Welcome to the July/August edition of Diamond Magazine.
As we move through the summer months, there’s a real sense of momentum across the Gatwick Diamond. Whether it’s businesses investing for growth, developing future talent, embracing new technology or strengthening international connections, this edition is packed with stories that reflect the ambition, resilience and innovation that continue to define our region.
July marked an important milestone for Gatwick Diamond Business as we hosted our inaugural Gatwick Diamond: The Power of Place conference at Wilton Park Bringing together business leaders, educators, local authorities and stakeholders from across the region, the event showcased the strengths that make the Gatwick Diamond such an exceptional place to live, work and do business I’m especially grateful to our Headline Sponsor, Irwin Mitchell and to Richard Freeman of Always Possible, for being an exceptional compere. Thanks also to our speakers and trade stand holders for their invaluable support in making this event such a great success
This edition's Member Spotlight features Gary Tomlinson of SOS Systems Ltd, a valued member whose insights perfectly capture the spirit of the gdb community Gary speaks about the power of long-term relationships, the importance of helping others before seeking opportunities for yourself, and the benefits that come from being actively involved in our network His story is a reminder that successful business communities are built on trust, collaboration and genuine connections
I truly believe that investing in people is one of the most important investments any organisation can make, so I’m particularly pleased to see the launch of our gdb Future Leaders Programme, an exciting initiative designed to help develop the next generation of managers and business leaders within our membership community My thanks go to Victoria Ramsden for her drive in making this vision a reality With limited spaces available on our pilot programme, I encourage you to register your interest through the link on Page 8
The theme of growth extends beyond individual businesses This edition highlights encouraging developments around inward investment and international trade opportunities, as well as the continued progress surrounding Gatwick's Northern Runway project Together, these developments reinforce the region's growing reputation as a highly connected, globally facing business destination with enormous potential for the years ahead
Of course, Summer is also a fantastic time to make use of our events programme From networking lunches and educational seminars to our Summer Networking Raceday,
there are plenty of opportunities to strengthen relationships, share knowledge and build new connections across the Diamond I encourage you to get involved and take full advantage of the opportunities your membership provides
My sincere thanks go to AI Potential for sponsoring this edition of Diamond Magazine I encourage you to take a look at their feature on page 25 which highlights that frequent use of AI does not necessarily equate to effective use

I hope you enjoy this edition and find inspiration in the many stories it contains.

The EOT Advantage: The 10 Commandments to a Better Exit
50% (usually 100%) ownership to secure 12% CGT relief
3. Design a funding plan cash flow can carry
Deferred consideration is repaid from future cash flows, usually over 7–8 years, aligned to realistic affordability
4 Put succession and second tier management first Strong, incentivised leadership is critical; remuneration and repayment structures must work together
5. Build governance that earns trust
A robust trustee board, including an independent professional trustee, underpins credibility and compliance
6. Communicate, involve and share Treat the transition as a change programme; communication, representation and tax free bonuses bring ownership to life
7. Measure what matters and expect uplift
Evidence shows EOTs outperform on growth, productivity and investment when outcomes are actively tracked.

If there is one constant in digital marketing, it's change Search engines are getting smarter, social media platforms are evolving and artificial intelligence is finding its way into almost every marketing tool available. Here are three recent stories that highlight where the industry is heading and how businesses can prepare
Google's
AI Search Expansion Continues
Google is expanding its AI-powered search results, providing users with more
more answers directly within the search engine While this creates a faster experience for users, it can reduce website clicks for businesses To remain visible, organisations should focus on creating valuable, authoritative content that demonstrates expertise and answers customer questions clearly
Social Media Is Becoming the New Search Engine
More users are turning to platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn to discover products, services and recommendations This means social media content now plays a bigger role in online visibility Businesses should consider optimising profiles, captions and content with relevant keywords to improve discoverability across multiple platforms

