Another Successful Event! Meg Lorente, Property Manager On Saturday, September 27th, your POA hosted a second Rain Barrel Workshop event in conjunction with Texas A&M Agrilife, SAWS, Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District, and the San Antonio Master Gardeners. The event was completely booked at 40 attendees, and more came just to listen and learn. If you missed this opportunity, mark your calendar for March 7, 2015 - the date of our next rain barrel event. Please continue to watch our website for further information. Starting in January, you can call the Texas A&M Agrilife office at 210-467-6575 and speak to Angel Torres to make your reservation. At the other end of our parking lot was our Donation & Dumping Event. After the success of the Spring event, you asked for us to host it again - and what a response we had! The City of San Antonio’s Dial-A-Trailer Program brought out the truck at 8:00AM, but by 10:00AM they had to call for a second truck! In all, three trucks collected 10.5 tons of garbage - patio furniture, old appliances, TVs, rugs, mattresses, non-working lawnmowers and other equipment...and the list goes on. Traffic for this drop off was consistent from 8:00AM to 1:00PM - even through the rain. The donation truck from Arms of Hope also received some valuable donations for their program, and were greatly appreciative to the Stone Oak Community. We would also like to thank volunteers from Republic Waste who assisted in directing traffic in this busy section of our lot! Your POA is working hard to enrich the Stone Oak Community. Great interest has been expressed in a hazardous waste disposal and/or shredding event. We are researching different avenues to see what is available for our residents. Please continue to watch our website at www.stoneoakpoa. com as it will have the most updated information. As soon as we have the next community event arranged, you will see it there first! Don’t Forget About Your Furry Family Member on Halloween! Spooky strangers coming to the door. The doorbell! And look at all the treats! Halloween can be a fun holiday for all members of the family if you remember these suggestions: 1.
The doorbell! Every pet’s clue that someone new to play with has arrived. With all the excitement in the air, and the doorbell ringing on-and-off for a few hours, pets can get very excited, or sometimes scared. Only you know your furry friend- will they be happier shut in the quiet bedroom? Or maybe, so they can at least see part of the action, you should sit outside to pass out the candy while they glance out the window. The last thing you want is for your excited pet to dash out the door!

Please do not leave your pet outside in the yard Halloween evening. Strange costumes and noises can make the dark even more scary. In addition, well-meaning children in strange, spooky costumes may try to pet an already spooked dog - resulting in a not so fun evening for anyone, dog included.

While we are on the subject of not leaving your pet outside Halloween evening, PLEASE especially do not leave your pet free to roam. Dogs and cats can get easily disoriented and frightened, plus all the added activity in the streets is not safe for them. (You also do not want your furry friend to end up with someone who may be more prone to playing “tricks” than giving treats.)

Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate! Not even a little is OK for your pet...in fact, it is TOXIC! Please don’t share, and put the treats in a cupboard or container out of their reach.
If you take your dog with you on your family’s candy quest, be sure an adult holds the leash tight, and remember some children, and adults, are afraid of dogs...and please, ALWAYS pick up any “treats” your furry friend may leave in the neighbor’s yard along they way. Happy Halloween!

Saving Up For The Holidays It’s that time of year again. In these tough economic times, many of us are trying to stretch our dollars and keep our debt as low as possible. The following tips from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) offer easy ways to save: t Empty the change in your pocket into a jar each night. Pocket change can add up to between $30 and $50 a month. And all that change you see on the ground, yet never pick-up- that adds up too! t Cut $5 a day out of your incidental spending. Mindless spending and impulse shopping take a bigger chunk out of your spending than you might care to admit. Try to avoid the impulse items at the check-out! t Resolve to carve $10 a month from each of five discretionary spending categories. For example: Food: plan meals in advance and never grocery shop on the run. Eating out: order water to drink when dining at a restaurant. Utilities: lower the thermostat at home. Shopping: stay out of malls, and shop only when an item is needed. Medical: sign up for one of the discount plans on prescriptions currently being offered by many national drug chains.
t Eliminate bank fees. Bank with an institution that has ATMs near where you live and work, eliminating any fees assessed by using a machine outside of your network. Don’t pay for your checking account when many banks offer free checking with few strings attached. Never overdraw your account. t Get an insurance check-up. You don’t want to be over-insured or underinsured, but if you can handle raising your deductible, it will save you money each month. t Don’t have too much of a good thing. Examine your cell phone package. Are the minutes right for your calling patterns? Look at your cable plan. Are you paying for channels you never watch? Switching to a plan that is right for you yields big savings. t Stop charging and pay with cash. Studies show that people who pay for their pruchases with cash typically save about 20 percent. Therefore, if you put $1,000 onto a charge card each month, you stand to save big bucks.
t Kick your bad habits. Buying a gourmet coffee, soda, pack of cigarettes, or a lottery ticket each day can add up quickly.

Think Outside The Pie Tin: 3 Surprising Ways To Savor Pumpkin This Fall (BPT) - Few flavors say “fall” more clearly and tastily than pumpkin. The squash that’s synonymous with autumn is also packed with vitamins, fiber and protein, making it a perfect ingredient for a variety of dishes - not just for everyone’s favorite holiday pie. Canned or fresh, pumpkin works in savory and sweet dishes alike.
Americans have been feasting on pumpkins since colonial days, when Native Americans first shared the secrets of this nourishing, easy-togrow, prolific squash. In fact, along with corn, pumpkin is one of the oldest cultivated crops in the Americas. While early Americans didn’t use pumpkins to celebrate Halloween, they did use virtually every part of the squash, from seeds and flowers to the vine and flesh. Here are three fresh ideas to help you think outside the pie tin this fall, so you can work pumpkin into your meals before the season is over. Better Breakfast Pie to pudding, pumpkin often gets relegated to dessert dishes. But it’s a great way to add seasonal flavor - and a punch of nutrition - to the first meal of the day. Of course, you can always bake up a batch of pumpkin muffins, but why not try giving some other popular breakfast foods the pumpkin treatment?
