan’s friend’s party barge (Lola) on Lake Austin. Delaney and her friends were running late (as usual) and had kept the boat and an annoyed group of partygoers waiting. Delaney was flustered and in need of a cold beverage asap. She had come prepared with a handle of Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka and Topo Chico but
to her dismay had forgotten a cup. Desperately searching the unknown vessel for a cup, Nathan took note of her distress and came to the rescue. He was her knight in shining swim trunks. Finding her a questionably clean cup, he washed it out with a water bottle and delivered the object of her desire. He proceeded to cater to Delaney on bended knee the rest of the day. After the boat ride,
she gave him her number, and the rest was history. On Saturday June 24th, 2017, after almost 4 years of dating, Nathan popped the question. Delaney thought Nathan was dropping her off for a girl’s night out with her sister and her work friends. The girls all feigned running late, so Nathan and Delaney stopped off at Wooldridge Park to kill some time. He
led her up to the gazebo, where Delaney’s parents were married, and got down continued on page 15

Macy Jo and I met our freshman year in college at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX. Some people say it doesn’t exist, but it truly was love at first sight. We ended up closing down Hard8 BBQ on our first date in November of 2011, just getting to know each other… although it already felt like I had known her my whole life. That night I knew I that I wanted to marry her. After almost 7 years, it was time for us to take the next step. I
knew I wanted to do something extra special for our engagement because Macy Jo deserves the world. Family is extremely important to us, so I knew I had to find a way to get both families in one location and considering our families were six hours apart it was a little tricky. So, I enlisted the help of my three older sisters who helped me plan what Macy thought was just a weekend getaway with my family to continued on page 8

her “coincidentally” favorite place, Gruene! Little did she know I had planned for her family to be in on the big day as well. After three long months of some seriously secretive planning with both of our families the weekend finally arrived. On a beautiful Saturday in March we headed out to Gruene for what Macy

down on one knee and asked the woman of my dreams the question I’ve been waiting my whole life to ask her. She was completely surprised and screamed YES!! So after almost 7 years together, with all our family, in our favorite little Texas town at the Dry Comal Creek Winery I got engaged to my best friend. We are now anxiously counting down the days until our wedding, which will be held in Dripping Springs, Texas this October.

ing some sort of cake at your wedding; however, it’s time to get more creative. Other options include a naked cake, cupcake cake, candy bar, dessert table, or even passed chocolates. Groom’s Cake Tradition has it that the
bride’s cake is a white vanilla cake and the groom’s is always chocolate, which provides options for guests. Groom’s cakes are typically much smaller than the wedding cake and are normally decorated to reflect his hobbies such as fishing, hunting, or a favorite sports team. WINTER 2018

• Make someone’s heart flutter by donating them to a nursing home or hospital.
• Bake up some thank-you treats for your bridesmaids and garnish them with your flowers.

As glitzy and whimsical as a winter wedding may sound, attempting to keep snug through the piercing cold doesn’t always look quite as glamorous. Here’s some ideas to help you master both style and comfort at your next frosty affair. Make a statement with extravagant gloves. Stiff, cold fingers are the worst. We love classic leather gloves with velvet or satin linings. Plus, when your hands are warm, everything else feels warm. Invest in a dashing, structured coat. These are timeless, so splurging on an expensive one is justified! The right coat can be worn with anything and you will certainly get your wear out of it.

Go all out with fur accessories and cover-ups. Shawls and scarves and headpieces - oh my! Borrow from the boys. A sharp trouser suit offers more warmth than any dress. Just be sure it’s tailored and crisp so that it maintains that look of elegance. Choose the right fabrics. Shop around for dresses with thicker materials and textures like velvet or suede to prevent the chills. And don’t forget about tights to add that extra spark of class and a bit of insulation.