Stop Playing Small: The Growth Question Every Business Should Ask
Many small businesses stay small not because they lack ambition, talent or effort, but because they spend too much time playing a smaller game than they need to
They focus on marginal gains: a slightly better email subject line, a marginally improved conversion rate, a small uplift in sales performance These improvements matter A 10% gain is worth having But it has a ceiling
The bigger opportunity often lies elsewhere
You may not be able to 10x your conversion rate But you might be able to 50x the number of people who hear about you. You may not be able to squeeze much more from an existing process, but you might be able to create a new offer, enter a new market, build a strategic partnership, launch an event, or create a campaign that changes

Workspace that works for you
The modern business landscape is dynamic and ever-changing, presenting both challenges and opportunities for growth In this environment, rented office and workshop spaces, have become a cornerstone for business success These spaces offer a blend of flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and community that traditional offices often lack
Flexibility is a key driver for businesses choosing rented spaces Companies can scale up or down with ease, adapting to market demands without the long-term commitment of property ownership This agility is crucial in a fast-paced economy where the ability to pivot quickly can be the difference between thriving and merely surviving
Cost-effectiveness is another significant advantage. Rented spaces eliminate the need for large capital investments in property, allowing other
shared workspaces cannot be overstated These environments foster networking, collaboration, and innovation They provide a platform for businesses to connect, share ideas, and create synergies that can lead to new opportunities and partnerships
BizSpace, with its commitment to providing flexible, customisable workspaces and its dedication to sustainability and social responsibility, exemplifies the benefits of rented office and workshop spaces Their approach not only supports the practical needs of businesses but also aligns with the broader goals of environmental stewardship and community building It’s clear that in today’s economy, the advantages of rented spaces are a significant factor in why businesses not only flourish but also choose to remain in such ecosystems.

Cyber Incident Response. Why Every Minute Matters.
breach, or compromised accounts, cyber incidents can escalate quickly A swift response can help contain the threat, minimise disruption, protect sensitive data, and reduce financial losses
Effective incident response involves more than restoring systems Organisations need to understand what happened, identify affected systems, preserve forensic evidence, and begin recovery in a controlled manner Delays can allow attackers additional time to access data, move through networks, or cause further damage
Why preparation matters
Many organisations invest heavily in preventative security measures but have no documented incident response plan During a live cyber incident, uncertainty about who to contact or what actions to take can waste valuable time.
Businesses should regularly review response procedures, test recovery plans, and ensure responsibilities are clearly defined Access to specialist forensic expertise and recovery support can also help organisations respond more effectively when an incident occurs.
Building cyber resilience
Cyber resilience is not just about preventing attacks; it's about responding effectively when they happen As cyber threats continue to evolve, incident response should be considered an essential part of every organisation's risk management strategy
The question is no longer whether a cyber incident could happen The question is whether your business is prepared to respond when it does

For me, being a great employee isn’t about job titles or profits It’s about being a good person recognising when someone needs support, offering a listening ear, making a cuppa, and taking time to connect, right through to celebrating colleagues’ milestones and birthdays It’s those small acts of kindness that matter most
I always try to create a workplace that feels positive, supportive, and genuinely happy.
This award means so much to me, but more than anything, I hope my journey inspires others to believe in themselves because with kindness, balance, and confidence, anything really is possible.

Supporting women transitioning through the menopause at work
Menopause support is becoming an increasingly important workplace issue, not only for health & wellbeing, but for retention, performance, equality and culture.
Menopause symptoms can have a significant impact at work Employers may see increased sickness absence, tiredness, changes in mood, anxiety, reduced concentration or a dip in their performance. However, many employees still feel nervous about asking for help They may worry about sharing personal information, being judged, and/ or facing negative consequences at work
This is why a clear, practical and compassionate approach matters. Menopause is not itself a protected characteristic, under the Equality Act 2010 poor treatment linked to menopausal symptoms could equate to sex, age and/ or disability discrimination. Therefore, employers need to consider making appropriate reasonable adjustments as a minimum

