about you and you care about everyone in it. We enter events together, which may be overnight 12 hour ruck in the woods, or simply signing up for 100 days challenges to make us skip a grade, evolve us into stronger individuals and make us even more hot looking. We support one another, here at home or oceans away. From caring gestures when, for example, one of ours has a baby on the way... To sending care packages to deployed troops that keep us free and safe here at home. It makes going to the “gym” more like going to see “your family” It makes being consistent with your trianing, or waking up at 4:30 am to train much easier. And because if that I don’t consider myself just a trainer. I want to and love to share my experiences of life, pass on what I’ve been taught either by life or the thanks to the countless amazing people in my life, especially all the Cadre of GORUCK.
Introduce Yourself.... I was born and raised in the Czech Republic. In the industry for 13 years. Certified group fitness, personal trainer and Pre/Post natal exercise spefialist with over 35 pregnancies under my care. GORUCK training partner. Tell us about your Phalanx Community... Phalanx is 50% training facility 50% community. Although this happened organically, I believe combining these two creates a perfect conditions for consistency and never ending evolution. You become a part of a family that cares
What’s your #1 fitness strategy for someone looking to get into shape? If you look at a gym as a vehicle to get you where you want to be.... You can go on foot, you can take a bike to get there faster, or even better, get in a Ferrari. Well, Phalanx is a Ferrari with state of the art safety features. Conditioning/training is to strengthen and enhance our bodies, safety of the training while maintaining highest effectivness and intensity is something I take great pride in.

Meet Your
NEIGHBORS!
the
Peel family
Introduce us to the family‌
R
enee, my husband Chris, kids Chloe (6) and Cameron (3). Chris and I have been married for 12 years and both grew up and met in New Jersey. We met in 2003 when we were both working at Champion Mortgage company. Chris was a loan officer and I was working in Human Resources straight out of college. We were introduced by a mutual friend and hit it off immediately! We got married in 2005 and after living in Denville NJ for one short year, we moved to Hoboken and have been here ever since. We have both made career changes, and built a family and strong roots in Hoboken! Chris is the Publisher of Men’s Health magazine, and I am a Personal Trainer for Crunch Gym. Chloe is attending 1st grade at Mustardseed School and Cameron is in Pre-K 3 at Mile Square Early Learning, both in Hoboken.
Health and Fitness is a huge part of who we are as individuals and as a family! We obviously enjoy our traditional training at Crunch 5-6 times per week, but also stay active as a family through sports and other activities. We spend as much time as we can skiing and snowboarding in the winter and have gotten both kids on skis now! In the summers we go to the Jersey Shore and love boating and doing watersports, especially wakeboarding! My move to the fitness industry came in 2014 when I was pregnant with my son. I was training with a trainer (and my mentor) at Crunch and loving it so much. I was working in the city in the Fashion industry at the time and just needed a change! I loved training and especially functional training. I was eager for more knowledge of exercise and wellness and just always wanted to be at the gym! I decided to take

