Friday, February 19, 2016, was a day full of anxiety for me and my team as I was about to do one of the biggest photo shoot in Gospel Music History. What was supposed to be just a few artists, ended up being 45 of today s biggest gospel artists and many rising stars all in one room on a beautiful Friday morning in sunny Las Vegas. To top it all off, we also had a camera crew there interviewing some of the artists for a documentary that we have been working on for quite some time. To see artists like Tasha Cobbs, Briana Babineaux, Myron Butler, Brian Courtney Wilson, Alexis Spight, Travis Greene and so many more in one room all getting along was a sight to behold! The great thing was that everyone left their egos at the door. Everyone got along, laughed, talked and waited their turn. At one point I got so emotional because all I could think about was when I worked at an

advertising agency in New York City and the concept of Root Magazine was birthed. When I was creating the template, I would dream of one day doing my very own photo shoot was one hot artist. Now almost a decade later, I managed to get Grammyp, Stellar and Dove Award winning artists together to make history! The Leaders of the New School issue was a concept I came up with talking to my friend and publicist to the stars, Jojo Pada lol. She said, Son, you have you seen the latest XXL cover with all of the new artists on there ? The funny thing is, I had the XXL issue in my office and I was already thinking about doing something like this but when I thought about what it would take to do something like this, I put it in put it on the back burner. Once Jojo mentioned that XXL issue, I knew that was confirmation and I started putting the different elements together to get it done. Not too long after that Shalae Madison, a photographer out of Detroit, hit me up and said that she had been wanting to work with me for quite some time and when I told her the idea, she loved it. Now in the beginning when I thought about this photo shoot, conceptually, I wanted to go with someone like Derek Blanks or someone who had years in the photography game, but I quickly decided that Shalae was the right fit because she too was a Leader of the New School in her own right. I then began sending e-mails and calling various labels to see if and when some of the artists were available. After a brief conversation with VaShawn Mitchell, we then decided that Stellar Awards weekend would be the best time to do it because everyone would be in one place. And the rest, as they say, is history! Welcome to Issue #26 of Root Magazine, the Leaders of the New School edition. This issue is sure to be our best one yet and I am so excited for you to read it. Big shout out to #TeamRoot, who were the most professional, thorough and creative group of individuals that I have ever worked with. By Hasan James Root: In a year and a half you released a #1 album, got nominated for two Grammys and planted a church. Could [QW JCXG GXGT KOCIKPGF CNN QH VJKU Ć‚XG years ago? How have you handled all of this? T.G.: No way! Lol. Five years ago, I was leading worship at a predominately white church in Charlotte, NC. So much has happened in a short period of time. My wife and I handle it by not taking things too serious. Awards are just awards and they don’t make or break us. I’ve found true contentment away from the hype, so I’“ w˜>Â?Â?Ăž œŽ ĂœÂˆĂŒÂ… ÂœĂ€ ĂœÂˆĂŒÂ…ÂœĂ•ĂŒ ÂˆĂŒÂ° Ăž ÂŤĂ€ÂˆÂœĂ€ÂˆĂŒĂž Â?ÂˆĂƒĂŒ ÂˆĂƒ Ă›iÀÞ VÂ?i>Ă€ ‡ >“ˆÂ?Ăž wĂ€ĂƒĂŒ] ĂŒÂ…i˜ Forward City Church and then my music career. Keeping things in their proper place keeps me on track.