Why you shouldn’t use AI to write employment contracts
AI is appealing - it’s fast, low-cost (often free), and produces something that looks professional. But employment law is complex, nuanced and constantly changing What seems like a quick route to a “bespoke” contract can create serious risks if it’s being
wrong, leading to tribunals, financial penalties, reputational damage, or being tied to terms you never intended
AI tools can also present incorrect information very convincingly In employment law, this might mean pulling from the wrong jurisdiction (such as US law) or relying on outdated legislation Both can leave you exposed.
There’s also the issue of overgeneralisation Contracts vary widely between industries and even between businesses in the same sector AI cannot provide professional advice, so it often misses these important nuances
Beyond HR, data privacy is another concern Many entry-level AI tools do Information
not ringfence the data entered Information may be stored and used to train models, potentially appearing in responses elsewhere There have already been high-profile cases of sensitive business information being exposed in this way raising additional GDPR risks when handling employee data
A better alternative Employment contracts aren’t an area where you want to cut corners, but they don’t have to be expensive. With employment law evolving rapidly, now is a good time to review your contracts or put new ones in place We offer a free contract review, so feel free to get in touch to find out more

Birketts celebrates three years in the South East
A growing presence in Sevenoaks
Since opening our South East office in Sevenoaks in 2023, following our merger with regional firm Batchelor’s, Birketts has established a growing presence in the region. In a relatively short period, the office has become an important part of the firm’s wider offering, underlining both the strength of the local market and Birketts’ long-term commitment to the South East
Strengthening specialist expertise
Over the past three years, we have added to our expertise through the appointment of seven Partners who are recognised leaders in their respective fields In the past year alone, we have welcomed Helen Garner and Salim Somjee to our corporate team, Nicola Gooch to our planning & environmental team, Stephen Horscroft to our private client advisory team, Tristan Ward to our agricultural and landed estates team, and Ed Auger to our commercial real estate team Together, these appointments have further broadened the depth of specialist advice available from the Sevenoaks
Sevenoaks office and strengthened our ability to support clients on complex, multi-disciplinary matters
This year also saw the promotion of Charlotte Sloan to the firm’s Partnership, bringing the total of South East Partners to 10
Charlotte Sloan leads the South East employment team and is part of the firm’s education and transport/logistics sector teams Having joined Birketts as a Legal Director in June 2023, Charlotte is highly experienced in advising businesses and organisations on a wide variety of contentious and noncontentious aspects of employment law She has deep expertise in helping employers to strategically and commercially resolve disputes Her reputation as a leading lawyer in the South East region has led to regular participation as a speaker at events and panel discussions, as well as delivering training on topical employment law issues lawyer
Ed Auger
Broader support for clients in the region
The growth of the Sevenoaks office is about more than numbers. It reflects our firm’s continued investment in providing clients across the South East with access to highquality legal advice across a broad range of disciplines As the office has expanded, so too has our ability to support businesses, organisations and individuals across the Gatwick Diamond with joined-up advice that combines local relationships with the strength and resource of a UK Top 50 law firm.
Why the South East continues to matter
The South East remains a strategically important region for Birketts, with strong demand for legal advice from businesses, landowners, investors, public sector organisations and private individuals. Its diverse economy, entrepreneurial culture and business clout across the Gatwick Diamond make it a significant market for a fullservice law firm, and one where sector knowledge and regional understanding are especially valuable
Collectively, our Sevenoaks-based Partners bring clients both legal and sector-specific expertise that is rarely matched by other firms operating in the region. This growth in people means we are well placed to support clients through every stage of life or business with advice that is both personal and commercially focused
Growth in people and space
Overall, the Birketts South East team now includes just under 80 colleagues, representing just under 250% growth in size since its inception This progress has also been reflected in the expansion of our office at One Suffolk Way, which
Tristan Ward
which doubled in capacity in February 2025 to support the continued growth of the team and the needs of our clients in the region.
Looking to the future
As we enter our next phase of growth in the South East, the focus remains on building sustainably and responding to client need Continued investment in talent, space and sector expertise will be key to ensuring the office remains well placed to support both longstanding and new clients across the region in the years ahead
Reflecting on the firm’s three-year anniversary, Partner and Head of Office, Vanda James, said: “The past three years have been incredibly exciting When Birketts opened the Sevenoaks office the plan was always to deliver a fullservice offering, and we are well on our way to achieving that aim The growth we have experienced and the appointments made in the last year in particular are a clear marker of our strength and depth in the region, showcasing Birketts as not only a great employer, but also the law firm of choice for individuals, businesses, government and public sector organisations in the South East. I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the next three years ”

