WELCOME TO SEALY

Welcome to Austin County! We are thrilled that you chose to make our community your new home, and we look forward to getting to know you better in the coming months and years. As your County Judge, it is my job to represent the interests of all of our area residents. We are proud of our beautiful natural resources, our thriving local economy, and our strong sense of community; and we hope that you will quickly come to appreciate all that our county has to offer. Whether you are interested in exploring our many parks and recreational facilities, shopping and dining in our charming downtown areas, or getting involved in one of our many civic organizations, there is something for everyone here in Austin County. As you settle into your new neighborhood, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of our other county officials with any questions or concerns. We are here to help make your transition as smooth and seamless as possible, and we are always happy to hear from new residents. We are excited to have you as a part of our community, and we look forward to seeing all of the great things you will accomplish here.

On behalf of the City of Sealy and the Sealy City Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Sealy. Our rich history began with the development of the railroad and our San Felipe neighbors, thanks to Stephen F. Austin. The early business community leaders were very wise platting our wide streets bordered by huge oak trees as well as providing for the residents’ daily needs that continued to migrate from European Countries by way of Galveston’s port. The steadfast work culture has endured through the generations as well as the love of social activities from music, bingo and church. Another example of our heritage is the historic Liedertafel, a famous round dance hall, located in our own city where weddings and various gatherings continue. School and sport activities are ongoing year-round. Also, there are many good choices for local shopping as well as dining. Our location on Interstate 10 (52 miles west of downtown Houston) and State Highway 36 is convenient for commuters who prefer a less hectic lifestyle as well as business and commercial industries. As a new or returning resident, I urge you to get involved and become part of the fabric of Sealy’s activities and ongoing heritage. Once again, welcome; we are pleased you have chosen to live in Sealy.

The Greater Sealy Area Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome to you and your family. We are thrilled that you have chosen to make our community your new business home. As the Chairperson of the Board, I want to assure you that we are committed to making the Greater Sealy Area a wonderful place to live, work and play. We are proud of our vibrant community, which is filled with friendly people, excellent schools, outstanding healthcare facilities, and recreational opportunities. At the Chamber of Commerce, we work hard to promote the growth and development of local businesses, as well as to support the needs of our residents. We believe that a thriving business community is essential to creating a high quality of life for everyone, and we are committed to helping our local businesses succeed. As a new resident, we invite you to get involved in our community and take advantage of all that the Greater Sealy Area has to offer. Whether you are interested in joining one of our local service organizations, attending community events, or volunteering with one of our many non-profit organizations, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get connected and make a difference. Once again, welcome to the Greater Sealy Area! We are excited to have you as a part of our community, and we look forward to getting to know you better in the months and years ahead.

You get a firsthand look at new and growing businesses, learn about products and services you may not have known existed and gain insight into industries beyond your own. They’re also a natural way to recognize familiar faces, meet other members who are actively engaged, and grow your network of like-minded individuals who are invested in our business community.

Opportunities for All

Keeping a Small-town Grocery Tradition Alive

For more than 90 years, Bill’s Country Market has been part of everyday life in Sealy.

Generations of families have walked through the store’s doors for groceries, fresh meat, produce and familiar faces behind the counters. While the grocery industry has changed dramatically over the decades, the family-owned business has remained a steady part of the community since opening in 1932.

Today, Kevin Krampritz continues helping lead the store his grandparents started nearly a century ago. “There’s almost nobody left with the type of store that we have,” Krampritz said.

Bill’s Country Market first opened in 1932 when Krampritz’s grandparents started the business together in downtown Sealy. Over the decades, the store stayed in the family as new generations stepped in to help continue operations.

Today, Krampritz oversees much of the day-to-day business while his sister, Debbie, handles accounting and his brother, David, remains involved as well.

His parents, who were featured in a previous magazine story about the store, both passed away in recent years. Still, their presence can be felt throughout the business, including through a plaque near the front of the store honoring the family’s founders.

“I think they would be very pleased,” Krampritz said of what his grandparents would think of the store today.

“They would be pleased to see how clean the store is and the rapport that we have.”

In 1917, W. R. Krampitz started in the grocery business at the John Hackbarth Store. The store opened on Main Street in what eventually became a bookstore.

Staff included Krampitz and his wife. It wasn’t until 1939 that he expanded his business into what would later become known as the Kluchan Building,

Many of the customers shopping at Bill’s today have longtime ties to the store.