Root: 9JGP + Ć‚TUV JGCTF p6JG *KNNq + was on a plane on my way to St. Jude 9GGMGPF QH *QRG CPF p/CFG # 9C[q began to play, and the tears started rolling down my face. Did you know going into recording that album that it YCU p6JG 1PGq! T.G.: I had a good feeling about the impact of this album. I really put my heart into it. The songs were written from a desperate place. We were literally w}Â…ĂŒÂˆÂ˜} vÂœĂ€ “Þ ĂƒÂœÂ˜â€™s life, after my wife’s water broke at 21 weeks of pregnancy. It was in this storm that the album was produced. What made the record so special is that I had no pressure in creating it. There were no industry expectations or personal ambitions driving it. It was just me, along with a bunch of friends and local supporters, in a small sanctuary, singing to God. Root: 9JGP [QW Ć‚TUV JKV VJG UEGPG there were all of these comparisons to /CNK /WUKE &KF [QW VJKPM VJCV VJQUG comparisons would hurt you, considering

you guys were in the same genre?

T.G.: The comparisons to Mali didn’t bother me. My goal was to simply offer God my best. I felt compelled to help guide the culture of worship in our churches. Mali and I both grew up in Georgia. We’ve known each other forever. He would come stay at my house when we were teenagers, so we are like brothers. We share our highs and lows almost exclusively with each other, so the comparison thing was a joke to us because we actually know how incredibly different we are. For one, he’s way more into music than I am. He’s been married to music since he was a kid. I only date music on the side. LOL. I can go days without hearing, playing, or singing any music at all. There are many more distinctions that separate us but we’ve worked with one another for several years, on multiple songs, so obviously there are some similarities, but the differences are far greater. Root: You have been the lead pastor of Forward City Church for almost a year now. How has that transition been? T.G.: It’s been the joy of my life. The transition started long before the church launch. We took several years to pray, build a team, and strategize for what we’re doing now. It’s not the easiest thing to travel through the night back into the country and show up at church in time to preach on some Sundays. But even with a hectic schedule, I try to relax and enjoy the journey. My remedy for fatigue is God’s grace, a lot of prayer, >˜` wĂ›i Â…ÂœĂ•Ă€ i˜iĂ€}Ăž `Ă€ÂˆÂ˜ÂŽĂƒt

Root: Politically, we have gone through some tumultuous times over the last couple of months with the election of &QPCNF 6TWOR *G JCU UJQYP JKOUGNH to be racist, a womanizer and so many other things, yet there were many artists NKMG [QWTUGNH CPF %JTKUGVVG /KEJGNG who chose to sing at his inauguration. Did your performance mean that you GPFQTUGF &QPCNF 6TWOR! &KF [QW actually get to meet him? T.G.: My performance had little to do with the president and everything to do with my assignment. After much prayer, it was clear to me what I was supposed

to do. What better way to show light in a dark country? What better way to engage culture? For me, it was clearly a God opportunity. By taking the Gospel iĂ›iĂ€ĂžĂœÂ…iĂ€i] Ă€iyiVĂŒ ĂŒÂ…i ˆLÂ?i Â“ÂœĂ€i than sitting back in my comfort zone. I did not meet the president, but I met a lot of political movers and shakers, who said they loved the same Jesus that I do. There’s nowhere on the planet that I would refuse to go, if God sent me.

It is an absolute honor to be on the cover of Root Magazine. I’m a hard core fan of gospel music! The height of my personal success ÂœĂ€ vĂ•Â?wÂ?Â?“iÂ˜ĂŒ ÂˆĂƒ Â˜ÂœĂŒ ˆ˜ >V…ˆiĂ›i“iÂ˜ĂŒ] LĂ•ĂŒ in radical obedience. I feel totally clear, at peace, and safe in God’s will. The highlight of my life is my beautiful wife and my two miracle sons. They give me motivation to keep moving. There are many more souls to reach and an entire generation to inspire. Root: What is the best thing about being a young pastor over a millennial church? T.G.: Having God as my boss is the best thing. Its like going to work for a proud Dad. The liberty to try different methods makes it fun. For example, we have a DJ that spins on stage every week and a hip hop dance team. There’s no pressure to be traditional at all. We dress casual every week and have relevant discussions to help navigate in and through culture. Although we are modern, God’s presence is evident. In less than six months, we’ve had 240 salvations, marriages have been restored, bodies have been healed, and countless other miracles. At Forward City Church, we simply want to expose people to the pure presence of God. We teach that in Him, our past is gone, our future awaits, and we can move forward!