on one knee. Nathan’s sister, Elizabeth, was hiding nearby to catch everything on camera. Nathan then took a blindfolded Delaney to Lake Austin where their families were waiting on the Lola party barge, the place of their first meeting, to celebrate. They decided to get married in one of the Hill Country’s most adorable towns, Comfort, Texas. They fell in love with the Ingenhuett on High, located just across the street from Delaney’s family’s longtime favorite lunch spot - High’s. The venue was originally a general store built in 1867. The antique architecture, original masonry, and modern industrial updates were exactly what the couple had in mind. The courtyard with its koi pond was used for cocktails and mingling, the charming back lawn with an adorable vine covered tin shed was used for the ceremony, and the stunning interior reception hall for dinner and dancing. The wedding day of March 3, 2018 brought lots of good luck rain along with it. While this wasn’t ideal for the back lawn ceremony, the couple’s genius photographer, Allison Jeffers, came prepared with charming umbrellas, a calming influence, and lots of rainy day photo ideas. Their favorite photo being the stunning nighttime shot on the cover. They look back now and wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Curating linens for your event is a lot of fun, especially when you have a knack for color pallets and textures. Linen choice is also one of the easiest ways to personalize the aesthetics of your venue. From basic poly, satin and pin tucks to crushed, taffeta and embroidered, narrowing down your decision can be very overwhelming. I always recommend keeping it simple so the final look reflects the spirit of your event. I currently love satin nap-

kins because of the element of elegance they offer. The beautiful sheen of satin is the essence of any fairytale look. If satin isn’t your thing, consider the crinkle look, which adds a touch of formal fashion. Mixing it with taffeta will bring a unique texture to your presentation and never fails to add a sense of sophistication. Still a bit stuck? You can’t go wrong with polyester. Polyester is particularly durable and goes well with any event or table setting.

Take precaution if you decide on rosette linens. Although gorgeous, rosette linens can interfere with the stability of glasses and centerpieces. If you are dying to incorporate some rosette into your decorations, consider limiting them to the cake, gift or sign-in tables.
Fashion gurus always preach dressing for your body type. The same rule applies to your linens! If they aren’t tailored correctly, they’re not going to look right. The following chart will help you determine the length of your linens so they fall to the floor in the right manner:

cont’d from page 16 gan were pretty much in constant contact and she decided to go visit Paulo for Spring Break...she went to visit and never left. It was love at first sight!
The proposal: Paulo and Megan have a hunt test Labrador Retriever named Tazz. Majority of the year Tazz is out in Montgomery, Texas with the trainers getting ready for his next attempt at a title. They decided to bring Tazz home for Christmas and unbeknownst to Megan, Paulo had big plans for Tazz while he was home. Tuesday December 6 started out like any other day, busy work days for both Paulo and Megan. When Paulo got home from work that night he mentioned that he wanted to go out to the field with Tazz to practice his latest achievement, the triple retrieve with a blind. At first Megan was going to stay home but Paulo was very convincing in the fact that she should go with him. They found an empty field by the house and Paulo got to work sending Tazz for his retrieves. It had been a while since Megan trained with Tazz so Paulo decided that she needed to practice with him. Paulo went to hide the blind bumper down the field (sneakily hiding the ring). Megan sent Tazz for the first 2 retrieves with no issues... now when it came down to the blind retrieve she just could not get Tazz to listen or cooperate. Very frustrated, she continued to try and try and try until he FINALLY listened and went to the bumper. As he proudly came running back, Megan noticed something attached to the bumper...’What is that on the bumper...it’s something black...’ When Tazz returned with the bumper he placed it in Paulo’s hand where he then removed the black box and got down on one knee. WARNING FROM YOUR PLANNER
S
So, you have a friend or family member who has recently had a wedding or been in a wedding? And now they have graciously offered to be your planner for the big day? How sweet!
Yes – it is sweet of them to offer, but maybe you should consider hiring a professional instead. There are so many friends or family members who feel as if they are doing a great job and who are truly trying to help….but BUYER BEWARE! Just because they had a wedding or were in a couple doesn’t mean they know how to manage your own special wedding day. Here’s a few stories about what can happen when friends and family become wedding planners!
after finishing up the pictures of the couple and needed just 5 more minutes to finish some special shots before the guests entered. And then, it was too late. Because the guests were allowed to enter the cocktail area early, the bride will not ever have photos of her reception area. Another friend/family member thought they had the perfect person for their own hair and makeup but that they should use the salon recommended by the professional planner for
Guests were waiting outside for cocktail hour and getting anxious to come inside. The friend/family member decided help out and to let them all in. OOOPS! What she didn’t know was that the photographer was on the way