it a step farther so I started to read, watch videos, listen to podcasts and just learn as much as I could. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I was pregnant and becoming spin certified, Pre/Post Natal certified, and obviously also got my National Strength and Conditioning Certification. At this point, I was not sure if I was going to make the move, Cameron was born and I was busy just being a mom! When my maternity leave came to an end, I decided that I would be going to work at Crunch instead. I have been a trainer at Crunch for a little over 3 years now, and could not be happier. I specialize in Functional Training with a major emphasis on Kettlebell Training. I have found this type of training to be the most safe and effective for all different types of individuals. My training philosophy is to start very simple and build a solid foundation of movement. From there, we can add or subtract where needed to reach desired goals and start having fun! Follow my Instagram for a little taste of what I do: Peelfit or come find me at Crunch! When did you move to Hoboken? In 2006 we moved into the Hudson Tea building. How have you seen the community/ neighborhood change? It is hard to say. When we first moved here we had no kids, and both worked a lot. We commuted in and out of Hoboken daily and didn’t really know all that many people. We went out in the city on weekends too and sort of just
{14}
enjoyed our freedom! We used to say, that we had no friends here because we didn’t have kids or dogs! So, it sort of just feels like we started to see more of the community as we grew our family. We made lots of friends who moved to the suburbs, but it seems like families are not moving out as much as they used to. There are still tons of kids as strollers everywhere but there seems to be more teens too! I would say the biggest visual change would be uptown where all the new condos have gone up and the waterfront has been majorly developed by the Maxwell Building. What is your favorite neighborhood walk? Hands down along the water from Pier A to the new water island park (not sure what that is called). This is a great walk for the kids too! You get away from all the cars and lights, and can enjoy some free space to run and play. Not to mention, there is no better view of Manhattan! It seriously never gets old! Tell us about your favorite neighborhood activities. I would say the Summer Movie series. It is definitely the coolest and most exciting activity! Watching Movies on the pier with the view in the backdrop is hard to beat. I would also have to go with all the festivals that are held every year Next would be visiting the parks almost daily! There are so many to pick from and such a great way for the kids to get out their energy. It is truly an amazing place to live and I hope to stay here with our kids for a long time!

the
Levine family
H
i, I’m Sue Roderick and I’ve been living in Hoboken since 1994. Shortly after moving here from Jersey City I met my husband to be, Adam Levine(not THAT Adam Levine), and we are proud that our family of four has outlasted many of our friends, and that we continue to live in this wonderful city we call home. When we were having our first child, we always figured we’d be moving to some idyllic town with spacious homes, front porches, parking and all the other conveniences. But after our daughter Daisy was born, we realized that Hoboken made even MORE sense when starting a family. I remember when buying our home across from Wallace School thinking “like we’d ever send our kids there”. But sure enough both Daisy, and our son Ace not only attended Wallace School, but thrived there beyond anything we could’ve imagined. We love everything Hoboken has to offer. From it’s small size (nothing is ever TOO far), easy NYC commutes, interesting people, great food, and a culture and energy that cannot be matched anywhere else on this side
of the Hudson. Not only do we live in Hoboken, but my husband and I work here as well. I am the manager at Work It Out Studios, and also sell nutritional cleansing products(follow me on FB to learn more!) Adam runs his own marketing and design business (adameus.com) near the PATH, which couldn’t be more convenient as he works for a variety of local businesses as well as those in NYC. Meanwhile, Ace takes comic book drawing classes at Urban Arts and just wrapped up his second flag football season. Daisy is heavily involved with the theater program at Hoboken Middle School. As for our favorite things to eat in town there are just too many to name. Italian heroes at M&P Biancamano, Cubanos and cafe con leche at Zafra, pork chops at Augustino’s, pizza at Dozzino, and our kids love The ‘Bu (The Malibu Diner for those in the know). Sure there are compromises, and space is limited, but we feel this just makes us closer as a family. Yes, our out-of-town guests complain about the parking, but they love coming here nearly as much as we enjoy living here.