DEON KIPPING IS THE ARCHITECT OF MANY SONGS THAT TALK ABOUT HEALING, PRAISING GOD IN ADVANCE AND GOD’S GRACE. LITTLE DID HE KNOW THE WORDS THAT HE WROTE FOR OTHERS TO GET THROUGH WOULD BE THE WORDS THAT HE NEEDS TO RING TRUE FOR HIMSELF. By Hasan James 4QQV *QY FKF [QW ƂPF QWV VJCV [QW were diagnosed with cancer? Deon Kipping: Last year, I lost my sister and shortly thereafter, we lost our dear friend Thomas “TC” Clay. I only went to the doctor because so many people around me were passing away. I didn’t have any symptoms or anything of the kind; I just wanted to get a checkup. During my checkup, my doctor saw some things in my liver levels. They ran some tests and on Black Friday 2016, they told me that I had cancer. I wasn’t going to the ` VÌ À Ài}Õ >À Þ > ` Ì Õ} Ì Ü>Ã w i° Ì was the urgency I felt with so many of my friends passing away that made me want to get checked out. Root: After writing so many incredible songs with meaningful lyrics, are any of those songs you wrote speaking to you during this time? Deon Kipping: Yes, they are! I was to talking Isaac Carree and he told me to go back and listen to the songs I wrote. He said, “Let those songs minister to you. You wrote them for everybody else but now they need to minister to you.” As I began to listen, I realized that I spoke a lot about healing in a lot of these songs. I do believe that you have to eventually live what you write about. I think that’s where I am right now. I did another interview not too long ago about my record, “Something To Talk About.” I explained that the title of the record came from the story in the Bible of the blind boy. Before Jesus healed him, those around him asked, “What did he do to be blind?” Jesus basically answered, “He Ü>Ã L ` Ã Ì >Ì V> Li } À wi`°» ` believe that. However, I would have never expected for me to have cancer. I believe that I am just like the blind boy in the bible. I am not going to say that I didn’t do anything wrong, but I felt as if I didn’t deserve it just the same. Above all, I do believe that is for God to get the glory and bring awareness. At the end of it all, there will be healing and things will happen after this. I pray that people will

Usually they do concerts of this magnitude after someone dies, but I am grateful to be able to live and feel the love from my industry friends. I am so grateful that I cannot put it into words. Gerald & Tammi Haddon, Isaac Caree, Tasha Cobbs and many others all rallied together to do Ì Ã v À i° ii« } >Ì Ì i yÞiÀ disbelief. Root: How are you maintaining mentally and spiritually? Deon Kipping: Þ wÀÃÌ Üii v chemotherapy and radiation was in the last week of January. I was doing really good for awhile, but I had a moment and had to get myself together. I know I am going to have some ups and downs throughout this process, but I totally believe that God is my healer. Mentally, ½Ûi «Ài«>Ài` ÞÃi v v À Ì i w} Ì° ƂVÌÕ> Þ] >Ûi Ì Ì> i Ì >Ì L>V ] ` Ã w} Ì } for me. I have to keep myself in good spirits and stay prayed up and I also still have a sense of normalcy, like continuing to do Praise & Worship at my church. I am not pushing myself too hard, but healing comes from those things. I am back in the studio because I want to keep my life as it was. The day I received my prognosis, I was getting ready for JJ Hairston’s concert called “The Outpouring.” The doctor wasn’t suppose to, but he actually told me over the phone that I had cancer. My mother kept calling him every day of the week for an update. When I found out, I took my grandfather’s Bible and immediately closed my door. My mother can be a little pessimistic at times, so I had to get away from her. While I was in my room, I randomly opened the Bible because I didn’t know what else to do and when I opened it, I landed on Mark 18. In that scripture, it says that “You will lay hands on the sick and the sick will recover.” My grandfather had given us anointed oil when we were kids, so I immediately began to lay hands on myself in prayer. Every week, I have been doing the same thing. I believe that was God letting me know that healing is here and I just have to receive it. When I have those mental breakdowns, I just go back to that scripture, Mark 18. Sometimes I’m tired and drained after chemotherapy