the bridal party. The bridal party looked fabulous! The bride and family member, however, had problems! The highlighter used on the bride was way too generous and in the wrong area. When it came time for photos the photographer couldn’t get the shine to go away. The friend/makeup artist wasn’t using professional products nor did she know how to do the makeup correctly for the wedding photos. And here’s another example! The professional wedding
planner reviewed the layout after 50 guests were added at the last minute and discussed options to have the dance floor outside to allow for more room. The bride decided not to go with the professional’s suggestion. In the middle of the actual reception, the friend/family member asked guests to move and had friends move tables. This did result in a bigger dance floor, but there were 60 people on the porch who had no place to sit or put a drink down. Professional wedding planners probably have hundreds of stories just like this, when well-meaning friends and family try to help manage a wedding or reception and chaos results! CHANGE YOUR NAME Changing your name after the wedding is no simple task and requirements vary from state to state, so research before you start the process. Don’t forget to update your bank accounts, credit cards, utility accounts, rental agreements, and insurance policies as well.

What sort of style did you envision for your wedding day? Classic wedding with simple white & green flowers. Traditional reception layout with round tables. No actual theme, just simple and modest. What was your favorite moment from the day? Standing at the church listening to the priest announce us husband and wife. If you could do it all over again, what would you change? I would have less people in the bridal party. Any tips that you can give to future brides? Always choose things that YOU like. It is your style, not anyone else’s. Only you will look back at the photos and appreciate it. Keep your wedding within your budget. Just remember it is only one day!

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and the same goes for your wedding guests! The menu is one of the most important aspects of your wedding. Here are some questions to help you choose the right caterer. What is included in your plate price? Many caterers do not include travel, service charge, setup delivery or even possibly plates in the per person price advertised. These extra fees add up very quickly. The best way to find out the bottom line is to have them send you an invoice that shows all the fees involved so that you can actually determine what the per person price really is. Another fee that may be added on to the total bill is gratuity so check with your catering company to find out what a reasonable gratuity may be.

When will you set up? Nothing is worse than having your caterer banging and disrupting your ceremony. If your ceremony is near the reception site, this is important to discuss in advance. You do not want catering setting up as guests are watching you be announced or walking down the aisle. How long will you serve? Most caterers have a set amount of time that they will be serving your guests. This may be determined by the number of guests you have at your event. There may be an extra fee for all-night service. Some catering companies come in, serve and leave and others may have a threehour time frame for guests to enjoy and not feel rushed. Always check serving times with the catering company.

Do you clean up or bus tables? Depending on your venue, this can be very important. You want to know how much of the clean up the caterer has included in their price. If they are not cleaning up, who is? Make sure you are hiring a full service catering company and not one who serves food and leaves you and your guests to clean up the mess. What happens to the leftover food? If you have fewer guests than you planned, you may have food leftover. Some caterers take the food with them and others package it for you. Check with your caterer to make sure you are left what you paid for at the end of the night. This makes for a great meal the following day for the out of town guests or extras you may have over.
What deposit do you require and what is your cancellation policy? The amount needed for a deposit varies widely from one caterer to another. Knowing what you are required to pay to save your date will help with budgeting. Cancellation policies also vary from different companies.

