US281 Construction & Tree Relocations Due to US281 improvements, TXDOT will be narrowing the last median on Stone Oak Parkway, at U281. This means the Stone Oak monument on the median will be removed, and the landscaping on the median greatly affected. As part of the POA’s ongoing conservation efforts, to assist with the preservation of the tree canopy, the POA ensured as many trees as possible would be saved. The last week of May, five trees were moved to a nearby median. Thank you to the Stone Oak POA Board of Directors, the Stone Oak POA Aesthetics Committee, Certified Arborist Todd Miller, Scott Lambaria and his team at Oak Island Gardens, and the Stone Oak POA Maintenance Team for their efforts in making these relocations a success! The POA would also like to thank Pete Garza of VRXGlobal, and TXDOT, for working with the POA regarding the tree relocations, and adjusting their construction schedules accordingly to accommodate the relocation timeline.

A note from your Stone Oak SAPD SAFFE Officers: One of the most frequent complaints received is in regards to panhandlers along 1604 at various intersections. The Northside unit was able to make this a priority at the end of last year, and utilizing a criminal trespass affidavit signed by TXDOT, was able to make some arrests. However, even if arrested, many have made it clear that as long as they are receiving money from people passing by, they will continue the behavior as it is “worth getting arrested over.” This is where we need help from the community. If you see a panhandler asking for money at an intersection, and you feel compelled to help, consider keeping water, snacks, toiletries, blankets during cold weather, or similar products in your car, and hand them out instead of giving money. Unfortunately, in the large majority of these instances, you are enabling an addiction when you hand money over to a panhandler. To stop the behavior, we must change ours. Our hearts mean well when we give to someone less fortunate, and we can continue to do so through many reputable, charitable organizations, but providing cash through a car window unfortunately is not always serving your intended purpose.

TGR News Joe Silman, the incumbent representative of TGR District 4, was elected during the May election for a four year term expiring in 2022. District 4 includes the area generally within the boundaries of Loop 1604, US Highway 281, Wilderness Oak and NW Military Highway. TGR was created by the Texas Legislature in 2001 and confirmed by voters in late 2002. The mission of TGR is to provide management, conservation, preservation, protection and recharge of the Trinity Aquifer in northern Bexar County. To accomplish this mission TGR conducts research, provides educational opportunities, permits wells and monitors the hydrogeology of the Aquifer. Open meetings are conducted on the second Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the Concordia Lutheran Church. Every year in the U.S., 465,000 children are reported missing. National Missing Children’s Day, which is May 25, was created to encourage parents, guardians, caregivers, and others concerned with the well-being of children to make child safety a priority. To commemorate this day, we wanted to share the following safety tips with you: • Teach children their contact information. Make sure your child knows his or her full name, home address and telephone number. Include this contact information in their backpack, coat, etc. Teach your child not to share this information with anyone he or she does not know without your permission. • Practice safe social media. Talk to your children about the risks of sharing too much information on social media. Explain how “checking in” on social networks and sharing location information or routines can have negative consequences. • Listen and ask questions. Listen if your child says someone makes him or her feel uncomfortable. Ask questions to better understand why. It is important for children to learn to trust their instincts. • Use (social media and) Nextdoor’s urgent alert tool if your child goes missing or wanders away. After contacting authorities, use Nextdoor (and other social media) to alert your neighbors. The first few hours after a child goes missing are the most critical. Since there’s typically a window of time before emergency responders can arrive, alerting your neighbors can be an essential step.

San Antonio Moves Into Stage 2 Watering Rules San Antonio has been under Stage 1 drought restrictions for less than a month, but dry, hot conditions have caused the Edwards Aquifer 10-day average to drop to 650 feet, requiring Stage 2 water restrictions. Per city ordinance, City Manager Sheryl Sculley in consultation with Robert R. Puente, President/CEO of San Antonio Water System (SAWS), declared Stage 2 management rules are in effect as of Tuesday, June 12. Stage 2 of the city’s drought plan is triggered when the 10-day average of the Edwards Aquifer at the J-17 monitoring well drops to 650 feet or below. According to the city’s Aquifer Management Plan ordinance, coming out of drought stages can be considered 15 days after the aquifer is above the trigger. Puente notes that the watering restrictions are not suggestions – they are municipal laws that will be enforced. “During drought, SAWS focuses on education. Now that we have been in restrictions for three weeks, our customers have had the opportunity to get accustomed to drought rules once again,” he said. “Contracted police officers are patrolling and they can issue citations if they witness violations.” Watering days stay the same in Stage 2 as in Stage 1, however the hours during which watering is allowed are shortened. Watering with a sprinkler, irrigation system or soaker hose is allowed only between 7-11 a.m. and 7-11 p.m. on your designated day. Watering with a hand-held hose is still allowed any time on any day. Watering days are determined by the last number of your address: 0 or 1 – Monday 2 or 3 – Tuesday 4 or 5 – Wednesday 6 or 7 – Thursday 8 or 9 – Friday No watering on the weekends If you observe water waste, the best way to report it is online at saws. org/WaterWaste. REAGAN RATTLER CHEER CAMP 2018 Get ready to get to CHEER! We are inviting kids going into K-8th grades to join the Reagan Rattler cheerleaders in a spirited Cheer Camp this summer. Join us July 16-18 from 9am-2pm at Reagan High School with a special show-off Pep Rally performance on the last day. Participants will learn sideline cheers/chants, band dance, jumps, and practice tumbling skills during three fun-filled days. Campers will have a daily personal craft to take home and will receive a memory photo with the Reagan Cheerleaders. New NEISD School Security In an ongoing effort to ensure school safety measures, on Monday, June 4th, NEISD announced safety improvements that will be implemented beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. These include the following: • ALL High School and Middle School students in NEISD will be required to only utilize clear backpacks. Band and athletic bags will still be permitted, as well as purses and lunch bags. (Elementary students may carry traditional backpacks.) • All exterior doors will be locked at every NEISD campus during school hours, and visitors will have to be “buzzed” in. NEISD also noted staff will have continued safety training, to include active shooter training. In addition, counselors will also receive annual mental health training to better support students. The hiring of additional police officer support is underway, and guidelines for random searches are currently being established. These changes are being made as a commitment to the safety of all NEISD students, staff, and volunteers.

North East ISD Athletic Department Virgil T. Blossom Athletic Center To the Patrons, Families, and Friends of North East Two years ago, NEISD made the decision to add additional gate security measures at our athletic venues. These measures included walk-through metal detectors, metal “wanding”, and additional personnel to inspect bags and other items. The overriding purpose was to improve our security, but with that increase in security measures, there was also the hope that we would give our customers confidence that they could safely enjoy our sport and athlete events. By all accounts and measures, the added security has been a resounding success. It is with my heartfelt gratitude to the NEISD community for the patience and understanding that was shown as this new policy was implemented. It was successful solely because you, our community, allowed it to be. Moving forward, our goal is to align our policies with larger athletic venues in our city as well as the state and nation. Clear bag policies are now standard at almost any athletic venue, and it will be standard at ALL NEISD athletic venues beginning fall of 2018. Our policy will be posted on our district website, email blasted to all parents in the district, and provided on signage at all our venues. This new policy will streamline our security measures and allow us to serve our customers even better by maintaining a high level of security and increasing the speed of entry into the contest. I am excited about this next step in our security and believe it will be a huge success. Again, I want to personally thank our NEISD community for their patience and support. NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