the
Henderson family M
y name is Caroline Henderson and I am a single mom to William, 8, Emma 7, and owner, baker and artist behind For Cup Sakes and Little Prints William. I moved to Hoboken in June 2015. This isn’t the first time we’ve been residents of the mile square city. In 2012 we spent a very brief nine months here and instantly fell in love with everything Hoboken had to offer. After a move to London and a longer expat assignment in South Africa we decided in June 2015 to move back to the US and there was no hesitation where we would end up living. I grew up in South Africa just outside the coastal town of Durban in a very small city and for years (after countless repeat episodes of Friends and Sex in the City) dreamt of moving and living in New York City. I moved to London just after University and met my (then) husband. After seven years in the UK we spent four amazing years living the expat dream life in Singapore before moving to New York in 2012 (just before Hurricane Sandy). We arrived in Singapore with two suitcases and left four years later with a 35 foot truck and two kids in tow. After five international moves my kids and I agree that Hoboken is home and we hope to stay for the foreseeable future. What made you move to (and then return to) Hoboken? Apart from wanting to be close to the city but not in the city, the convenience of
{16}
Hoboken was so appealing. I wasn’t used to living somewhere where you could walk to everything. In our first stint in 2012 I met so many amazing moms/ friends that I never felt more at home away from home and after arriving back in 2015 thinking it probably wouldn’t happen again I met another group of amazing woman -most of whom I consider family. Sadly being such a transient town friends come and go but I think that almost makes Hoboken special. There is such a great sense of community and I have made friends in Kings, in Elysian playground and one of my good friends I met walking down Washington Street. (I’m that open weird person that will try chat you up in the park) Tell me a bit about your life in Hoboken? I run my own online bakery called For Cup Sakes and an online arts business called Little Prints William. I also work full time in HR/ Events in the city and do anything I can to help local philanthropic causes as well as charities in Africa. (Give Your Day). When I’m not baking, painting, playing or teaching the piano (Dino occasionally lets me), I’m running my son to sports practices, watching him play basketball or football and trying to hang out as much as I can with friends (and date). Where are you favorite spots in Hoboken? I love Anthony Davids for brunch/ bubbly lunch, Bin 14, Madison’s for the occasional crowd, City Bistro rooftop, Urban coalhouse Pizza, Dino’s for the steak, wine and live music.

#WINTER FITNESS // HUDSON RIVER CHIRO
HUDSON RIVER CHIRO Pre/Postnatal Reformer Pilates At Hudson Family Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, we not only offer reformer pilates to combat low back pain, but we are now offering pre- and post-natal reformer pilates taught by a doctor of physical therapy. These specialized programs have been shown to have many benefits to both mothers and children, especially women that have had c-sections. During pregnancy, the core muscles weaken due to the lengthening of the musculature to accommodate for the growth of the baby. If strength isn’t recovered after the birthing process, this can predispose women to low back pain and many other problems. When the core musculature is cut into during a c-section, there becomes a higher
Mommy savant likelihood that the woman may have low back pain later in life if the strength isn’t recovered. Although it is ideal to begin therapy as soon as the woman is cleared by her physician, the benefits of reformer pilates can be achieved at any stage post-natally. The research behind reformer pilates has proven to be effective in reducing back pain and pelvic pain caused by weakness, overstretched ligaments, and instability therefore it can also assist in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders and urinary incontinence. Research has shown that mothers that perform reformer pilates pre- and post-natally have significantly better outcomes than those that do not. These classes are private or semi private and taught by a doctor of physical therapy.

#WINTER FITNESS // GOROW

GOROW About GoRow The GoRow workout is 75% rowing, 20% weight-training and 5% stretching. The purpose is to make you a stronger more efficient Rower. The classes are very low impact and easy on your joints and can burn over 1000 calories per session! Any fitness level is welcome and no prior training is necessary. Perfect for pre/postnatal women too! Each class is limited to only nine people allowing the class plenty of individual attention. One-onone private sessions are also available upon request. The GoRow Workout Exercise Physiologist Garrett Roberts has created the GoRow Workout: a distinctive combination of collegiate circuit rowing and full body fat burning exercises. One of the biggest problems that people run into when exercising is repeating the same workout over and over again. When this happens your body gets used to the workout
and it stops making progress. Your body figures out a way to complete the workout using the least amount of energy. This causes your body to plateau and in turn you see less results. At GoRow, we developed a workout to give you the ultimate fitness alternative. The GoRow Studio The studio is a spacious 1,000 square foot loft with gorgeous panoramic views of Hoboken, the Empire State Building and the Manhattan skyline. The GoRow studio blends calming blues, hardwood floors, and sleek industrial touches to give you the perfect workout environment. Signup for a class today for the GoRow experience.