Krampritz said some families have continued shopping there for generations, with children and grandchildren returning years later to shop at the store.

Even as larger grocery chains expanded across Texas, Bill’s Country Market continued focusing on the things customers in Sealy had come to expect over the years.

Krampritz said the store takes pride in maintaining a clean, easy-to-shop environment while staying responsive to customer requests.

Bill's Country Market staff and family, providing a classic small-town shopping experience with excellent customer service and friendly smiles for more than 90 years .

“A nice, clean store. It’s easy to shop,” he said. “The aisles are spacious and uncluttered. We don’t make a lot of big changes.”

The store also stocks specialty items customers may not be able to find elsewhere, something Krampritz said regular shoppers appreciate.

“We try and keep items that people can’t get anywhere else in the store,” he said. “We’re very reactive to those requests.”

While grocery shopping habits have changed over the years, Krampritz believes customer service still makes a difference.

Bill’s continues to operate a deli that offers party trays, lunch meats, homemade salads, and fresh-baked bread, while the meat and produce departments remain among the store’s biggest draws.

“We try and keep that really fresh,” Krampritz said. “We’re very competitively priced in our meat and produce.”

Just as important, he said, are the employees who help create a welcoming atmosphere for customers each day.

“We have a lot of long-tenured employees that I absolutely could not do without,” he said. “Customer ser-

vice and being friendly to people, that is so important these days.”

Over the years, Bill’s Country Market has remained involved in local organizations and causes throughout Sealy and behond.

Krampritz said supporting the community has always been important to the family and continues to be part of the store’s mission today.

When Krampitz’s son, Harold, returned from military service in 1947, he joined his father in the business. Krampitz built the first store in 1950, before enlarging in 1962 as demand for goods grew. In 1972, the store moved into a new 12,000-square foot building on the corner of Front and 4th streets facing west, replacing the previous 6,500-square foot structure.

“We’ve always tried to be very involved in the community and help out with different, local organizations,” he said.

That support has included helping local nonprofits and food assistance efforts, including the Sealy Christian Pantry.

“We’re always glad to help out,” Krampritz said. “And, that's a really, really good cause.”

Krampritz said he still plans to continue running the store for years to come, even as the future of the business beyond his generation remains uncertain.

“I’d like to carry the tradition on for quite some time,” he said.

For Krampritz, the store has always been about more than groceries. It’s about the people who walk through the doors each day and the relationships built over generations in Sealy.

“I’m very people-oriented,” he said. “I love visiting with people and talking.”

FOCUS ON COMMUNITY

More Than a Pantry: How the Sealy Christian Pantry Supports Austin County

The Sealy Christian Pantry has become a lifeline for many families across Austin County, providing food, resources, and a sense of community for residents navigating difficult times.

That commitment recently earned the pantry one of the Houston Food Bank’s highest honors.

Out of more than 1,600 Houston Food Bank partner organizations serving eight counties, Sealy Christian Pantry was unanimously selected to receive this year’s partnership award, becoming the first rural pantry to earn the recognition.

Director of Pantry Operations, Sue Kristynik, said the award represents far more than the pantry itself.

“This isn’t something about us having a shiny building,” Kristynik said. “It’s all about the community coming together.” She credited volunteers and local organizations across Austin County for helping make the pantry’s work possible.

“We don’t ever want people walking through those doors feeling like they’re just a number,” Kristynik said. “They are special, and we want them to feel cared for.”

Board member Patty Tomacek said many families arrive at the pantry feeling embarrassed or uncertain about asking for help. She recalled one woman who sat crying in the waiting area after both she and her husband lost their jobs.

“She said, ‘I don’t know what we’re going to do,’” Tomacek said. “And I told her, ‘God sent you here, and we’re going to help you.’”

Weeks later, the woman returned to share that she had found a job.

“That’s what we’re about,” Tomacek said. “If you’re struggling, don’t be embarrassed to come here.”

More than a food pantry

The pantry’s work extends far beyond distributing groceries. Through partnerships with the Houston Food Bank, the pantry helps connect Austin County residents with SNAP benefits and other assistance programs, offering in-person guidance to families who may lack internet access or feel overwhelmed by the application process.

The organization has also expanded seasonal and community-focused efforts in recent years, including summer meal programs for children who lose access to free school meals during breaks and large holiday food distributions serving hundreds of local families.

The Pantry serves more than 400 families twice a month from their new home.

Entirely volunteer-run, around 50 active volunteers power the site weekly.