When preparing for your wedding day hair trial, the most important tip is to create a mood board of photos. This is the best way to describe your vision. It helps both you and your stylist understand your dream and bring it to life. By sharing photos, your stylist should be able to tell you upfront whether or not the style is feasible for his or her skills. And ladies, please be realistic! If your hair is short or fine, achieving long or big curls is going to be an obstacle. In this situation, we recommend exploring extensions for length and volume. What makes DJ’s different from each other? Some DJ’s do this as a full-time business others are parttime. Each have our their personalities and methods of conducting business, communicating, reacting and responding. They have various levels of experience and the focus or preference for events contracted many differ, as well as the preferred location and expected environment. Some like weddings and some do not. This is good to know. Additionally, the tools used are important and must be able to handle the job. Some DJ’s use computers while others prefer turntables. It is essential to have professional gear. It can separate the presentation of appearance, music, sound quality, and the result. A professional will share their pride and talk about the benefits they can offer to you and for you on your wedding day. Can they share their experience? Ask about their length of time in the industry and length of time in business. How long have they been a DJ? Is this a business or hobby? Are they a wedding DJ? How many weddings have they done? How many ceremonies have they done? Listen to how they discuss their business, and to how they connect with their customers. Their experience and relationships with clients and vendors will be noticeable. continued on page 43

Some DJ’s work only on Saturdays and some may schedule events throughout a weekend. The work done varies with the needs of the clients. They each have a passion for what they do. Ask about their passion and how often they use it. Do they act as the emcee and make announcements? Making announcements during the reception is part of the wedding DJ’s role. Most wedding DJ’s can assist with the timeline and make necessary announcements as needed. You may not want a DJ who talks all the time, but has the skill to do so when needed and is comfortable. This should be evident when they talk about experience and the role they play and have played in past receptions. Do they have a contract? A contract is a written agreement between you and the DJ. All professional services will have a contract with all the specifics stated! Be sure to confirm all services needed and legalities. The contract highlights the expectations and requirements for the services promised. Some of the things to look for on the contract are the start and end times for the ceremony and reception or just the reception if that is the only service required. Confirm options and cost if you would like to extend service. A contract should be easy to read. Be aware of every point and ask for clarity for terminology that is not clear. What is the deposit required to secure your date? A deposit secures your date. Ask about the amount needed to secure your date. The deposit is generally
applied to your package and services promised. Some companies and individuals may differ with this process and the application of the deposit may or may not be refundable. The topic of cancellation should be stated on the contract. What happens if they cannot make it to the wedding (…an emergency occurs)? This should be stated in your contract. Most professional companies and DJ’s have a backup plan in place. Clarify what would be the process if this situation were to occur. Many DJ’s network with other DJ’s so even solo operators have this contingency in place. Are they insured? Some venues require the DJ to be insured. Some venues require a particular amount of liability. Ask if they carry insurance and how much of this is needed by your venue. Can they meet one more time before the wedding? Again, companies and policies vary. Most professional companies will schedule time to meet with you in person, over the phone or video. It is a good plan to schedule time in advance and not wait until the last moment. Many DJ’s like to plan and research music and organize a playlist especially if the music is not mainstream. What type of equipment do they use? The equipment should be professional grade quality, not a home stereo system. They all use tools to get the task at hand done. Just like buying a car, there are grades or levels to the equipment used in the DJ industry. Some prefer highend equipment and some prefer equipment that is more affordable. Comfort and confidence with the equipment is important. Feel free to ask about what we use and what it looks like especially if it is going to be front and center on your wedding day. Where do they get their music? Technology is at our fingertips and access to music from services like iTunes and others is a click away. Some DJ’s use vinyl, some use CD’s and some use music files. Ask this question to get clarity if it is important. When do they set up? The set up time can vary due to the package and services requested. Generally, most professionals can account for the time needed to set up the necessary equipment. DJ should set up, do a sound check and change well before your guests arrive. Share the expected attire of your guest and request specific attire if desired for your DJ. Do they take breaks? Do they drink or smoke? A DJ needs to be available in case a change occurs in the timeline. General breaks, drinking and smoking policies vary by company. Ask about breaks and these other issues if important to you.

Do you set up a sign or banner on their booth or speakers? This is your wedding reception, not a bar or backyard party. Banners advertising their business may not be appropriate. Perspectives vary on this issue and some may just do this and not ask. Clarify this issue if it is a concern.
Wedding professionals can make your wedding special by increasing the quality and bettering the experience provided by the venue, the florist, the caterer, and the baker. Brides overlook the importance of a professional wedding DJ and too often settle for less. Cutting cost or corners can lead to undesired results. After marriage comes the joy of buying a first time home or selling two homes and picking one for your new family to set up house in. It can be nerve-wracking and thrilling all at the same time. These three tips may help to make that process a little easier.