and radiation, but I asked God to give me enough strength to play with my son. I don’t what him to see or feel any difference; I want him to know that iÛiÀÞÌ } Ü Li ÕÃÌ w i° Root: Your album, “Something To Talk About” is a brilliant album in my opinion. Do you think that it went over people’s heads? Deon Kipping: I am hoping the Gospel music industry catches up. We have to grow and there has to be some type of evolution. We have the talent to do it, it’s just a matter of people accepting, buying and pushing it. Root: During this valley experience, have you written any new songs? Deon Kipping: I have not had the time to sit down to creatively write something. However, I have been singing full songs in my voice recorder that I think are going to be some great songs. I don’t know when they are going to come out or who’s going to be singing them, but I do believe that this entire situation is bringing me to another place as a songwriter. This evolution is all about me growing as an individual. A lot of the songs that I have written in the past was about things that affected me indirectly. The songs that I am writing now are a direct result of my situation. Root: What have you learned about yourself throughout this transition? Deon Kipping: I have learned that you cannot just talk about trusting God, you have to do it! As a minstrel and a preacher, I think we get up before people to get them hype and to push them to believe. However, when you get into situations like mine, it puts you in a place where you have to believe everything you preached to everyone else. I prayed for people that had cancer and believed God for their healing, and now I am at a place where I have to believe God for myself like I believed God for them. I know that some people go through trials like this to make them believe, but I have never gone through anything like this in my entire life. Every day I wake up being thankful for life and wondering if I have treated others right. I was walking through the mall very slowly after leaving chemotherapy and it made me think, “Have I ever rushed my grandmother when she was walking slowly through the mall?” This moment is really making me cherish life.

I’ve sat and listened and tried to emulate many of them for so many, years so when I found out that I was in the running, it kind of threw me off for a bit. Truthfully, I didn’t think that anyone wanted to hear this raspy voice. Years ago, my range used to be high and I lost it and the raspy texture is what I got back. I never thought that anyone would say that my voice was good. I sang on Sunday Best, got a major record deal and now a Stellar Award nomination! Root: How important is if for an individual to cherish the gift that God gives them? Latice Crawford: Any gift you are given is special because God doesn’t have to give it to you. However, I don’t believe just because you are told to do something it means you should do it. I can do a lot of things, such as hair, makeup and fashion, but singing happened to be the thing that chased me. When people say to someone who is tall, “You should play basketball,” that doesn’t mean that they should just go and play basketball. ;QW JCXG VQ ƂIWTG YJCV [QW YCPV VQ FQ CPF YJQ you want to be. Root: How important is for you to use your life’s challenges in the creation of your music? Latice Crawford: I think it is extremely important. People not only want to feel good, but they want to be able to navigate through their own situation. I make it my business to showcase my shortcomings along with my triumphs. I think it gives people a story and hope in all situations. It is my goal to change people with my music and not just something that makes them feel good and wake up the next day with the same problem. To me, the most important thing about ministry is change. Root: What are some things you have learned during your hiatus from music? Latice Crawford: I can’t really say that I took a break, because I was always moving and planning. The industry can be saturated with talent at one time. As the industry begins to birth new talent, you just have to take a step back and plan for your next move. I don’t think the public knows how much time has passed. It’s been eight years since my appearance on “Sunday Best!” I took