The Growing Role of Managed Transport Services
AI Is No Longer Optional: Are UK Businesses Ready
l
Intelligence has shifted dramatically over the past 12-18 months. What was once experimental or hype-driven is now embedded in how businesses operate, compete, and grow In London, one of Europe’s leading technology hubs, this change is visible in real time. Across the UK, AI is no longer a future concept it is becoming core infrastructure Businesses are moving beyond isolated pilots towards practical
Making change work
We all want change to work smoothly in our organisations, whether it’s introducing new technology, improving processes, a merger/acquisition or adopting new ways of working, but how often does it go entirely to plan?
Organisations and the people within them experience change every day. New systems, AI tools, reporting lines and evolving expectations all require people to adapt Given the pace and pressure of modern work, many leaders understandably focus more on delivering the change itself than helping people adapt to it, particularly in smaller organisations where time and resources may be stretched
Change management is often associated with major restructures or transformation programmes, but it actually adds value whenever organisations are asking people to work
work differently. When people are supported to adapt effectively, initiatives are far more likely to succeed
Without the right approach, even wellintended change can lead to confusion, resistance and legal risk, impacting morale, productivity, costs, reputation and project success
Leaders regularly feedback that these practical actions can make a real difference:
Identify a leader to own and reinforce the change
Define what success looks like from the outset
Involve and support managers early - they play a key role in building trust and helping teams adapt
Communicate consistently and openly
Treat resistance as useful feedback instead of something to overcome
Consider legal and employee relations implications early
If you're planning change within your organisation and would like to discuss how to give it the best chance of success, please do get in touch for a conversation

Why bother with a Fractional Sales Director?
Only 28% of sales professionals hit their annual sales target. That is not just a blip, it is the lowest figure Salesforce have recorded in six years of tracking And yet most businesses respond by pushing harder, adding more activity and wondering why the results do not change.
The uncomfortable truth is that underperforming sales functions are rarely a selling problem They are a leadership, clarity and capability problem
The right fractional sales director does not arrive with a playbook and a set of question
instructions. They arrive with the right questions. What is really happening now? What are the real challenges? And what is the implication of those challenges if nothing changes?
Because the presenting problem is almost never the real problem
Senior sales leadership that understands that distinction, that asks first, listens carefully and acts with the whole picture in mind, is rarer than it should be And for businesses not ready for a full-time hire, a fractional sales director might be exactly the right answer at exactly the right time
Whilst it is not for everybody, bringing into the team all that wisdom at a fraction of the cost until that business is ready, might just be the solution

Compliance Training: Did Everyone Really Get The Message?
“I’m not sure what the issue is with the Swedish translation of a course I previously delivered; I’m getting some feedback from my Swedish colleagues that the translation is very bad I did Google a few items that were updated but surely that can’t be the entire problem?!”
This was the actual email we received from a client recently. The presentation had gone well, but the translation had let them down How far should we go to ensure equality between colleagues who speak a minority language in a multinational company?
Swedish is an interesting example The Swedes are renowned for their excellent command of English, making itttt
it easy to assume that translated information is just an optional extra
However, the Swedish audience in this training course was totally distracted by the poor translation Maybe they were kind, but when you want their full attention on your presentation, sideeyes and jokes are going to make you feel awkward and distracted too “Did I get the vocabulary wrong?” “Was it phrased badly?” “Did I make a cultural blunder?”
We’re too easily persuaded that our own material is good However, the audience knows when the slides don’t match what the speaker is saying or if it’s been adapted from something else rather than prepared for them.
This content took 13 hours to sort out! The presenter was also on the wrong side of the legal compliance line. A good quality translation in the first place would have saved money and embarrassment, as well as making later updates so much easier and cheaper

The card should contain essential information such as key contacts, cyber insurance details, backup locations, recovery resources and a checklist covering the first actions to take. It should also highlight common mistakes to avoid, including attempting DIY recovery, communicating through compromised systems or making decisions before the scope of the incident is understood
The objective is not to replace a full disaster recovery plan, but to provide clarity during the first stages of an incident when decisions can significantly affect recovery time, business disruption and overall cost

