Hottest New Off-the-Grid Romance Locations for Valentine’s Day

Noreen Kompanik | February 3, 2026

For Valentine’s Day, off-the-grid locations offer a rare kind of romance— quiet, intimate, and removed from everyday noise. Tucked away in remote cabins, desert hideaways, mountain retreats, or ocean settings, these places let couples slow down and truly focus on each other.

With no crowds and nothing but nature around you, love feels simpler, deeper, and more intentional in places that provide moments of special connection. Here are some destinations to consider.

Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Set high in the Guatemalan Highlands, Lake Atitlán is surrounded by three volcanoes, small villages, and shimmering blue water. It’s peaceful, spiritual and slow-moving. Time stretches here as sunrises are soft, nights are quiet, and life revolves around nature and the lake.

Perched above the crystalline waters of Lake Atitlán, Casa Palopó is an intimate, off-grid hideaway where romance unfolds far from the noise of everyday life. The private home, turned boutique hotel offers just 15 individually designed rooms, creating a deeply, personal uncrowded escape. Think relaxing luxurious bath rituals, nights beside outdoor fireplaces, and a traditional blessing ceremony for couples led by a local Mayan shaman.

The best anniversary trip ideas for 2026

Jennifer Tzeses | January 21, 2026

Whether you're celebrating your first year of marriage or decades of love, these unforgettable getaways are perfect for romance.

It's easy to get so swept up in the daily grind that we forget to stop and honor milestones and memorable moments along the way. Take your wedding anniversary, for example. Sure, you honeymooned way back when (and if not, it's never too late for a do-over), but isn't it high time for another couple's retreat? Between work, family and the logistics of it all, most of us can use a little time to reconnect with the one we love.

But, where to go? So many choices, so little time to vet them all. That's where I come in: I'm a longtime travel writer who's trotted the globe from the U.S. and South America to Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, French Polynesia and points in between. I also consulted Sarah Phelps, a luxury travel adviser with Fora Travel based in Santa Monica, Calif., for help whittling down your search. The six destinations below have wide appeal — and they deliver just enough romance to rekindle that spark. Without further ado, here are six picks for the best anniversary trips, whether you're celebrating your first year of wedded bliss or your 50th.

Antigua, Guatemala

Couples with a sense of adventure and a soft spot for old-world charm will be smitten by Antigua. Phelps says it's one of the most colorful spots in Central America, the historic city blends cobbled streets, colonial architecture and volcano views that create a cinematic backdrop. Bonus: It's extremely budgetfriendly for what it offers. "This is the ultimate luxury-for-less destination, with nonstop flights from multiple U.S. airports," Phelps adds.

Get the lay of the land by wandering the historic city center with its cobbled charm, colonial architecture and quaint cafes and shops. You can also explore the tiny Mayan villages, colorful local markets and coffee farms just outside the city. For an adventure, consider hiking the still-active Pacaya volcano about an hour from Antigua. Celebrate your summit by roasting a marshmallow in the vents at the top.

When it's time to rest, Villa Bokeh, a 12-room hacienda in the heart of a 6-acre garden, affords a cozy retreat amid a serene setting. Stroll through the hidden gardens, lagoons and charming plazas with views of Agua volcano.

Where to go in 2026: The 17 best places to travel

The Points Guy Travel Team | January 16, 2026

Make 2026 the year you stop hoarding points for "someday" and book that trip. In a time of uncertainty at home and abroad, travel is one of the most potent ways we can continue to connect with other people, cultures and communities across the globe. Whether you want to maximize your miles for a can't-miss event, explore a destination that wasn't on your radar or rediscover a place you thought you knew, you've come to the right place.

Each year, The Points Guy's team of expert travelers and our global network of contributors curate a list of the most compelling destinations to visit over the next 12 months. Our 2026 list is shaped by a convergence of major global (and cosmic!) events, milestone anniversaries and just cool happenings, making this an especially exciting year to travel.

At the beginning of the year, Italy will take center stage as the host of the Winter Olympic Games in Milan and the Dolomites, while a total solar eclipse will sweep across Europe in August. Closer to home, cities across North America will host the FIFA World Cup this summer while the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 100th anniversary of Route 66.