time to grow up, get married and have a child; my son is 6 years old now. I wanted to take my time to write lyrics from my life for a project that would resonate with people. I also wanted to showcase experiences that had nothing to do with church, but more so things that I experience through life as a human. That’s why I titled this project, “Dairy of a Church Girl” because I wanted to talk about things that I’ve experienced after entering into the church doors, but has me running back through. I wanted people to see that we go through some of the same stuff they may go through, whether you’re in church or out of church. Ultimately, the break gave me time to revamp everything around me. Root: How did you connect with your Business Manager, Kimberly Dickens? Latice Crawford: We have such a strange story, I don’t think people will believe it. We met through Facebook. She reached out to me some time after seeing me on “Sunday Best.” At the time, I wasn’t as well versed with Facebook like I am now. At that time, I happened to be on Facebook and saw a message from her and I honestly ignored it the ƂTUV VKOG + EQWNFP’t believe that someone would have a genuine concern for me through social media and it be legit. I thought she was crazy and my Brother-in-law said, “Latice, this might be real. You just don’t know.” I walked across the street to a pay phone and called her and she said that she wanted to bless me. Time had passed and I tried to reach back out to her for marketing and I couldn’t get her because I had the wrong number. Once again, it just so happened that she reached out to me again on Facebook and wanted me to sing to her on her birthday. I remember sitting there looking at the email going crazy that she reached out to me after not being able to reach her a day prior. I sang for her and we spoke. After talking, she was my marketing rep for one day. We talked on December 29th, and the next day Kim had an entire plan that matched exactly what was in my head. I’m thinking that I would ask her to be my manager, I felt like it was God that said, “Not Yet. If you ask her, she will freak out.” By the time she called me, she said she felt that she could do more. She wanted to pray on it and call me back. In that moment, it felt like my life was falling apart. I was going through my divorce, issues with my label and my team was breaking apart. It was like a domino effect, but Kim was that one domino that didn’t get hit. Root: Speaking of divorce, how has life been for you post divorce? Latice Crawford: It’s different, new and interesting, but I am navigating through it. We are raising our son together. This is giving me inspiration for new music, a testimony and giving me things to talk about when I go to churches. Everyone talks about the process to marriage, but no one ever talks about life after divorce. My situation is unique, as we have decided to be civil with each other and not be like other divorced couples. This moment is a part of my inspiration, my life now and I am goring with it.

Jonathan Nelson: I live in South Florida where there is a melting pot of culture. When I write, I envision people being encouraged and inspired. I didn’t quite visualize me traveling the Caribbean seas this often, but God knows I’m truly grateful!

Root: Surprisingly, “Fearless” was snubbed by the Grammys® and of all award shows, The Stellars. I know you don’t do music for accolades, but I’m sure it had to sting a little. What are your true feelings? Does it even matter?

Root: You are one of those artist that genuinely support your peers in the industry. How important is camaraderie in the Gospel music industry? Jonathan Nelson: I think that support is a crucial component to real relationships. I’m very relational. I value people that God has strategically placed in my life and if you value someone, you must show you’re friendly, not just verbally, but through your actions. Therefore, I SHOW up for my friends. If my schedule is free, I’m going to show up and push each and every one of my friends and family into their destiny. The Gospel Music community is small, so we need each other. Unity and camaraderie should be top priority for us all.