“We just need to be able to do more than just hand someone canned green beans,” Kristynik said.

Last year, the pantry hosted a holiday distribution event that provided boxes of food to more than 500 families, helping many put meals on the table during the holiday season.

“This was the first time that we did it, and hopefully it’s the first of many times that we’re able to do it,” Kristynik said.

The pantry has also worked to connect residents with additional resources through the Houston Food Bank, including programs for grandparents raising grandchildren, single mothers, and workforce assistance.

“We just need to be able to do more than just hand someone canned green beans,” Kristynik said. “That’s what we’re trying to do here.”

For Tomacek, one of the most important parts of the pantry’s mission

is making sure families feel welcomed and supported during difficult moments.

“We have people that greet them with big smiles, big hugs,” she said. “Everyone just has a heart and love for wanting to help those who are in need.”

The pantry’s work extends far beyond distributing groceries. Through partnerships with the Houston Food Bank, the pantry helps connect Austin County residents with SNAP benefits and other assistance programs, offering in-person guidance to families who may lack internet access or feel overwhelmed by the application process.

The heart of the pantry Kristynik said the pantry relies on nearly 50 regular volunteers who help serve families each week.

“Everyone just has a heart and love for wanting to help those who are in need,” she said.

For Sherry Santoro, volunteering has become a way to connect with the community while helping others.

“It’s the people,” Santoro said. “You realize what a wonderful community we have.”

Volunteer Jeff Shoop and his wife, Mel, say their faith is what motivates them to serve.

“I don’t think there’s any greater thing we can do than give back to those people who are in need,” he said.

Volunteer Renee Pursley said her own experiences growing up in a family that sometimes struggled to put food on the table made serving at the pantry especially meaningful.

“I know what they’re going through,” she said. “It’s my way of giving back.”

Sealy Christian Pantry is located at 412 Old San Felipe Road in Sealy.

On March 21, 2025, the Sealy Chamber held a ribbon cutting for the Sealy Christian Pantry to celebrate their new, permanent home on Old San Felipe Road in Sealy.

SEALY’S RICH HISTORY The Birth of Sealy

In the early 1820s, a new settlement known as San Felipe emerged on the western bank of the Brazos River, rising to prominence as the capital of Stephen F. Austin’s colony. Serving as both the seat of government and the location of Austin's land office, San Felipe de Austin marked the first and largest Anglo-American settlement in Mexican Texas, facilitating the introduction of 300 families into the region.

In the mid-1870s, the burgeoning town faced a pivotal decision when the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway proposed routing its new Galveston-Brenham spur through San Felipe. Despite declining the offer, the railroad acquired a right-of-way through the western section of the original 22,000-acre municipal tract.

The subsequent purchase of an 11,635-acre tract from the San Felipe de Austin Town Corporation led to the establishment of a new townsite south of Bullinger’s Creek. In 1879, the bustling town of Sealy was officially founded, named in honor of George Sealy, a prominent director of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway.

The railroad quickly became the primary employer and transformed the area, constructing yards, machine shops, and a roundhouse. Additionally, an influx of German and Czech settlers diversified the local economy, integrating farming and ranching alongside railway operations.

Despite facing adversities like a disastrous flood in 1899 and the relocation of the railway division headquarters in 1900, Sealy per-

severed. The establishment of the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad in 1892 and the Cane Belt Railroad in 1903 further solidified Sealy’s position as a vital transportation hub.

Manufacturing enterprises such as the Haynes Mattress Factory

and the Engelking Brothers Broom Factory bolstered the town’s commercial reputation. On Aug. 16, 1949, Sealy residents voted to incorporate the town as Austin County’s newest city.

A Familiar Name

Sealy Mattress traces its roots back to 1881 when Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder in Sealy, Texas, began crafting cotton-filled mattresses for his friends and local community members. His mattresses quickly gained popularity, leading to increased demand and wider recognition. In 1889, Haynes pat -

ented a machine that compressed cotton, revolutionizing mattress manufacturing.

As his reputation spread beyond Sealy, Haynes mattresses became known as “Sealy mattresses.” In 1906, Haynes sold his factory, patents, and manufacturing

equipment to a group from Texas who chose to retain the name and call their new company the Sealy Mattress Company. Haynes established a new mattress factory in 1909, which continued operations after his death in 1913, solidifying the matress manufacturer's status as one of Sealy’s primary industries until 1976.