Our list also highlights places that are entering a new chapter, whether rebuilding after environmental disasters or redefining themselves for the future.

In the U.S., Asheville, North Carolina, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains are ready to welcome travelers again following Hurricane Helene, while Seattle's waterfront renaissance signals a broader trend toward revitalizing urban spaces. Abroad, cities like Prague are evolving into more refined, luxury-forward destinations as they respond to overtourism and invest in higher-end travel experiences.

We are also very excited about the new points hotels, flight routes and cruise ships that are unlocking destinations that were once harder to reach (both physically and by using miles).

Read on to discover all 17 destinations we're most excited about in 2026, along with tips for getting these trips off your vision board and onto your calendar using points and miles.

Guatemala

Best for a mix of natural attractions and cultural experiences

Guatemala is a breathtaking, relatively under-the-radar alternative to Central America's more touristed (and higher-priced) countries.

In Antigua, a city about 25 miles from the country's international airport, you'll find colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and plenty of trendy restaurants and rooftop bars from which to enjoy views of the surrounding volcanoes. If you want to get a new perspective, head about an hour away from the city for a guided hike up the vertiginous slopes of Acatenango.

A country deeply rooted in its Mayan heritage, Guatemala hosts rich cultural celebrations throughout the year. Tens of thousands of travelers flock to its annual Semana Santa celebrations, which have earned a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation.

Guatemalan and Mexican government officials recently confirmed that the Maya Train — a Mexican railway system promoting sustainable tourism in the region — will eventually expand into Guatemala, making it easier for travelers to visit Tikal, Flores and other northern Guatemalan destinations.

What's more, points-savvy travelers can check out popular Mr & Mrs Smith properties — like Casa Palopo on Lake Atitlan and Villa Bokeh in Antigua — that are bookable with World of Hyatt points.

TPG tip: Flying to Guatemala is getting more convenient. In 2025, JetBlue launched service from Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, while Avianca launched new daily service from Miami International Airport (MIA). Plus, carriers like United Airlines and Alaska Airlines operate nonstop service to GUA from cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City

Best Destinations with Local Traditions to Experience Easter Around the World

For travelers seeking unique destinations with deeply-rooted traditions to celebrate Easter this year, we recommend four locations where guests can experience these local Easter traditions and cultural festivities that span generations.

From Antigua’s Holy Week to intimate luaus, travelers can learn how to celebrate Easter in a whole new way with the trip ideas below.

A Colorful and Cultural Easter Holiday at Villa Bokéh in Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua’s Holy Week (Semana Santa) celebrations are renowned across the world for their stunning blend of spirituality and artistry. Throughout the week leading up to Easter Sunday, the city’s cobblestone streets become vibrant processional routes for elaborately adorned religious floats carried by cucuruchos” – penitents dressed in traditional robes. Communities work for days, sometimes weeks, creating intricate alfombras (colored sawdust carpets) that depict religious imagery, local symbols, and vibrant patterns. These ephemeral artworks are swept away by the processions themselves, a poignant reminder of impermanence and devotion. For visitors, Semana Santa in Antigua offers a multi-sensory experience: the scent of incense drifting across plazas, the sound of marching brass bands, and the sight of candlelight illuminating centuries-old churches against the backdrop of volcanoes. Just minutes from Antigua’s iconic Parque Central, Villa Bokéh offers an elevated yet heartfelt way to celebrate Easter that pairs seamlessly with the city’s cultural rhythms. Set on a lush six-acre garden estate, Villa Bokéh is known for its botanical beauty, tranquil courtyards, and design that reflects Guatemala’s vibrant spirit. Each year, Villa Bokéh’s Easter Sunday Brunch Celebration draws both locals and travelers seeking an elegant but joyful holiday gathering. The brunch highlights seasonal local flavors, creative presentations, and a festive atmosphere that complements the reflective tone of the week’s earlier rituals. It’s a chance to reconnect with loved ones over fresh Guatemalan cuisine in a garden setting that feels both ceremonial and celebratory. For more information about Villa Bokéh’s annual Easter celebrations and the property itself, visit www.villabokeh.com.