#2 See what you qualify for You need to find out what you can afford and what size mortgage you can obtain. You can calculate your debt-to-income ratio and do a preapproval with a bank so you know what might fit in your budget, so you are shopping for the right size house or
mortgage. Don’t forget to factor in property taxes and homeowner’s insurance into your budget. #3 How much can you put down You need money in savings not only for your down payment but for your connection fees for water, electric, phone and more. Don’t forget to budget for moving expenses or new furniture or small items to help make your new house a home. This is a brief overview that can help put you on the path to finding your new home but always remember to educate yourself beforehand so that it’s less stressful and pick a good realtor to make the process easier for you. Also try to avoid trying to go through this process while still planning the wedding. Weddings are stressful enough you don’t need to be worrying about buying a house, fixing credit errors and moving on top of it all. Casually through mutual friends, 8 years ago, and we spoke on the phone only for the first year before he surprised me with flowers at my doorstep one Valentine’s Day. It was after that, that we went on our first date. How did he propose? Never one for a big show, he proposed to me privately in his home one sunny Sunday before we headed out to a friend’s engagement party! It was a massive surprise and my sister and brother-in-law were just outside waiting as it happened. I was absolutely taken by surprise because even though we designed the ring together years earlier, I had no idea that he had gone ahead and had it made. Hawaiian Islands – a honeymoon paradise Grab your sunscreen and pack your bags, it’s time to have some fun in the sun. We are making our winter honeymoon choice a US location with safety and security in paradise as our goal this season. The Hawaiian Islands offer so many things
to see and do - from all the romance your little heart can handle to sightseeing, volcanoes, zip-lining, and snorkeling - the list goes on and on. Trust me, you will not get bored. With so many travel options, you can buy packages from all the major hotels/resorts or stay at a St. Regis, or even find a quiet little getaway on one of the smaller islands, whatever your preference. A Hawaiian
honeymoon will truly start building the adventures and memories of your newly married life together. There are several islands that host resorts and the activities vary by the island so look around and see what the different locations have to offer. Also, remember that the Islands were all formed by volcanoes, so mountains are all around and on some
of the islands, the volcanoes are great sights to see and some are still quite active. The weather will be perfect, even in the winter as the Islands still get warm ocean breezes and balmy temperatures. It may not be the closest choice, however for safe and easy travels this winter it may just be the peaceful break you have been romanticizing about.

The story began in 1965 when my grandfather, Pasquale aka Pat, moved down to San Antonio from Connecticut. He was attending graduate school, as was my grandmother Judy, and they both met on just his second day of living in SA. The two were attending an educational conference that summer that prepares young adults in the community.
The two didn’t initially hit it off, Judy says she thought Pat was young and arrogant at 25 years old. They found out that they would both be working closely together for the next two years seeing as they were placed on the same committee through the archdiocese of SA. The two were even appointed Vice President and president of the committee. After being elected together, Pat told Judy “we are going to be working so closely together we might have to get married!” After many coffee meetings and two years of working together, their friendship grew as they found more in common with each other and a greater respect. Pat would ask Judy to marry him three times before she finally said yes on July 3rd 1968. They married on April 12, 1969 in SA at Our Lady of Grace, with a small recep-

tion at the Menger hotel downtown. They had a nice getaway to New Orleans for a honeymoon before returning to SA to begin life. On March 22, 1970, theywelcomed their first child, Sarah(my mother). They would go on to adopt two more children. A girl (Amy) in 1973, and a boy (Mark) in 1975. They moved to the house they still remain at in 1985. They started their relationship working together and haven’t stopped since. Pat serves as the executive director with the office of youth ministry at the archdiocese of SA, while Judy worked at CPS training case workers who helped families. She later went on to also work for the archdiocese, but as support in addressing clergy sexual abuse issues. The two eventually would remain at the archdiocese together via cemeteries, in designing educational materials for grief counseling and making final preparations after death. Both retired in 2008.