In 1881, Daniel Haynes (1828-1913) arrived in Sealy, a burgeoning railroad town. Four years later in 1885, he revolutionized mattress manufacturing with his innovative process and machine, trademarking the Haynes name. By 1906, his patents and equipment were sold to a company adopting the name Sealy, leading Haynes to establish a new factory in 1909. This factory remained a cornerstone of Sealy’s economy until 1976, testament to Haynes’ pioneering legacy.

s ealy C emetery

On July 5, 1883, Sealy recorded its first burial at the Sealy Cemetery, that of infant Annie Fowlkes. Families initially acquired cemetery plots directly from the railroad until the land was donated to trustees C.H. Ruff, R.P. Josey, and John Hackbarth in 1887. The Sealy Cemetery Association, established sometime prior to 1898 and officially chartered in

1924, received vital support from the Ladies of the Cemetery Society. Formed in 1904, these ladies helped upgrade and maintain the cemetery. Notable members like Mrs. J.W. (Vera) Ripple and Mrs. Paul (Mahala) Hackbarth spearheaded community events like the Christmas Bazaar Fundraiser, evolving into a cherished annual social affair. Among the 2,400 grave sites lie the resting places of Sealy’s earliest settlers, adorned with diverse gravestones and statuary, including two mausoleums.

A singing society known as Liedertafel, formed by Sealy’s early settlers around 1899, convened primarily at Ferdinand Lux’s residence. Lux and Fritz Kinkler, Jr., generously donated land for a permanent building in 1912-1914, leading to the construction of a distinctive round frame dance hall. Erected with materials from the F.W. Hackbarth Lumber Company, this octagonal structure became a focal point for community concerts, festivals, and dances, serving as a beloved gathering spot for special events for decades.

The Sealy Historical Park, a testament to local heritage, encompasses various historic structures, including the Santa Fe Museum building, once home to the Sealy Weekly News. Originally constructed in 1900, it relocated in 1929 to make way for the Texas Theatre. Additionally, the park features the two-story brick mercantile store built by John and Louis Hackbarth in 1880, alongside Sealy's first jail, partially rebuilt after a fire in 1887. Notably, visitors can explore the 1927 Way Car, a vintage steel caboose from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, preserving an era of railway history. The park is managed and maintained by the Sealy Area Historical Society.

German natives F.W. (Fritz) and Carolyn (Krampitz) Hackbarth arrived in Galveston in 1846 with their two sons. They settled in Austin County, where Fritz

farmed and ranched, and the couple had four more children, including F.W. Hackbarth, Jr., born in 1849. The Hackbarth Building, a cornerstone of Sealy’s commercial history, stands as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of F.W. Hackbarth, Jr. and his family. Erected in 1907, this imposing structure housed various businesses, including a bank, jewelry store, general store, and even the Sealy News, reflecting the vibrant commerce and community life of its time. The building is now home to Botts Title Company.

p reibis CH b uilding

In 1885, German immigrants Adolph H. Preibisch and Emilie purchased lots in Sealy and commissioned the construction of a commercial building, completed in 1886-1887 by brick mason John Colleton. Initially housing Preibisch’s own store, it sold household goods and furniture, and also served as a funeral casket outlet. Over the years, the building accommodated various businesses and remains a significant part of Sealy’s architectural history. The building now houses Saddleback Saloon.

A 1972 Pasadena graduate and former quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back for the Pasadena Eagles, TJ Mills got his first head coaching job in 1982. After graduating college, he joined Major League Baseball, where he played for four National League teams from 19381942. In his first major league at bat, he hit a home run - the first position player in the franchise to do so. He played on teams with fellow baseball legends, including Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio.

Ernie’s oldest son, Ernie Koy Jr. was selected team captain of the 1960 Bellville HS football team and voted ‘Most Valuable Texas High School

Player’ that same year. Ernie Jr. played as a running back on the 1963 National Champion Texas Longhorn football team and later for the New York Giants from 1965-1970. In addition to playing running back, he also served as the Giants’ punter.

Following in the footsteps of his father and brother, Ted Koy played as a football player for the Texas Longhorns. He was a starter of the 1969 National Championship team and was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the 1970 NFL Draft. He played as tight end for the Raiders in the 1970 season and then signed with the Buffalo Bills, where he played until 1974.

Ernie’s legacy didn’t end with his sons, however. His daughter, Margaret Koy Kistler, was a pioneer of Texas sports journalism. In 1967, she became the first woman to cover sports for a Texas newspaperthe Abilene Reporter-News - where she had her own sports column.
