As I write, the bell at Lord’s has just been rung to mark the start of the summer’s first Test Match, with England playing in front of a home crowd for the first time since 2019. We also look ahead, with the usual mix of excitement and dread, to Euro 2020 with matches to be played in front of fans. Meanwhile, it seems that the economic impact of Covid will not be as severe as once thought. And we can be cautiously optimistic about the planned full reopening in England from 21 June. So it is not just the glorious weather of the last few days that makes us feel like we are coming out of a very long winter and that we have a lot to look forward to. This new optimism is reflected in the gdb membership. Over March and April, we were very pleased to welcome 14 new members to your business community. Now we can really look forward to getting together again at the splendid venues offered by our members. On 20th of July Ashdown Park Hotel will be hosting a BBQ lunch with the prospect of games on their flowing lawns (spaces will be limited - booking is now open via Events Page on the gdb website). Other plans for the summer are developing as we get greater certainty on any remaining restrictions culminating on 24 September with our first in-person Members Meeting (and AGM) since before the first lockdown. We are very aware that it is not just a matter of what we are allowed to do and when. We must also be sensitive to the readiness of members, and we regularly gauge feelings through our online events and polls. Needless to say, all our events will fully comply with requirements and guidance on precautionary measures – more than that, we aim to be leaders in good practice. Responding to your feedback, we will also continue to run regular online events as part of the mix. We started off on the ‘Zoom’ journey because there was simply no alternative. Online events are certainly an efficient use of time (though efficiency and effectiveness should never be confused) and going forward we see them as an integral element of our events programme - but no substitute for bringing you together in great surroundings. Thanks to all contributors to this edition of Diamond Rough Cut. As ever, it so good to see how much is going on within our community as we look ahead with confidence!

Meet Bethany Watters Bethany joined the Control Energy Costs team back in October 2020, initially in a temporary position which soon became permanent. “I really like the ethos of the business and everyone has been incredibly supportive and friendly. I have picked things up quickly and, as this is a new sector for me, it has been interesting. I also think it is important to work somewhere that helps businesses face the challenge of going green.” One of Bethany’s hobbies is painting – she particularly enjoys painting landscapes and flowers and has sold some of her artwork. Bethany is also an animal lover and supports a couple of different charities including Foal Farm, and Battersea Dogs Home. She also supports Cancer Research. Her sister is in remission from a rare form of childhood cancer, so this is a cause she supports as cancer has affected her family. Professional Indemnity Claims Custodian Insurance explains what do they look like What happens when a Professional Indemnity claim comes in? I thought I’d share a recent claim that we have worked on. A dairy farmer had installed a well to provide water to cattle. Shortly after the well became operational, the cattle became ill and started to die. A subsequent report revealed that the water was not fit for livestock use, as the sulphate level was more than three times the safe amount. Investigation revealed that correspondence from our client the professional consultants that had installed the well – stating that the water would be safe for cattle. We worked with all parties to agree a settlement of more than £24,000, which prevented the case from going to court. Claims can come when you least expect them – and we all make mistakes! Olive Tree Cancer Support Group receives The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Olive Tree Cancer Support Group, based in Crawley and Horsham have been honoured with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

Olive Tree are also receiving a special designation for providing impactful support to the community in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, by managing a significant increase in their usual work and providing support in extra ways. NSPCC launches Childhood Day On 11th June, the NSPCC will ask families, friends and colleagues from across the UK to celebrate childhood by organising a play event to raise money and help keep children safe. The charity has launched a new film that encourages people to play their part for children by signing up, downloading a fundraising pack and organising a play event to fundraise for the NSPCC, whether you’re 5 or 85. The NSPCC has grown increasingly concerned about the impact of the pandemic on children’s wellbeing and on young people living in homes that aren’t safe. It’s 1,200 Childline volunteer counsellors, as well as supporters and partners, worked incredibly hard to ensure the service could stay open and young people had somewhere to turn. Cycle Electric Compelling Sussex! Distractions We have always recognised the golden triangle that connects our three hotels and have been looking for a way to make this accessible to our guests. What are your compelling distractions? What else can you focus on when things are tough? Stress and anxiety are often the result of feeling stuck or trapped in a situation… and that includes thinking about the situation. Whilst we do need to deal with what life and business throws at us, it is also important to have some escapes… other constructive and enjoyable things we can engage with (and think about). The most rewarding of these, I call ‘compelling distractions’… things that participating in them give you joy, excitement, enthusiasm, energy or perhaps inner peace, contentment, calm and relaxation. Compelling distractions could include activities… something you love doing… or people or pets who generate a positive state inside of you when you think about them... or places that give you an ‘all is well’ sense when you go there or think about going there. Stop… now… and distract yourself!

launches Menopause Policy R&D tax specialist Access2Funding has launched its first menopause policy. Access2Funding’s new policy aims to raise awareness and understanding, outline the support available and allow colleagues to openly and comfortably instigate conversations about the menopause. Dawn Coker, Chief Operating Officer at Access2Funding, went through early menopause following a hysterectomy at the age of 35, and is calling for improved employer awareness and support around this often-debilitating transition, following her personal experience in the workplace. Dawn Coker said: “After being thrown into early menopause in my 30s and experiencing daily struggles at work with management who had little understanding or thought for my symptoms, we have implemented the policy to help create an environment where women feel confident enough to raise issues about their symptoms and managers are educated on how to support people going through ‘the change’. “The menopause policy will further strengthen our inclusive culture, where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.”

Free expert support for local business As part of our Economic Development work for businesses across the Gatwick Diamond we have been working closely with the Business Hothouse programme in delivering free training to support the growth of established businesses and to encourage the start-up of new businesses. The Hothouse series is a cornerstone business programme in the County delivering business owner upskilling and support, and provides access to business grant funding and to free workshops, intensive programmes and mentoring sessions. Run through the University of Chichester Business School, the Hothouse series is an £11 million business support programme funded through the U.K. Government and the ERDF, which includes the £2.65 million Invest4 business grant fund. The Invest4 Grant Fund can award up to £5,000 to start-ups and up to £170,000 to growing businesses. Currently over 90% of applications to the fund result in a cash award. All areas of the Business Hothouse programme are free and can be accessed by any resident within the Coast-to-Capital area, including Horsham District, who is aged 18+. Scaramanga’s whisky club Some of the team at Scaramanga have set up a whisky tasting club. The lockdown noticeably brought down the price of whisky in supermarkets, which is what got this whole thing started - there must be something good that has come out of the last year, surely?

Anyone can join, but Simon and Peter are the founder members and chief samplers, with a tasting chart ranking across a range of criteria. Sounds awfully sophisticated doesn’t it – but it’s just two blokes deciding whether they like the taste of each one they try! The whisky club has rules: #1 - First rule of whisky club, don’t talk about whisky club #2 - You need to bring a bottle of whisky #3 - Ice is banned