Jonathan Nelson: I think for any artist, we would love for our body of work to be well received and celebrated. I was a bit disappointed that “Fearless” wasn’t recognized on those platforms. Jonathan Nelson: Bro listen to me…one of my greatest joys is being a father. So, yes, I’m going to annoy my son and daughter as they grow and start the dating process. Apart of that is to let him know that I care. I’m concerned and I’m involved! I love to laugh and have a great time, so I documented my sons new journey into dating. What’s next? I’m currently preparing to record a reunion project with “Purpose.” This project will not only focus on the reunion, but it will also focus on things that are apart of my musical journey and musical family. No date is set yet, but I’m getting back in the groove of writing and creating. I think this next work will be a masterpiece. I’m also launching a bi-monthly ministry called “THE BLAZE,” which is a platform to inspire purpose and ignite a deeper level of worship. It’s growing each time we come together. Ajanee: Initially it was hard for us to celebrate because many of our industry peers were disappointed in the number of albums we sold. As time went on, we understood that although this was one of the lowest of sales for a number one album, it was not the lowest of the low. There were several low selling albums in the past that came in the number one spot, some from the same artist that complained that our sales were ÃÕvwV i Ì Ì i £Ã« Ì° 7i V> i to realize that although it may have been a disappointment to some, it was still a celebratory moment for us. We still had the #1 Gospel Album in the country and we still wanted to celebrate ourselves for our hard work, dedication and commitment. Root: Your debut was one of the best gospel albums that was released last year. What was the process like picking out songs, producers and songwriters? How did you decide on Ü >Ì Ã }Ã Ü Õ ` > i Ì i w > VÕ̶ Ajanee: It was a long process picking out songs and choosing which producers we wanted to work with Ì w ` Ì i v Õ `>Ì > Ã Õ ` v Livré. It took almost ten years for us to cultivate, build and create our sound. One of the main producers that helped us create our sound was a producer by the name of David “The Arcelious” Harris. Livré actually began as a band, we were not just singers. We chose to work with people like David Caton, Chenita Jones, Leamond Sloan Jr., Thaddeus

Tribbett, ASAP Ferg, Mali Music and Jason Nelson. We believe when you yoke hard work with a dream, miracles are bound to happen and that is what happened with this entire project. Root: How does it feel being nominated for multiple Stellar Awards after just one album? Ariel: It’s still surreal. We were just discussing the other day how we didn’t even celebrate our nominations because it took a while for it to sink in that we were actually nominated. It’s a great honor to be recognized. Root: Livré was out for almost a decade before releasing a full length album. How did you all manage to stay relevant for so long without releasing an album? Ariel: Honestly we just kept putting in work. We were constantly doing shows, concerts, TV spots and putting out songs. We probably Ài i>Ãi` v ÕÀ À wÛi à } ià Liv Ài we put out the album. With each single, we would do radio tours and even sponsor our own concerts. Staying relevant is all about putting in the work. Root: A few months ago you launched the Monday Night

My transition out of the group was challenging and uncomfortable, but being in the will of God brings great contentment. IS THIS THE END FOR LIVRÉ OR JUST THE BEGINNING By J.S. Williams Root: After almost ten years, Livré w > Þ Ài i>Ãi` Ì i À `iLÕÌ > LÕ Ì critical acclaim. How did it feel after so many years of grinding in the gospel music industry? Malik: It was a huge moment of relief. I actually remember just taking > Õ}i LÀi>Ì Ü } Ì Ü>Ã w > Þ out. After so long and so much speculation regarding our album, we collectively and individually heard it all. We heard the doubt and we also felt the support. Personally, I was extremely grateful. I can truly say that our heart, sweat and tears was put into this album. It was like holding great news inside until you burst years later. Root: It is no secret that down through the years, Livré has been through many changes both within the group and administratively. What is the state of Livré today? Malik: The state of Livré is simply growth! We are growing as individuals as well as collectively. We had it rough coming up in the game but it has made us all tougher and inspired us to try different things.

With that being said, Livré is forever! Whether you see one on stage by themselves or all of us together. So you can look out for great work from us in the future as individuals and as a group. I believe we’ve proven we are limitless. Root: The New Edition Story was a big hit for BET and the world got a chance to see everything they went through as a group. Did you see any similarities with your story as a group? Kenny: Absolutely! It was a relief knowing that one of the biggest groups ever in music, faced the same issues that we did. It was like “Wow so we’re not alone.” I’ve always heard stories about groups, but when Livré’s story was unfolding, it was a reality check. And yes, other opportunities were presented to me in the beginning stages, but I stayed committed to my group. I knew we were something special.
