This Summer Meaningful Family Interaction Through Volunteer Opportunities

ummer is the perfect time to play, but it's also the perfect time to have meaningful family interaction, help your kids develop their own interests, and make your neighborhood and community a better place for everyone. A tall order for one summer? Not if your family spends time volunteering.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there, make a difference, and have your best summer ever!

Volunteering is really just being a helper, a good neighbor, and a part of your community. And the way to get started, is to just start talking as a family. Take the time to sit down and discuss what needs each of you see in your neighborhood. You may each see a different need that is being unmet, and what your kids see as they walk to school is going to be different than what you may see as you drive to the grocery store. Then discuss how these needs could be met, and either start working on your own to meet those needs or join an already established movement that could successfully make a difference in that area. Afterward, make sure you discuss together as a family how things went from each person’s perspective.

• Sign up to read to children at your local library. • Donate time to your local animal shelter - walk a dog, play with a kitten. Or collect pet food and toys. • Volunteer at your local hospital. • Help with summer bible camp or church daycare. • Help coach a youth sports team or sports camp. • Cook and take meals to your local firehouse. • Start a school supply drive for needy children in your area. • Send cards to soldiers who are overseas or children in an area hospital. • Mentor a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters. • Help clean up a neighbor's yard who is unable to. • Collect cans or bottles for recycle and donate the money to your favorite charity.

5 Tips for Working From Home During the Summer Work-At-Home Parent (WAHP) Series - Part 3

t’s hard for kids to understand the concept that “Mommy or Daddy has to work,” especially in the summertime when fun is supposed to rule. Of course you can attempt to get everything done early in the morning or late at night while they sleep, but that doesn’t always work out. I'm often asked how I work from home while caring for my own 5 children, as well as having extra kids over during the summer. Here are a few of my own ideas for making summer work for everyone!

TRADE CARE

TEACH THEM I'm talking about chores here. There's no reason you should be working a job AND doing everything at home when the kids get to live there, eat there, sleep there and benefit in other ways from your income (or maybe you are just working to make ends meet, in which case the kids need to understand that, too). Teaching them how to do basic tasks and using a chore chart is going to save you a lot of time. It's up to you if you want to give them an allowance. Also keep easy food choices stocked so the kids can fend for themselves for snacks and drinks. Juice pouches rock, as do granola bars, cut-up fruit, nuts, cheese slices and those crustless PB&Js.

FIND OTHER WORK-AT-HOME PARENTS Find other work-at-home parents (WAHPs) in your area using a safe tool like Meetup.com and you can do an Adult Working Playdate!

KEEP 'EM OCCUPIED Google “indoor activities for kids” when it's super hot outside. Here's one: let them do a carpet picnic for lunch in front of the TV, and they'll be happy for an hour! Perler beads are a great distraction, and same for fort-building. And if they are dying to get outside, just go mobile and take your laptop outside so you can supervise their fun while you get something done. It’s also a treat for the kids and worktime for you if you take them to an indoor restaurant with a playplace!

WEAR 'EM OUT

So … did you notice the part where I said to get out of the house and take them somewhere? This means a break for you. You can't work 16 hours a day, people! It's not healthy! Set your goal for the day, knock it out and head out, and don't check that blasted iPhone. My next door neighbor's kid often knocks at my door to play while his dad is making work telephone calls from his own home. I'm a proofer/writer, so I can be interrupted and don’t need total silence, whereas his dad needs periods of absolute quiet to conduct his business. Believe it or not, tossing his kid into the mix often helps me out because now my kids have someone new to play with! If I take his kid a few days a week, he often reciprocates by watching my kids for a few hours on the weekend. If you have family who enjoys taking your child for a few hours and have a kid who can detach easily, take advantage of this!

the pool, a park, a nature center, the zoo, ANYWHERE for a few hours. They'll be nice and tired when they get home and maybe you can even get them to take naps! I've never had luck with that, so I turn on a movie or some educational TV and let them watch while I get a nice hour of uninterrupted work time.

 Quick Bits We've Got You Covered Important Sunscreen Information for your Family! Sunscreen Sprays Should Be Avoided Near Open Flames or Sparks The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported incidents in which people wearing sunscreen spray near sources of flame (barbecue grill, camp fire, citronella candles, lighting a cigarette, etc...) suffered significant burns that required medical treatment. The same is true for other spray products such as hairspray and insect repellents. Even some non-spray sunscreens may contain flammable ingredients. The specific products reported to have in these cases were recalled, however many other sunscreen sprays contain flammable ingredients, most commonly alcohol. The incidents suggest that there is a possibility of catching fire even after spraying and the sunscreen is dry. The FDA recommends that while applying and wearing sunscreen products labeled as flammable, do not smoke, and avoid open flames from lighting cigarettes, grills, candles, spark, or other ignition sources. -Kiki Bochi, Managing Editor of Broward Family Life

Sunscreen products can lose their effectiveness when stored for a long time. The Food & Drug Administration says that not all sunscreens have the same ingredients and therefore might degrade over time or faster than another. WV Family Magazine put some common sunscreen brands to the test. Our experiment consisted of using Ultraviolet-sensitive beads and a collection of new and expired sunscreens. (No specific brands will be noted in this piece because we are not promoting brands, this was for experiment purposes to determine if sunscreen expires.) Our controlled testing compared new and old sunscreen of the same brand and same SPF amounts. Our experiments found that expired sunscreens do indeed lose their effectiveness, and some can even accelerated and/or intensified sun exposure. It is a good idea to look at the expiration date before using sunscreen and when purchasing sunscreen. The FDA requires that all sunscreens retain their original strength for at least 2-3 years, however, from manufacturing to boxing, and from shipping to stocking the shelves at the store - dates could be close to expiring. Most expiration dates can be found stamped on the crimp of the product packaging tube or printed on the bottom of the product carton. 