How can you contribute to supporting the NEET crisis?
More than 1 million young people ages 16 – 25 are now classified as NEET –not in education, employment or training – the highest level for over a decade. At a time when employers across the region report skills shortages, this growing disconnect presents both an economic challenge and an opportunity
Young people are often portrayed as less resilient or even unwilling to work
Yet this stereotype, repeated across generations, distracts from the real barriers faced when entering the labour market Rather than questioning young people's ambition, attention should be focused on creating clearer routes into employment and skills development.
The consequences of rising NEET levels are likely to be felt for years to come
come Prolonged periods outside education or work can affect mental health and career prospects. For employers already struggling to recruit, today's NEET figures could become tomorrow's skills gap
As part of the government's youth employment drive, apprenticeships have moved back into focus. They help young people build skills, gain confidence and enter work, while enabling employers to develop future talent

Sensory Garden Development
As some of you know I am the Headteacher of Apple Orchard School which is just outside Horsham and provides education for boys aged between 11-18 We are a specialist provision that provides an education for boys who are in care and who have had a very traumatic beginning to their lives. My team is small, only 11 of us and two therapy dogs and our school is tiny – about the size of one of the Range Rovers in Harwoods We have some green space in the shape of half a football pitch and a carpark, but what we don’t have is a quiet outdoor space for the boys to have some time out if they need it. When I joined the school about two years ago, we introduced a Student Council and following a rigorous recruitment process 'employed' a Head Boy He has proven to be tenacious in everything he does and has worked hard to help the school move in the right direction. One of his projects has been the development of a sensory garden and he
he has begun the process of gaining support This is a wonderful idea and one that will benefit all our community but having realised that everything to do with gardening comes with a ‘Warning – This will bankrupt you’ he has reached out to some local businesses and has now received support from the Co-op with a donation from their community fund This was very well received and the manager, Paul, from Rudgewick Co-op visited the school to present the cheque We now have an idea on where too
to put our garden and are excited to begin its development
We would welcome support from any quarter and if you would like to be involved, please do let me know I’m looking forward to providing this space for the boys and welcoming members of gdb to its official opening that I am sure will be celebrated with plenty of unnecessary calories

Summer PR tip: Gear up for Christmas (yes, already)
It may be summer, the sun is (hopefully) shining and thoughts of festive campaigns feel a world away. But for anyone responsible for PR, now is exactly the moment to start thinking about Christmas It might feel premature, but the media cycle is already well ahead of the calendar
Monthly magazines and lifestyle publications begin planning their Christmas issues in summer Right now, editors are commissioning gift guides, festive round-ups and seasonal features If your story is not in their inbox by late summer, it will almost certainly miss the opportunity for December coverage.
Here are some practical priorities: Prepare gift guide submissions with strong imagery, pricing and clear purchase info
Develop Christmas case studies that highlight human stories or seasonal demand
Schedule time in your calendar to send pitches now, rather than leaving it too late
Early preparation improves creativity and reduces rushed, reactive pitching It gives you time to refine messaging, secure approvals
approvals from clients, and source high-quality imagery, all of which increase the chances of coverage in competitive festive features
We promise we'll stop talking about Christmas now But those who plan early will be the ones featured when the festive issues land. If you need support preparing your Christmas PR strategy, now is the time to start the conversation
Plan now, and December coverage will come by design rather than accident A little time invested in the warmer months can make the difference between being included or overlooked in seasonal editorial planning

Most construction business owners didn't set out to create a job for themselves Yet many find themselves trapped in long hours, constant firefighting, cash flow pressures and being the person every decision depends upon. Keep Me Breathing was founded by James Oakley and Stephanie Roberts after their son Casper was born with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), a rare disorder that stops the body breathing properly during sleep. Casper’s case was severe: he also developed neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer affecting around one in ten children with CCHS Months in hospital revealed a stark truth beyond mechanical ventilation, no meaningful treatments existed Refusing to accept lifelong machinery as the only option, they left their careers to create a patient led, engineering led, science led charity dedicated entirely to developing real treatments. All donations go directly to this work.
